Profession Experience

I’m a recent UK Masters graduate and junior designer looking for a position in the US where I am eligible to work through the Architect-US Professional Career Training Program that sponsors my J-1 visa, health insurance and takes care of all the paperwork as part of the U.S. Government Exchange J-1 Visitor Program. In terms of my work over the last few years I’ve been particularly interested in projects which think deeply about how they empower their users in the hope of creating rich community ecosystems. This is something I wish to develop and continue into my professional career, hence my interest in a role at your firm. I believe your practise to be one of the world leaders in this way of thinking as it’s able to utilise a wide network of global expertise and influence to really provide the tools to investigate ways of creating sustainable communities. Most recently I have been working at PARTI, a new and energetic firm in London which has a rich variety of projects both in the UK and abroad. Here I have gained some invaluable experience in managing small residential projects in their entirety whilst working in a larger team on the development of an innovative hotel resort in NSW Australia. In June I completed my MArch from the Bartlett School of Architecture in London where I received a Distinction in both design and written thesis. My final project focused on the delivery of housing in London, asking how a new female led mindset could shed light on the type of housing we’re building and how new communities are created. This was accompanied by a written thesis that investigated the relationship between history and memory within co-housing groups in the UK. Previous to this I completed my undergraduate at the University of Cambridge where I received first class honours for my work on place making strategies in London’s East End. I am currently employed in the UK but will be available to move after completing a four week notice period. This would also align with a J-1 visa being granted, which I believe would be the easiest way to gain working status in the US. Having said this, I am open to different visa options dependent on your firms needs and resources Please don’t hesitate to contact me on the detailed attached.

PARTI

Masterplanning the American River Resort, Kangeroo Island, NSW Australia Project for a 250 room, landscape hotel and harbour development set within a nature reserve on Kangaroo Island, Australia. The project looks to utilise innovative prefabricated construction methods and local sourced experience on the fauna and flora to create a mixed used and simple hotel design which embeds itself within the landscape. I was instrumental in the production of the planning application, compiling reports from a number of different consultants and managing the complex site strategy.

Detailed Room Design Kangeroo Island, NSW Australia Since November I have been managing a team of designers and engineers to develop the concept idea for the hotel rooms into a detailed rawing package. This design is now being developed into a 1:1 prototype being constructed in Shanghai and will be used to test the hotel’s primary structure as well as the etire interior fit out.

Design Development of the MicroHotel Kangeroo Island, NSW Australia Over the last 3 months I have been working on the design development for the first phase of the hotel, The Micro Hotel. This design is based around a series of four interconnected blocks that zig zag down the sloping topolography creating a family orientated accomodation.

Masterplanning and Design Development Madinat Al Irfan, Oman My role in the project had a number of faceted. Firstly, I managed the overall masterplan drawing, ensuring the main masterplan was updated and presented at key project milestones. As an urban designer I was tasked with the organisation of the city’s urban quarters, ensuring the flatter areas of the site where planned to hit the required number and distribution of business, resi and retail units. Later in the project we were tasked with describing the sense of place and scale in the city, at this point I led a team of assistants to curate a series of walks, exploring the texture and feel of the city at the scale of the person.

Public Realm Design Madinat Al Irfan, Oman Between my 4th and 5th year I returned to Allies and Morrison to continue work on the masterplan for Madinat Al Irfan. Here I led a design and drawing exercise to explore the different place making devices within the new city. These drawings looked to capture the qualities of the Urban Centre, the Wadi and a number of different bridges that connect the different areas of the city. These drawings were intrinsic to a presentation conducted with the Omani Government at the end of the summer.

Detailed Design and Site Assistant Girton Ash Court, Cambridge Assistant on the final stages of the detailed design and the site management of a new student accommodation block for Girton College Cambridge. The project was very sympathetic to the Victorian college building using a simple palette of natural materials to create a robust and elegant collection of bedrooms.

Outline Planning Application Girton College Masterplan, Cambridge After the success of Ash Court the college asked us to develop a masterplan vision to cover at least the next 25 years. Following a thorough internal consultation about its future, we worked very closely with the College to prepare a considered, long term strategy to make the most of their unique site culminating in an outline planning application for new development in the Green Belt. I was instrumental in the production of all drawings and models and organising a series of highly successful consultation exercises.

MArch Y2 Thesis Project The Newnham Coopertive, London The Newham Cooperative establishes a new female led method of delivering homes in London, one where the decisions are placed into the hands of the residents and communities are created through the act of making. This project responds directly to the city’s current housing crisis by creating more democratic communities where homes meet the needs of the residents and affordability is established in perpetuity. The project was completed as part of my final year at the Bartlett School of Architecture where it was nominated for the UCL Urbanism Prize and achieved one of the highest design marks in the year.

The Localised Block The development looks to create a city within each block, housing a mix of work, play and living typologies. This responded to research on how women use the city, creating complex urban networks that criss cross between the urban and the local, utilising a rage of public facilities and transport.

The Young Persons Commune The young persons commune looks to shift the relationship between shared space and private space is the home on it’s head. Where private spaces is minimised to the smallest possible size and shared space is offered is abundance, meaning all aspects of live in the house are shared, from cooking, washing, working and gardening.

New Typologies for Work and Play In questioning the role of women and the city the cooperative looks to explore a range of new typologies that start to mix work, play and education by focusing on flexible childcare options helping to ease the growing financial burden on families. (from left to right) 1 Explores the idea of a nursery that uses the city as it’s classroom, utilising new cycle paths to safely connect the children to a series of educational landscapes and institutions, 2 Tests the idea of a shared office, where work spaces for both children and adults are created in a domestic setting. 3 Combines play areas and hot-desking allowing parents to work from home more successfully. 4 Homework and study clubs which children can use between the end of school and their parents return from work.

Contextualised Learning on the Thames

MArch Y1 Design Project Contextualised Learning on the Thames, London Stemming from a need to shake up the way education is currently provided to Generation Z, ‘Contextualised Learning on the Thames’ looks to provide a new educational experience that breaks out of the classroom and engages with real, lived experiences. Free from a prescribed syllabus, the questioning of a more traditional approach allows the project to use, London and the Thames, as its extended classroom promoting learning through creative exploration, collaboration and conversation.

Contextualised Learning on the Thames

A Water Based Educational Landscape The network of floating structures not only provides new spaces for the city’s younger generation but also tries to reignite the wider civic connection to the River. The Thames is London’s largest open space that can now be utilised to house vast areas of new public space and community owned institutions. These will focus on community built structures that embody the needs and culture of a given district. This in turn allows the River to become a vast buffer zone that transcends formal geographic connections and starts to bridge the widening social and economic disparity in today’s city. Two scenarios are imagined for the projects future development where the network comes together for specific events, creating new pieces of city. Woolwich 2020 is taken as an example when the Woolwich Passenger Ferry, which connects the north and south bank, is decommissioned. The workshops alongside new public infrastructure lost during the areas rapid development is re constructed on the water providing new aquatic sports facilities and public gardens creating a temporary bridge reconnecting Woolwich with the King George Docks.

Live Research Projects

Empowering Generation Z Live Research Project Conducted in Collaboration with Vertias University 2014, Costa Rica The project was based around the construction of two 1:1 structures which were built in collaboration with the students at vertias university and the local school. Here we looked at how we could create spaces for the school, working with them to enhance their playground.

The Turtle Lake Heritage Project Live Research Project Conducted in Collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City University 2015, Vietnam The project investigated how the typical housing block could be adapted and extended to reconnect existing residents and reveal how these blocks are now a pleasant mix of homes, offices and local businesses. The project resulted in two large scale models which were then used in a new form of in-situ community engagement that borrowed from ideas of protest, creating a more visible and honest discussion of heritage in the face of blanket gentrification.
