A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Dear friend of Olney Theatre Center, On a June night in 2004 I had the great pleasure of seeing Avenue Q on Broadway, the night before it won the Tony Award for Best Musical. (I went to the Tony Awards that year, too, but that’s another story!) What I remember most from that evening was how difficult it was to catch my breath in between peals of laughter; one unexpected moment after another, mounting in hilarity. The show’s incredibly witty script and those deliriously funny puppets sang their way into my heart. As a member of “Generation X,” the first generation after the Baby Boomers, I saw in the striving, struggling characters in Avenue Q a reflection of myself. Like the musical’s lead character Princeton, my cohorts and I have been striving and struggling for a purpose beyond ourselves, something to make us worthy: collectively, of following the Baby Boomers and their incredible contributions to America; and individually, of fulfilling the promise of our parents to build on the prosperity they left us. Though Generation X is now passing the torch of struggling and striving to Generation Y and the Millennials, the quest for purpose and meaning remains. In a culture without a unifying national purpose, Gen Y and the Millennials are turning ever more inward – aided, no doubt, by a technological culture that privileges self-importance and self-promotion. That’s why the themes of Avenue Q resonate so strongly ten years after winning the Tony Award. What Princeton and his friends in Avenue Q learn is that relationships, friendships, and community are ultimately more important than ambition. Or perhaps better put: ambition and a higher purpose for the individual mean little without the community and relationships to back them up. That may seem a lot to put on what at first glance feels like a simple, funny show, but remember, the creators of Avenue Q were sending up Sesame Street for a new generation with love and respect. And Sesame, begun way back in 1969 to educate the first group of Gen Xers, has always promoted the importance of a diverse community to the development of the individual. One of the best parts of producing at Olney Theatre Center is that I can program such a diversity of shows for our growing audience. We can produce intimate plays like I and You, explosive classics like The Piano Lesson, and then hilarious musicals like Avenue Q. I’m glad you’re with us on the journey. DRAMATURGICAL NOTES “Gratuitous offense, when performed with aplomb, is the funniest thing in the world...Sweary tastelessness is a celebration of life, as soaring and majestic as a gospel choir in full flow.” – Charlie Brooker, The Guardian, 2007 Avenue Q is arguably the most self-explanatory play in Olney Theatre Center’s 2014 season, so why compose a dramaturgy note at all? Why delve into this overtly silly story of puppets and expletives and explosively loud bedroom scenes beyond what’s already there? Perhaps this note is not necessary. Perhaps you, as a valued member of Olney’s viewing family, are already accustomed to the bizarre and often abrasive form of storytelling we are presenting today; on the other end of the spectrum, maybe you haven’t considered the thematic range of felt puppets past their ability to teach you about the art of sharing. No matter your personal history with this type of humor, however, it is worth exploring what makes the entire concept of Avenue Q – puppets doing and saying distinctly un-puppetlike things – so resonant. So let’s begin with a history lesson: 1989, The Simpsons: “If cartoons were meant for adults, they’d put them on in prime time.” 1992, South Park: “Right now, you’re nuttier than Chinese chicken salad. I mean, you’re one screwed up little kid, do you understand?” 1999, Family Guy: “You’re not supposed to admire wheelchair people. You’re supposed to feel sorry for them.” 2003, Avenue Q: “Well, just take your pick.” These quotes, while amusing in their own right, hinge on a crucial, missing visual element: the characters delivering these lines look like the cartoons we typically associate with children’s entertainment. Over the past few decades, artists have been toying with this contrast, pitting visually nostalgic characters against thematically adult narratives – and even though they appear to rip giant holes in our most beloved childhood experiences, we just cant look away. Avenue Q employs this technique to the extreme, paying direct homage to some of Jim Henson’s most iconic creations. But the story itself doesn’t really need these referential characters; if co-creators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx stripped their musical of its fuzzy inhabitants, they could still use the same songs to track down Princeton’s ever-elusive purpose. So why pay tribute to Henson’s world at all? It boils down to the most iconic and most controversial element of Avenue Q: its ability to offend. Although making nostalgic cartoons adult-friendly is a somewhat recent phenomenon, puppets have been, historically speaking, a grownup pastime. Until about a century ago, when American artists started delegating puppets as a strictly children’s form of entertainment, they were most commonly used to bring to life stories and ideas that were taboo for human actors –physical violence, cursing, and, of course, sex. Jennifer Barnhart, an original Avenue Q cast member and Muppeteer for Sesame Street, once explained the unique advantage that puppetry offers as an art form: “[Puppets] have been used often as political subversives, because it puts things at a little bit of a distance. It’s sometimes hard to exactly tell who the guilty party is…You can hide behind puppets.” That isn’t to say that Avenue Q’s message is using its puppets as a shield–far from it. The musical’s characters belt and argue and shout everything on their minds–their frustrations and aspirations, even their sexual desires. The fact that puppets, very Muppet-like puppets for that matter, express all of these adult concepts is what makes the humor so effective. The characters in Avenue Q aren’t just grown-up and crude; at times, they can be downright insulting. Princeton, Kate, Rod, Nicky–these characters can speak, sing, and perform a multitude of truths that human actors are generally barred from exploring. They go to absolute extremes to reach these moments of thematic clarity (extremes that would probably make Kermit cover Miss Piggy’s eyes) but ultimately, they uncover some astoundingly poignant messages about very human experiences. – Maegan Clearwood, Dramaturg

Jeff Marx (Music and Lyrics, Original Concept) met Robert Lopez at the the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop. It was there that Avenue Q was born. Originally from Hollywood, FL, Jeff attended the workshop as a as a young lawyer, looking for clients, and ended up leaving law and becoming a songwriter. Forever grateful to the BMI Workshop, he has worked on such projects as NBC’s Scrubs and Disney’s Bear in the Big Blue House. Jeff Whitty (Book) won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Avenue Q. Plays include The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler, The Hiding Place, The Plank Project, Suicide Weather, and Balls. Recent regional work as a director includes the world premiere of Broke (Alliance Theatre, Atlanta), Time Stands Still (Everyman, Baltimore), Crime and Punishment and Working It Out (CenterStage, Baltimore), Adding Machine: A Musical (Studio Theatre, DC), and a dozen plays for Chicago’s Next Theatre Company, where he served as Artistic Director from 2002-08. Those credits include the Chicago area premieres of Dying City, Defiance, The Long Christmas Ride Home, and Fabulation. He conceived and directed the world premiere of The American Dream Songbook, wrote and directed the world premiere of War With the Newts, and produced Chicago premieres by Caryl Churchill, Suzan-Lori Parks, Carson Kreitzer, Sam Shepard, Dael Orlandersmith, and many more. He is a three-time grantee from the NEA for Artistic Excellence, a recipient of support from the Rockefeller MAP Fund and MacArthur’s International Connections Fund, and a TCG New Generations Future Leaders grant. Jason joined Olney Theatre Center as Artistic Director in 2013 after serving four years as Executive Director of the National New Play Network. Christopher Youstra (Associate Artistic Director, Musical Theater/Musical Director of Avenue Q) As the past resident music director, Chris has music directed and conducted around 30 musicals at the Olney Theatre, including this year’s How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.
