2014 REBEL SOFTBALL GAME NOTES WELCOME BACK The Ole Miss softball team returns a number of familiar faces for the 2013 season. In addition to the entire 2013 starting infield coming back, the Rebels return 13 of 16 letterwinners from a year ago, including eight of nine position starters and four of five starting pitchers. Joining the Rebels in 2014 are three freshmen, a junior college transfer, and two redshirt freshmen. REBELS ‘WANT MORE’ IN 2014 After closing the book on the 2013 season with a doubleheader sweep, one thing was on the mind of Allison Brown and the rest of the team in the postgame huddle: We want more. “We had a lot of people tell us how great we were doing, and how much better we’ve been than we ever have been before, but our players got frustrated with that,” head coach Windy Thees said. “You don’t want to be congratulated when you don’t make the goals you’ve set out for yourself – even if they were higher than what the program has ever seen before.” Keeping that simple slogan of ‘we want more’ in mind, the Rebels are working harder than ever in hopes of getting more in 2014. “We’ve tried to incorporate that into everything we do this season,” Thees said. MORE THAN SOFTBALL During the heart of its preseason camp, the Ole Miss softball team took a day out to travel to the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. There, the team played games such as HedBanz, Uno and Connect Four with the kids, and also went room to room visiting with others. “It was great to go somewhere where these kids are fighting battles a lot bigger than what we fight on the field,” head coach Windy Thees said. The Rebels also visited the National Civil Rights Museum and did volunteer work on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The team helped with everything from keeping the flow of traffic running smoothly, to working ticket booths and making sure everything was kept straight at exhibits. “Martin Luther King Day is such a special day all around the country, but especially in Memphis, because it’s right there at the Lorraine Motel,” Thees said. “I wanted our kids to see there are struggles people fight that are, again, bigger than what’s on the softball field. It was really great for our kids to go there.”

Landwehrmier is from St. Charles, Mo., and has been named all-conference every year of her high school career. One of the top middle infielders in the country, Majam comes to Ole Miss from Pine Valley, Calif. Windy Thees, who started the Memphis softball program and built the Tigers into an NCAA Tournament team, is in her third season as the head coach at Ole Miss. With Thees guiding the program, the Rebels have increased their win total in each of her two years at the helm, and set numerous program records in 2013, including hits, walks, stolen bases and fielding percentage. The Rebels tied the program record winning streak in 2013, and the Ole Miss Softball Complex also housed its largest crowd ever. The Rebels have seen many individual success stories as well. RT Cantillo became the fifth Rebel ever to be named to the All-Southeastern Conference Second Team (2012), while Allison Brown became the Rebels’ seventh SEC AllFreshman Team selection (2012), and fourth All-Region selection (2013). In 2013, Ole Miss increased its total runs by 20, hits by 33, doubles by five, triples by two, home runs by 11, RBI by 16, batting average by .010 and committed 32 fewer errors for a program-best fielding percentage of .979. This comes on the heels of great improvements in Thees’ first year. The Rebels scored 73 more runs in Thees’ first year than the previous season, committed 14 fewer errors and raised the team batting average by .030. In the circle, Ole Miss pitchers lowered their team ERA from 4.64 to 4.55. “Windy and her staff have brought a great passion and work ethic to our program,” Executive Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator Lynnette Johnson said. “Windy’s experience in coaching and recruiting has Rebel softball moving in the right direction. The program will see the results on the scoreboard of the staff and team’s hard work.” Thees arrived in Oxford after starting the Memphis Tigers’ program from scratch in 2005 and led her squad to the school’s best season in 2011 with a 36-14 record and the program’s first berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers finished fourth in Conference USA in 2011 with a 15-7 mark in league play, which was the best conference record in school history. In non-conference play, Memphis knocked off eventual NCAA Tournament teams Kentucky and Stanford and reeled off a school-record 10-game winning streak. Under Thees’ tutelage, Heather Mott earned firstteam All-C-USA and second-team NFCA All-Region honors in 2011, while Ashleigh King was named to the CUSA All-Freshman team. In her six seasons at Memphis, Thees’ players earned nine all-conference awards, eight all-conference freshman team selections and three NFCA All-South Region selections. In 2010, Lelani Barnardino and Vanessa Walle earned second team All-C-USA honors and Carly Hummel was named to the All-Conference-USA Freshman Team. In the short six-year history of the Memphis softball program, Thees compiled a 172-151 (.533) overall record and guided the team to the Conference USA Championship Tournament each of the last five years. Thees tutored the Tiger pitching staff to several single-season pitching records in 2011, including wins (36), ERA (1.81), fewest hits allowed (231), fewest runs allowed (116) and fewest earned runs allowed (86), while Hummel tossed three no-hitters. At the plate, Jessica Phillips set the single-season home run record with 15 long balls. Thees’ players also found success in the classroom with all 15 of her seniors earning their diploma. Senior pitcher Janelle Valle became the program’s first Capital

One Academic All-American after she earned secondteam honors from CoSIDA. During her tenure, the Tigers earned five Capital One All-District selections, 15 NFCA Scholar Athlete selections and six C-USA All-Academic team selections. She also received the 2011 C-USA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Coaches’ Choice Award for fostering student-athlete development and welfare through a positive athletic and academic atmosphere among all sports. The softball program twice produced the school’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Former volleyball and softball letterwinner Melissa Nance was the 2008 Memphis nominee and former pitching standout Jenna Kubesch was nominated in 2007. Kubesch and Valle also earned one of 12 C-USA Postgraduate Scholarships. Mott also earned the C-USA Spirit of Service Award in 2011. Thees helped Memphis improve its win total by 29 percent in 2007, while losing one game fewer than its inaugural season totals in 2006. The Tigers’ power numbers also saw an increase that season, with the team finishing fourth in the league in home runs with 47 - 14 more than the previous season and a 33 percent increase. In 2006, Thees brought in a squad of newcomers and finished above .500 with a 28-26 overall record. The Tigers earned a 19-0 victory in its inaugural game against Grambling State and went on to a 5-1 start. Narrowly missing one of the six spots in the Conference USA Championship, Memphis finished seventh in the nine-team conference with a 10-13 record. Thees came to Memphis from Georgia College & State University where she had been the head softball coach and SWA since the fall of 1999. She led the Division II school, located in Milledgeville, Ga., to a runner-up finish in the 2003 Division II National Championship. Her teams set nearly every pitching, defensive and offensive record at GCSU during her five years as head coach, and in doing so, helped Thees compile a record of 163-92 (.639). During the 2003 season, Thees was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, the South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and the Georgia Collegiate Coach of the Year. Thees’ student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom as her team posted better than a 3.0 grade point average in each semester during her last four years at GCSU with nearly a 100 percent graduation rate. Following her team’s 2003 season, Thees was selected as a member of the coaching staff of the Russian national softball team and helped lead the team to a silver medal in the European Championships, the highest-ever finish for Russia in an international softball event. Prior to her tenure at GCSU, Thees served as an assistant softball coach and wellness coordinator at Lake City Community College in Lake City, Fla., from 1998-99. LCCC was ranked No. 1 in the national poll during both the 1998 and 1999 seasons and placed second at the JUCO National Championships in 1999. Thees was a four-year starter at both catcher and second base at Florida State from 1993-97. She helped lead the Seminoles to three ACC Championships and made the All-ACC Tournament Team twice, including once as a freshman. Thees was voted the team’s Most Inspirational Player all four seasons, and served as a team captain her senior year in 1997. She earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing and multinational business from FSU in 1997 and also holds her master’s degree in business administration from GCSU, which she earned in 2002. A native of Mesa, Ariz., Thees has twin daughters, Megan Jo and Alexandria.
