FORMER KINGSMEN SINGER AND EXBOXER TEAM UP TO AID SYRIAN REFUGEES Heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield teamed up with The Kingsmen singer Yank Barry to help an estimated 6,500 Syrian refugees who have rushed into the Eastern European country after their homeland was torn apart due to a civil war. Evander Holyfield is a former professional boxer who holds notable victories over fighters including Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Michael Dokes, Riddick Bowe, Ray Mercer, Michael Moorer, Larry Holmes, John Ruiz and Hasim Rahman. He is the only 5-time World Heavyweight Champion. The pairing of a boxer and musician might seem odd, but both are united in the hope to help the vulnerable people who they once entertained. Evander Holyfield has played an amazing role in helping displaced Syrian refugees. Yank Barry, the founder and leader of Global Village Champions Foundation, claimed that he spent $1 million to help more than 50 Syrian refugees find accommodation in Sofia. Barry in his interview with The Jerusalem Post said that he has provided housing for 782 Middle Eastern Refugees in two hotels that he secured for US$3 million. His work has earned him the nickname "Schindler", after Oskar Schindler, a German entrepreneur who rescued Jews during the Holocaust. In addition, the organization provided 5 million meals to those affected by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Nearly 10,000 Syrian refugees are currently living in Bulgaria, according to the latest figures. This may seem like a modest figure in the context of the Syrian humanitarian catastrophe, but it's three times what the nation used to get on a yearly basis before the crisis. Finding a place to live is one of the biggest challenges faced by Syrian migrants in Bulgaria. Top refugees, the state provides only temporary housing in very modest conditions. Therefore, Yank Barry and his Global Village Champions took the responsibility of providing safe housing to the refugees. With the blessing & support of the President of The State Agency for Refugees; Council of Ministers in Bulgaria, from medical care to educating children, Yank has been providing refugees with a way to live a normal life.
