Dear Olin Supporters, n these pages, you will read the names and storie of loyal and enthusiastic Olin donors, partners and volunteers. It is because of this community that Olin has the means to do the important work of educating the next generation of world-changing engineers. This year, Olin launched a bold new direction in our institution’s approach to fundraising. Building on our success in developing crossfunctional approaches to advance Olin’s strategic vision, we are working together to develop a culture of philanthropy and a dedication to revenue generation throughout the College that will have a positive impact on our past, present and future Olin engineers. We are grateful for you and the many parents, alumni, students, faculty, staff, corporations, foundations, trustees and friends that turned their belief in Olin’s mission into the vital means for Oliners to achieve so much this year.

Claudia Corwin and Anthony Otoadese P’21 Through our son, Max, our family has been part of a visionary experience in engineering education. The students at Olin are not just cogs in the wheel of academia but really part of a movement,” says Claudia Corwin P’21. Corwin and her husband, Anthony Otoadese, were not originally sold on the idea of Max attending Olin until attending Candidates’ Weekend. But “within a very short time I realized that something very special was happening.” “I really don’t know what the formula is; I can’t articulate what happened,” said Corwin. “This potentially really intimidating experience was really positive and formative. It spoke volumes to us and to Max.” (l-r): Claudia Corwin with Max and his brother, Ben Otoadese (not pictured are Max’s sister, Ava, and father, Anthony).
Corwin and Otoadese continue to support Olin through annual donations. “We want to see other students experience this unique place and encourage them to take the leap as well,” she says. “We want to sustain Olin. Olin is young. It takes active participation to sustain an organization like Olin. I feel a responsibility for that, especially since our son had such a formative experience.”

Zack Davenport ’20 or Zack Davenport ’20, an Affordable Design and Entrepreneurship (ADE) capstone project in the Mississippi Delta launched his desire to use education to bring good into the world. In the summer of 2018, Davenport helped convey to students how engineers think—a style of problem-solving that was new to these high schoolers, many of whom had never seen a 3D printer or used a soldering tool before. While he was on location, Davenport met the founder of Lobaki Inc., located in nearby Jackson, which uses immersive VR technology to make education more accessible and engaging. He did a side project for them that summer, and that innovative work for Lobaki led to an invitation for more projects the following summer, which led to a job offer after Davenport graduated in 2020. “I felt really lucky because they were one of the few companies hiring during the pandemic,” said Davenport. “It’s the perfect work for me because I get to do all of the super fun design stuff that I grew so passionate about in college, but in VR I’m not limited by the laws of physics as much and I can create whatever I want.”
F
Today, Davenport is Lobaki’s manager of education and special projects, an important role that has him running the company’s VR content development for educational experiences used in schools across the state of Mississippi. “A lot of what I learned at Olin was harnessing my passion for creativity and bringing my ideas to life by designing things through ME,” said Davenport. “Olin teaches you how to dive into a problem or discipline that you’ve never had experience with, and how to be in that space of learning new things and growing as a person and a professional. This kind of problem-solving mindset can get you far in life, no matter what your discipline is.” “I gained so much from my Olin experience, and even since graduating, I’ve felt like I’m still a part of the community,” said Davenport. “Donating to Olin not only makes me feel connected to the community, but also helps ensure that the College is able to give to future students what it gave to me.”

Emily Tow Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering mily Tow joined the Olin faculty in 2019 after earning her doctorate at MIT in Mechanical Engineering. This year she is teaching Quantitative Engineering Analysis (QEA) and Transport Phenomena. She also leads the Clare Boothe Luce Program at Olin, a research program for women students which is also profiled in these pages (p.14). It wasn’t an accident that Tow chose Olin for her first teaching position. Instead, it was a mission-driven decision. “I believe in changing engineering education in support of changing the world,” she says. At Olin, Tow’s passion for thermal science, teaching and sustainability drive her work. Her lab’s current research focuses on improving energy efficiency in water reuse, and she is working with four students to develop a low-energy batch reverse osmosis system for increasing water recovery from contaminated agricultural runoff. Tow donates to Olin, with emphasis on the Aaron Hoover Fund, because she wants to be part of an effort to meet the full financial need for women students of color.

Ruth Levine Director of Business Development As a mechanical engineer trained in a traditional engineering program, there were some ways in which I didn’t feel prepared when I entered the workforce. I couldn’t put my finger on it at the time, but when I first heard about Olin’s founding and mission twenty years ago, I started to identify where my own preparation might have made me a better engineer.” Levine manages strategic industry partnerships for Olin, including leading the efforts to develop each year’s SCOPE projects. She recently became part of a new team that is working together with faculty and staff across Olin to explore and develop new external engagement opportunities that align with the institutional vision for Olin’s future. “After eleven years at Olin, I think I’m still most passionate about the hands-on work and self-directed learning that builds students’ confidence. I’m proud to be part of the built-in precept that Olin is preparing engineers to do good in the world; and that what we learn, and what we do well, we will share with other institutions for the greater good.”
Levine is also a longtime Olin donor. “I care deeply about providing access to students for whom the cost of attending might be an impossible barrier, I care about supporting environmentally responsible choices for the College’s operation, and I care about the broader mission and messaging about engineering for good and for all.”

Malinda and Glen Chapman P’20 P’17 P’15 alinda and Glen Chapman live in upstate New York. Glen is now a fulltime “birder” after retiring from his practice as a family physician. Malinda used to teach science at a local community college. Although it’s been some time since they last stepped foot on Olin’s campus, they continue to have fond memories of Expos and Family Weekends from years past. The Chapmans have four children, three of whom attended and graduated from Olin. It’s been more than 10 years since they first toured the Needham campus, but Malinda still remembers that an engineering school with an emphasis on projects stood out, and so did Olin’s unique admission process. “Candidates’ Weekend is sort of a Harry Potter sorting hat. The kids figure out if this is the place for them and the folks at Olin figure out if the person will thrive.” Ben Chapman ’15 was the first to attend Olin, followed by Riley ’17 and Colvin ’20. “Our youngest and oldest took ADE and traveled to Africa and they have a real interest in affordable design for the rest of the world. Our middle son was very involved in REVO electrical—he spent every waking moment working on his electric vehicle.”

All three learned to unicycle. “There’s always a twist at Olin. From the conductorless orchestra to fire arts, Olin embraces a diversity of interests and there are shining examples of a twist on the ordinary. The campus is comfortable and there is a family atmosphere in some ways.” Ben, Riley and Colvin were all very different students. Ben and Colvin majored in mechanical engineering and Riley pursued robotics and computer science. Now all three are employed on the West Coast working on coding, designing laboratory equipment and autonomous vehicles. “Education is about stretching; they were stretched academically, socially in ways they would not have elsewhere. I am incredibly grateful they had that experience,” said Glen. The half tuition scholarship made it possible for the Chapmans to consider sending all three boys to Olin. “I’m a rural family doctor. Scholarships that were meaningful made it possible for us to afford the education.” And that’s why, even now, after their sons have long graduated from Olin, the Chapmans continue to give back.
IMPACT 2021
Susan Fredholm Murphy ’06 and Chris Murphy ’06 usan and Chris Murphy, both members of Olin’s first graduating Class of 2006, have maintained a longstanding commitment to the College over the years along with their peers. “Alongside all of our classmates in the class of ’06, we personally benefited greatly from the merit-based tuition scholarship, in a manner that was unique to Olin,” says Susan. Since the inception of the Alumni Merit Scholarship Fund, the Murphys have split their donation between the AMSF and the Olin Fund each year. “Our goals are to both support the current great work being done at Olin via the Olin Fund, and to also support the long-term goal of reviving a full-tuition merit scholarship for all students via the AMSF.” Susan and Chris live near Boston with their children and enjoy connecting with other alumni families in the area. After graduating from Olin, Chris pursued a Ph.D. focused on subsea robotics at MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He enjoys building subsea systems and working on how to sense and communicate underwater using acoustics. “I enjoy the mix of engineering, math and science required to work in such a unique domain,” he says.
S
Olin gave us so much— financially via the merit scholarship, educationally, and personally via the network of amazing people that we now know well. We want to ‘pay-it-forward’ and ensure others can likewise have such great experiences.”
Susan recently joined Boston University as the executive director for a new research initiative around sustainable finance after spending the last 12 years in the consulting industry. Her new role in BU’s Impact Measurement and Assessment Program is to lead academic research projects that help the finance industry understand how they can incorporate environmental and social metrics into their corporate assessments. “The Olin community has always inspired me to produce high quality work that can make a positive difference, and it continues to do so,” says Susan. “It’s a community full of people that take on hard interdisciplinary challenges, set high expectations for each other on what can be achieved, and then support each other to make such achievements reality.”

Jordyn Burger ’14
As a woman in tech, I know how important it is that finances aren’t a barrier for women and non-binary folx to have access to an Olin education.”
I wouldn’t have been able to come to Olin without financial aid,” said Jordyn Burger ’14, and even with the support of Olin’s half tuition scholarship, it was extremely difficult at times. “I understand the value of making engineering education accessible and I want to help make it accessible for Olin students.” When Aaron Hoover, professor of mechanical engineering at Olin from 2011 to 2020, died on December 30, 2020 after surviving for 20 months with glioblastoma multiforme (grade 4), the Olin community rallied to honor his memory. Olin created the Aaron Hoover Memorial Fund in partnership with Aaron’s family to support Women of Color engineers at Olin. A brilliant and deeply loved member of the Olin community, Aaron was instrumental in shaping a generation of bright young Olin engineers. “Aaron was such an icon of my Olin experience. He came in when we did. He spoke at my Commencement,” said Jordyn. “When I look back at SCOPE, he advised one of the other teams, but he’d always chat with us and ask thoughtful questions in design review. He always made it fun.”
Jordyn donated to the Hoover Fund and was part of Olin’s alumni fundraising outreach effort. “Everyone responded with ‘of course!’” she said. “He touched so many people, even if they weren’t in the mechatronic space. We all felt so strongly about making sure he’s forever a part of the community.” Engineering school was all about being a problem solver, Jordyn says, something that has helped her in every professional role. These days, Jordyn lives in the Boston area and works for a digital pathology company in a UX design researcher role. She is focused on augmenting the pathology process with machine learning in order to improve patient care. “I can’t imagine Olin without my peers. What I miss the most is the way we would always help each other out. It’s hard to think about Olin and NOT smile.”

Rachel Won ’22 ne of the most valuable lessons Rachel Won ’22 has learned at Olin has been to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. “The fluidity gives you flexibility,” she says. “That’s how life is.” Whether problem solving for a technical project or team dynamics, “Olin has taught me to find peace through asking for help and knowing what I need help with. Creating that structure ourselves is a strong suit of Oliners, rather than having it created for us. When you show you’re vulnerable, people are willing to be vulnerable with you.” Rachel had the good fortune to travel to Ghana for ADE in the winter of 2020—what she thought was her senior year—and then the pandemic changed her plans. Now, as the only one on her ADE team who has been to the place and met the people Oliners are designing food processing technology for, her perspective is extra valuable to her teammates on an already collaborative project. “Whenever people ask me why I chose ADE over SCOPE, I explain that it really gives you a chance to do a different kind of engineering—engineering for affordability,” she says of her formative ADE experience. “Something that really struck me is that a lot of products in this world are designed for the

top 10% of consumers in developed, wealthy countries. Engineering for affordability is a completely different kind of mindset and framework. I had done some industry internships before and ADE was a chance for me to take a step back and see there were different kinds of engineering and different schools of thought that come with designing for different people and populations.” Rachel gives to Olin because she believes when you donate, you show the College what is important to you. “As a student there are a lot of things you can do to support Olin. Donating is one way I’m able to show my support,” she says. “It feels a little more impactful and action-oriented than other ways and it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to make a donation.”

Olin has shaped a lot of what my personal and professional life looks like today. I am grateful for the Olin community and the unique mindset and competencies I have developed through my Olin education, and I know that there are a lot of people and resources involved in realizing both the community and its educational outcomes. I work as an embedded software engineer at an early-stage startup called Meter (find us at meter.com!). I’m enjoying the fast-paced and technically demanding nature of working at an ambitious company solving hard problems. I just moved to San Francisco for this job and I am appreciating the great hiking and am trying out new recipes with the fresh produce available in the Bay Area. Supporting my class gift was a small way to more permanently give back to a community and campus I have gotten a lot out of and have come to care a lot about. In general, donating is a tangible way to help sustain Olin and specifically support (and vote with your dollar for) specific initiatives on campus and beyond.
My donation was to the Class of 2021 gift fund; because we were not able to spend our senior year together on campus, we wanted to create a shared outdoor gathering space on campus that would foster meaningful in-person interactions. I hope that my contribution will help provide members of the Olin community with a place for fruitful conversations, spontaneous interactions, and more.”

Henry Luce Foundation he Henry Luce Foundation awarded Olin a three-year grant in 2019 to establish the Clare Boothe Luce Research Scholars Program. This program gives women students at Olin the opportunity to conduct research projects in areas that typically have few women within the fields of engineering, science, or math. This grant supported nine students in 2020-21 and 10 students in 2021-22, with one student participating during both summers. “Even though women are well represented at Olin, as soon as they leave the Olin bubble, they’re still incredibly under-represented in engineering and technology fields,” says Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Emily Tow, who wrote the grant proposal. “They can now go out into the world more confident about their ability to do research.” The student researchers each chose an Olin faculty member to work with. Some of the projects fell into the data science realm, such as Alli Busa ’21’s work with professor Scott Hersey on quantifying the effect of air pollution from Logan airport on East Boston communities. The project entailed validating, cleaning and analyzing data from sensors that Oliners helped make and set up. “Our goal is to help inform people in East Boston about how the presence of the airport affects

them and to provide environmental justice groups with the information they need to push for regulations and policies,” she says. “I’ve enjoyed doing environmental work that I know will have an impact.” Marion Madanguit ’24 and Maeve Stites ’23 worked to help the city of Providence, RI, optimize their scooter sharing program. They studied the service’s equity of access and worked with the city to investigate how ridership, coverage, and service vary across the region to identify underserved communities. “This summer completely changed my attitude toward data science and STEM research,” says Marion. “I’ve learned that both are incredibly vibrant fields that allow people to be curious and to explore aspects of the world that need more exploring.” Clare Boothe Luce was a playwright, journalist, U.S. Ambassador to Italy, and the first woman elected to Congress from Connecticut. Her estate established a program to encourage women to “enter, study, graduate and teach in science, mathematics and engineering.” Olin’s prior CBL grant program ran from 2012 to 2017 and inspired many of its 28 participants to continue to graduate school.
