Your Voice Shakes —Maggie Kuhn, social activist Our nation is experiencing intense times. Our nation is in pain, leaving us grieving trying to understand what is happening with our country. As an African American woman, who runs a small business, I have been nothing short but rattled with what is happening in our society. The personal pain that I have experienced in dealing with racism during my life has been raw and real and has bubbled to the surface during all of this. As we see all the hate and violence surrounding and consuming us, it's important to recognize one thing that gives me hope. What gives me hope comes to a simple word: Courage. It continues to show up in my life and I am witnessing it during our challenging times. It's interesting that courage means different things to different people. Courage may mean perseverance for one person and may mean letting go for someone else. Courage may be loud or courage may be completely internal. Courage may mean picking up a new hobby or exercise plan and may mean letting go of an old habit for another. Courage may mean showing your talents to the world or choosing to press on when life takes something away from you. Courage may mean being assertive, choosing self-care, or believing in oneself or may mean choosing to forgive someone. Recently I had the courage to share my story battling racism throughout my life. Little did I know, but sharing my story, impacted so many to show support, compassion, to listen, to take action. Take a moment to think about the things you've done recently that have been difficult and required courage. Now, think about the things in your life that you feel you need more courage to accomplish. As I witness what is going on in our country, I am seeing a tremendous amount of courage of voices being used and individuals standing up for what they believe in to create change. And seeing this, gives me hope that change will happen. Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes.
