PHOTO LOMOGRAPY PICTURE BOOK

2010 FISHEYE

AND MORE OLIVER MILNE

What is Lomography? In the early 1990’s in Prague some students from Vienna, Austria, discovered a small enigmatic Russian camera, the Lomo Kompakt Automat, and started a new style of artistic experimental photography of unorthodox snapshots. There was a following of this style of photography and the original camera, the Lomo LC-A, which just blossomed into so much more. It is the youthful passion, light heartedness and creativity of those followers that is what Lomography stands for. In September 2006 the Lomo LC-A+ went on sale with its Multiple Exposure switch, enhanced ASA settings and groves to fit different kinds of accessories. Since then Lomography. com has been set up and loads of different cameras with interesting effects have been introduced. Some of these cameras being old classics no longer in productions as well as new creations such as the Supersampler and the Fisheye. But it doesn’t really matter too much about the cameras themselves, they’re just a point of inspiration. Lomography is really just an idea - just get out there and have fun with it.

To me Lomograpghy is taking pictures with a different way of thinking. Its less serious, its opportunistic, and its about experimentation and happy accidents. I try to capture interesting moments in interesting ways, and if there not interesting moments make them interesting in the way you take the picture. I’ve tried to adopt the some of the ten golden rules of Lomography. One I like is take your camera everywhere you go. I’ve been on a quite a few walks out in the country with mates and bring my camera along, and id much rather have my cheep Fisheye camera than my digital camera.

OLI’S FIVE MORE BETTER RULES OF LOMOGRAPHY 1. Take your camera anywhere. Make it a part of your life not an interference. 2. Seek out subjects you wish to capture. 3. Think about, and try out interesting effects. 4. Know your camera and what you can do with it. 5. Be ready for anything and be fast when and if something happens.

Approach the objects of your lomographic desire as close as possible 6.Don’t think (William Firebrace) 7.Be fast 8.You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film 9.Afterwards either 10.Don’t worry about any rules.

FISHEYE (fisheye2 35mm compact camera). I really like the fisheye camera because you pull so much more into one photo. I use my ‘Fisheye 2’ without its viewfinder because its cumbersome and annoying and frankly you don’t need it. Whatever you can see that’s about pretty much what its going to capture. I’ll just hold the camera in front of my face or rest it on something.

Wondering what this place could be?

Went out on a boat trip along the Ader. Set off with supplies from the dock in Arundal. We then set camp after sundown somewhere around Amberley tried to catch a fish with a crab hook and some sweet corn, but no joy. Awoke in a tent surrounded by cows.

At the time I only had a £500 digital SLR which I didn’t fancy taking on a snowboarding holiday. So my brother and I bought some disposable cameras. I didn’t mind carrying mine in my jacket while hurtling down a slope. I’m pretty sure I fell on it a couple of times, but it was fine.

The images that you get may not be as clear as what you would get from a digital camera, in terms of the quality and not as true to what your photographing. But there’s just something so much richer about film that makes it warmer and in some ways it feels more real.

The deep, muffled crunching that’s made as you glide through the untouched snow is one of the most enjoyable sounds.

Apparently they don’t want to encourage ball games at our college? And that’s why there’s only one goal post?

Experimenting with the Hanimex 53hs: We had this camera lying around. So I opened it up and modified it so you can re-cock the shutter without advancing the film, allowing multiple exposures. This was quite easy to do and I would recommend giving it a try if you also have a crappy old camera lying around.

I like to go out somewhere and take my camera whether its to the countryside or a night out. There’s an excitement about taking my fisheye. There’s a joy with all photography that there might be interesting subject or happening to capture. But on top of that its, having a camera and techniques that grant you the ability to make the most boring subjects interesting.

ACCIDENTS Not sure when I took these pics, it would have been a bit earlier than the others, maybe summer last year. What happened to make this effect was, when winding the film back the film tore in two. I went into a dark room (my bathroom) and removed the film. But as you can see here some light leaked in the side and created this.

When it comes to it actually getting your photos is quite exciting. You forget about what you’ve taken. Sometimes a lot of the pictures won’t come out so well but then you just get these select few of little interesting artworks.

Red 35mm 100-ISO Redscale Negative Film In The Nikon EM analog SLR.

Red Scale has actually been around for quite a while . The average 35mm colour negative film has a semi-transparent layer on the back, designed to keep stray light from getting onto the sensitive emulsion on the front. To get redscale film all that needs to be done is to load the film backwards inside the canister, and actually shoot through this protective layer. The result is close to shooting through a reddishorange filter. But unlike a filter, the effect is a bit unpredictable and varies in strength depending on the subject and light source.

Thanks again to Frank and Sam for their photos as well as a couple by Henry and a couple by polish waitresses. Thanks to friends as well for just being in the photos and in this book even though I did not ask you permission for either. I’ve made this book, I guess, as a gallery of my photos. They are not really serious though they’re fun. I am however seriously obsessed with ‘Lomography.’ I hope that you have found it interesting, and I hope that you will be inspired in analog photography. I’m always taking more photos and trying new effects, and new cameras. So hopefully I’ll be making another one of these photo books soon. If you liked this, then take a look at my Flickr page. I have these photos and more, in better quality. Thanks for reading and viewing Oli Milne
