1

Ole Miss enters Thursday’s game as winners of the 2014 Nugget Classic after wins over Utah and Nevada. The tournament win was the first for Ole Miss since winning the Magnolia Classic in 2011-12. Toree Thompson was named MVP while Tia Faleru was named to the All-Tournament team.

2

The Rebels look to make it four straight when they take on the Lady Hilltoppers. With wins in the Nugget Classic, Ole Miss picked up its first neutral site and road wins. Last season, Ole Miss was 2-10 on the road and 1-3 in neutral site games. Ole Miss last won more than three road games in 2011-12.

3

Nugget Classic MVP Toree Thompson averaged 19.0 ppg in both of Ole Miss’ wins and posted a careerhigh 23 against Utah. Entering the weekend, Thompson was averaging just 6.6 ppg. With her 15 points against Nevada she became the first freshman to record back-to-back games in double figures.

4

Senior Danielle McCray showed off her passing abilities to the tune of a career-high seven assists against Nevada. McCray’s previous career-high was four assists set four times in her career. Her seven assists tied Erika Sisk for the most assists by a Rebel this season.

5

The Western Kentucky game is the first of 10 televised contests for the Rebels this season. Last season, Ole Miss was 1-9 in televised contests. Ole Miss averaged 67.6 points per game in televised games in 2013-14 and played five televised games that were decided by 10 points or less.

OLE MISS HEAD COACH MATT INSELL

I

n his first season as head coach at Ole Miss, Matt Insell laid the foundation for a promising future. Beginning his career with the Rebels, Insell led Ole Miss to a 10-6 non-conference record, including a seven-game win streak - the longest win streak for the Rebels since the 2007-08 season. Ole Miss’ non-conference schedule was highlighted by a matchup in Waco, Texas, where the Rebels took on the Baylor Bears, who had reached the Sweet Sixteen a year before. With Ole Miss leading in the final minutes, Baylor battled back to spoil the upset, giving fans a glimpse of the success to come under the vision of Insell.

What They Are Saying About Matt Insell: “We are thrilled to welcome Matt Insell to the University of Mississippi and the Ole Miss family as our new women’s basketball coach,” Bjork said. “Our search to find the right head coach took us to all corners of the country as we attracted top coaches from the basketball community. Coach Insell has coaching in his veins and was destined to be a head coach from day one. Coach Insell is viewed by many in college athletics as the top assistant coach in the country and his expertise in game planning, strategy, recruiting, and the student-athlete experience has been well chronicled.” Being part of a re-building job at the University of Kentucky has enabled Coach Insell to gain the necessary requirements needed of our new staff as we re-capture the legacy that is Lady Rebel Basketball. He is the perfect fit to make this happen and we are excited he is joining our team. Ross Bjork , Ole Miss Athletics Director “I am elated for Matt. He made the decision when he graduated high school to forgo playing collegiate basketball and concentrate on becoming a Division I head coach. I am very excited about the journey he has made. I don’t know of a better place to build his legacy than the University of Mississippi. Matt is a fantastic fit for the program. Deb and I, along with our entire family, are very proud of him.” Rick Insell, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Middle Tennessee State

After battling through the always challenging SEC schedule, the Rebels entered the SEC Tournament at the No. 14 seed, determined to take the momentum from a regular season finale victory over Auburn into the postseason tournament. Drawing the No. 11 seed Arkansas, the Rebels took care of business with a 63-62 victory, giving Ole Miss a statement win for Insell’s process. “I didn’t look at it as rebuilding, I looked at it as a process of getting us back to the top,” said Insell after the SEC Tournament win. “A win like this helps you get there.” Insell also led the Rebels to wins over instate rival, Mississippi State to give the first-year head coach his first SEC victory. In addition to the Rebel’s battle with 2014 Elite Eight participant, Baylor, Ole Miss posted victories against women’s basketball powerhouse, Louisiana Tech and sent the Ole Miss senior class out in style with a Senior Day overtime win over Auburn at Tad Smith Coliseum. Insell, who was responsible for the guards while also having recruiting and player development duties, served as the top assistant coach and helped UK ink three top-10 recruiting classes and seven McDonald’s All-Americans. During his time at Kentucky, Insell helped develop guard A’dia Mathies, a two-time SEC Player of the Year and All-America candidate, and Bria Goss who was named SEC Freshman of the Year. Prior to Kentucky, Insell was the Director of Basketball Operations at Louisiana Tech under Coach Chris Long. Before that, he was considered one of the top AAU coaches in the country, coaching the Tennessee Flight, a Nike Elite Travel Program, for three years. Insell earned valuable basketball experience while attending the University of Tennessee from 2001-2005. He worked closely with both the men and women’s basketball programs, serving as a student assistant/video coordinator under former men’s head coach Buzz Peterson and as an instructor at Pat Summitt’s summer basketball camps. The Shelbyville, Tenn., native transferred to Middle Tennessee State during the 2005-06 season where his father, Rick Insell, is the head women’s basketball coach. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in political science from MTSU in 2007. THE INSELL FILE Full Name: Matthew Ollen Insell Birthday: September 22, 1982 Hometown: Shelbyville, Tenn. High School: Shelbyville Central HS College: Middle Tennessee, `07 Degree: Bachelor’s degree in Political Science

“Ole Miss made a great decision when they hired Matt Insell. Matt is an excellent college basketball coach. I believe you have to be strong in many areas to be a quality college basketball coach. You can’t be one dimensional. Matt is an outstanding recruiter, a tireless worker in the area of player development and very knowledgeable from an X and O standpoint. He always had a great feel regarding in-game adjustments that will prove valuable to him as a head coach. More important than any of that to me was his friendship to our family. He is like a member of our family. He was incredibly loyal to the Kentucky program,

and we benefitted greatly from his contributions over the past five years.” Matthew Mitchell, Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Kentucky

OLE MISS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2014-15 Ole Miss at Western Kentucky Notables -This will be the first meeting between the Rebels and Lady Hilltoppers since the 2003-04 season and the first since both Matt Insell and Michelle Clark-Heard took over their respective programs. The HIlltoppers lead the series, 4-3 and won the last meeting 73-64. Ole Miss is looking for its first win in Bowling Green since the 1982-83 season and just its second win ever on the Hilltopppers home floor. -Western Kentucky is the second team from C-USA the Rebels will take on this season as the Rebel already faced Middle Tennessee, dropping a 71-65 contest to the Blue Raiders. Ole Miss is 56-26 against teams from C-USA. A Win Would… -Move the Rebels to 7-1 on the season and give them their third straight neutral/road victory. Those three wins would be the most consecutive road/neutral site wins since the 2009-10 season when Ole Miss won three straight neutral/road games with wins over San Jose State, at Florida Atlantic and at Arkansas – Little Rock. -A win would also give Ole Miss wins in its last four games, the longest streak since winning seven straight last season, and would equal the best start since 201213 when Ole Miss also started 7-1. Rebels By The Numbers 7-Number of assists Danielle McCray had against Nevada. Her seven assists were a career-high besting her previous career high of four by three assists. It also ties for the most assists by a Rebel this season. 11.3-Number of rebounds Tia Faleru is averaging. Faleru posted a career-best 19 rebounds against Southern and hasn’t grabbed less than eight rebounds all season. 23-Number of points Toree Thompson scored in a win over Utah. On The Road Again Ole Miss’ stays on the road traveling to Western Kentucky. After opening the season with five straight home games, Ole Miss faired well on the road at the Nugget Classic picking up two wins. Last season, Ole Miss won three road/neutral site games and with a win at Western Kentucky can tie that mark. Ole Miss is looking for more than three road wins for the first time since the 2009-10 season. Winner Winner Chicken Dinner By claiming the 2014 Nugget Classic title, the Ole Miss women’s basketball team won its first in-season tournament since winning the Magnolia Classic in 2011-12. Toree Thompson claimed MVP honors while Tia Faleru was named to the All-Tournament team. It is Thompson’s first tournament MVP selection and Faleru’s first career All-Tournament team selection. The Nugget Classic win was also the first in-season tournament victory in the Matt Insell era. Thompson Nets Career High vs. Utah Toree Thompson tallied a career-high 23 points in Ole Miss’ win over Utah. It was Thompson’s first career outing of 20 or more points and she became the fourth Ole Miss player to score 20 or more points this season. Toree Goes The Distance vs. Utes Against Utah Toree Thompson led Ole Miss’ long-range game, drilling a career-best four three-pointers. It was her first game of multiple three-pointers and her four threes were the most by an Ole Miss player this season. Rebel Defense on POINT Ole Miss head coach Matt Insell preaches defense and that was certainly Ole Miss’ strength against Utah. The Rebels held Utah to just 11 first-half points, the sixth fewest in a half and to just 38 totals points the fifth fewest points allowed in program history. It marked the second time this season that Ole Miss held an opponent under 40 points, as Mississippi Valley also only managed 38 points. The 38 points are the fewest points for an Ole Miss opponent since the 2009-10 season. Turning Them Over In keeping with the theme of defense, Ole Miss has been turning its opponents over this season. Ole Miss foes are averaging 26.6 turnovers per game, which ranks second in the SEC. Additionally the Rebels are averaging

GAME 8: OLE MISS AT WESTERN KENTUCKY 15.4 steals per game which ranks second in the SEC just behind Tennessee who is averaging 15.8 per game. Rebels Get It Done at the Stripe vs. Nevada It’s no secret Ole Miss has struggled from the free throw line this season but they put it all together against Nevada. Ole Miss went 14-of-18 from the line good for 77 percent, which is its best percentage from the charity stripe this season. Toree Thompson played a big part going a perfect 8-of-8 from the line, a new career-high and the most free throws by a Rebel this season. Briggs Hits Double Figures Kelsey Briggs joined teammate Toree Thompson in double figures with 12 points against Utah. It was Briggs’ second career game in double figures and tied her career high she set against Mississippi Valley State. In fact, freshmen Thompson and Briggs accounted for 35 of Ole Miss’ 52 points, which amounted to 67 percent of Ole Miss’ scoring. Speaking of Double Figures … After having just one player in double figures against SEMO, Ole Miss rebounded and had at least two players in double figures in each of its games at the Nugget Classic. This season, Ole Miss has had at least two players in double figures in six of its seven games with the lone exception being the Southeast Missouri game. Buzzer Beater … No Problem! The Rebels have nearly perfected the buzzer beater in the Matt Insell era, winning three games at the buzzer including a game already this season against Southeast Missouri. Tia Faleru laid the ball in off an inbounds play just as the time expired for her first career buzzer beater. Last season, the Rebels won two games at the buzzer both on tip-ins from former Rebel Kenyotta Jenkins. Winning the Close Ones Ole Miss’ one-point win over Southeast Missouri was it’s slimmest margin of victory of the season, but the Rebels are no strangers to close games under head coach Matt Insell. Last season, the Rebels played 10 games that were decided by 10 points or less and eight games decided by five points or less. Ole Miss was 5-5 in games decided by 10 points or less. Ole Miss has won its last two games decided by one-point including a win over Arkansas in the SEC Tournament. Faleru Leads the Way Tia Faleru is leading the way in her senior season. Faleru has led Ole Miss in scoring in four of its seven games and is averaging 21.2 points per game in the contests she has led Ole Miss. Faleru is averaging 17.9 points per game which is second in the SEC. Sisk WILL Pick Your Pocket Oxford native Erika Sisk is a thief and is averaging 3.1 steals per game after posting a career-high seven steals against Southeast Missouri. The guard has posted two games of 5+ steals this season and has posted multiple steals in five of Ole Miss’ seven contests. As a team, are averaging 15.4 steals per game which ranks second in the SEC. Sisk’s 3.1 steals ranks third in the SEC and leads the Ole Miss squad.

OLE MISS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL 2014-15 Ole Miss Bench Coming Up Big The Ole Miss bench has played an important role this season. The Rebel reserves have outscored each of their opponents’ counterparts, with the exception for the Middle Tennessee game. The Ole Miss bench is averaging 26.8 points per game and had a season-best 36 points in the opener against Grambling while being held to a season low of 15 against Middle Tennessee. Rebels Get It Done When Somebody Hits 20 Points When Ole Miss can get at least one player to 20 points the outcome is good. Ole Miss is 4-1 in games with a 20-point scorer this season and has only had two games without a 20-point scorer (vs. Southeast Missouri and at Nevada). Tia Faleru, Erika Sisk. Shandricka Sessom and Toree Thompson have each scored 20 points this season with Faleru hitting the mark twice. Last season, Faleru had 10 games of 20 or more points and leads all active players with 13 career games of 20 or more points. History In the Making The Ole Miss vs. Middle Tennessee game went down as one for the NCAA history books as it was the first time in NCAA Division I women’s basketball that a father and son squared off as head coaches. Ironically, it happened on the men’s side last season as well when Rick Pitino faced his son Richard. In both instances the fathers prevailed. #FatherKnowsBest Struggling from the Charity Stripe The Rebels certainly don’t have trouble scoring as

On the season, Ole Miss has left 58 points at the charity stripe including seven points in their six-point loss to Middle Tennessee. Catch Those Thieves! In keeping with the defensive theme, Ole Miss racked up 23 steals against Mississippi Valley. The 23 steals are the second-most for Ole Miss in the Matt Insell era and were just five shy of the team steals record at Tad Smith Coliseum. Rookies Shandricka Sessom and A’Queen Hayes led the way in the steals department with five each, accounting for 10 of the Rebels 23 steals. Ole Miss has 108 steals which is tops in the SEC. Margin O’ Victory The Rebels 53-point margin of victory over the Lady Devilettes was the eighth widest margin of victory in school history. It’s also the widest margin of victory since the Rebels defeated Winston-Salem State by 55 points during the 2009-10 season. Mississippi Valley State’s 38 points ties for fifth fewest points allowed. Movin’ On Up the Charts After becoming the 26th 1000-pint scorer Faleru will continue to reach milestones during her senior year.
