2014 REBEL SOFTBALL GAME NOTES WELCOME BACK The Ole Miss softball team returns a number of familiar faces for the 2013 season. In addition to the entire 2013 starting infield coming back, the Rebels return 13 of 16 letterwinners from a year ago, including eight of nine position starters and four of five starting pitchers. Joining the Rebels in 2014 are three freshmen, a junior college transfer, and two redshirt freshmen. PARRA THROWING OUT THE COMPETITION Senior catcher Marina Parra was tested last season, and many of the base runners who tested her were caught. Parra, an experienced catcher from Tustin, Calif., threw out an SEC-leading 22 base runners attempting to steal, including 14 in conference play. And now already in 2014 Parra has made her presence felt as she is tied for the SEC lead with two base runners thrown out. MORE THAN SOFTBALL During the heart of its preseason camp, the Ole Miss softball team took a day out to travel to the Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. There, the team played games such as HedBanz, Uno and Connect Four with the kids, and also went room to room visiting with others. “It was great to go somewhere where these kids are fighting battles a lot bigger than what we fight on the field,” head coach Windy Thees said. The Rebels also visited the National Civil Rights Museum and did volunteer work on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The team helped with everything from keeping the flow of traffic running smoothly, to working ticket booths and making sure everything was kept straight at exhibits. “Martin Luther King Day is such a special day all around the country, but especially in Memphis, because it’s right there at the Lorraine Motel,” Thees said. “I wanted our kids to see there are struggles people fight that are, again, bigger than what’s on the softball field. It was really great for our kids to go there.”

REBELS ‘WANT MORE’ IN 2014 After closing the book on the 2013 season with a doubleheader sweep, one thing was on the mind of Allison Brown and the rest of the team in the postgame huddle: We want more. “We had a lot of people tell us how great we were doing, and how much better we’ve been than we ever have been before, but our players got frustrated with that,” head coach Windy Thees said. “You don’t want to be congratulated when you don’t make the goals you’ve set out for yourself – even if they were higher than what the program has ever seen before.” Keeping that simple slogan of ‘we want more’ in mind, the Rebels are working harder than ever in hopes of getting more in 2014. “We’ve tried to incorporate that into everything we do this season,” Thees said. OLE MISS TRAVELS COAST TO COAST In addition to playing on the country’s most beautiful campus, the Ole Miss softball team also gets to travel and compete all around the country. One year after opening the season in Honolulu, Ole Miss began the 2014 season in Fort Myers, Fla., at the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast. This week, Ole Miss is competing in the College of Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C. After hosting the annual Red & Blue Classic in Oxford, the Rebels will close out their pre-conference tournament schedule with the San Diego Classic I in San Diego. REBELS HOST EXCITING HOME SCHEDULE Ole Miss has an exciting and challenging 24-game home schedule this season at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels play their first home games with their annual Red and Blue Classic from Feb. 21-23. Ole Miss will welcome Bowling Green, Buffalo, Northern Colorado, Saint Louis and Tennessee-Martin to Oxford in this season’s edition. In other non-conference action, Ole Miss hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Louisiana Tech and Alcorn State. In SEC play, Ole Miss faces No. 6/6 Alabama (March 14-16) and No. 28/29 Arkansas (March 21-23) in the month of March. The Rebels will then turn their attention to No. 12/14 Kentucky (April 11-13) and No. 17/19 LSU (April 25-27) in April. In all, half of Ole Miss’ 24 home games are against teams ranked inside the preseason top 30. All four of the Rebels’ SEC series are against opponents that competed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
CAPTAINS NAMED The Ole Miss softball team voted for junior Allison Brown, and seniors RT Cantillo and Marina Parra to be its three captains for the 2014 season. Brown hit a single-season program record 17 doubles last season, and a team-high 43 RBI, which is the second highest mark in program history. Defensively, the NFCA All-Region second team selection made 69 putouts and had 65 assists at the hot corner while committing just one error for a .993 fielding percentage. Cantillo returns to start in center field for the fourth consecutive season. After being named Freshman All-SEC and then second team All-SEC as a sophomore, Cantillo hit a team-high tying seven home runs as a junior and scored a single-season program-record 42 runs. Defensively, she made 104 putouts and five assists with zero errors. Parra, along with Cantillo, is one of four Rebels entering her fourth season in Oxford. As a catcher last season, the Perris, Calif., native threw out an SEC-leading 22 runners attempting to steal a base.

ALL-SEC PERFORMERS RETURN Ole Miss returns 13 of 16 letterwinners from a year ago, including All-SEC performers Allison Brown and RT Cantillo. Brown became the Rebels’ fourth All-Region selection of all-time last season when she hit .354 and set a program record with 17 doubles. Brown was named to the SEC All-Freshman team as a rookie in 2012. Cantillo enters her senior year coming off a 2013 campaign where she led the team in runs and was walked a team-high 25 times. The 2012 All-SEC second team selection didn’t record a single error defensively in center field.

Landwehrmier is from St. Charles, Mo., and has been named all-conference every year of her high school career. One of the top middle infielders in the country, Majam comes to Ole Miss from Pine Valley, Calif. Windy Thees, who started the Memphis softball program and built the Tigers into an NCAA Tournament team, is in her third season as the head coach at Ole Miss. With Thees guiding the program, the Rebels have increased their win total in each of her two years at the helm, and set numerous program records in 2013, including hits, walks, stolen bases and fielding percentage. The Rebels tied the program record winning streak in 2013, and the Ole Miss Softball Complex also housed its largest crowd ever. The Rebels have seen many individual success stories as well. RT Cantillo became the fifth Rebel ever to be named to the All-Southeastern Conference Second Team (2012), while Allison Brown became the Rebels’ seventh SEC AllFreshman Team selection (2012), and fourth All-Region selection (2013). In 2013, Ole Miss increased its total runs by 20, hits by 33, doubles by five, triples by two, home runs by 11, RBI by 16, batting average by .010 and committed 32 fewer errors for a program-best fielding percentage of .979. This comes on the heels of great improvements in Thees’ first year. The Rebels scored 73 more runs in Thees’ first year than the previous season, committed 14 fewer errors and raised the team batting average by .030. In the circle, Ole Miss pitchers lowered their team ERA from 4.64 to 4.55. “Windy and her staff have brought a great passion and work ethic to our program,” Executive Associate Athletics Director/Senior Woman Administrator Lynnette Johnson said. “Windy’s experience in coaching and recruiting has Rebel softball moving in the right direction. The program will see the results on the scoreboard of the staff and team’s hard work.” Thees arrived in Oxford after starting the Memphis Tigers’ program from scratch in 2005 and led her squad to the school’s best season in 2011 with a 36-14 record and the program’s first berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers finished fourth in Conference USA in 2011 with a 15-7 mark in league play, which was the best conference record in school history. In non-conference play, Memphis knocked off eventual NCAA Tournament teams Kentucky and Stanford and reeled off a school-record 10-game winning streak. Under Thees’ tutelage, Heather Mott earned firstteam All-C-USA and second-team NFCA All-Region honors in 2011, while Ashleigh King was named to the CUSA All-Freshman team. In her six seasons at Memphis, Thees’ players earned nine all-conference awards, eight all-conference freshman team selections and three NFCA All-South Region selections. In 2010, Lelani Barnardino and Vanessa Walle earned second team All-C-USA honors and Carly Hummel was named to the All-Conference-USA Freshman Team. In the short six-year history of the Memphis softball program, Thees compiled a 172-151 (.533) overall record and guided the team to the Conference USA Championship Tournament each of the last five years. Thees tutored the Tiger pitching staff to several single-season pitching records in 2011, including wins (36), ERA (1.81), fewest hits allowed (231), fewest runs allowed (116) and fewest earned runs allowed (86), while Hummel tossed three no-hitters. At the plate, Jessica Phillips set the single-season home run record with 15 long balls. Thees’ players also found success in the classroom with all 15 of her seniors earning their diploma. Senior pitcher Janelle Valle became the program’s first Capital
7
One Academic All-American after she earned secondteam honors from CoSIDA. During her tenure, the Tigers earned five Capital One All-District selections, 15 NFCA Scholar Athlete selections and six C-USA All-Academic team selections. She also received the 2011 C-USA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Coaches’ Choice Award for fostering student-athlete development and welfare through a positive athletic and academic atmosphere among all sports. The softball program twice produced the school’s nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year award. Former volleyball and softball letterwinner Melissa Nance was the 2008 Memphis nominee and former pitching standout Jenna Kubesch was nominated in 2007. Kubesch and Valle also earned one of 12 C-USA Postgraduate Scholarships. Mott also earned the C-USA Spirit of Service Award in 2011. Thees helped Memphis improve its win total by 29 percent in 2007, while losing one game fewer than its inaugural season totals in 2006. The Tigers’ power numbers also saw an increase that season, with the team finishing fourth in the league in home runs with 47 - 14 more than the previous season and a 33 percent increase. In 2006, Thees brought in a squad of newcomers and finished above .500 with a 28-26 overall record. The Tigers earned a 19-0 victory in its inaugural game against Grambling State and went on to a 5-1 start. Narrowly missing one of the six spots in the Conference USA Championship, Memphis finished seventh in the nine-team conference with a 10-13 record. Thees came to Memphis from Georgia College & State University where she had been the head softball coach and SWA since the fall of 1999. She led the Division II school, located in Milledgeville, Ga., to a runner-up finish in the 2003 Division II National Championship. Her teams set nearly every pitching, defensive and offensive record at GCSU during her five years as head coach, and in doing so, helped Thees compile a record of 163-92 (.639). During the 2003 season, Thees was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, the South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and the Georgia Collegiate Coach of the Year. Thees’ student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom as her team posted better than a 3.0 grade point average in each semester during her last four years at GCSU with nearly a 100 percent graduation rate. Following her team’s 2003 season, Thees was selected as a member of the coaching staff of the Russian national softball team and helped lead the team to a silver medal in the European Championships, the highest-ever finish for Russia in an international softball event. Prior to her tenure at GCSU, Thees served as an assistant softball coach and wellness coordinator at Lake City Community College in Lake City, Fla., from 1998-99. LCCC was ranked No. 1 in the national poll during both the 1998 and 1999 seasons and placed second at the JUCO National Championships in 1999. Thees was a four-year starter at both catcher and second base at Florida State from 1993-97. She helped lead the Seminoles to three ACC Championships and made the All-ACC Tournament Team twice, including once as a freshman. Thees was voted the team’s Most Inspirational Player all four seasons, and served as a team captain her senior year in 1997. She earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing and multinational business from FSU in 1997 and also holds her master’s degree in business administration from GCSU, which she earned in 2002. A native of Mesa, Ariz., Thees has twin daughters, Megan Jo and Alexandria.

2014 REBEL SOFTBALL GAME NOTES Western Kentucky 3, Ole Miss 2 Feb. 7, 2014 • Fort Myers, Fla.
Ole Miss 2, Florida Gulf Coast 3 Feb. 7, 2014 • Fort Myers, Fla.
Georgetown 1, Ole Miss 2 Feb. 8, 2014 • Fort Myers, Fla.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Ole Miss got off to a strong start in its season opener Friday vs. Western Kentucky at the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational in Fort Myers, Fla., but could not hold on to top WKU, losing 3-2. Sophomore designated player Madi Osias opened up the scoring for the Rebels Osias with an RBI double to the warning track in right field on the first pitch she saw. Osias’ double scored shortstop Haley Culley from second base and gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead. Senior pitcher Carly Hummel faced a jam in the top of the second as the Hilltoppers put runners on first and third with only one out away. The Rebels got out of the jam unscathed though thanks to a nice catch by junior right fielder Jamie Morgan on the warning track, along with a strikeout by Hummel. Ole Miss put runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth with two outs away, but could not add to its lead after Western Kentucky center fielder India Steward made a fantastic, diving catch on a well-hit ball by Morgan. The Hilltoppers took their first lead of the game at 2-1 with a two-run home run to center field by designated player Andie Martin in the top of fifth. Ole Miss responded in the bottom-half of the inning as senior first baseman Londen Ladner hit an RBI single to left field to score Cantillo from second. The Hilltoppers regained the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI triple to right-center, but the Ole Miss defense prevented any more runs from coming in, thanks in part to a nice toss from pitcher Shelby Jo Fenter to Parra on a sacrifice squeeze. Down 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Culley drew a walk to put the tying run on base with one out away, but the Rebels could not bring her home. In all, six different Rebels recorded base hits against WKU.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Ole Miss softball team outhit each of its opponents Friday afternoon in Fort Myers, Fla., but too many runners left on base proved to be too much to overcome in a pair of 3-2 losses to Western Kentucky and Florida Gulf Coast on day one of the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational. Parra “We played two really good teams, our players came ready to play and we played some solid defense,” Ole Miss head coach Windy Thees said. “We made a couple bad pitches and the long ball killed us today, really. That was it. We outhit our opponents and we hit the ball well, we just left too many runners on base. In two games, when you leave 19 runners on base it’s really hard to come out with a win.” Ole Miss (0-2) outhit Florida Gulf Coast 12-4 in the second game of the day for the Rebels. All nine Ole Miss starters recorded at least one hit against the Eagles (1-0), including two hits from RT Cantillo, Miranda Strother and Marina Parra. FGCU took the early lead in the game with a two-run home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles added another run to the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field. Ole Miss cut into the Eagles’ lead in the top of the fourth with a two-RBI single to left field from Parra, bringing the score to 3-2. Trailing by one still in the top of the seventh, the Rebels put two runs on base but could not drive them home and fell to the tournament host by a 3-2 score. In all, Ole Miss left 11 runners on base to FGCU’s four. “Offensively, we’re right on the cusp of where we need to be,” Thees said. “Every single person in our lineup had a chance to score some runners at second and third today and we just didn’t make it happen. Sometimes it was line shots to the outfield that were outs; we just got unlucky sometimes too. We have to come through. Even if it’s a crummy hit, we have to come through with a hit in those situations and let our pitchers get a little more breathing room. And our pitching just can’t give up the home runs.”
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Led by redshirt freshman Emily Gaitan, the Ole Miss softball team topped Georgetown 2-1 in Saturday’s opening game. Gaitan, a Tampa, Fla., native, threw a complete game against the Hoyas, striking out seven batters, while allowing just three hits and two runners to advance past first Gaitan base. “Emily Gaitan had a fantastic day on the mound for us,” Thees said. “She really had great composure and was able to throw all of her pitches for strikes. I think this was a great first win of many that this young woman will have in her career as a Rebel.” Senior center fielder RT Cantillo led Ole Miss at the plate with a 3-3 performance, two RBI and a walk. The Rebels had six batters record hits, and outhit the Hoyas 8-3 in the game. Entering the bottom of the fourth with a scoreless game and runners on first and second and two outs away, Cantillo hit a single up the middle to score senior catcher Marina Parra and give the Rebels a 1-0 lead. Ole Miss added an insurance run in the sixth inning with another RBI single up the middle by Cantillo that scored junior Jamie Morgan, who was pinch running for junior Lauren Lindsey. Georgetown scored an unearned run in the seventh, but Ole Miss prevented any further damage and opened the day with the one-run victory.

2014 REBEL SOFTBALL GAME NOTES Ole Miss 5, Liberty 1 Feb. 8, 2014 • Fort Myers, Fla.
Georgetown 9, Ole Miss 2 Feb. 9, 2014 • Fort Myers, Fla.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Ole Miss softball team bounced back on day two of the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Invitational with a pair of wins over Georgetown and Liberty at the FGCU Complex in Fort Myers, Fla., on Saturday. Behind a fantastic pitching performance from redshirt-freshman Emily Osias Gaitan, Ole Miss opened the day with a 2-1 victory over the Hoyas. Ole Miss (2-2) then topped Liberty (0-3) in its second game of the day 5-1. “It was great to bounce back today and pull out a couple of wins,” Ole Miss head coach Windy Thees said. “RT Cantillo really led the way for us offensively and we need to continue to score the runners once we get them on base. We still aren’t where we need to be, but we are heading in the right direction.” Against the Flames, senior pitcher Shelby Jo Fenter went 6.1 innings, striking out eight batters and allowing just one run on four hits. For the fourth consecutive game Ole Miss outhit its opponent, this time by an 8-4 count. Sophomore designated player Madi Osias got the Rebels off to a strong start in the first inning with a three-run home run well over the left field fence. Ole Miss added to its lead in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from redshirt-freshman second baseman Alyssa Invergo that scored freshman left fielder Miranda Strother. Invergo and Strother connected again for the Rebels’ final run of the game when the Peotone, Ill., native ripped a standup triple into the right-center field gap that scored Strother from first base easily. With the score now at 5-1 and the tying run on deck in the seventh, Ole Miss head coach Windy Thees went to Osias to get the final two outs, earn the save and secure the 5-1 win for the Rebels. It was the first save of the season for Osias.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Ole Miss scored two runs in the opening three innings against Georgetown on Sunday in Fort Myers, Fla., but errors in the fifth and sixth innings proved to be too costly and the Rebels fell 9-2 in the third-place game of the FGCU/ Four Points by Sheraton Invitational. “We were kind of rolling along there Cantillo and we made a change on the mound – Emily Gaitan had a great outing against Georgetown yesterday, and she had some good stuff, but she couldn’t find the exact spots to put it to keep us in there,” Ole Miss softball head coach Windy Thees said. “We got two outs and had to go to Madi Osias and got a ground ball we wanted, but we just did not make our defensive plays. It was a little bit of youth, and a little bit of our mindset being on offense when we were on defense, and on defense when we were on offense. We can’t do that. We can’t carry it from one side of the field to the other.” Ole Miss (2-3) outhit the Hoyas 9-7 on the day, but seven unearned runs off four Rebel errors allowed Georgetown to get the victory. “We were hitting the ball hard at some people, but we need to make sure we don’t just score and sit on it,” Thees said. “That puts a lot of pressure on our defense and our pitchers, and when one mistake happens the wheels can’t fall off like they did today. What we want to do is make sure we continue to get people on, get them over and get them in. We need a whole team full of RBI producers, and we have that, we just need the right mindset.” Senior right fielder Natalie Nimmo got the Rebels on the board first in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to the left-center field gap that scored Osias from second base. With runners on the corners in the bottom of the third, Ole Miss executed a double steal, scoring senior RT Cantillo from third and giving the Rebels a 2-0 advantage. Georgetown came back in the top of the fifth inning with five runs off four walks, an error and a single to take a 5-2 lead. The Hoyas then scored four more runs the next inning on three hits and three errors to take a 9-2 lead that would prove to be the final score.
