WOOD “Wood is universally beautiful to man. It is the most humanly intimate of all materials -Frank Lloyd Wright A home, the material, the smell, the sense, all things which are part of human nature, we all connect to these elements within design. Wood is neither defining not defined within the home yet there is a connection with this material that connects us to this feeling of home. The designs and selected projects within this book illustrate my understanding with the application of wood as a material, these projects residential and commercial all connect to an earthy quality which I believe that wood possesses.

FALLEN LEAF HOUSE This residential project is located on the bank of Fallen Leaf Lake, to the south of Lake Tahoe. The idea was to design a contemporary house in the woods with a touch of traditional Tahoe architectural style. In addition to that, it was important for me to design a house that will embrace the nature that surrounds it, bringing the nature into the house whenever possible. Large windows, several outdoor decks, and a dock for owners boats were how I was able to bring these ideas to life within my design.
6
7
SKETCHING / PROGRAM The design includes a guest house and a main house. The main house: 6000 sq.ft. with : mud room, laundry room, garage for 3 cars, kitchen, butlers pantry, game room, powder room, dining room, main entrance, great room, master bedroom, master closet, master bathroom, ofďŹ ce for 2 people, bedroom, 2 bathrooms, nursery, sun room and playroom. The guest house (700 sq.ft) consists of: kitchen, gathering room, powder room, bathroom, bunk room and a bedroom with large outdoor patio.

FLOOR PLAN - LEVEL 1 OVERALL FURNITURE PLAN 1st floor has two main entrances: one from the front of the house that leads to a glass corridor and gives visitor a choice to enter either the dining room or into the great room, this allows for the user to continue to the guest house or outdoor deck by the water. The other entrance is from the 3 car garage that leads to the mudroom, which opens to great room. The mudroom also connects to a powder room and a butlers pantry, allowing for easy grocery unloading directly to the pantry and the kitchen. Great room consists of two main zones: the TV area and lounge by the fireplace that opens up a view to through a huge glass wall to a view of Fallen Leaf lake. The kitchen is connected to the great room, there is also a sliding wall that helps create privacy if needed. A Hidden sliding shelf in the kitchen opens up an entrance to a “speakeasy” room for entertaining.

DINING ROOM MATERIAL SELECTION / MURAL Dining room was designed to serve guests on special occasions as well to highlight a material choice which connects to the surrounding environment of the lake. Sleek lines of furniture and fireplace are meant to bring in the contemporary feel, while the choice of the materials relate to the traditional earthy feel. For this room I created a unique mural design, a watercolor drawing of flowers that are common in California. This decorates the entire wall of this dining room, this could be painted directly on the wall or printed on wallpaper.

DINING ROOM The 3D MAX Studio class that I took gave us the assignment to model a space and render it to our liking. I chose to model every piece with in the space from the dishware to the light ďŹ xtures, this allowed me to better understand the complexities within modeling simple forms to the most complex forms. I then rendered the space using the rendering engine FStorm, creating every material, setting the lighting, as well the environment in the background which grounds the rendering to the site context.

BootUP OFFICE The BootUp OfďŹ ce project we had for our Commercial Design Studio was to take an existing real client and redesign their space to better suit the needs of the client. After several meetings with the owner and CO we created several designs in which we took into consideration their needs and wants as well with our own design aesthetics. After the meeting and doing some preliminary site research we came up with a concept and then allowed that concept to take shape within the ofďŹ ce space. This concept along with the feedback from the client we came up with a design that could be realized at a later point for the client.

CONCEPT STATEMENT / NARRATIVE WEAVE - STRING - CONNECTION - NEST - WEB Those are the words that come to mind when I think of BootUP, It’s ideals and philosophy. If we were to connect all the people that have made connected due to this company we would have a giant woven pattern, consisting of interactions and new ideas. This company is the hub in which allows for these connections to be made, they gather the pieces of the puzzle and place them together making a beautiful image. The idea of connection, weaving, and strings is carried through the entire project through various elements. This concept suits BootUP due to the connections it makes with people to create and foster new ideas in a wide range of areas. Weave as a concept is illustrated in not only the string art installations creating semi transparent walls but in the plans which connected areas in which people work and collaborate. The lounge is one of the most important spaces within this project as it is where collaboration is born through conversation and interaction. This space has become my focus within the project as I believe that this is the space in which the majority of positive creation happens, though conversation and forced interaction.(see space planning diagram.)

Art Hotel A beacon in the night. This project of an art hotel is realized along the shore of Alameda CA, this design for my Spatial Design Studio utilized abandoned silos which became the based structure for the project. After extensive site research I selected the program of art hotel, this program was to revitalize the shoreline that has become derelict over the last few years. The addition of this program would bring in travelers from around the bay area and the world and would stimulate the area in a positive manner.
82
83
LOCATION: ALAMEDA, CA The assignment was to redesign old silo tanks as an art hotel. The tanks are located in Alameda right on the waterfront with a view to Oakland. In front of the silos are several boathouses as well as a harbor with sailboats which is where my design concept arose from. The area is very quiet, this is in part due to Alameda’s population consisting largely of people over 45 years of age. It’s a beautiful area dense with history and soul. That is why I believe it is important to bring more people to the area. My choice was to do it through art.

CONCEPT Ocean, winds, and sails bring us to a destination which through experience becomes one that lingers. Soft natural curves of sails as a contrast to solid buildings tests this concept. Seeing that cold brutal concrete structure, at first might seem to be un-welcoming, just like a cliff in the ocean, while getting closer you will see an inviting flickering light leading you closer to the final destination. Inside bright, inviting warm textures and materials, soft, calming shapes make you feel ever more welcome when entering the hotel. This concept lends itself to creating a welcoming atmosphere for the travelers and artists in my hotel. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The idea was to create an art hotel out of old silo tanks in Alameda, CA. It was important to create an unforgettable experience through the development of different kinds of spaces. As I chose to focus on music and filmmaking as a focal art sphere, it was important to add some functions to my building where artists can create their work and perform it as well. In my design I’ve decided to have a main vertical axis, a focal point. Along that axis visitors may experience three main spaces: courtyard, amphitheater, and atrium with hanging art pieces which create acoustic panels
90
SAIL A lone white sail shows for an instant Where gleams the sea, an azure streak. What left it in its homeland distant? In alien parts what does it seek? The billow play, the mast bends creaking, The wind, impatient, moans and sighs... It is not joy that it is seeking, Nor is it happiness it ies. The blue wave dance, they dance and tremble, The sun's bright ray caress the seas. And yet for storm it begs, the rebel, As if in storm lurked calm and peace!.. -Lermontov (transtation)
91
1ST FLOOR A wide ramp with several resting areas that are turned into a recreational space leads visitors to the main entrance. First, they enter a courtyard with one tree in the middle of the space this is a symbolic space to those that visit. Above it, there is an atrium that lets natural light in. The courtyard is directly connected to the lobby and reception area of the hotel, which allows visitors to have several choices to continue their journey.

2ND FLOOR The second floor is divided into private and public zones. The public zone contain an amphitheater and stage, that may be turned into a movie screen, a tech room with projector and other equipment as well as public restrooms. In this amphitheater artists can exhibit their work to the public who can visit the shows and interact with artists. This amphitheater is located under a large atrium space, where visitors can also admire a hanging art piece, which not only supports the sail concept of the hotel but has a very practical function - acoustics, that are so important in a theater. The seating is adjustable which may be folded which creates flexibility for other kinds of performances, with the possibility to create a great meeting space. The private part of that floor contains 6 living units.
