Gordon Barney and Lorraine Daylight Father and Daughter Olsen Annexe in association with Warmun Art Centre | 21 February – 21 March Birnoowoon Country (in short version Birnoo Country) aka Alice Down station. Alice Downs is situated approximately 59 kilometres northeast of Halls Creek and 86 kilometres south of Warmun in the Kimberley region. A portion of it flows through the property, along with many of its tributaries, such as Eales Creek and Wild Dog Creek. Stock can also be watered at numerous springs. The area consists of open downs covered with Mitchell, Flinders and bundle grasses. Birnoo Country holds amongst others, one of the most precious and rare materials to still exist; the Moundu = White Ochre, used for ceremony, body paint and in Gija paintings. This area is within the Gija Country, which is huge in its dimensions. The birthplace, landscape, alongside to the stories and dreaming, and important survival knowledge and wisdom are presented in the artworks. Gordon Barney and Lorraine Daylight – Father and Daughter, 3rd and 4th Generation. Mr. Barney was born and raised in this area, and is one of the custodians, protectors, and storyteller of that land. Gordon was born and grew up on Alice Downs Station. His father taught him stockwork and he became known as a skilled horse breaker and buckjumper (rodeo rider). When Gordon worked as a stockman, he would often carry with him a saddle bag for his ochre collection. At the end of his mustering stint, he would have a bagful of ochres that he sourced from riding through his country. Whilst working on Mabel Downs Station, Gordon met Shirley Purdie who later became his wife. Shirley is a well-known senior Warmun artist who encouraged Gordon to paint his country. Gordon Barney also shares an important story of one of the most horrific, viciously brutal, and unhuman massacres that took place in Birnoo country surroundings. He paints the story to commemorate, pay respects, ensure it is never forgotten, but most of all to heal & acknowledge the strength, courage, and resilience of his people. Those artworks are protected and treasured and are part of Warmun's community collection. Lorraine Daylight was taught to paint this Country by her father. He was intimately familiar with Birnoo and would take his family, including Lorraine, out onto Country during holidays from station work. As a result of these trips Lorraine learned of her father and grandmother's Country and gradually began to paint it herself. Birnoo was also rich in ochre, so these trips could double as ochre collection trips, returning to Warmun with a fresh connection to Country and a renewed batch of ochre.
