Commended A compact product and an innovative idea. The seat is the main focus, making it easy to get baby in and out. Potential disadvantages are noisy motors and the project would be high risk in terms of development time and cost.

Hello We often undertake live projects with industry collaborators, this year is no exception. Such things can be a double-edged-sword, in that the things we do are often restricted by terms of an NDA. We always try to balance the educational benefit of the experiences the projects provide with such restrictions.

DESIGN FOR

INDUSTRY

Contacts; For any third year students; David O’Leary, Third year tutor david.oleary@northumbria.ac.uk

The Design for Industry course has a 30+ year proven track record in working closely with industry, one that we are proud of. We firmly believe that this helps to train design graduates that have real world experience of working with clients to innovate and add value to their business.

0191 243 7224 Second year students, contact; Simon Scott-Harden Second year tutor simon.scott-harden@northumbria.ac.uk

We get some great feedback from those we work with – students are lauded for their ability to quickly understand the values of a brand and translate that into new offerings and opportunities.

0191 227 3157 General Placement Enquries; Lee Sweeney

We would therefore like to beg your indulgence and perhaps to look beyond the veneer of ‘sketches’ and ‘renderings’ to their skills in defining the context of the design opportunity and their appreciation of the key design criteria – ones that we feel set us apart from other courses. Our aim is for our students to be able to add value and gain valuable insights that can allow you to innovate.

Electronics Development.

I decided to use piezo disks as I was very interested in how they could pick up surface vibrations and turn them into an electrical current. I experimented with different ways in which the piezos can be used to generate sound. I also looked into the possibility of using them to generate electricity, creating a selfcontained product.

Pen Project.

Developing a set of three pens.

3D CAD, Solidworks – Crossbow.

Model of a reverse engineered crossbow.

Live project with Bowers & Wilkins to design two portable speakers.

Packable Speaker.

A speaker that is easily portable with a target market of young professionals and students.

Durable Speaker.

A speaker designed to survive harsh conditions. The target market is people who take part in extreme sports, and other out door pursuits.

How to get good quality sound from a flat speaker?

Electrostatic speakers consist of a thin flat diaphragm sandwiched between two electrically conductive grids. These give out excellent mid to high tones, but lack in decent bass. Key insight – Most portable speakers are hard to pack due to their shape. A flat speaker would fit nicely into most bags and laptop cases and tessellate with books making it ideal for young professionals and students.

The Bass and low-end tones will come from using Gel Audio Technology, this transfers the bass vibrations into whatever surface the speaker is sitting on, thus turning the surface into the bass speaker.

Pack

Packable.

Stackable.

Key insight – Most rucksacks have pouches in one form or another for water bottles. If the speaker were designed to be circular, it would fit nicely into these pouches.

Shockproof.

Waterproof.

On/off button and the volume controls are on top of the speaker.

The cover is held on with a friction fit, simply pull to remove.

Both the cover and the speaker itself are washable.
