01 S P I N A L E C O S YS T E M O F F I C E third year fall semester The Spinal Ecosysem Office is a coworking space located right outside of downtown Knoxville. The space houses a wide variety of working conditions and postures that allow for a large range of work to be done, from individual workstations to a large center atrium. This design focuses on the psychological affect on the user as a result of biophilic qualities in the space. These qualities, such as access to natural light, air circulation, and living green spaces, have a direct impact on the user in terms of prodcutivty and overall well-being.
Each of these qualities are represented in different “spines” located throughout the coworking spaces. Each “spine” has its own distinct qualities and affects on the spaces they are located in. Even though these spaces each have their own characteristics, they all work together in order to create a wholesome and selfproductive environment for the users in the space.

02 JACKSON AVE MONTESSORI SCHOOL third year spring semester The concept for this project was first defined by research of what a Montessori school emphasizes and focuses on. Nature and engagment with the outdoors is a critical aspect of Montessori school life and incorporating this into the project would be ideal. Through the development of parti models, the project would include a central axis with circulation and program around that axis. Creating an environment in the interior

that contrasts with the urban landscape and exterior led to including biohpilic aspects in the centralized core of the school as well as in the surrounding program. These “green spaces allow for the students to be constantly engaged with nature, a key part of the Montessori teaching method, even in an urban environment.

03 TH E 8 3 5 EXP E R I E NTAL C HAR ETTE fourth year fall semester This experiential charette was used to help explore and define the big ideas of our project that would later be incorporated into our final design. This importance of deciding on these larger ideas and schemes would aid in the process of helping determine the overall atmosphere and design characteristics of our spaces. Ultimately, the end goal is to create a process of branding and design identity that could be incorpoated into the design. Having this charette helped to detemine which qualities I wanted to bring into the space as well as what programmatic elements I would include.

Knowing I would be designing a coworking space, a night market and a cafe, I thought of what could be an added benefit to get to know like-minded individuals in the Knoxville area that would be a potential coworker or client. I designed an inviteonly online social club called The 835. This online presence brings local Knoxville small business owners together in a virtual environment that encompasses the atmospheric qualities of what the built environment would entail. Through the creation of “pods that each person could travel to based on similar interests and likes, these small business owners would be able to create a network of connections from the comfort of their home.

THE 835 fourth year fall semester
Located in the heart of North Knoxville within a hub of small businesses, this business incubator and night market provides a space where local businesses can work together with like-minded entrepeneurs, while also giving them areas to sell their products and services in a night market setting. Connecting the private businesses with the public Knoxville community allows the two to form a network of relationships, further supporting the local creatives.
19
Bringing in the same atmospheric qualities from the charette, the small business incubator offers spaces such as conference rooms, makerspaces, as well as lounges, informal workspaces, and individual workstations. The night market includes the bar and cafe setting which gives the small business as well as the Knoxville community a place to connect and form relationships . The 835 gives the Knoxville community a space to network as well as form relationships with the local Knoxville arts community.
