1. «THE NEXT HELSINKI» INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Specialitet degree 2014-2015 Project team: Ivakina Olga, Skalkin Artem

VIEW FROM THE CITY CENTER

SITE PLAN

«THE HEXT HELSINKI» is an international competition seeking for innovative ideas to the improvement of the cultural and public space of Helsinki and to the renovation of South Harbour. This competition was launched as an alternative to the controversial Guggenheim Helsinki project which did not show comprehensive approach and doesn’t solve complex city problems. If the city is represented as a house with a touristic center as its living room, than South Harbour has to be the main gates to the city. Now it resembles a garage. Our proposal includes two ideas, one folowing another: Local Idea and Global Idea. We suggest to create CULTURE CLUSTER as a main Local Idea, which unifies local points of public attraction and generates particular logic of space zoning. We

capable to show Helsinki to the guests without any touristic guides. PUF-MANIFESTO PEDESTRIAN URBAN FRAME - this is an assemblage of all city values, like in a living organism. This is a sort of circulatory system of the city with people instead of blood. Project PUF implies union by revealing links and elaboration of existing city values through the special form of city landscape. PUF is a unified system of the landscape solved by different shapes and spaces smoothly flowing one into another. System is positioned as a vivid guide for people like a «YELLOW BRICK ROAD» from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It leads from one beacon to another. South Harbour is

propose to divide the whole space of South Harbour into 7 parts (including legendary Kauppatori Market) - 7 projects purposed to approach people closer to art and culture on the way from the terminal to the city center. This spaces connect with other attraction city points by «ARTeries». ARTeries are new possibilities and spaces for self-expression, way of connecting public spaces, stating that Helsinki is a city of culture, art and creativity, and also a part of complex multielement urban structure, making the city healthier and

an important integral part of Puf. Main principles of the Puf: CONTINUITY, VARIETY, NOTABILITY, EXPRESSIVENESS. to another. South Harbour is an important integral part of Puf. Main principles of the Puf: CONTINUITY, VARIETY, NOTABILITY, EXPRESSIVENESS.

HARBOUR FACADE

MAIN HALL SECTION

ATRIUM SECTION

This project was designed during the competition «The Next Helsinki». We suggest to divide South Harbour into two parts: east side of harbour is intended for visual arts, west for music arts. On the west side instead of old hangar near Olympia terminal I propose to create multi-purpose music cluster, HYBRID OF CONCERT HALL AND PASSAGE. The Prototype of this building is a «splitted chest» permeable structure. This idea determines the necessity of generating logical connections in two directions: Terminal Olympia - City Center and Park Esplanadi - shoreline. Planning decision is based on a creation of the internal promenade, on both sides of which shopping pavilions are designed – passage. The project provides two concert halls: main hall for 1900 seats and small hall for 560 seats, passage also includes two cinemas under the main hall for 265 seats each. On the second level there is a common vestibule and the entrances to the concert halls from two

terrasses. Foyers and vestibules are designed in order to provide views to the passage atrium so that the customers walking through the passage can see what’s going on on the upper floors as so as the visitors of concert halls. This design solution of hybrid function allows to attract more people. Foyers are multifunctional and they can be used as museum spaces or for example for music concerts and public speeches.

Red Perekop is one of the oldest industrial centers in Russia, which enters a period of decline. It was the first textile mill in Russia in XVIII century and one of the oldest city centers. Now Red Perekop appears to be the typical «grey area». In order to solve main problems of the district, it was decided to use the principles of diversity and create effective economic pools of use, based on the urban ideas of Jane Jacobs. The main idea is a gradual transformation of the outdated industrial district into the contemporary educational and cultural center, based on high-tech industry, like it was made, for example, in Sheffield in England. I suggest to create two main points of attraction. The first point is the old factory building of Red Perekop, which is transformed into the educational and art center: Politechnical University with different laboratories, art galleries, exhibitional spaces and summer forum on the bank of the river Kotorosl. A block of old historical brick buildings to the west of the factory is going to be redeveloped into the students dormitory, linked by overhead crossings to the main factory building. The second point of attraction is a shopping mall on the north of the district, surrounded by office buildings and housing.

These trade&business part is located at the intersection of main boulevard of Red Perekop district and the main traffic artery - highway, connecting the historical center of Yaroslavl with residential areas in the west of the city. These two solutions provide mixed primary uses of the territory and hedge against a possible decline of one of the main functions - educational or business. Residential quarters are formed by three types of buildings: housing with a varying number of floors (type 1), six-storey housing (type 2) and high-storey sections (type 3). Blocks of houses form a permeable structure with a large number of pedestrian paths, the number of storeys decrease towards the river bank in order to provide spectacular views.

STREET FACADE

At the next stage of the project a new typology of flats with ateliers was proposed. In order to do this the gallery apartment house with plenty of possibilities for the creative activity was elaborated. Rooms in apartments were separated in different levels, so that ateliers occupy the upper level of the flats. On the street facade of the building special elevators were engineered, so that they can transfer heavy exhibits in vertical and horizontal directions and deliver them directly to the apartments. Plus they can be used as extra exhibition spaces. This project propose to manufacture side elevations from steel cargo containers. This technology becomes spread in some kind of cheap building development. Also this structure has an industrial aspect. DEVELOPED SECTION

SCHEME OF THE ROOF FORMING

When I was working in the “22-27” architectural bureau with one of my university lecturers Milan Stamenkovic, I participated in the project of residential and equestrian complex “Cavalcade Village”, which is located 20 km from Moscow near the Desna river. This territory belonged to children’s sport camp during the soviet period, but it was decided to redevelop remaining buildings into residential buildings with the complex of stables and zones for the horse riding. This project then became a base for my further reaserch in the redevelopment of outdated buildings and so-called “grey zones” in the University. In this project my responsibility was to redevelop one of the existing buildings of sport camp into the visit-center with the hotel rooms and also to develop a masterplan of the whole complex. In the masterplan the whole territory was divided into four zones. The first zone is equestrian complex zone in the northeast, which is separated from the residential buildings. Public zone is situated adjacents to it with the visit-center, restaurant, amphitheatre to observe the hourses and pond with a sand beach. The two other zones are residential: one of them includes apartment buildings and the other zone,

which is located in the south, is reserved for cottages with lots and has a separate entry road. The internal structure of the existing building of the visitcenter was altered. On the groung floor conference hall, shop, library and multifunctional lounge zone for lectures about hourses and different events was designed. The first floor is occupied by hotel rooms. The exterior of the buildings, characterized by vertical dark timber planks and roof sloping into different directions, completely alters the original boring concrete panel soviet structures and makes architecture more friendly to people and more suitable for living.

FACADE FRAGMENT

This project of appartment buildings in Sochi was designed as a part of the team of three people. Houses are located in the mountainous terrain near the Black sea. One of the main conditions of this project was the need to avoid a great deal of landtake and earthmoving because of the composition of the soil and expensiveness of this types of work. The decision was made to place a block with flats on a platform, where parking was designed. Plus, this block extends beyond the platform, forming a niche, which gives shade in hot days. Another condition of this project was the designing of small flats, which is easier to sell, so in the final project apartments were no more than 60 sq.m. The external appearance of the houses was a result of the influence of so-called “southern architecture”, so we used perforated panels in every terrace in order to provide more shade. The decision to chose white color was made, because it gives a “shadow play“ on the facade. My responsibility was to design plans for this project and to create a model. Plus, I proposed to design mansard floors of different hight, which made the form of the building more dynamic. Another advantage of this floors is that their special construction provides a round visibility to observe the spectacular surroundings. This project is at the construction stage now, but some of the initial decisions were changed.

SITE PLAN

This school is located in typical Russian sleeping quarters, and the appearance of the building is adapted to the surroundings. This project of the school was designed with the use of Grasshopper insulation script. This script helped to find the best location for the classrooms. On the first floor there are classrooms for pupils from 1st to 4th grade, a dining hall and a gym. On the second and third floor there are classrooms for pupils from 5th to 11th grade. Also this school provides ateliers for extra activity and a concert hall. There is a big square courtyard with the entrance from the main vestibule. The courtyard faรงade is terraced in order to provide a good view.

6. DRAMA THEATRE Course Project, 2013 Professors: Schuticov A., Perekladov A.

The situation of the theatre is located in the old part of Moscow city on the Taganskaya Square and includes two estates in extreme conditions. The project proposes to restore them and to redevelop into a theatre school and an administration. The globe, maintaining the auditorium, generates the main volume. In front of it the lobby made by the transparent construction converse with the street and invite the public. There are three halls and one of them is a Black Box theatre. They are connected with the main lobby, but also each of them can be operated independently by using their own small lobby. In the main building the restaurant was designed, which can be used by theater audience as well as by citizens.

WINTER RENDER

MODEL

This project was my individual responsibility, when I was working in “22-27“ architectural bureau. Our client had three plots of land in Moscow region and wanted to create three smart houses for sale, which are made according to the international environmental standards. The challenge for this project was to develop the concept of Eco house, that fits to the Russian environmental conditions. The shape of the building was designed due to the increasing of insulating plane, which was oriented to the south. This house uses many different ecological and sustainable facilities such as solar panels, commutators and microclimate monitoring systems. Certificated materials are also proposed to be used. It is assumed, that this house will produce 30-40% of the energy, which it consumes and give the unused energy, for example electricity, during the sunny days back to the city electricity network.

When I was at the 4rth course of the University, I started to attend Grasshopper courses, organised by Simplex noise, where I was able to receive basic and advanced knowledge in programming and writing of algorithms, such as Voronoi algorithm, different ways of shape forming, dividing the shape into ribs and the fabrication stage. Here are some of the examples, which representing the course and my individual works. This principles were used in some of my projects, such as a project of the school (insulation calculating), the metal and glass construction of the skin of the drama theatre, in calculation of acoustic ceiling, in the project of contemporary
