Introduction The purpose of this guide is not in the popularization of drug use, but in telling a coherent and true story of cannabisâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s role in modern Spainâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life.

The World is made in such a way that even its poles and glaciers are shifting. The events and priorities in human life do even more so. Not so long ago, a center of the European Rasta movement was in the Netherlands, but just in one decade it moved south, to Spain. Now cannabis-themed fairs and seed shops, hemp museums and medicinal smokers clubs are a common sight here. Coming to the resorts of Spain, you have an opportunity to not just swim in sea and eat delicious tapas but also to sample out for yourself the latest achievements of the local cannabis horticulturalists. This guide contains all the notorious cannabis landmarks, the schedules of weed-themed exhibitions and the information about most known cannabis businesses. The law Cannabis consumption is allowed for the adults at home or in special clubs, but smoking in public is punishable with a fine of up to 350 euros. Keep this in mind during your trip to Spain.

There are no state laws regulating relationships between the citizens and their cannabis habits yet. Each province has its own mechanisms of regulating it, very similar to the States system, but it is possible to find common traits between their common law legislations. In Spain, everything that does not go beyond personal consumption is permitted: a nickelback in your pocket or a couple of plants on a balcony of your apartment wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cause problems as long as you are over 18 and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sell. You can legally buy seeds and all accessories to cultivate cannabis in specialized stores which are called growshops. Sale, smuggling and cultivation of more than a dozen plants will entail arrest and criminal charges. Transportation through the Spanish border and storage of up to 50 grams of cannabis are possible if you have the patient card and a filled Schengen agreement on transportation of medical marijuana. History Many books are written about how cannabis appeared in human life, so this very chort chapter is limited to a brief look at the Spanish approach towards smoking weed.

The first who brought marijuana and hashish to Spain were Arabic conquerors that have been attacking Spain since the dawn of times. In 8–9th centuries AD, the times when Muslims came to the Iberian Peninsula, the smoking of hashish or chopped dried cannabis flowers (kief) through a pipe was already a common activity in Al-Andalus, which is a name the Iberian Peninsula territory was known under during the Muslim reign in the Middle Ages (7–15th centuries). Now it is called Andalusia. The archaeological research and diggings near the ancient cities of Andalusia – Medina Azahara and the Alcazaba de Badajoz – revealed special pipes for hashish smoking, dating them back to 10–12th centuries AD. During excavations in Saragossa and Cordova smoking pipes of the same era were also found, but in those times tobacco hasn’t been widely known yet to Europe, though the Crusaders used cannabis for curing madness, hysteria, rabies, tetanus and cholera treatment. In the Middle Ages, marijuana and its

derivatives disappeared from the European medicine. The Inquisition, loyal to alcohol and somewhat to tobacco, banned all relations with cannabis since 12th century (13th in France). Those drying or smoking cannabis or daring to treat with herbs were immediately

warlocks. Cannabis was forgotten in Spain until the 19th century. The true renaissance happened only in recent years, and there is no lack of proof to it – any souvenir stall in the center of Barcelona

Industry As of 2013, Spain is the most liberal country in the European Union regarding cannabis: consumption and commersialisation of procannabis goods on large scale are permitted.

The main achievement on drugs of the Spanish

government,

which

has

effectively and peacefully resolved the «marijuana problem» of Spain, is the legislation which had legalized personal growing. This made it possible to withdraw huge amounts of money from the black market and direct it in ways which can benefit the public. Assuming that the average smoker spends from 100 to 200 Euros per year on weed, then a group of 3 to 5 million smokers will generate at least 300 million Euros income per year. All those money had been settling down in pockets of the Mafia clans until the moment when the smokers were able to grow their «fixes» by themselves.

Despite those imported from the Netherlands, there are authentic Spanish goods in the industry. Local craftsmen produce fertilizers, coconut substratum, growth enhancement tablets, and humidors to keep the crop in right conditions.

During the last ten years several important events have occurred. Their key points were: •

with fertilizers for its cultivation; magazines and special publications about cannabis became widely available; anyone can grow a couple of plants in their apartment or at their balcony; The weed leaf symbol got itself a positive Rasta image and is selling out as souvenirs filling the shelves of weed-themed shops and souvenir stalls. As soon as the society felt free, cannabis stopped being the forbidden fruit and became a common thing in boring everyday life. For example, you can now see cannabis beer Cannabia being sold on the same shelves as the usual Heineken in country’s largest trading network El Corte Inglés supermarkets.

As for the specialized shops “only about and

population of 50–100 thousand people has at least one growshop to it. It will be too much to say that these boutiques are crammed with customers, but their owners don’t complain nevertheless. The average receipt amount is about 30 Euros; Usually, the bestselling products are seeds, soils and fertilizers. There are about five hundred Rasta-themed stores and paraphernalia boutiques in Spain today. A

Wholesalers work with the hydro equipment as well as with the seeds, and the purchase amount is often very impressive. Large growshops in Barcelona and Madrid sell whole pallets of goods in a short period of time. That requires

replenishment

and

inexpensive delivery. The competition in the market is quite strong.

Clearly a double standard: fertilizers and seeds are permitted for sale in Spanish growshops, but it is forbidden to display plants in public.

Consumption The wave of legalization flowing over the country helped many people to forget their criminal contacts and to come together not being afraid of charges and penalties anymore.

The atmosphere Ă -la Jamaica and the smell of marijuana settled in todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Spain just like they did in the Netherlands of the 70s, when Rasta shops and cannabis seed banks appeared there. In general, marijuana consumption in Spain is quite common. Each fourth young person under 25 smokes pot at least once a week. Hot climate and the Spanish talent for living in a relaxing way could be the reason of the cannabis popularity. You can sense the sweet smell in the busy streets of Barcelona and near disco clubs as well as in filling stations, and especially on the beaches or in shady parks. and Eastern Europe for a fix of freedom have two ways to score: asking Rasta-looking young people hanging out in the downtown areas or to look for an address of the medical marijuana club nearby. In the first case, the price will be higher and the portion is going to be smaller, while the second one promises a more personal approach, though demands at least basic level of Spanish. There are no common points concerning smokers clubs in Spain. Since 2011 cannabis users are allowed to form private clubs for consuming and/or growing cannabis cooperatively for personal use. The rules of the «medical

consumers clubs» are simple: limited membership, prices no higher than 5 Euros per gram, and purchase amount limits of three grams a day per person. Members can also trade what they have grown or treat each other with no charges. The decision on the legalization of cannabis clubs was made in 2011 in the most independent region of the country – the Basque county – and within a year an amendment to the Criminal Code was enacted all over the country. As of 2013, there are more than 400 clubs registered in the country. It’s fascinating that passers-by can come in the cafe that brings together members of the community. Indeed, the «smoker clubs» are the local alternative to the Dutch coffeeshops. Although Spanish cannabis laws are not obsolete yet, an example of which can be an amusing incident that took place in Rasquera, a village located in Tarragona, Catalonia, where the Barcelonan Association of Cannabis Consumption (ABCDA) requested to rent a field to create a cannabis plantation. The association includes about five thousand members that have a prescription for medical marijuana. It is difficult to find a large parcel of land in the outskirts of Barcelona, so the organizers of this project applied a form to receive a subsidy on such a piece of farm land if such is available. To farm a field of 17 hectares, the leaseholder claimed to create 40 workplaces and annually allocate about 650 million euros

to the municipal budget. This decision caused a great deal of debates in the community: there were both supporters and opponents of the initiative. The incident received a very broad response across the country, and the agreement was eventually cancelled without any clear explanation. As a result, the number of club members was legislatively limited to 100 members during the first ten months. If there were no problems with the law and neighbors for this time, the limit would be raised up to 500 members and so on. The factor of «my own plants on my own balcony» says more than anything else about the atmosphere that prevails in the country. Tiny plantations in gardens, on rooftops and windowsills are increasingly appearing in different cities of the country. Expos Modern Spain today is a widely recognized cannabis leader when it comes to European exhibitions and fairs dedicated to cannabis industry. Annually four major marijuana shows are held in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Irun and Malaga.

The Beginning The first person who embodied the idea of cannabis exhibition was Carlos Erbes. The founder of the Hemp Fair, he began with a small growshop called Leaf Life which opened in Madrid in 2001. Along with his partner Carlos Palomino, he traveled around America and Europe, regularly visiting Amsterdam where one of the most important fairs in cannabis industry is held. It was the Dutch fair that guided the businessmen at the idea of organizing a similar event in Spain. Two years were spent coordinating administrative formalities and finding a

suitable place for the event. Palomino’s friend Inma Bonvehi was responsible for the media sector in Barcelona. Perhaps, today’s largest fair in Europe was organized thanks to her efforts and perseverance. Having authorities’ support and the municipal permission, the organizers held the first Spannabis fair in 2004 in the Palau Sant Jordi located on the mountain Montjuïc, a symbolic place of Barcelona. The event has become epochal soon: about five thousand guests visited the pavilion in three days. The following year the number had virtually doubled, and the visitors felt a bit crowded in small halls. Since 2008 the exhibition moved to a larger place in the city exhibition complex Fira de Cornella. The pavilion located in Cornella district in the west of Barcelona became the main center of marijuana show business. Six exhibitions running were held here, and the Cornella pavilion turned into a symbol of Rasta Barcelona. Every respectable company of the cannabis industry considers to be represented at Spannabis its duty. Dutch, Austrian, American and Chinese brands take stands at the exhibition. The first Russian hall appeared in 2012 and represented the leader of the Russian wholesale market, Grow Trade.

Spannabis February Fira de Cornella, Barcelona www.spannabis.com The exhibition complex is located in Cornella, a suburb of Barcelona. The main entrance to the exhibition, lost in the industrial buildings, has the shape of a pyramid. It canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t serve as a landmark, so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s quite difficult to find it for the first time. Distant location in an industrial area is compensated by an excellent organization and a strong positive aura. Detailed route description: the red line L8, direction Moli Nou, Ciutada Cooperativa, Almeda station, upon you leave, 100 m straight ahead and left turn at the first crossing.The city metropolitan system is connected to L8 train at the Espanya metro station. 24-hour railway tickets also allow using the train and can save you time and money. The path to the exhibition from the city center takes about half an hour: it is necessary to take the L8 train at the Espanya metro station.

Expo Grow September Ficoba Feria, Irun www.expogrow.net Another recently organized exhibition, that takes place on a whole different part of the country. The tiny town Irun, where the event is set, is located near the French border. The organizer of the exhibition, Cannasur company, is the largest Spanish grow wholesaler, have put up lots of effort and imagination into this happening. As well as lines of stands, ExpoGrow includes a lot of entertaining turns. In 2012, the program was the following: strongmen show, open-air disco, graffiti contest, circus performance, coal-roasted bull trunk, and skateboard competitions. Afterwards, it is worth to visit old San Sebastian, the capital of the Basques, located next to the ExpoGrow pavilion.

Growmed April Feria Valencia, Valencia www.growmed.es A comparatively new Spanish weed show, first held in 2012 in the megacity of Valencia. The event was organized by the Dutch publishing house Soft Secrets and a seed bank called Royal Queen Seeds. The newly built modern exhibition center of Valencia with shiny glass and escalators imparts reliability and solidity to the exhibition. Wheelchairs can get to the exhibition more easily thanks to the easy access and wide lifts, and there are more medical patients at Growmed than at any other events of such kind. Very convenient location and good sponsorship immediately made the exhibition very popular. Positive coverage on local TV helped attracting more visitors. Hotels in Valencia are cheaper, and the climate is warmer than in Barcelona – you can sunbathe on the beach even in April.

Expo Cannabis October Fiera Leganes, Madrid www.expocannabis.com The exhibition in Madrid, the capital of the country, is held since 2008. The venue is an arena in Leganes, the suburbs of Madrid. A three-day long exhibition takes place in an open arena where in the past bull fights were held. About fifty participant firms register themselves at the Expo Cannabis that is rather a small number. Capital growshops and Spanish seed banks – Dinafem, Pyramid Seeds, and Advanced Seeds – are wide presented. Unlike the Barcelonan one, this exhibition is a minor one yet still quite a positive experience. However, the lack of cannabis products and restaurants in the arena is a bit disappointing.

Expocannabis Sur May Palacio de Ferias y Congresos de Malaga, Malaga www.expocannabisur.com It is the southernmost country fair which takes place in Malaga. This event brings together all local growshops and manufacturers, and the average number of stands here is about seventy. The event is held in an ultramodern bright and comfortably equipped convention center which design and architecture are amazingly unusual and surrealistic. The event is very popular among foreign tourists because it can be combined with a fun day at the local beach by seaside. At the end of May, when Expocannabis Sur is held, the sea temperature in the Malaga area is quite good for swimming. The event completes a set of exhibitions in the country, transferring the business in the summer way of functioning.

The press Spanish Rastas and growers seem to be very active readers and subscribers. Several publishers print weed and stoner themed magazines, comics and books. Cannabis magazines can be found almost at every newspaper stand in the country, and spring issues even have free seed samples in them, unique in Europe!

Canamo A magazine of a very high (no pun intended) quality that is being published monthly since 1997, and has since grew its run five times compared to the first issue. The magazine contains traditional sections: news, readers’ letters, tips on cultivation and growing, et cetera. Trip-reports on traveling and finding smokable marijuana in different countries are published here. Readers are especially interested in “Grower of the month” section where one can see “Godzilla” plants (thanks to favorable climate).

It goes without saying that the magazine tells about current festivals, exhibitions and reggae concerts. Interviews with activists, book reviews, colorful pictures of plants, advertising of local and European companies of the cannabis industry are published. The magazine editorial office is placed in Barcelona. Canamo editor-inchief, Roje Vadraz, manages the editorial staff of five employees. The marketing department work is very much worth mentioning. In addition to Spain and other European countries, the magazine is delivered across the Atlantic to the USA, being read there by the Spanish-speaking public there. A price on the counter is about 4.95 euros, the magazine has 200 pages and its circulation is 25000 copies. www.cannamo.es
