Welcome to Oliver On behalf of our residents, we extend you a warm welcome and invite you to come and experience all that Oliver has to offer. Oliver is a quaint community dedicated to the preservation of our agriculture. Along with almost half of B.C.’s vineyard acreage, our 400 plus farms also produce world class fruits and vegetables. Viticulture and agriculture is our primary industry supporting our approximately 9,000 residents. With this appreciation of the land, comes the love of our surrounding environment. Oliver is a nature-lover’s paradise with great hiking trails, bird-watching sanctuaries and fantastic fishing spots. We are also home to many festivals and events including two world famous events, The Half Corked Marathon and Festival of the Grape. Whether your interests include wine tasting or hiking, Oliver offers the best of the South Okanagan. Come for the wine but stay for the experience!

We’ve got lots of them. From running to wine-ing to arts and culture, there’s always something happening in the Wine Capital of Canada. Break a sweat: Road races, marathons, endurance events. From beginner to pro, you can work up a sweat at a triathlon, or take part in the 2017 Canadian Event of the Year, the Half Corked Marathon. Contestants run from winery to winery, glass in hand for 18km with more than 40 wineries involved. Too easy? Sign up for the Freak’N’Farmer Adventure Race... good luck! In the winter get your ski legs going at the First Chair Festival at Baldy Mountain Resort. Grab a glass and a fork: Seasonal wine festivals have a cornucopia of wine pairing dinners and experiences. Spring time brings the annual Pig Out where you can high five a chef and wander from picnic table to hay bale and try some BBQ paired with local wines. In the fall is the Festival of the Grape, a family friendly event now over 20 years old. Over 50 wineries to sample from and a medley of vendors with food and wares all in one place. Enjoy the music played on the grandstand, and either compete in, or watch competitors in the Grape Stomp. Not into wine? Check out the Oliver Cask and Keg Festival, focused on celebrating the creations from local distilleries, breweries and cideries. These are all part of the Wine Capital Festival Weekend. Get creative: Throughout the year our artists and artisans showcase their talents. Spring time brings the Wine Capital Artwalk, pairing art with wine in our downtown businesses. In the summer, take in an outdoor concert at a winery or at Music in the Park every week along with the Art/ Vendor market. Perhaps attend an outdoor movie night with the family, you might even catch the Perseid Meteor Shower. Curious about Oliver’s heritage? Check out the Oliver Roots & Fruits Expo, celebrating our Heritage and Agriculture, part of the Sunshine Festival. Fall brings the annual Art Show and Sale with over 100 entries of visual art. For dates and details on these and other events visit winecapitalofcanada.com.

Blessed by the Sun

| Wine Capital of Canada

Oliver has over 35 wineries, with vineyards producing almost half of all the wine grapes in British Columbia. Over twelve million bottles of wine are made annually in Oliver, more than any other location in Canada. If that is not enough to make us the Wine Capital, we also have a Royal Proclamation from her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II saying so. When tradition meets innovation the extraordinary happens. By combining our perfect micro climate with the dedication of our grape growing farmers and adding a little magic from our winemakers the most spectacular wines are created. We produce big bold reds, fresh crisp whites, vibrant rosés, exciting sparklings and sweet icewines. The “Golden Mile” on the west bench is recognized as a distinctive viticultural area that is rich with glacial deposits formed from the

6

ice age. Wineries located on the “Black Sage” east bench have equally unique growing climates with deep sandy deposits. Winemakers assert that different soil conditions, known as terroir, have an identifiable impact on the flavour of the wines. Our selection of vintages, available directly from the wineries or local retail outlets, is second to none. Wineries of every type and size are willing to open their doors and let wine enthusiasts swirl and sip at their tasting bars throughout the year. Learn about the incomparable number of varietals we can grow as you taste through wines you may have never heard of. Unwind as you breathe in the array of aromas in each glass. Take a sip and let the nuances tickle your taste buds and palate with fresh and lively flavours. Come experience Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country where you can #uncorkthesun.

Wine and Dine

Here in the Wine Capital of Canada, our wines pair well with just about anything, from a romantic evening campfire to a five-course dinner at your new favourite restaurant to, of course, a few dishes at a winery bistro. Take a case or two home or join a wine club and have it sent back for you; savour a glass anytime and bring back the memories of wine touring and walking through row on row of densely twisted vines.

Whether it’s a gourmet meal prepared by a Red Seal chef, a midday break at the local bakery, or a visit to one of our markets for fresh produce and exotic spices, Oliver’s diversity of flavours tempt any palate. Stop at a roadside food truck for classic BBQ, or a pub for comfort food... yeah, there is a wine for that too.

Touring Tips 1. Grab a map and make a plan: Visit one or two of your favourite wineries and make sure to visit a few wineries you have never been to before. You might need a couple days, there is a lot to see. 2. Be scent free: Smell is a huge part of the tasting experience. Skip the perfume and cologne. Make sure your sun screen is scent free, nothing is worse than your wine tasting like bananas because the guy beside you just came from the beach. 3. Challenge yourself: Now is the time to try something new! The tasting bar is your chance to experiment and push your preconceptions of what you like. Only like reds? Try a rosé, we dare you. 4. Think food and water: Bring along a water bottle that you can refill. Make a lunch reservation at a winery restaurant or patio. Bring a picnic from home or grab some charcuterie from one of the wineries’ deli fridges. 5. Travel Safe, don’t over consume: Find a friend to be your designated driver or rent a bicycle. Better yet, get a group together and book a wine tour. Now you have a guide to share local secrets. It’s not rude to spit, but please use the spittoons.

A Vintage for every taste. | more to sip on

Oliver is proud to herald as the Wine Capital, but we’re more than that. Craft breweries offer unique local and seasonallyinspired flavours. Award-winning distilleries produce gin, vodka and whiskey some you can take home to age and customize in your own miniature barrel. Fresh fruit cider will perfectly quench your thirst on an Okanagan day. Craft beverage culture is budding in Oliver. Breweries get creative using wine barrels in their micro-brews. Distillers extract flavours from botanicals sourced nearby to produce unique spirits. Cideries are emerging and taking advantage of the abundance of sweet apples grown in the valley. Whatever your preferred libation, we’ve got a taste for you. Step one: plan your visit. Step two: designate a driver, better yet hire a tour company to shuttle you. Step three: drink it all in. The views are as a good as the first sip from your glass.

| Get Fresh with a Farmer

With more than 400 farms cultivating the land to grow fresh produce, agriculture has been at the heart of Oliver since town namesake Sir John Oliver brought irrigation in the early 1900s. Come and discover for yourself where your food originates before it arrives at your grocery store. Take a moment to sample delicious local products like jams and honey. Support farmers and agriculture by visiting our fruit stands and weekly farmer’s market where you can purchase a multitude of fresh fruits and vegetables. Few experiences in life are greater than a bite of fresh fruit, picked straight off the tree, still warm from the hot summer sun and bursting with juices of natural sweetness. From ground crops to fruit trees, farmers have tilled these soils for generations. This is where ‘freshly picked’ means knocking the dirt off a bunch of carrots from the farmers’ stand, or climbing a ladder in the u-pick cherry orchard.

18

Springtime brings weeks of blossoming trees, like a fragrant wave flowing through the valley. Starting in mid-April (cherries) and ending in early May (apples), Oliver orchards literally burst into life. Summer starts harvest time, beginning late in June and stretching well into October. See all we have to offer. Take a scenic drive or bike ride down a country road. Wave hello to farmers as you pass by them on their tractors. Take a deep breath of fresh air filled with the perfume of ripening fruit and blossoming flowers. Stand back and drink in the view, the landscape is a patchwork quilt of colours, with golden Bartlett pears, deep red Bing cherries and bright green Granny Smith apples stitched together by rows of vineyards. Enjoy the fruits of our labour.

Okanagan Gleaners

A true reflection of our bounty and our community spirit, Oliver is home to an organization that helps feed the less fortunate around the world. You can participate in this unique experience that brings together volunteers and is a one-of-a-kind experience. Gleaning is the collection of leftover crops after fields have been harvested, with a goal of reducing agricultural and food waste. Founded in the autumn of 1994, the Okanagan Gleaners produce dried soup-mix consisting of a plethora of produce. Housed in a converted 1920s tobacco-drying barn and now transformed into a food processing facility. The Gleaners have shipped and distributed more than 45 million servings around the globe since 1996 to those in need – averaging 6 million servings annually.

Rhoda Brookes

Surrounded by farms and orchards volunteers gather produce that doesn’t make the grade for store shelves, then work together in a coordinated production line to sort, chop, and peel, often outside in the Oliver sunshine with newfound friends. Some “voluntourists” come each year to help, and can sometimes grab a camping spot to be close to the action. okanagangleaners.ca

Choose your fancy Oliver offers something for every palate including those looking for more exotic tastes – East Indian, Greek, Mediterranean, Mexican and Asian can all be found quickly. Relax in the laid-back atmosphere of one of our pubs, bistros, cafés, lounges or restaurants all with a unique and personal atmosphere. From a casual lunch at a walk-up food truck to sitting down at a spectacular winery restaurant overlooking the vineyards you’ll find it all here in Oliver. Here embracing farm-to-table cuisine is a reality and often reflected in the seasonal selections at the local eateries. With an abundance of fresh local produce, find asparagus and berries on spring menus, then tomatoes, peppers and tree fruits throughout summer, with autumn harvest bringing a variety of squash, root vegetables and apples. As summer comes into peak, Okanagan salmon return to their home

waters and it isn’t unusual to see this seasonal favourite appear on the menu. Our area chefs are delighted to be part of the process, where they can tend vegetables in their own garden to drive sustainable experiences.

Make the most of your time in Oliver by sampling as much as you can. Take advantage of the markets and artisan bakers to create your own unique culinary experience to enjoy at one of the parks or licensed winery patios. Of course, no day is complete without a sweet treat – visit the local bakery for a cream puff, stop at a coffee shop for gateau or gelato, or a roadside fruit stand for tree-ripened sweetness. After a day on the slopes, cross country skiing or curling, finish with a warming meal of hearty soup, meat pie, or steak at one of the great restaurants washed down with a pint of local brew.

Birding and Wildlife Viewing The unique ecological system surrounding Oliver, including the White Lake Grasslands and Vaseux Lake, makes us a world-renowned birding location. These habitats support important species such as the Wester Screech Owl, Yellow-Breasted Chat, Sage Thrashers and White-Headed Woodpecker as well as the endangered Lewis’s Woodpecker. Other birds that are often sighted in the area include Trumpeter Swans, Western Meadowlarks, Golden Eagles, Canada Geese and Calliope Hummingbirds (the smallest hummingbirds in Canada). In addition to being a provincial park, Vaseux Lake is home to the Vaseux-Bighorn National Wildlife Area, rated by Nature Canada as one of the 4 must-see reserves in the country. The primary large animal here is the California Bighorn Sheep that can Rod be viewed regularly on the rocky slopes among Malcolm the arid grasslands. There are species of flora and fauna in the ‘pocket desert’ of the South Okanagan that cannot be found elsewhere in Canada. The biodiversity of the region provides a haven for any nature lover, birder, weekendenthusiast or family looking for an educational and authentic experience.

When the heat is too much, remember our lakes! Tuc-El-Nuit, with its public beach, can be found right in town. Vaseux Lake to the north is great for paddling and exploring its bays and wetlands. Green lake is a brilliant turquoise colour and a popular place to float away the afternoon. Osoyoos Lake to the south is 19kms long (5km in Washington State) perfect for wake boarding and water skiing.

Gone fishing Fishing enthusiasts will find great opportunities in and around Oliver with abundant trout and bass populations; in fact the South Okanagan has one of the best bass fisheries in Western Canada. Ripley, Madden and Burnell (Sawmill) Lakes are stocked with trout and ready for your rod and real. Vaseux and Osoyoos lake have a great mix of fish and is where you will find those record sized bass. Spring, summer and fall anglers of all levels enjoy easy access to many waters with real opportunities for trophy size fish. Anglers can expect an exciting day fishing by boat or right off shore.

Our Cultural Mosaic

Oliver is composed of many different cultures. The Sylix (Okanagan) First Nation have the longest history here. The Osoyoos Indian Band is an important part of the patchwork that makes up our community. They and many long term families have strong roots set all the way back to pioneer and gold rush days. Agriculture became, and continues to be, the main industry of the area. Over the years many different cultures have immigrated here bringing their expertise in farming with them. Portuguese, East Asian, and Latin American traditions are all woven into the fabric of our community.

Asymetriq Productions

Over the years the traditions of all these cultures have influenced the art, cuisine and entertainment of the area creating the unique cultural mosaic that is Oliver BC.

Before there was Oliver there was the city of Fairview, a boom-and-bust community from Gold Rush times. Explore the original town site just west of Oliver, or visit the actual jail beside the Museum and see how they used to do things in the gold rush days – don’t worry, it’s not used for anything now but photo-ops and tall tales. Oliver’s history is intricately tied to the days of six shooters and dreams of striking it rich, even if those days didn’t last very long. The museum offers a snapshot of earlier days, and is entirely run by volunteers so there’s likely a good story or two waiting for you. Oliver is said to be born of the water. BC Premier John Oliver (who the town of Oliver is named after) spearheaded the build of the irrigation canal in 1919 bringing water to new farm lands. The irrigation canal made this dry desert landscape the perfect place for growing cantaloupe, other Oliver & District ground crops and tree fruits. Before Heritage Society being known as the Wine Capital of Canada, Oliver was the Cantaloupe Capital. For more information visit the museum and archives or www.oliverheritage.ca

Oliver, connected by trains The Oliver Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) Station operated from 1923 to 1977. The Kettle Valley Railway (KVR) was given federal charter in 1901 and was leased by the CPR for 999 years in 1913. The rail line was built by the CPR to connect its mainline with the Kootenays by a direct route along the southern border of BC. The line in Oliver was laid in 1922. Allen Jones

• 1921- 1923 - Construction of the Oliver CPR station.

October 31, 1934 – Oliver’s station was no longer seasonal. Up until then the station was open only during the summer.

July 5, 1977 - Last train through Oliver (the tracks between Okanagan Falls and Osoyoos were closed).

1979 - Tracks were pulled up and CPR station closed.

1982 - Station moved 200 yards to its present location.

Sept 19, 1988 - Fire partially destroyed the CPR station and nearby boxcar which was in the process of being restored.

May 29, 2002 - The Town of Oliver repaired and refurbished the existing CPR station that was previously damaged by fire.

Current - The Oliver CPR station is home to the Oliver Visitor Centre. Come by for a visit!

Then and Now

First Nations

The Okanagan People

The Syilx (Okanagan) First Nations people have been in the Oliver region for thousands of years, and their culture and influence on the region are a critical part of the area’s history, and its future. Steeped in the bounty of the land and water, the First Nations depended upon and protected the rich agricultural resources in the South Okanagan, depending on nature to provide for their community, from food to medicine to shelter. This living history can be seen in the salmon run that takes place every year, increasing in recent seasons as the Okanagan River is restored.

Leila Kwok Photography

While exploring Oliver and the surrounding area, take time to read about the continuing influence of the First Nations culture at interpretive signs, in our public art, art galleries, and museums.

Still not tired? Grab your kayak or paddle board and challenge the lake to a race.

Golf | in the Stunning Desert The South Okanagan is a mecca for golfers of all skill levels. The South Okanagan, a fantastic golf corridor stretching from Osoyoos to Summerland. Boasting one of Canada’s longest golf seasons, the South Okanagan features 12 courses of varying difficulty. Six championship, three executive and three par three courses can be reached in under an hour’s drive from Oliver.

Whether you are a seasoned golfer or new to the sport, everyone is looking to lower that handicap. Perfect your golf swing with a few lessons from one of the many golf pros or simply work things out with a bucket of balls at one of the driving ranges. Standing at the tee box you might find it hard to keep your eye on the ball while being distracted by the stunning views. It’s OK - enjoy! Surrounded by vineyards, nestled into the mountainside or standing in a green oasis in the desert, everywhere you look there is a breathtaking vista. From the fairview to the fare of the clubhouse - now that you have played that perfect game (or stopped keeping score) - a great way to unwind is by sipping a local wine or microbrew. Enjoy a delicious lunch or dinner with the rest of your golf party to discuss the day’s game.

Snow Seekers - Chris Wheele

Above the clouds

| Come on up for a visit!

In winter the landscape becomes tranquil around Oliver…but it merely covers layers of activity beneath it. Truly, a winter visit to Oliver must include a day or two at Baldy Mountain Resort, the nearby ski hill that is perfect for families and snow buffs. Baldy is set on a vast and rugged landscape of hills and grasslands that invite hiking, mountain biking, and wildlife viewing if you’re not into winter sports and visit during another season. But it shines in winter. Rent your equipment, sign up for ski school, and hit the slopes. They even have ski and snowboard camps for the whole family. Other suggestions in the area - Nordic Skiing groomed trails, snowshoeing, ice fishing, snowmobiling and winter camping. The Mckinney Nordic Ski Club is a nonprofit volunteer organization. The ski area is located 27km from Oliver and 8km from Mt. Baldy. The 11 km of novice and intermediate ski trails are groomed and track set for both classic and skating. There are also several km of snowshoe trails. The trails are open to the public year round by donation and there are three shelters and outdoor toilets conveniently located throughout the area.

Why fly south when Oliver and the surrounding area offers a recreational paradise, sunny skies - most of the year - and a wealth of things to do, tastes to try, and culture to experience during the cooler days of the year?

Oliver Parks & Rec

Ice fishing, a freezing frenzy Cold enough for you? Grab a thermos full of java from a local coffee shop, your favourite tackle, and wait for the big one to come along. Wave a friendly hello to your fellow ice-fishers on Ripley or Vaseux Lake. Take your skates and stick out for a game on natural ice, when it’s safe to venture out.

Warm up inside More to do

The cool silence of winter is broken by the sounds of a concert or play down the street, friends gathered at an art show or a local theatre - the Frank Venables Theatre is a gem with artistic performances and special events. Troupes of actors walking the planks of the stage make for a perfect entertaining end to a winter’s day of exploration.

Winter, Outdoor & In

Why Fly South?

Warm up after a day outside with dinner and a show,The South Okanagan Concert Series perhaps. Explore galleries and historical sites, take in films at our classic, “retro” movie theatre, or learn something new, like Crokinole. Stay active at the community centre with a yoga class, or test your strength in the weight room. Take up badminton or figure out what exactly pickle ball really is. In the arena it may be cool but you will keep warm when you rediscover skating or take part in a game of drop-in hockey. Join our enthusiastic local curlers in a chorus of “Hurry Hard”.
