Concept Statement: Industrial Entropy (existing, abandoned warehouse) and the process of returning to a natural, organic state (materials that change over time).

BERRY BUILDING MULTI USE

Tasked with redesigning the interior spaces of the historic Berry Building, I designed a multi use building with retail on the lower level, a two story restaurant and lounge located on the main street level, and luxury apartments on the third level. While developing the concept, I wanted to play on the idea of older structures being taken over by nature while still tying into the buildings industrial history. The existing floor plan showed a sea of timber columns and trusses. Initially the idea was to use these in creating a “forest like atmosphere. As the concept developed, it grew to become a single natural element that would run the entire height of the building similar to how moss grows on surfaces . This element became a green plant wall in the heart of the building symbolizing industrial entropy and the idea of nature taking over an industrial world.

Apartment Living Space

The inspiration for this house design was the lightness of the surrounding lake on the building site. The purpose was to have a structure that was partially built into the topography while also having a hovering, non-invasive relationship with the water. Thin structural supports beneath the home allow for stability. An open main floor helps enhance the lightness of the design.

Preliminary meetings with the lab director provided an in depth understanding of what was needed for instructors, student employees, and children attending the program. Within the design, natural curving forms as well as masking structural elements with “tree like” pieces were introduced to the space to integrate Waldorf Designing. Lowering ceiling heights and creating “covered” platforms gives the sense of security and whimsy to play.

Bus Shelter Model

Design teams were asked to research materials and use principles of sustainable design. With this knowledge, the City of Columbia came to student designers, tasking them with designing bus shelters to be used around town. Designs were first introduced to the public at the local Earth Day festival. The Public was then able to vote for their favorite design, where our team’s design won first place.

Roofing materials are 80% recycled steel from a local Missouri distributor. Metal support beams are made of 80% post-consumer recycled content and 10% post-industrial recycled content. Perforated metal panel were used to replace glass for a longer life span. Modular concrete panels can be decorated and replaced easily. The concrete is made with 35% fly ash, a residue generated in coal combustion. Como-Connect GES map Steel beams made from 80% recycled material, support the modular panels making up the main structure.

Front Elevation

A painted steel cap applied to the steel column, allows for easy route identification. The base of the shelter is a Filter Pave product. It consists of 100% post-consumer recycled glass used for natural filtration and reduce storm water runoff.
