WELCOME I hope summer provided you with the opportunity to relax, unwind and enjoy memorable adventures with family and friends. I enjoyed a summer of family travel and surfing in California. With autumn upon us, we embrace the change of seasons with a fresh perspective and bountiful expectations. Albert Camus so poignantly said: “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” The colors of fall, the crispness in the air and the aroma of logs on a fire beckon introspection and renewal. Growing up in California, I have always been most intrigued by the beach in fall, when the crowds have dispersed and nature in its purest form allows the imagination to wander. We photographed our fall 2015 fashion story on Jekyll Island, Georgia. One of the region’s barrier islands, the topography features spectacular lush dunes and sculptural driftwood formations carved by nature that punctuate the pristine beaches. The location provided a dramatic canvas to showcase the compelling and imaginative fall collections available at Buckhead Atlanta. This issue of Buckhead Atlanta Magazine also includes a Q & A with Stacey Bendet, the tourde-force behind the Alice + Olivia brand. We invite you to see the Warby Parker phenomenon through the eyes of CEO and co-founder Neil Blumenthal, and to savor what’s cooking with executive chef Paoli Dorigato of Dolce Italian. Southern Debut Beloved fashion label Alice + Olivia grows its presence with a gorgeous new shop at Buckhead Atlanta Stacey Bendet has an eye for details — and discrepancies. “I love how women in the South love to dress up,” says the co-founder of contemporary fashion brand Alice + Olivia. “There is an etiquette to dressing there that is sometimes lost in the casual world of Los Angeles, and overpowered by the color black in New York. Southern girls love color, and so do I.” It was this shared passion for the vibrant and whimsical that inspired Bendet to make her official Southern debut with the opening of Alice + Olivia at Buckhead Atlanta. The Buckhead Atlanta retail location of the label marks the first time Alice + Olivia has had a standalone presence in Georgia. And it has been quite the addition to the neighborhood. With 1,500 square feet of space, signature black-and-white checkered floors, a glass-tiled wall and French white oak trim details, Alice + Olivia offers an almost gallery-like experience, with shoppers walking through a wonderland of beautifully made things that have been perfectly curated. of Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet, stated “We are excited to open our first retail location in Buckhead, Atlanta. The Atlanta customer is fashion focused, she loves fun and is not afraid to take risks. We see a growing demand in this market and look forward to bringing Alice + Olivia to such a dynamic community.” Alice + Olivia has boutiques in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Hong Kong, Dubai and a handful of other major cities. That international presence is no small feat for a designer who broke into the industry in 2001 with no formal design training or prior experience in fashion. While building flash websites for various startup clothing brands, Bendet approached a patternmaker for one of the companies she worked with and asked for help making a pair of pants. There was plenty of denim and no shortage of dress pants designed with the corporate office in mind, but Bendet was looking for something more sophisticated. Using her intuition and appreciation for great fit — “low rise, higher rise, bell bottom or skinny, the most

flattering fit depends on a woman’s shape regardless of trend,” she says — the University of Pennsylvania graduate designed a pair of slim-fitting, impeccably tailored black trousers. People began stopping her on the streets immediately, and a year later, Bendet and a college friend officially launched Alice + Olivia, named after their mothers. “My mom had the most amazing style,” Bendet says. “When I first started the line, our original Olivia pants were inspired by gorgeous photos of her in sexy 1970s bell bottoms.” Some 13 years later, the hippie-chic era of fashion is inspiring her again, this time in Alice + Olivia’s latest collection. “The fall collection was inspired by the early 70s — the glamour days of Biba, The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main St., Loulou de la Falaise, rock and roll, bohemian,” says Bendet, who is known for her bold and standout style. “I am loving bell bottoms again.” buckhead-atl.com


For autumn, shoppers can find jackets, floor-length gowns, as well as shorter shifts adorned with intricate beading and textured prints, and in fabrics ranging from glamorous fur to elegant silk. Bendet’s go-to piece for the season is any one of the long, embroidered and tapestry vests that are part of the fall collection, a choice inspired by her pregnancy; she’s expecting her third daughter with husband Eric Eisner this month. “I am so pregnant I can’t possibly consider something that contains spandex and have anyone take it seriously,” she says with a laugh. “So I’m very into long vests right now.”

resemble works of art, which is no surprise given Bendet’s long and deep love of it. “Art is a constant source of inspiration for me,” she says. The designer is currently taken with Italian contemporary artist Francesco Clemente (“his Tree of Life painting hangs next to my bed, and his use of color is art in its own right”) and Swiss mixed-media artist Ugo Rondinone (“he’s doing an amazing installation of rainbow rock sculptures in Nevada this fall — I can just see them turning into dresses”). In the past, she’s collaborated with painter and filmmaker Lola Schnabel and painter and sculptor Domingo Zapata.

ranging from red carpet premieres, award shows, to official overseas visits by Michelle Obama. In March, the First Lady wore a colorful, geometric tank and skirt to promote her education initiative “Let Girls Learn” in Cambodia. “It was such a proud and iconic moment for me to dress Michelle Obama,” she says. But Bendet is equally thrilled to dress the everyday woman, and more than decade after launching her brand, those everyday women continue to inform her collections. “The Alice + Olivia woman is every woman,” she likes to say. “Well — minus the women who don’t like to sparkle, shine, or wear things that are pretty.” Feifei Sun

ix short years ago, stylish, solidly made, affordable eyeglasses seemed like a pipe dream.

Now, it’s a widespread reality, thanks to the vision of Warby Parker founders Neil Blumenthal and Dave Gilboa. The brand, originally conceived as an internet sensation, is now close-to-home for Atlantans, with its just-opened retail outpost in Buckhead Atlanta. Upon entering, shoppers are immersed in the company’s classically cool style, with hundreds of frame styles lining the walls, plush tufted leather banquettes, dark woodwork and original art by New York-based artist Wayne Pate. Here, Blumenthal shares how the designer brand with a social mission got its start, why the newest location is a perfect fit for Atlanta and his thoughts on must-have spectacle styles. SEEING IS BELIEVING Style Meets Savvy at WARBY PARKER

How were you inspired to create Warby Parker?

What’s unique about the Warby Parker model?

It was born out of Dave’s and my personal experience. We were in graduate school [at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School] and the week before classes started, Dave purchased a pair of $700 glasses and left them in the pocket of an airplane. As a broke college student, he didn’t have the funds to replace them. We always wondered why glasses weren’t sold online, much like other apparel and accessories. And I’d been working at VisionSpring, connecting people in the developing world with the glasses they needed. So, we started talking and wondered why we didn’t just design glasses that we like and sell them for $95 instead of $500. The light bulbs went off and we launched in February of 2010. After features in Vogue and GQ, the company took off like a rocket ship.

We started selling a product online that had never really been sold in that space before. We ship you five frames at no cost and you have five days to try them on before making your selection. And, one of the things we’re most proud of is that we partner with organizations to train men and women in the developing world — where people live on less than $4 per day— to give basic eye exams and sell affordable glasses to those in their communities.

What is your favorite style? I’m partial to a bold, angular frame. I also love long, rounder brow line, like our Piper frame — with almost like a cat eye to it. I love it in the tortoise, though not for me [it’s a women’s frame]. buckhead-atl.com


Who are some great fashion icons for eyewear? Michael Kane, Steve McQueen and Jack Kerouac (whose journal characters, Warby Pepper and Zagg Parker, inspired the brand’s name).

How many frames should one have? Some people have a certain type of style that they love, so they’ll have multiple pairs only in that style. Then there are others who view eyewear as the ultimate accessory. They believe they should have as many pairs of glasses as they have shoes or handbags. That’s part of the Warby Parker value proposition; you can have many pairs and really make a style statement.

What colors are trending? Red is really trending for fall, and the color palate around tortoise shell is also a big trend.

The construction of Warby Parker glasses is terrific, particularly for the value. How do you achieve that? We use custom, single-sheet cellulose acetate and Japanese titanium in our frames and generally use five-barrel hinges, so the components are really premium. That not only enables us to provide a level of richness in color but also a level of durability that’s rarely found in other frames.

The Buckhead Atlanta store is the first Warby Parker store in the Southeast. What makes the development a great fit for a Warby Parker? We love Buckhead and the walkability of that part of town. And in this development, particularly, we love the other retail, bars and restaurants, and even the library across the street.

Many people associate Warby Parker with online. How are the brick and mortar stores a natural continuation of the vision of making shopping easy? When you walk in, you get a feel for the brand in the physical setting, which you can’t get online. So, when you go into the store, it feels like a classic library — inspired by the NYC public library. We try to communicate the brand story throughout the store, with book shelves stocked with classic literature and our favorite books. We have reference desks, which are a homage to the library, and we have a photo booth that people can have fun with. Of course, shopping is easy. You can walk away with sunglasses right away. Prescription glasses are custom, made to order, so people can have them shipped to their homes or to the store.

What role does technology play in the store? Our stores are packed with technology. Instead of a “point of sale” system — you won’t find traditional cash registers in our stores — we have the “point of everything” systems or “POE,” a nod to another writer, Edgar Allen Poe. Each associate has an iPad, so that, if you’re ready to buy they can take care of the transaction on the spot. Alternatively, if you want to consider your options further or want to have your personal stylist take a look at the frames you like, the store associates can snap photos of you in a few different frames and email them. We make it really easy, and technology helps make that possible.

When someone comes in to shop in the Atlanta store, what can they expect? Our associates are trained to help you select the best frames for you that will give you great comfort and a sense of style. People tend to start off by thinking of what shape they’re looking for and what they like. The associates look at how wide someone’s face is and that helps us narrow down the selections. hey didn’t make it this way. They came because it is this way. The Buckhead district has long been a magnetic force for companies, the culinary arts and affluent boutiques. The avenues and streets have welcomed an epicenter of trade and high-rises rippling out toward rolling hills and historic mansions. Be it the spirit or the commerce, people swarm around the densely populated hive. Something in the air, the tide, the shift has been bringing companies to this culturally rich home of Georgia industry, and Gary Friedman, CEO of Restoration Hardware, and Dene Oliver, CEO of OliverMcMillan, felt it. With all the construction, you can draw natural alliances between the old Buckhead and the new, the people who preserve its history and those who erect its legacy. There’s an invisible tightrope connecting the narrow turning lanes and windy suburban cut-throughs — the threads 44 | BUCKHEAD ATL ANTA

unified over Peachtree Street, over a cup of coffee (Corso, of course). That connection builds off the longstanding markets, art galleries and iconic bars and draws the customer into Buckhead Atlanta, a mixed-used development with luxury retailers like Hermès, Dior and Helmut Lang, or across the way at Restoration Hardware — the largest retailer of Italian bedding, Belgian linen, Thai silk, crystal lighting, and high-quality solid wood indoor and outdoor furniture in the country, and possibly the world. Restoration Hardware prides itself on “disruptive innovation,” which Friedman says is “a culture that is willing to disrupt today’s reality to create tomorrow’s future.” A philosophy that helped bring the furniture company back from near-bankruptcy in 2001 to a current market value in excess of 3.5 billion. His main tenet is scaling taste. After decades of watching retailers with no taste expand

and retailers with exceptional taste unable to ascend, there emerged a perfect balance of quality and quantity — never compromising on either. It’s a philosophy akin to this neck of the woods, with manicured lawns and pressure washed sidewalks: scale up the upscale. “This level of design was only available behind the iron curtain of trade design centers and only accessible to interior designers or those with a resale license,” Friedman explains of his brand. “Atlanta’s RH Gallery at The Estate in Buckhead is being hailed as the most important new home store in our industry.” The excitement for such an impactful flagship store in this structural core north of Midtown is a point of pride for Oliver, as he too has invested in this Peachtree region. “I know Gary is an artist and a designer. [I love that he] inspires others to join him. He’s like a Pied Piper,” he says. The brilliance of RH’s Peachtree locale buckhead-atl.com

and OliverMcMillan’s urban atmosphere is that, scaffolding and city planning aside, what these two have managed to do is reinvigorate what has always been here: a soul. It was planned to feel this way. From the clusters of fuchsia petunias to the towering glass windows. All of it. The wood, the rock, the stone; they saw it. When these CEOs acted on a passion for space and the Buckhead skyline, one couldn’t help but feel the tilt in the landscape even before the ground had broken. It was not about creating a project, Oliver explains. It’s five blocks inside an existing area — tied to other blocks — “when Buckhead is functioning at its best, you can walk from one area to the next,” he says. It’s a redevelopment on a block-by-block effect made to have an emotional connection to people. To weave together the surrounding spaces to a seamless effect. And they feel it. buckhead-atl.com

What sets this governing territory apart is not the frame or the fuss, but white space. Territories between the sidewalks and awnings that give the spaces a richness. “Negative spaces between the buildings, landscape, the trees, it’s the glue that holds things together,” Oliver explains. White space — the very idea that branded Steve Jobs’ Apple empire, now repurposed into scaffolding and stone in lieu of Helvetica.

Scale up the upscale... Choices like these can make a career. They draw a line in the sand that dares you to cross if you’re willing to see what could be: opulence in an otherwise forgotten bar-hopping block or

ESPN zone. The line on which Friedman and Oliver stand together. Oliver tells me, “Every great city evolved from how people live. We developed grit and development where people gather. Ours has become a more urban-centric focus.” Ours meaning Buckhead Atlanta, his baby. And “the hardest project we’ve ever had to work on,” he shares with a laugh. “But I fell in love with this space and the neighborhood.” What motivated him to build — something he refers to as the “vibrance of the land” — is the draw of the natural space in Buckhead that has the promise of a legacy, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Friedman talks a lot about what’s next. So does Oliver. It’s the same rhetoric you’ve heard from Atlanta businessmen for generations. They talk vision. They talk transformation. They talk Buckhead. Depending on the unit’s location, residents may see downtown Atlanta, Stone Mountain or the King and Queen Chess buildings near the Perimeter when they step outside onto their terrace. Penthouse floors offer higher ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows in every room. “Making sure residents can take in these views of iconic Atlanta landmarks was important to us because Buckhead Atlanta is very much part of — and about — the community and we wanted our residents to feel that way too,” Gorman says. a touch taller than average, create even more breathing room in the cozy and comfortable living space. Monochromatic gray and beige palettes run throughout the apartments, and a creative use of color and patterns, such as a houndstooth wall print, create texture and visual appeal. In the dining area unexpected, avant-garde lighting decorations hang over a classic kitchen island. “We like to combine relaxed luxury with a playful and sophisticated spirit,” says Jules Wilson, owner of Jules Wilson ID, who created the interiors for The Residence.

Inside, residents and their guests can grab coffee or eat lunch at a farm-style kitchen table or watch a football game in the spacious drawing room with oversized couches. A theater room, complete with a 92-inch screen, plush benches and leather chairs, is available for reservation. Residents can also attend one of the monthly “Movie in the Mansion” events where admission is free and gourmet popcorn is served. There’s a fitness center with all the essentials — cardio machines, along with free weights — as well as a separate area that has a ballet barre.

“OliverMcMillan had a clear vision for what Buckhead could be and we are very pleased to have worked with them to turn that idea into a beautiful, memorable place.” “The space was designed to incorporate hoteltype facilities and amenities for a residential building,” Gorman says. “The compelling part of this is that we’re able to engage with the retailers and restaurants to create custom, crafted experiences.” To that end, Buckhead Atlanta recently introduced food service by the pool, with delivery from Buckhead Atlanta restaurants including Bilbo to Go (Le Bilboquet), and American Food and Beverage, allowing residents to sip on soda or enjoy lunch by the water. “We are working to add more restaurants to this service,” says Gorman. Summer might be over, but lucky for Buckhead residents, the warm days and nights are likely to continue well into the fall. And that’s just one more benefit of city living. Feifei Sun

A private club house called The Mansion is located on the eighth floor pool deck between the North and South Towers of The Residence, serving as a hub that connects the buildings and allows residents to mingle in a communal space. OliverMcMillan CEO Dene Oliver challenged the design team to create the club house with the look and feel of one of Buckhead’s great mansions. “We studied the neighborhood and took care to create the gracious feeling we experienced in Buckhead,” says Tim Kent, architect with Pappageorge Haymes of Chicago. “We focused on architectural correctness, with details including real working wood shutters, brickwork with the depth and character found in Southern architecture, a slate roof, copper detailing and a large front door entryway.” Mansion theater

“The rooms were designed to feel as if the club house was once someone’s home that has been converted for the use of all residents,” added Kent. Outside The Mansion, lush landscaping, double chaises and a large pool create the feeling of a luxury resort. The Mansion garden offers whimsy and comfort with a grand fireplace, elegant outdoor dining under flower filled pavilions and built-in barbecue grills. Acclaimed landscape architect Hoerr Schaudt created elegant outdoor rooms framed by garden walls and brick pathways to create intimate gathering spaces for residents. Buckhead Atlanta welcomes Paolo Dorigato’s DOLCE ITALIAN

In a day and age where it’s often the most obscure dish that gets the most buzz (did someone say caviar foam and veal powder?) there’s something exceedingly refreshing and comforting about eating simple food that is just plain good. Perhaps that explains how Dolce Italian snagged the title of Best New Restaurant on Bravo’s hit TV show of the same name. Chef Paolo Dorigato, corporate executive chef of LDV Hospitality and Dolce Italian, duked it out with 15 other restaurants around the country, and in the end, his classic plates of made-from-scratch pasta and heirloom tomato salads won out. And not just on the show — the award also resulted in an editorial feature in Bon Appétit, a featured spot at America’s number one global food festival, Vegas Uncork’d by Bon Appétit 2015 and $100,000. Not too shabby. “Being on Bravo’s Best New Restaurant was a great opportunity and experience that gave the restaurant tremendous exposure, though the show had moments of high intensity,” 52 | BUCKHEAD ATL ANTA

says Dorigato. “I personally was under a lot of pressure, more than on a regular night of service at the restaurant, because I really wanted to succeed and strived to be the best. I never thought we would win, as the other restaurants were all amazing with very talented owners, managers and chefs.” But win he did, and naturally, we couldn’t be more thrilled Dorigato brought the Dolce Italian concept to Buckhead Atlanta this past August, joining LDV sister spots Corso Coffee and forthcoming American Cut. Dorigato had a heavy task ahead of him, but his resume speaks for itself. The Trento, Italy native hails from Michelin-starred restaurants like Le Cirque and Osteria del Circo, and NYC hotpots like the Rainbow Room and Cipriani Wall Street. When Dorigato first joined LDV, he ran the kitchen at Atlantic City’s Azure at Revel Resorts, where he earned the title of one of New Jersey Monthly’s 2012 Best Restaurants. “When I first came to America, I didn’t think I could match the high-quality products we

had in Italy,” admits Dorigato. “And people’s approach to food here was so different, but so much has changed since then. Now I think you can get better Italian food in America than in Italy.” Nowhere is this more true than at Dorigato’s Dolce Italian in Buckhead Atlanta. “Given the focus on consistency and simplicity [at Dolce], all pastas are made fresh in house and we partner with local farms to ensure we receive the highest quality products.” So just what is Dolce Buckhead all about? For those who have dined at the Miami or Chicago locations, you’ll find the same level of warmth, elegance and service found there. “It’s a very intimate experience as our goal is to make people feel like they are at home enjoying their favorite dishes, but without having to clean up afterward.” Their stellar negronis and classic Aperol spritzes will help you cheers to that. straight forward with no surprises, focusing on quality and consistency,” says Dorigato, who strives to make Dolce the kind of neighborhood restaurant you can dine at several times a week. That means the food is approachable, healthy and affordable. Most plates are under $30, and those that go over are the large entrees. “If we want people to eat here three times a week, it has to make sense pricewise,” says Dorigato. “Also, most restaurants use excessive amounts of fat and I try to stay away from that kind of eating to provide a good, healthy meal with specials you’re able to eat every day. You cannot go to a steakhouse every night of the week, but here you

can come in one night for pasta, one night for pizza and another for a nice piece of fish.” When it comes to Dorigato’s cooking style, it’s all about using high-quality products and letting them shine. “We just take in-season products, don’t do too much to them and put them on the plate with minimal treatment,” explains Dorigato, citing his ravioli with eggplant, smoked mozzarella and cherry tomato sauce as proof. “Everything complements each other and it’s very direct, but the way we cook looks simpler than it is. Take our meatballs, for example — they’re simply served over polenta, but there’s a lot of care that goes into them. There’s the pork, the beef, the bread, the ricotta, the parmesan.” Dorigato’s also not one for fancy, overthe-top techniques. “There’s lots of ways to cook octopus now, and many chefs like using sous-vide machines, but we just cook it like they did in Italy 30 years ago — we poach it and let it chill in the cooking liquid,

served alongside a simple frisee salad with chickpeas and natural farro.” For a sweet finish, end with the decadent Tiramisu, a family recipe Dorigato brought with him from Italy. Dorigato has been temporarily living in Atlanta to help the team set up shop and master his menu, which has been adapted to the market. “I took time to get to know the people and suppliers of Atlanta. Talking to the farmers and gaining knowledge of their products helped me create the menu for Atlanta. And while we can expect this culinary superstar to drive the one-ofa-kind menu, it all comes down to the talented Buckhead Atlanta team to smoothly execute it on a day-to-day basis. Behind the Scenes: MEET OUR MODELS KATE Kate Grigoreva is a star in the making. Having entered the fashion world less than a year ago, Kate has already attracted the attention of many prominent fashion houses, stylists and photographers. After graduating college, Kate was a contestant on Russia’s Next Top Model, where she became runner-up. Shortly thereafter, she came to New York for her first show season.

Kate’s auspicious debut in opening the Donna Karan show was followed by countless appearances on the runway and in fashion editorials. In May 2015, Kate joined Victoria’s Secret’s roster of supermodel Angels.

TOM Tom Bull is a native of Australia. He calls Los Angeles and Perth home. While traveling for his modeling career, he once drove from New York to Florida, stopping in each state to swim. A surfer, and avid golfer, he reports that he loves the Georgia beaches for their warm water. He tries to golf whenever he can and enjoyed golf at Jekyll Island. Tom’s favorite memory of modeling so far is when he had the opportunity to do a video short with his mom and two brothers, based on a vignette from the television show Leave it to Beaver.

GRACIE Gracie Carvalho began her career at age 16 in her native Brazil. After being selected as a finalist in a modeling contest, she went to São Paulo where she began modeling full time for both runway and print. The international fashion capitols soon beckoned.

Although Gracie is now a New York resident, she is captivated by the energy of the beach and felt right at home on Jekyll Island. To unwind, Gracie practices Muay Thai, a form of Thai kick-boxing. A romantic Golden Isle getaway, rich in history and modern tranquility served as the perfect setting for our fall advertising campaign. We photographed on Jekyll Island — a lush environment with grand, moss-laden oak trees, white sandy beaches, majestic dunes, native wildlife and national landmarks. The majority of Jekyll Island will always remain, by law, untouched. The location’s natural beauty provided an inspiring canvas upon which we could convey the visual narrative of Buckhead Atlanta’s fall fashion story. Though mystifying thunderstorms greeted us when we arrived on the island at twilight, we were instantly charmed by our lodging at the captivating Jekyll Island Club Hotel. The following morning, under a crystal blue sky, we met our ad agency team, Rocco Laspata, Charles DeCaro and their crew, at Jekyll Island’s magnificent and surreal Driftwood Beach, a place befitting the extraordinary fashions collected from the best-in-class, luxury labels of Buckhead Atlanta. An inspiring beginning that set the mood for our shoot. Long and fulfilling days were spent capturing the moments that recount an autumn beach getaway. Tides and transcendental storms came and went. Cumulous clouds drifted in the distance and gentle breezes arrived as if on cue. All adding to our magical experience as we imagined ourselves returning for a tranquil retreat with our loved ones.

WHERE WE ATE: Courtyard at Crane Cottage The wonder we felt at Jekyll Island drifted into the evening hours as we gathered for an al fresco dinner at Courtyard at Crane Cottage within the grounds of Jekyll Island Club, overlooking the impressive views of the property’s lush garden display. The seafood-focused menu relies on fresh, local ingredients with European flair. We dined and talked into the evening hours, sharing things we had learned about the island.
