To Whom It May Concern:

I had the pleasure of working with Olivia Pereira from January 2021 – August 2021, while she was working as a co-op student, at the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo. Olivia’s role was integral to the success of our team. She helped with outward facing communications, for a variety of audiences: students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the School, using diverse mediums.

Olivia is a confident, dedicated worker, who is a fast learner and a positive addition to any work environment. She has a strong talent in oral and written communications and in design. She is highly capable at working both independently and as a team member, all the while with a smile on her face. Additionally, Olivia is also strong in any administrative tasks, and goes above and beyond in the projects she works on, completing them on or before the deadline, and with high quality work. Olivia also helped with virtual events for both internal and external audiences, and she was very apt at managing logistical and technical aspects of these events, including moderating Q&As.

I have strong confidence in Olivia’s many strengths and talents and happily recommend her as she is an asset to any team. Thank you for your time, and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or require additional information.

With thanks, Karen Browne Advancement Manager School of Architecture University of Waterloo kjbrowne@uwaterloo.ca

LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FOR OLIVIA PEREIRA

To Whom It May Concern:

This is to recommend Olivia Pereira for co-operative employment at your architecture firm. I taught Olivia most recently in the fall of 2020 in the 3B option studio POOL: Towards a Tactile-Tactical Architecture It was a delight to have Olivia and her curiosity, creativity and positive energy in the class. In the studio we explored adaptive reuse and architectural tactility through the typology of the public bath. We looked deeply into architecture’s possible relationship to ecology, the body, cultural ritual, and how buildings adapt to change. Course readings included a wide range of key texts in cultural history to give a grounding in canonical references as well as critical contemporary perspectives on thinking the body and public space. Olivia engaged deeply with the readings and participated whole-heartedly in our regular class discussions, clearly able to integrate and build new ideas into her expanding lexicon and develop her skills as a designer.

The term’s methodology alternated between analytic and expressive modes of architectural investigation, with the first project a series of grounding material investigations at 1:1 set in the student’s own home. The work had to engage with the history of ergonomics alongside a study of a highly tactile artistic practice. Based on her study of the hand and the work of Adriana Varejao, Olivia created a provocative redesign of her bathroom focusing on the instances of the handle and touch that received one of the highest marks in class. The second project’s objectives were evaluating contemporary building case studies against the concept of typology, critiquing ergonomic and inclusive approaches to design Olivia and her partner’s study of mineral springs and Basalt Architects’ Gudlaug Baths in Iceland. The project stood out in its clear and creative diagramming of the broad range of environmental factors that contributed to the design.

For our final project we sought to bring this tactility and tactical urbanism to the scale of the city we created new architectures for community rooted in Suely Rolnik’s body-knowing at the site of an under-utilized public pool, expanding its use for a year-round architecture of enjoyment as defined by Henri Lefebvre. The learning outcomes included pursuing your own design concerns and ideas in an adaptive reuse, large-scale public building, with specific focus on materiality and green interventions for a rich user experience. Olivia selected the site of the under-utilized and decommissioned Bain Mathieu inMontreal, and her project vividly took on the many concerns of the studio. Olivia successfully integrated her design intuitions, academic study, and her social, environmental, and political concerns to create a unique and playful community space. Her take on atmosphere in architecture and the interior as a site for climatic engagement with the neighbourhood was provocative. Olivia will be a great asset to your firm in her diligent approach to learning, playful approach to design, and serious interest in architecture.

01 (a)f(forest)ation

(a)f(forest)ation seeks to create a safe space for young people within the Six Nations community. Creating four pavilions relating to empowering the physical health and connecting with the natural environment - kayaking, fishing, harvesting, cooking - inspired the idea of forest clearings. The planned forest areas were shaped in response to the existing natural vegetation and terrain. All of the proposed plant species are capable of surviving on flood plains and with clay soil, careful consideration was taken in choosing plant species native to Canada. This project aims to connect the forces of flood levels, terrestrial species, natural vegetation, through a space where young people can foster a sense of community amongst themselves and with nature.

Green Hills

Located on Sherbourne St, this project aims to provide affordable housing for young, independent people and to connect to the surrounding community. Each unit in this building accommodates 2-4 people with private bedrooms and shared living facilities. The 280 residents of the building have access to the private communal space on each residential floor, and underground parking. On the main level of the building, their is a market space where local vendors can rent stalls to sell their goods. This market space is accessible yearround, and in the summer, more stalls are placed in the interior courtyard. The main level also has youth success services (accessible to all residents), communal classrooms, public co-working space, and a bike repair shop.

03 Threshold

Threshold, an adaptive re-use project located in the historic Ville Marie borough of Montreal, Canada, seeks to reinvent the decommissioned Bain Mathieu in a space for total regeneration. This design for a community bathing space seeks to prioritize the human experience of the space - with special focus on materiality and bridging connections to nature. An oversized elevator is the main means of transitioning between levels of the structure to support the movement of users in a wet (slippery) environment. The irregular protrusions off of either end of the original building allow for the addition of several programs into the scheme and provides a bright space to support an interior garden. Transitional day-night programming allows the site to be accessible at all times of day yearround.

04 The Hive

Allan Gardens is located at the intersection of Sherbourne St and Gerrard St E in Toronto. This park is surrounded mainly by residential properties and some support services. There is very little in terms of commercial- or community-based engagement in the surrounding area. Allan Gardens has an exotic plant conservatory in the form of a cast-iron and glass building, dating back to 1910, on the west side of the park. The Hive, located on the currently unused, east side of Allan Gardens, seeks to address the lack of community social space in the local area by proposing an outdoor marketplace to bring in local artisans and food to celebrate the diversity of the city of Toronto.

The Hive features a maximum of 48 vendor stalls, designed to be modular to adapt to the specific needs of different vendors. The steel framed modular stall can be doubled or tripled in size simply by modifying the arrangement of the wall panels, which slot into holes located at the seams of the hexagonal floor plates that make up the interior space of the market, and rotating the counters. The hexagonal floor plates lends itself to creating an interesting and open concept circulation within the market, the arrangement of the vendor stalls creates three aisles for visitors to explore, all leading to the central gathering space.

Parco del Popolo

Tiber River (in Italian Fiume Tevere), the second longest Italian river after the Po; rising on the slope of Monte Fumaiolo, a major summit of the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano. It is 252 miles (405 km) long. The Tiber flows through the city of Rome and enters the Tyrrhenian Sea of the Mediterranean near Ostia Antica. Its major tributaries are the Chiascio, Nestore, Paglia, Nera, and Aniene. Below Rome, the Tiber branches out into a delta, the main channel being the Fiumara, with the Fiumicino functioning as a distributary branch on the north side.

The proposed intervention is inspired by the medieval urban scheme of mediating between the city of Rome and the Tiber River. This was a tiered approach which bridged the natural and commercial entities of the city and highlighted the central life force of the Tiber in feeding the city. Breaking down the enclosing wall of the site the proposal opens up to the urban fabric. Tiering down to the river abolishes the harshness of embankment walls and celebrates the physical and visual connection visitors will have to the city and its life force.

Sketches from site visit

The site is located on the South side of the Porta Portese. It’s an abandoned arsenale complex. Made of brick, concrete and wood, the structure has an imposing footprint and visual presence. Yet the surroundings are engulfed in greenery.

The neighbourhood is a mix of large scale institutional buildings and commercial space. The Porta Portese represents a change in urban landscape. A defining characteristic of the urban space is the Sunday market which sees a diverse crowd of Romans.

Along the river, the North edge of the site represents the end of the embankment structure and a shift to supposed wilderness. The biologically diverse Tiber ecosystem shines and takes over in a monumental way.

06 Rome Sketchbook: Selected Works

The creation of the Waterloo Rome Program in 1979 was motivated by the twin desires to explore the history of architecture and the city in the most direct and inspiring possible ways and to reconsider the role of architectural drawing, to rescue it from being a pure instrument of production and marketing; to make it a vital and vivid source of analysis, inspiration, speculation and experimentation. The goal of the course is to the trace the form of the cities of Italy from the end of the ancient world to the dawn of the modern era, always considering the historical, political, intellectual, artistic, spiritual and social background. Most of all the aim is to see the city as a system of spaces and forms that follow and express ideas about human order and sustain urban life.

70 sketches were created between May and July 2022.
