RURAL AREAS AS AN ECO-SYSTEM AGRICULTURAL CHARACTERIZED RURAL TOWN, SHANGHAI, CHINA 2017
ROAD ACROSS THE TOWN
Highway
INDIVIDUAL PROJECT
Rural Road
This project, Haiyong County, locates in Chongming Island, Jiangsu Province, near Shanghai, where remains lowest urbanization rate around due to a special policy that serves as backup land for Shanghai’s future use. In Jiangsu Province, north of Chongming Island, existed numerous villages and small towns mainly depend on agriculture. Haiyong County is a small town with population of 6235 and among whom, 82.6% are doing agri-culture. This is a very typical condition of China that the rural town needs to be retrofitted and upgrade to modern town. So it is an exemplary case of rural consolidation where village clusters are being transformed into a new modern agriculture town.

FROM THE MEMORIES OF THE PAST After the analysis of the existing houses, we can conclude there are mianly three types of housing programmes, with three different types of family patterns. However, nowadays, each existing houses cannot meet the need of their owners. So based on the three original types and new needs of their owners, I designed three new types for each kind, and I also offer different choices for each new type.
Cluster 3
CLUSTER CHART Although rural life differs from urban life, meeting points, recreational areas are also needed in each clusters, farming and gardening areas are unique in rural areas. P 13

MAN-LAND RELATIONSHIP The lifestyle of people from the rural areas heavily relies on the earth, especially the earth near their home. The new types also deal with the relationship between their lifestyle and the earth. For example, the threegeneration family needs place for house-hold workshops to make money, elderly people may need semiprivate areas and young people are more inclined to open areas, so based on the three original types and new needs of their owners, I designed three new types for each kind, and I also offer different choices for each new type.
LIFE BETWEEN BUILDINGS The linear road can be the public space for the people in the village, different activities can happen on the road, such as talking, dancing, drying the crops and so on. P 15

RURAL AREAS AS AN ECO-SYSTEM The urban area was considered as the site of complex relations (economic, political, social, and cultural) , therefore, it requires an equally complex range of perspectives and responses that can address both current conditions and future possibilities. So is the rural areas. The rural areas in China are even more complex than the cities, because they are usually regarded as the " root" of Chinese history and the symbol of "Chinese" in some ways.
INTEGRATING WITH RURAL LANDSCAPE Embedded in the rural context, the buildings not only comply the needs of different types of families but also largely coordinates with the geographical features. P 16

THE LOOP'S ECOLOGICAL STRATEGY
Using the loop"s ecological strategy to reduce the effect from the industrial area and the process of the renewal of the ISF, and also create the potential green common space for the future. One of the main purposes, to break down the barriers completely, can be implemented in the last phase. In an indirect way the concept of "gated communities" can be changed. The green structure can be used instead of the concrete walls. Commercial and social activities located in the red points will improve the life and income of people in the neighborhood.

Project Seven: Space As Power
SPACE AS POWER SEU 2015 SPRING URBAN DESIGN STUDIO, NANJING, CHINA INDIVIDUAL PROJECT The site is located along the edge of the city walls of Nanjing, where the downtown and the north area meet. While it is next to the main axis of Nanjing, the east of this site is Xuanwu Lake, and the north is Mufu Hill. The site contains villa area owned by the army, the old industrial plant and the original factory`s residential area. Through the interpretation of the project, the evolution of spatial politics in the surrounding area of Shence gate is used to determine the vision of the surrounding area. Starting from the urban form and the spatial structure, this project discusses how to reshape of the VALUE OF PUBLIC SPACE through urban design.

SPACE AS POWER
URBAN FOR THE PUBLIC
The re-opening of the SHENCE GATE is a symbol of the transition from political rights to public rights in the north corner of Nanjing, which brought the possibilities of the revitalization of urban vitality in the site..
The design takes an axial space of the gate as a core and combines a series of open spaces to sort out the complicated and chaotic historical urban space. P 22
