YEAR SINCE 1985 one (and later 2) european city is announced as the cultural capital of the condinent. Preparing a European Capital of Culture can be an opportunity for the city to generate considerable cultural, social and economic benefits and it can help foster urban regeneration, change the city’s image and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale. leeuwarden (holand) and valetta (malta) are going to be the european capitals for 2018. therefor the goal of this project is the preparation of leeuwarden in order to host the event and improve the future life of all inhabitants and visitors. the suggested strategie is taking under consideration the whole region of friesland and the connection between smaller towns, fields and the main city trying to spread the ‘pulse’ all over the ‘latent’area 6

goal is to locate the latent spots on the city center and turn them into active ones. triggers to each one of them will be a differnet social group such as students and older people. they will organise activities and actions according to their interests and attract visitors or inhabitants to join them.

in the central square of Leeuwarden, between two important and completely different buildings, this pavilion is going to work as an interactive epicenter of the european capital of culture. It is constituted of three floors, each one of them hosts a different function (information, exposition, interaction). Small balconies exist on each side of the structure, giving visitors the chance to enjoy the view of the square and the surrounding area. Two mirrors on the sides towards the two basic buildings of the square (the Justice court on the one side and the Frisian Museum on the other) are giving the sense of co-existance among the different sides of the square: the modern and the classical one. While the visitor is looking to the modern, contemporary museum he can simultanuesly see the classical building of the court behind him through the mirror and vice versa. (example of the devices applied in the center of the city)
