Hello, my name is Olivia Cervasio, and I am a Fifth-Year Architecture (B.Arch) Student at Philadelphia University, graduating in May 2015, with a minor in Environmental Sustainability. Over the years, I have worked on projects pertaining to community development in the Philadelphia area, as well as abroad in South Africa and Rome, where I attended the University of Arkansas Rome Center for a semester. In the summer of 2013, I participated in a short course to study humanitarian architecture and participatory design in Johannesburg, South Africa. I also have experience working with Italian students for a master-planning proposal of the cultural Flaminia District in Rome, Italy, in the fall of 2013. My lifelong goal is to help build communities around the world and travel as much as possible in the process! I have realized my true passions of community planning, but also educational design. From a classroom, to a museum, community center, or even a student center, I look forward to designing spaces that inspire social interaction and lifelong learning among community members. My primary architectural interest lies in community planning and design centered around cultural identity and access to education, all while being mindful of the environment. I believe that creating a strong, knowledgeable community is the foundation for a sustainable and globally connected world we live in today.

RavenHub PhilaU Student Lounge

Philadelphia University’s newest student center is located in the basement of the Ravenhill Dining Hall and was previously the freshman architecture studio. The lounge features a gaming space, collaborative project space, quiet meeting rooms, and a workroom. Movable furniture and dry-erase boards allow students to make the space their own and mix learning with play. A unique spiral staircase connects the dining hall to the lounge. I assisted in all aspects of this project from space-planning to construction documents.

Search Hall Studio Philadelphia University

This studio located in Search Hall is the new freshman architecture/ interior design/landscape architecture studio. The space was completely renovated and has an exposed structural ceiling and open-concept spatial plan. Custom pin-up walls line the glass block wall facing campus. New carpet is used throughout to help with the acoustics in the space. For this project, I assisted with the detailing of the pin-up walls, other construction documents, and color schemes.

Freshman Dorms Rowan University

Due to the need for additional housing on campus, this project seeks to provide adequate housing solutions that exemplify Rowan University’s identity of collaboration and community. In hopes to create a positive culture around the issue of stormwater management on campus, the project is named COvalence Hall as a way to honor the geometry and formation of water molecules to form bonds. The idea is that the architecture will create social spaces for students and the community, centered around the efficiency and storage of water on campus.

Rowan University Master Plan

After an analysis of Rowan University’s current campus master plan, our team designed three scheme proposals to present to representatives from the University. Each proposal focuses on one of three important axes on campus, highlighting solutions to greenspace, stormwater, and pedestrian accessibility. Nodes at the intersections of these axes are designed spaces of connection and interaction, as well as various iterations of the street treatment along Rt. 322.

Flaminia Crossing Master Plan Proposal

Our master plan proposal for the sports complex on the western edge of Rome’s Flaminia District provides direct access from the pedestrian Ponte Della Musica (Music Bridge) to Monte Mario. There are current plans to put a funicular on the site; our proposal allows for more pedestrian access to the sports complex and redirects vehicular traffic to an underpass.

Alexandra Township Precinct Proposal

Following a walking tour of the youth precinct of Alexandra Township in Johannesburg, South Africa, we held two community charrettes. One was to come up with a list of words to be displayed on a mural on London Road where the community center and day care are. The community then helped us to actually paint the mural. The other charrette focused on the community center and precinct master plan. After listening to the input from community members, we came up with some renderings of the precinct master plan proposal and presented them to the community and important stakeholders.

Disaster Relief Temporary Shelter

The goal of this project was to create a rapidly-deployable disaster relief tent structure with a 600 dollar budget and a 400 pound weight limit to sleep three people for a period of 2-3 weeks. Our design is a pre-assembled accordion-like structure with large flaps for ventilation and features privacy dividers that also act as storage to house refugees’ belongings.

EMERGE Stewardson Competition

Located in Berlin, Germany, the transformative space is an emerging piece of architecture meant to engage visitors by honoring freedom, unity, and artistic expression. An outdoor connective space is informative and tranquil, with images and text projected onto flowing water surrounded by vegetation. The building functions as an art gallery that is an extension of the East Side Gallery, which displays artwork along the former Wall itself. The perception of the Wall is transformed to become a canvas that expresses the struggles and wonders of the human existence. A hands-on gallery allows users to leave their own messages of peace, tolerance, and freedom after inspired by the display.

THE 114th JOHN STEWARDSON MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP IN ARCHITECTURE - 2015 Berlin, Verwandeln The transformative space is an emerging piece of architecture meant to engage visitors by celebrating the uprooting of a symbol of oppression through honoring freedom, unity, and artistic expression. Although mainly below ground, passersby can look down into the spaces below. The transparency elicits a feeling of hope and rebirth from the confines of a past so symbolically and physically rooted in the earth, like a scar on the land. An outdoor connective space is informative and tranquil, with images and text projected onto flowing water surrounded by lush vegetation. The overall building form is meant to be a subtle gesture built into the landscape. The building functions as an art gallery that is an extension of the East Side Gallery, which displays artwork along the former Wall itself. The purpose of the program is to create a space where the perception of the Wall is transformed to become a canvas that expresses the struggles and wonders of the human existence while honoring the freedom of expression. The form also suggests that emerging artists, creating relevant pieces of art for today’s culture, need a space/platform for engaging the public with their art and the societal implications behind it. A hands-on gallery allows users to leave their own messages of peace, tolerance, and freedom after having been inspired by the display. The trees to the north of the site are a part of a series of art installations symbolic of connectedness, growth, and new beginnings. Visitors are encouraged to add tied knots that connect to each other and evolve the installation as more people add their physical promise of the symbolism of unity. The concept of EMERGE is to recognize the artists who used the Wall as a canvas of self-expression, creating moments of connection from an act of separation. The Wall may have been a physical barrier, but the artwork that was created as a result was able to connect people for a common vision of equality and freedom.

Network Tourism Alexandra Township

Creating a tourism network as a methodology for making tourism a relevant concept for citizens can address multiple issues in developing townships, such as youth unemployment, security, and community participation. By conducting participatory design methodologies in May of 2013, we found that a walking tour would be a viable way to showcase the cultural history and potential of the youth living in Alexandra. My proposal is to create tourism stops along a walking tour that provide public space, creative expression, and security to the public while also providing tourist destinations and information display.
