STONE “My art is an attempt to reach beyond the surface appearance. I want to see growth in wood, time in stone, nature in a city, and I do not mean its parks but a deeper understanding that a city is nature too-the ground upon which it is built, the stone wit which it is made. -Andy Goldsworthy
This book illustrates my fascination with material, particularly stone and how its used within the built environment its affect the people within the space and how their sense of scale is altered, their mood is changed, and how their sense of a connection with nature is felt. The projects selected within this book demonstrate my connection with this material, and the use of which has made my design come to life.

STICKLEY PAVILION Based of researching Stickley’s furniture design we had to come up with a design style in which his work would be later displayed. We were given the an existing site in which to model this design in, the research and the site dictated the overall design and how the pavilion would illustrate the furniture.

STICKLEY FURNITURE RESEARCH / SKETCHES In order to really understand what lays behind Stickley’s furniture design I researched furniture styles that belong to different time periods which helped me better understand his design.

DOMINO HOUSE Using Le Corbusier’s 5 points of architecture as well his concept of the domino structure we had to take these ideas and create our own house with a client in mind. My client was an artist couple which to me is a client base which ďŹ t this overall design style, where composition, structure, light, and material all play an equal role. My design allows for a comfortable living space with a connection to the surrounding nature while the overall architecture exists as an art piece all its own.

DOMINO HOUSE CLIENT BIO / SITE ANALYSIS
CLIENT:
PROJECT AREAS:
Your objective is to design a house for an unmarried couple, Mr. and Mrs. Zhang. Both partners are successful modern artists. They have no plans for marriage or kids over the next few years, and intend to live in this house for at least two years. They have purchased a site in the Berkeley/Oakland Hills that was never redeveloped after the devastating fire in 1991 that destroyed approximately 2,500 single-family dwellings. On the site there is an existing rigid steel frame, which was built to withstand earthquakes with no additional bracing. Ironically, it has been covered with concrete fireproofing. It bears an unmistakable resemblance to the seminal Le Corbusier drawing of the Domino Frame.

Mr. and Mrs. Zhang are artists. They wanted to have a space where they can not only create some of their work, but also exibit it. They needed a lot of oudoor spaces where they can get inspired by views and nature.

DESIGN PROCESS CONCEPT / PROCESS FORM STUDY Concept - folding / pleat / continuation Contrasts - curved / angled ; solid / transparent Concept of continues ribbon, that is folding to form the building, creating shade and privacy or opening up the view came from the location. Oakland hills are like pleats and the roads that are weaving through that area are just like ribbons that are folding and connecting different areas.

BAY TENNIS CLUB Though this was a sustainable design studio we were to pick a concept word that would help guide us through the entire process. I chose the concept of facetting a concept which I worked with several times with before. Facets and their ability to maneuver different sets of geometry led me to this overall idea where I could utilize this ability, to create an interesting form and yet include sustainable features.

LIBRARY During my 6th year of architectural education I’ve designed a library for my thesis. We were redeveloping an abandoned area in Moscow, Russia. My idea was to redesign the whole idea of what library actually is. Unfortunately nowadays books and especially libraries are becoming more abandoned every day. I wanted people, especially young generations to understand the beauty of it and make them interested in it by adding different features and rethink the way libraries work, as well as keeping it traditional approach.
74
75
RESEARCH SHAPE DEVELOPMENT / SITE ANALYSIS There is an abandoned railway loop in Moscow, Russia. My thesis group decide to redevelop the one of the areas that is currently covered with small storage units that are not used very often. The area we were developing had a school, museum, living units, shopping centers, library, and other buildings that created an independent area within the city. I decided to design a library for multiple different reasons: I really wanted to revive the idea of library while I noticed that all existing libraries where located relatively far from the chosen area. The form of the building was dictated by multiple different factors, such as: accessibility, views, insulation and direct access to the park in front of it. In order to support to my idea of bringing past into the future, I believe it was a good choice to mix traditional architecture (Roman period) with modern sleek design. That is why I chose to create amphitheaters where people could comfortably read anyway they prefer and enclose it with a glass envelope.

I would like to dedicate this book to my parents who have always supported me. I thank my family in Russia. Especially, Anna and Oleg Koval who have always been by my side. They made me who I am, taught me to never give up. MY FAMILY / Anna Koval, Oleg Koval, [Ivan Koval], Tamara Koval, Tamara Toropova, [Vladislav Toropov]. FACULTY / Leonarda Tamayo, Ernest Mariotto THANK YOU My family thought my whole life supported me in all my decisions. They also taught me how to be strong, no matter how hard it might be, now matter what stands on your way. Thank you for moral support and financial, thank you for staying strong while I’m so far away, thank you for inspiring me and pushing me towards my goals. Thank you for opening my eyes to things that matter and to things that don’t.
