Teo Treloar | Someone must have been telling lies about Joseph K. Olsen Gallery, 2024
Someone must have been telling lies about Joseph K is my latest body of work, created 2023-2024. The drawings reinterpret themes and narrative concepts that appear in Franz Kafka’s classic book, The Trial. First published in 1925, a year after Kafka’s death, The Trial follows the character Joseph K’s confounding experience when he is arrested, tried, and executed for a crime that is never revealed.
To create reference material for these drawings, I have used the AI image generator Dall.e2, feeding in names, words, sentences, and narrative ideas from The Trial. I have then remade these generated images through the analogue drawing process thereby creating a new body of drawings on paper. By exploring the relationship between The Trial, AI image generation and drawing, I am exploring the intersections between technology, human centred creativity, and perennial existential themes. Blending a classic existential text with the traditional art practice of drawing.
