Malama Learning Center
Idea The Malama Learning Center is a symbolic shield providing an unique environment to conserve and display the native hawaiian fauna, a coexistance of nature and an urban community. Community The building is creating a new urban center for the school and the community. With no direction the round formal shape provides an equal approach from all sides. The combination of a creative village, a park and a nature preserve institution will create a very attractive meeting point. Building The very heart of the institution is the native hawaiian garden, surrounded by the lobby. Discreet zones connecting to the main lobby and the exhibition area are displaying the great variety of activities located in this building. The Building is blending the borders of interior and exterior space creating a very open floorplan. Roofgarden The area inherited by the buliding is recreated as a roofgarden which softly blends into the organicaly shaped site and the soft hills of the hawaiin landscape. The hawaiin native garden and the lobby are located at the center of this park. The elevated height will create panoramic views over the island and its nature preserves, inviting people to rest, read and relax. Nature theater The Amphitheater is also located in this roofgarden creating a open nature theater. While watching plays, lectures, graduation ceremonies, etc. you can enjoy the panoramic views of the hawaiian landscape. Nature conservatory This zone of the building is open to the environment, filtering shade, sun and elements as needed. Materials The building and its organically form is build with natural construction materials. Climate control The unique shape of the roof provides a naturally climate control by realeasing the warm air at the highest points. The ventury effect (wind blowing over a wing) is creating an underpressure on the top of the roof which will also be used to ventilate the building.
