WHAT’S YOU SIGN? - Collages On my word collage I tried to put qualities I like about myself in straight font and pleasant colors and qualities I don’t quite like about myself – in sort of “Italian” font and less pleasant colors.
Since each quality evokes some emotions I put around faces demonstrating different emotions.
What is also interesting about my personality is that I tend to associate myself as going through different “seasons” and different “times of the day” in my life. That’s why I demonstrated it with different nature notions. 4
On the second collage (to the left) I tried to use realistic images to demonstrate three qualities about myself that I have chosen: the heart and the compass for being independent, the girl reaching – for the stars and the fish jumping into bigger and bigger tank – for being ambitious, and the hand holding a house – for being practical and believing in clear down-to-earth values rather than imaginary unclear ones.
On the third collage (to the right) I used more abstract by still clear enough images for demonstrating the same qualities. For independence I still used a heart, but a more abstract one; for ambitiousness this time I used an abstract butterfly because a butterfly comes into this world through a hard work of a caterpillar; for practicality I used cubes as cubes for me associate with being stable and reliable. 55
- First Sign -
The first sign I made mostly using construction paper, as well as cardboard paper and acrylic paint. I used three main images of my third collage: heart for independence, butterflies for ambitiousness and cubes for stability. Interestingly, when I presented the sign in class, my peers read butterflies as lightness and easy-going spirit (which is also true about me), cubes as creativity (obviously because of different patterns of design paper), and the heart – as a vibrant personality with a big heart which has a whole diverse world inside. I was able to successfully hang it with the push pins onto the wall.
66
- Second Sign The second sign of mine appeared to be more unified still preserving the main concept and images. I used foam board and acrylic paints, as well as the design paper for the cubes like in the previous sign. There was still a butterfly for ambitiousness (but also lightness and outgoing personality); cubes – for stability (and creativity); and independence this time I decided to express with golden color as gold is a quite selfsufficient metal which signifies certain status in society and, therefore, can stand for independence.
The abstract color pattern on the butterfly stands for different moments of life which flows into each other as life stages change.

JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY City College of San Francisco Wellness Center Just like a tree without leaves is not complete, a body without health, either physical or emotional, is not able to function well. On the foreground of the picture there are two trees, next to each other. When I saw them while approaching the Wellness Center, they made me stop, look closer and think... All humans are basically trees, some evergreen all year round, some going through different seasons and looking so differently in each of them. And the naked tree is hopefully not always like this which, I think, means that if we take good care of ourselves we get a chance to flourish even if we suffered depressed and leafless times of our lives.
8
8
I walked around before going inside and discovered another path to the Wellness Center. There was something magical about this staircase coming down towards the building, kind of emerging from the greenery. Everything around looked so light, with soft shadows, it smelled very fresh and felt very gentle when I kneeled down and touched the grass‌ The old tree seemed to me like an old wise friend, not meaning old in terms of age, but in terms of friendship lasting for years‌ Then, on the left of the tree I noticed a stump‌ When I looked closer I saw those numerous rings and thought about the long life that tree had and multiple things it witnessed around. So, one old tree was still there, the other was already gone and probably was used to produce some nice furniture or paper reminding us that we are surrounded by nature all the time even if we are inside, in small rooms or restricted office spaces.
99
Inside the Wellness Center it felt nice and pleasant. The corridors were inviting to join classes, curves and light colors made the environment look cozy and comfortable. Big windows at the end of the corridors made it feel like there were endless paths to one’s wellness and harmony. It wasn’t very crowded in 10 in the morning but still people were coming and I could see those were the ones ready to breath in the freshness of a new day and continue their daily things recharged both physically and emotionally… I entered the yoga class… and immediately thought that the environment in it really served its purpose and resonated with yoga exercises which were about to begin. Maybe it’s because it had those huge windows on both walls which together shaped a nice bright corner where morning light was entering the room and filling it with natural warmth and coziness. The view of trees and hills was quite spirit-lifting, colors on the walls were creamy, warm and very eye-resting. The class was very spacious which means that even being inside one could breath freely… 1010
Then I went to the pool. Looking at water has always charmed me, even if it is just still water and swimmers are not there yet. Blue color of the lanes, even the smell of the pool were vibrant. I touched the water and thought the temperature was just right, not to cold, not too hot, but perfect for starting your day with refreshing water activities. Water is one of the nature’s best energizers which reminds us how precious it is and how much we need it both on the inside and outside to stay happy and healthy! The Gym! Balls flying up and down, people running, talking, screaming of excitement! That’s where life seems to never stop! Red stripes on the walls looked like blood running through veins making one’s heart beat faster and faster. It’s huge! It has a lot of light, smell, vibration. Although, it is formed of basic shapes, it has a feeling of a very diverse facility. The shiny floor of the gym reflecting all the ongoing activities makes it seem even more spacious visually. When you look at this exciting game, it makes you want to join in and be part of it because we all want to be a part of someone’s life… 1111
MAKE A WALL, MAKE A WINDOW, EVOKE WONDER - The
Beginning -
This was my first attempt to draw a wall in SketchUp. Based on my journey to the Wellness Center, I was trying to show that usage of warm colors makes a place feel welcoming. And I also tried to emphasize proportion of the window and door to size of people in order to demonstrate that this would be a wall of a spacious place.
1212
- The First Model I needed to make two parallel walls but different from each other. So, my accent was on windows and how they serve purpose of whoever uses that particular room.
13
In the children’s room wall the windows are of different height in order to take into account age and height of the children.
In the living room where parents sit the window is large and tall inviting sunshine in and signifying spaciousness of the place which also includes high ceilings. Inside walls are colored yellow for warm, welcoming and cozy home environment. We all sometimes peep into windows and try to figure out what kind of life is going on behind them‌ 1414
- The second model + Narrative + Study Models Rise and Fall (1) “From far away I see some weird structure… The first wall I see looks like a worried or surprised face to me. But when I come closer I realize that it is just a random group of ovals and circles of different sizes. I can go through ovals and circles or I can just go around the wall where I see a staircase. It seems weightless as it doesn’t have a base, so before climbing up the stairs I decide to go under it where I see another wall with different polygon shapes. But when I go a bit further away from it looks like a happy face to me. Hm… How interesting, circles and polygons, a sad face and a happy face. I guess that means that we all are happy or sad, worried or excited in different moments of our lives… Then I come back to the staircase and start going up and then down and then up again until I reach a surface of a huge cube which is like a stage or a podium and it definitely seems very stable unlike the staircase itself which seems to be kind of bouncing in the air. Hm, up and down, up and down. I guess we all have our rises and falls in life, we rise and fall and get up and move on and rise again until our path leads us to some stable existence when we can finally say we are satisfied with what our life is…” The structure emerges in a park-line area on a grassy field where the surface assigned for its basis is covered with material recommended for playgrounds. Since the structure itself appeals for climbing and potentially falling there has to be safety element in its floor coverage. The two parallel walls with geometric-figures openings, as well as the rise-and-fall staircase with the cube, are made of rustproof metal and colored in light brown resonating with color of ground and trees in the park. The structure is design to provoke audience to question themselves on which periods of their lives were the periods of their rises and their falls and whether any lessons were taken from those experiences, whether they managed to get rid of regrets and that desperate desire to rewind life and start some things all over without making mistakes, whether they finally realized that those mistakes were inevitable part of their life and couldn’t have been avoided, and whether they already reached the firmness under their feet and the stability they were searching for or whether it still had to take something else to get there…
15
During the analysis of my model in class I was recommended to surround the structure by walls, at least partially, to make it more mysterious to the audience, as well as add passes to guide audience through the structure and make the two walls and the staircases more connected to each other with the help of bridges and ramps. The study models elements were based on these recommendations.
16
- Third model + narrative Plan
Having considered comments made in class, I tried to make my next model of the abstract Wall of Wonder more intriguing, diverse and exiting‌ 17
Four elevations Elevated entrance leading directly into one of the openings made it more exiting to approach.
More passes, ramps and bridges have been added to answer the question of how I would lead the audience through the structure. In order to make it more intriguing I added walls with openings around it.
18
In order to preserve the concept of Rise and Fall ramps and staircases are going up and down making the exiting adventure close to what we often experience in life. 19
Rise and Fall (2) “From far away we see some weird structure partially surrounded by walls with intriguing openings… We are curious about what lies behind those walls, so we are approaching it using the elevated pathway suddenly going down and then up into a big opening which looks somewhat like a big monster’s mouth. There are a lot of other round, oval, curvy openings in the first wall that we see. They have different sizes for both kids and adults to be able to go through. After going through the wall we see stairs and ramps going up and down connecting two cubes, bigger and smaller one. It’s fun to go up and down stairs and ramps or even go underneath them playing hide-and-seek. And from the bigger cube we can go down a slide leading us into one of the openings in the second wall which has a lot of polygon shapes: triangles, squares, rectangles etc also invite to go through. On the other side of the second wall there is a path leading us back to the stairs on the smaller cube making us go up and down again, and when we reach the bigger cube and go down, we are kind of curious of how the outside world looks like through the narrow openings in one of the surrounding walls, whether it knows of this little adventurous shelter we are in…” The structure is designed for children to have fun and play and for adults to have fun and think, maybe to even question themselves on which periods of their lives were the periods of their rises and their falls and whether any lessons were taken from those experiences, whether they managed to get rid of regrets and that desperate desire to rewind life and start some things all over without making mistakes, whether they finally realized that those mistakes were inevitable part of their life and couldn’t have been avoided, and whether they already reached the firmness under their feet and the stability they were searching for or whether it still had to take something else to get there… There are paths, curves, ramps showing many different ways of how to get around the structure and offering different options of what a visitor could do first: climb, go through, go around, go up the stairs or under the staircase, go on ramps and emerge on a different side of either of the walls etc… It is supposed to show the visitor that we have a lot of choices in this life and we, of course, often wonder which one to make. However, as we can see from the structure, whatever path we take, at some point we will get to experience all the parts of it, which means that whatever road we first take on our life journey it will eventually lead us to where we are supposed to be and to what we are supposed to go through. You can’t escape yourself… 20
- Final model + narrative (broken down into events) -
21
Rise and Fall - Up and Down (3) Event 1. Walking around a park I see an interesting structure surrounded by walls which evokes my curiosity. I come closer and see something like roof tops with window openings and a staircase inviting to step up on a path… Event 2. I decide to go up the path and find myself in a little pavilion with a roof which kind of seems like a little cozy home. When I continue my walk the path suddenly turns right and… Event 3… I go down the ramp through a big sun-shape opening which somewhat seems as going through the sun. Event 4. When I land I see stairs leading to the surface of a cube. I go up, reach the top and look around. It seem like I see two walls with opposite meaning, the happy wall and the sad wall, the smiling wall and the broken hearted one. Hm… That’s indeed like our life theater, constantly alternating tragedy and comedy.
Event 5. From the surface of the cube I slide down into a big triangle and when I look at it from the other side it looks to me like a worried mouth of a crying face which also has a big tear coming from a big eye. Event 6. Then I see another staircase. I go up and find myself even higher than before. And now when I look through the openings of the sad wall, I see better the openings of the happy one: the arrow pointing up, the happy heart, the smile and the sun seem even more uplifting.
Event 7. When I go down, I decide to go around the structure and peek into all those openings in all four walls. And I find it interesting how differently I see the outside world through each them. Conclusion: This playground made me think about many moments in my life. It sort of made me analyze when I was on top of my success and when I was all the way down. However, this roller-coaster never ends, we are constantly going up and down, moving from tension to relief, back and forth, around and around…
22
- Kit of Parts-
23
- Kit of Parts- (description of key elements): The key elements of the structure are walls. There are four of them: Wall 1 and Wall 2 have mostly surrounding, embracing purpose which are supposed to evoke curiosity when audience approaches the structure from far away. Wall 1 is cute and smooth, a bit childish and it’s definitely inviting to peek into those round openings. Wall 2 is more edgy, it reminds rooftops of houses placed very close to each other which symbolize our dense demanding society where we all fight for our place at the sun. However, since the rooftops and windows look like something familiar, the wall also invites to come closer and, although, building some tension, arouses some excitement as well. Wall 3 and Wall 4 represent comedy and tragedy of our life theater. Sometimes sad, sometimes happy – true about most of us. Wall 3 is apparently a happy one: it has the arrow pointing up, the wave wanting one to be on top of it, the happy heart, the big smile and, of course, the bright big sun. The fact that the audience can slide directly into the sun-shape opening definitely makes it very positive. On the contrary, Wall 4 is the sad one: it has the arrow pointing all the way down, the broken heart, the big sad eye with the tear, big triangular worried mouth and descending moon. However, these two walls do meet and touch each other with their edges and make the audience go around and comeback to each of them many times – we cannot be only happy or only sad, there is constant variation of emotions going in out life; we can be happy about one area of our life and not very satisfied about another, and so on… We never stop searching for that perfect balance.
The other elements (staircases, ramps, supporting walls, the cube, the roof) make the concept of the structure more complete since they add dynamics, rhythm, vibrant atmosphere and mystery to this place, at the same type providing audience with familiar notions (feeling of home and safety, walking on stable or unstable surface, going down the slide like in childhood and playing hide-and-seek with your inner self). Whatever challenges we have to face in order to take our life lessons and grow, they will always “find” us… even we make an attempt to escape or take a shorter path on the way to our dreams…

- Storyboard
Once, Maria went for a walk in the woods.
Mysterious Castle
She saw a boardwalk which led to the top of the hill, so she decided to go up and see what is there.
When she magnificent she saw surrounded gorgeous behind.
reached the top, a view opened up and a beautiful castle by trees with mountains further
25
Mysterious Castle (cont.)
Maria was so impressed by the castle that she started to look for a way to approach it and suddenly she saw a bridge not far away which seemed to lead directly to the castle’s main entrance.
When she crossed the bridge and reached the castle she saw a huge door which seemed to be very heavy. And suddenly, the door opened inviting the girl in with warm light and distant sounds of pleasant music.
26
Mysterious Castle (cont.)
When Maria went in she saw a spacious lobby with golden statues and a staircase with curvy handrails. Now she could hear the sounds of music more distinctly. It evoked Maria’s curiosity and she went up the stairs to see where they were coming from.
When the girl reached the top of the stairs, she found herself in a sunlit living-room with tall windows and beautiful golden furniture. Walls and ceiling of the room were light blue with white flowers on top of them which gave the room the feeling of spaciousness and coziness.
27
Mysterious Castle (cont.)
In the opposite part of the room she saw a young handsome man playing big ivory piano. Now Maria knew who was producing that beautiful music.
When the man noticed her, he stopped playing, invited the girl to go for a walk around the castle and tell about herself. Their conversation was very easyflowing and pleasant. Then the man told her he wanted to show her another special place in the castle, so he took her by hand and led through a hallway which led to the other side of the palace.
28
Mysterious Castle (cont.)
When he opened a glass door Maria saw the most beautiful garden she had ever seen in her life. It was full of flowers, fountains and waterfalls.. There was something totally magical about it.
Looking at the garden and her new friend, Maria realized that she did not feel like leaving that beautiful place and that handsome well-mannered gentleman who was very much like the man of her dreams‌

- FINAL PROJECT: Resources + Provocations - Folding Among folding, forming, sectioning, tessellation and tensioning folding seemed the most interested process for me to explore. Model 1
What I discovered and liked during my first experiment with folding is that it can be quite dynamic and show the process of transform a 2D surface into a 3D one.
30
- Folding Model 2
Model 3
31
- Folding Model 4
Model 5
32
- Folding - Reflection While experimenting with different models the following Folding Recipes have been discovered: • Thickness of paper together with folding operations determines both integrity of structure and form the folding composition takes. The thinner the surface, the smaller the structure is – spans between folds are less; • Different materials will have a different effect structurally. The following methods can be used for folding compositions: • • • • •
Slotting; Bending; Rolling; Combining parts; Layering;
• • • • •
Creating shapes; Compression/Release; Creating angles; Symmetry/ Asymmetry; Cutting out and more.
Different intentions can be fulfilled with the help of folding: • • •
Creating intimate vs. open spaces; Creating curvilinear vs. linear shapes; Showing transformation/movement etc.

34
PLAN A – WEST GATE SITE
35
Plan A – West Gate Site(diagram)
36
PLAN A – WEST GATE SITE (S.W.O.T) Strengths: quite a spacious site; can fit quite a bit team; one side of it will be totally free from bordering with a neighboring project, thus there will be less distraction; materials can be delivered pretty easily; it is visible from Cloud circle drive. Weaknesses: has a little staircase; the surface is not even; Opportunities: make the most of the site; section it well to locate the structure and materials; make use of the staircase. Threats: the stairs piece has to be treated with cautiousness as one can easily trip over especially when backing up. 37
PLAN B – SITE BETWEEN TWO TREES
38
Plan B – Site between two trees (diagram)
39
PLAN B – SITE BETWEEN TWO TREES (S.W.O.T) Strengths: the site is located between two trees which kind of well defines its borders; materials can be delivered pretty easily; slope of the surface is not very steep. Weaknesses: it is pretty high over the road level; Opportunities: make the most of the site; section it well to locate the structure and materials; make the trees a part of the design installation; Threats: one has to be very cautious while moving around the site in order not to fall down on the road; the trees and the whole environment should not be damaged.
40
PLAN C – COURTYARD BETWEEN TWO PLANTERS
41
PLAN C – COURTYARD (DIAGRAM) – BETWEEN TWO PLANTERS
42
PLAN C – COURTYARD (S.W.O.T) – BETWEEN TWO PLANTERS Strengths: the site is located in the courtyard which defines the site borders very well; the surface is very even; there is the faces installation which kind of gives the courtyard a “character”; visible from the classroom studio. Weaknesses: delivery of materials will be a bit more complicated; Opportunities: make the most of the site; section it well to locate the structure and materials; decide on best ways to deliver materials; the project design can be thought out to somehow include the faces installation. Threats: concrete surface will dictate base for the structure foundation therefore has to be very well though out.

FINAL PROJECT INSPIRATION
Anticipating the final project construction, our team was experimenting with different styles and looking for inspiration. My last model was about sectioning, and the idea of gable frames and triangular roofs naturally came to me as a reflection of my stage in life where I was desperately looking for a new home in a foreign country. Therefore, the idea of Home Away From Home was quite liked by our team, and we decided to take it as basis for our final project developing it into a deeper concept in terms of meaning and emotional content. 49
FINAL PROJECT Design, Construction and Analysis The West Gate Team Angelica Flores-Project Manager Jordan Church-Book Keeper Jeremy Sexton-Site Supervisor Olga Quincey -Photographer
50
Selection of Site • Greatest potential to draw in an audience from its peekaboo quality of being seen from the west side of Batemall Hall. Always a number of people passing by to get to their classes.
• It converges on the east stairway and the western pathway, can also be seen from the pathway to the north • It is the highest elevation and provides a clear view of the city • Flat ground, easier to work with it terms of construction and budget • Easy loading site for material drop off
51
Materials and Construction Starting from the ground up we used scrap wood to map out and outline of where we wanted the structures to go, and then we proceeded to hammer in the stakes to mark the location completely. From there we cut 2x4s according to scale and proceeded to assemble the gable frames. It was two “legs on each side where the stakes were, held together with clasps before being screwed in from the bottom and then attaching the gable to the top. For the benches we utilized inner frames and then place plywood on top. We had an agreement written in our Set Rules of Engagement, not to go over budget unless it was an emergency and absolutely necessary and we have kept to that arrangement having around 20 dollars left in our budget. In terms of gathering material, Jeremy and Jordan would take time outside of class to get them. So essentially everybody participated when needed in getting supplies and constructing the installation.
52
The Design -decreasing increments in height -nodal regions, seating at different elevations -site is relatively flat with a slight slope -playing with human perception of size by providing different experiences from sitting to standing
53
The Concept -Each gable frame represents a level of life, from early life where everything is spacious and easy and then gradually as we grow up life get harder -the forms are taken from the existing view of the city, it represents a familiarity and comfort reminiscent of a house. In each level of life sometimes we grow accustomed to that state and become comfortable, but to stay there would contradict our growth as human beings -Each time we pass the hardships we emerge stronger and ready to take on the next level having grown out of our past selves -But life isn’t always about the struggle, it’s a cycle of ups and downs. The installation spirals back to the beginning and the cycle starts again
54
The Design -Exposure of frames creates release and an open environment -exposure of frames from gable frames to the exposed framework and support of the benches
The Concept -Life exposes us to challenges and we discover more about ourselves in the process -We become exposed to the people who see us and to ourselves
55
Nodal Regions -Areas for solitude and social interaction -for singular benches there is a choice to sit on either side of the bench -when people choose to sit on either side of the singular benches it changes the circulation in the space
The Concept -no matter which way a person chooses to face, he or she will always find themselves exposed to others -In life there is always the opportunity to meet people by chance encounters and the choices we make.
56
The Center Three Step Bench - Concept The three-step bench is one of the key elements in our installation. The three steps are there to represent the climb, and having sit on the top with a clear view of the city, it is there to provide a moment of realization of how far we have come. The distant view of the city being a representation of the bigger picture of our hopes and dreams, distant yet within our line of sight, everything we hope to achieve and be in the world in the future. The steps are to be inviting, so that the moment is shared with fellow students, in understanding that when we surround ourselves with people who bring positivity, then we can all reach greater heights together. And what is even more important is to understand that we are here not only for ourselves but also for others because of the impact we may have on other people. And when we think about the different stages and levels in our lives, we come to realize that struggling in life, and getting right back up, is something everyone can relate too because we all go through it.
57
Findings, Discoveries and Insights -The scale model can end up looking different in real life once constructed -Construction changes design -Time management and maximum engagement of all team members can be challenging -Design is a process and the individual experience is different from a team experience
58
Conclusions Life may be an individual struggle but we are not alone. Everybody feels the pressures of life and everybody goes through the process of outgrowing their past selves. Its all about finding ourselves and meeting people who will bring positivity into our lives. So that together we can influence each other to reach greater heights and see the bigger picture. Being that this is a community college and students sometimes need that extra reminder to strive and continue on, our hope is that through our installation we have provided a place where a person can enjoy the moment of pause or subject themselves to the kinesthetic experience of crouching and making it through the gable frames. Emerging proud and appreciative of themselves, their surroundings, and the bigger mysteries of what lies ahead.
59
FINAL PROJECT Post-Presentation Critique Comments of the judges after the presentation in class: - Putting more gamble frames to increase the density of the installation would help articulate the pathway and lead audience; - As for the path itself, it would be better if it would not just go in circles but have some new elements to notice each time, as life does not always fully repeat itself, we are never the same as we were before; - Would be good to have a picture from the top, a plan to show view from different perspective to get a better idea of the design before actually experiencing it; - Precedent study should always be carried out in order to get inspiration and see what others did to express similar emotions and ideas; one should design out of the box in order to make design not only personal but also connected to more global ideas; Comments of the judges while going through the actual installation: - When going through the last (smallest) gable one runs into the post of the first (the highest) gable which is not really the best result of coming out; should have been more thought out as it is one of the culmination points; - There are two elements used in the installation – gable frames and benches. Another design solutions would be to make them more interrelated like use the same method – sectioning – to create benches, kind of make one element run into another; - Would be good to also emphasize the notion of flow while using the two elements (benches and gable frames), possible by playing with the gable frames’ heights reaching the “wave” effect. Overall impression from our installation was quite good. Especially the judges liked the concept of our design and how we explained the metaphor behind it. 60
SUMMARY Overall, Arch 101 course has been quite an enriching class for my personal experience. It has definitely been something I have never done before which made me go out my comfort zone and demonstrate openness and flexibility towards many thing during the process of study. Working individually and in team has opened new knowledge which is useful for my further life experiences. All reflections and critique heard in class have made deep impact on me and made me really think about my further steps. Thank you, Jerry.
