STAR WARS:
THE FORCE AWAKENS
The biggest film of the year is about to take you by storm. 2015 is going to be the year of Star Wars with the franchise making a triumphant return to cinemas at the hands of JJ Abrams.
S
tar Wars certainly know how to go big. The Star Wars Celebration weekend 2015, hosted at the Anaheim Convention Centre, was as big and as electric as can be expected from an exclusive event hosted by Disney surrounding one thing and one thing only, a celebration of all things Star Wars.
Many fans gathered around the Anaheim, some camping overnight to be the first in line for the conference and included live panels. Around the world Star Wars fans sat in front of computer screens waiting for the event to be simultaneously live cast across the world via YouTube. The conference centre held host to thousands of fans
as well as various companies, including LEGO and Hot Toys, showcasing their Star Wars products, some of them exclusive to the event. However the biggest, most sort after event for fans around the convention was the live panel featuring JJ Abrams, director/ producer and co-writer on the new Star Wars film. Sure enough the hall was packed as Abrams
took to the stage with Kathleen Kennedy, executive producer and person in charge of Lucasfilm, showcasing an appropriate Star Wars exclusive t-shirt for the event, began to disucss the film. Throughout the panel Abrams could do no wrong in the eyes of the admiring fans in the audience. This was made abundantly clear when he broached the subject of practical effects, the lack of
Daisy Ridley, stars in her first major role, portraying Rey in the upcoming film

which and the excessive CGI, ruined the Prequel Saga in most fans eyes. Abrams is famed for his use of practical effects, something that has given him great praise after taking the helm for the new Star Wars. Throughout the principal photography of the film Abrams released several teaser videos from the set of the film, showing physical aliens as well as a new X-Wing. Whilst talking about shooting in Abu Dhabi, the set for new planet, Jakku, Abrams said that “Star Wars is as much a Western and a fairy tale as anything else, and one of the things you expect and want to see are real, tangible, John Ford landscapes. With this the crow erupted with applause, passion and a need for this film to be good is huge, the fans need it to be more than anything. However no one expected that the loveable robot, BB8, from the first trailer

would be one of the physical effects used in the film, Abrams himself even admits it would have been easier to use CGI. Powered by Sphero, BB8 fast became a highlight of the event, as fans erupted with applause to the circular droid taking to the stage with beloved droid R2-D2. Soon after the room explodes with the introduction of the cast Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Anthony Daniels, new additions to the cast Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, escorted by a troop of newly designed Stormtroopers. The feeling in the room is nothing short of electric with something more special and deep, expressed by Hamill as he says “All through my adult life I’ve felt such love from you, and you’re more than just fans, you’re family.” Next comes the biggest moment of all, a moment that has collected 53,523,545 views on YouTube, that of cause is the new Force Awakens trailer. During the screening the crowd is scarily quiet for the first time during the panel, watching as Abrams previews a trailer that not only blows away the fans at the convention, but the fans all around the world. We are treated to montage of entising, interetsing and beautiful shots inlcuding starting out with a re-recorded version of Mark
Hamill’s speech to Leia in Return of the Jedi, we see a lightsaber change hands, presumably Luke placing his hand on R2-D2 next to a fire as well as scenes starring apparent new Stormtrooper John Boyega, as well as the Millennium Falcon being chased through an old Imperial Star Fighter exhaust. We also see several new shots of Sith Lord, Kylo Ren, an apparent reformed Empire and a rather glamourous looking chrome trooper, Captain Phasma, played by Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie In classic JJ style he leaves the best till last with a tease that is bound to set the Star Wars community alight. The screen goes to black as we hear a familiar voice, the voice of Han Solo saying “Chewie, we’re home” as the screen once again lights up with the image of an in character shot of Harrison Ford, and the huge Mayhew in the full Chewbacca costume. The trailer ends and we are left wanting more, a wait that will last all the way to Christmas. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is in cinemas 18th December 2015.
The most ominous, glam looking Stormtrooper to date, Captain Phasma, is played by Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie.
