“VISIO NOX” “Visio Nox” translating to “Night Vision” in Latin, is a series of photography, illustrations and video that pays homage to the work of contemporary American artists Edward Hopper and John Register, as well as noir cinema, primarily 1982’s “Blade Runner”, and 1974’s “Chinatown”. “Visio Nox” will be pitched as a portfolio piece to showcase my visual style to future collaborators and employers.

Throughout their artistic works, Hopper and Register cultivated a signature art style that falls under the umbrella of “American Realism” (Berman, 2007). Their work often features familiar social settings, albeit with intriguing details that add ambiguity upon closer inspection. Edward Hopper, a Manhattan native, created the bulk of his work in the midst of The Great Depression and World War 2 swiftly after. His compositions often feature windows, sharp angles and characters with relational ambiguity,

exemplified in his most famous work “Nighthawks”, a scene of 3 people in an obscure New York Diner, surrounded by dark, empty streets. It’s become synonymous with the noir genre, with its retro-futuristic style and lighting serving as the design inspiration in the sci-fi epic “Blade Runner” (Bloom, 2017). John Register similarly depicts familiar urban settings with an empty, pervasive atmosphere, devoid of any people or activity, creating an sense of paranoia.

“Visio Nox” will be marketed throughout social channels to my established creative network, wider community and potential employers, with this signature project targeted to showcase my creative capabilities and influences. I aim to recreate the same feeling of ambiguity and mystery as the influencing works, using suburban settings combined with colorful lighting setups and strong shadows and angles to evoke a dreamlike effect.
