christopher kane Christopher Kane was born as the youngest of five children in Newarthill, North Lanarkshire, to an engineer. His successes became well known after he won the Harrods Design award for his masters Graduate collection, this had given him the opportunity of winning 1.5k and a showpiece window in Harrods. He made dresses decorated with brass rings. His success didn’t stop there, he was hired by Versace to work on the labels Atelier couture collection and then graduated from Central Saint Martins college in 2006. He decided to open his own brand shortly after with his sister Tammy, who looked after the financial side of business and assisting his designing process as she had also gone to a textile college. His first show presented on sept. 2006 and consisted of short bandage dresses in neon colours, he wanted to make it big and bold. He was awarded Young Designer of the year at the Scottish awards and then launched a capsule collection for Topshop.

Competitors Alexander Wang was born on December 26, 1983, he is an American fashion designer, who began his company in 2005 and became extremely successful in 2008. From November 2012 to July 2015 he was the creative director for Balenciaga, his style is very urban and street, a lot of Balenciaga’s TMG became who they are thanks to Wang himself. His yearly revenues run around $10-50 million which comes at a close tie between Christopher Kane’s. Being one of Kane’s competitors, both have a similar TMG, being 18-30 YOA. Kane’s designs run closely to Wangs, however their difference in print is large. A lot of Wang’s designs are very simple, no print and not too much excessive colour, where as Kane likes to experiment with colour, print, size and volume in his clothing. He is well known for experimenting with leather, crochet, plastic and ginham making him an experimental designer. Wang’s company has a total of 175 employees and his main face being Bella Hadid – supermodel.

EVALUATION For this project our target was to design for a brand that was in the original brief, I decided to use Christopher Kane as my brand as I felt as though his work is very varied and changes every season. His S/S 2021-22 collection was all based on art, using VOGUE to screen his old work I used it as inspiration through the colours and captivating designs that he had featured. His designs are always very unique and his experimentation creates gorgeous outcomes. As a concept I decided to go ahead and use Allotment gardens which I gathered inspiration from Gardeners Delight from pattern bank as the prints were incredible and I felt as though id like to create something similar. As a trend I mixed this with grandmothers wardrobe as I felt both would go hand in hand considering most of our grandmothers wardrobe would have some sort of floral print featured. By using my concept and trend I was able to sketch out some designs that I then developed into working, final garments. For inspiration for my garments I used the practicality of gardeners delight with items such as dungarees and functional outdoor wear with belts and compartments to put equipment. It gave it a very proactive look and wanted the collection to be for WOMEN AT WORK. My colour pallete was developed from all of my research, I specifically saw a lot of sage and green in my research so I decided to include that as I felt it would be a good way to show development in my research. I incorporated a lot of plants and flowers and mixed up my pallettes to have variety. I kept all of my designs looking like a collection as I liked how they all complimented one another yet were completely different. I illustrated all of my work on illustrator to keep its graphic and simple design aethetic to match my master and my page layout. In order to improve on this project I would have definitely managed my time better as I found it difficult juggling three deadlines which made me fall behind a lot, however overall I believe I did a good job catching back up and getting back to speed with all of it. This project was a real eyeopener and taught me a lot about working with adobe and my creative self in general, ive really enjoyed it and was always looking forward to the final outcome.
