This project was a collaborative effort to study Emilio Ambesz’s Lucile Halsel Conservatory and develop an expansion for the existing program. Through extensive research and thoughtful design, our team developed four new components that enhance the human experience in the gardens and maintain the integrity of the original design. During the research phase, I investigated each botanical collection and the sustainable strategies used to achieve bioclimatic design. As we developed the expansion, I focused on the design and production of the roof forms both digitally and physically. Digital graphics, drawings, and diagrams were also included in my scope of work. 6

Geometric patterns from the existing roof forms were modified and reorganized to generate new roof configurations. Each roof structure is composed of carefully crafted aluminum space frames that let in the perfect amount of light for their respective ecosystems below.

MEDITERRANEAN The Mediterranean Shrublands exhibit features a unique collection of plants such as rosemary and rock roses that thrive in hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The organic pathway in this space was designed to reflect the path above that cuts through the roof. Mediterranean Section 11

BUTTERFLY PAVILION The butterfly pavilion is inhabited with flowering shrubs and bushes that attract a unique collection of insects. Its geometry is a cone, similar to existing structures, but shorter and wider so that the butterflies can easily navigate the space. Butterfly Section 12

The courtyard expansion is sunken into the ground like the rest of the project and connects to the existing palm house along the main axis of the site. With its structured seating area and large patio, it provides a more substantial event space to replace the existing tent.

The existing pond has been expanded underground to host a collection of marine life and corals, adding to the diversity of botanical collections in the garden. Visitors will follow a ramp along the curve of the lake to the bottom level where they can view the tank from an underground seating area.

YANCY COUNTY FARMERS MARKET BURNSVILLE, NC STUDIO III FALL 2020• IDEXLAB SPRING 2021 REVIT• SKETCHUP• PHOTOSHOP• INDESIGN Yancy county officials partnered with Appalachian State University to design and build a community farmer’s market in the heart of Burnsville, NC. This project focuses on developing this remote piece of land downtown into a market and event center to increase economic yield and build a greater sense of community. Although I was involved with every aspect of this project, my work was primarily focused on the unconditioned structure and office/flex space.

DESIGN CONCEPT The project began with careful analysis of the narrow site and surrounding community. With limited space and an extensive list of programmatic elements, it was crucial to develop a design with high levels of modularity and spatial flexibility. Sustainable building strategies, traffic patterns and community needs were also heavily investigated to ensure the highest level of quality in every aspect of the project. Conceptual Collage

SCHEMATIC DESIGN Further design development yielded prominent wooden roof forms that create a cozy village atmosphere and blend into the surrounding Landscape. The design also has the adaptability to host a variety of events including festivals, fundraisers and weddings.

A simple façade of dimensional wooden louvers is used to cover the garbage collection unit on site. This area is located at the far end property to deter harsh scents from the main market. A utility closet and storage space are also included, and create a buffer between the dumpster and the last market stall.
BENT STRUCTURE During the design process, the post structure was one of the most iterated elements of the project. The final design was selected for its economic feasibility, cross circulation functionality, and attentive integration with the other structural elements.

ROOF STRUCTURE The main structural elements of the final market design are the dual pitched roof forms which resemble the local landscape. This abstract mountain range was achieved by consolidating the roof into three unique trusses and staggering their orientation across the structural grid. Each truss is prefabricated with dimensional lumber for economic benefit.

Located in the center of downtown Burnsville, this new farmer’s market encapsulates community. The warm, rustic roof forms create a homey mountain village where local vendors, artists and tradesmen can share their goods and services.

Custom designed cabinetry and a vertical slat pegboard system were integrated into the office to maximize usable space and allow for high levels of flexibility. Additionally, a corrugated fiberglass sliding door serves as the threshold between public and private space.

Located just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway, this conceptual design proposes a new Kayak Club for visitors of Price Lake to gather. The building design reacts to the site by hugging the edge of the lake and providing exceptional views through curtain wall systems along the west and south facing walls. Two elliptical skylights are unique design features that let in additional sunlight to illuminate the forest like structure. The building is meant to connect occupants to the surrounding environment through its biophilic design strategy.

Inspired by the work of Lebbeus Woods, this conceptual design is meant to host the University Psychology department as well as a day care center and elderly care facility. An interactive play space is strategically placed below an observatory deck to allow psychology students to study the relationship between children and the elderly. The facility is designed to force unconventional relationships among occupants for unique psychological study.

INSECT INSIGHT ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO II SPRING 2020 Inspired by an origami scorpion, this project demonstrates the unique characteristics of the bug. Sharp features exaggerate the aggressive scorpion personality and cantilevered masses represent the weightlessness of the arthropod.
