Complexity grows from breaking simple rules. My ideas start simple, and progress through variations of the basic laws. Being observant is fundamental for creativity. In order to be creative, I relish every opportunity to discern how to learn. Diagramming circulation implies movement is uniform. For me, disparity in human crowds transcends representation. Everything starts from an idea. In order for architecture to exist it has to come into realization and affect people. I am simple, observant, prefer to create disparity and hope to connect with people through realizations.

UWM-Shorewood Neighborhood

Solving human related problems is why I enjoy architecture and UWM’s edge condition is a problem of people’s perspectives. The site for a fictitious new student dormitory was the between a neighborhood and the University campus. It was a large parking lot and its constraints were both physical and psychological. I decided to tackle the problem of the people by proposing location was at an undefined campus edge, which was especially uninviting to the neighbors. Putting a new dormitory on an edge close to the neighborhood would alienate the neighbors UWM tries to connect with annually. My solution: create a park which ramps up towards the campus while utilizing and extending the natural inclination of the ground. Concept: a connected social walkway from street level to campus level that infects the tower also. 12

Diagramming was a key element of solving the how the floor plans and elevations fit together. The formation of social spaces and the form of the tower are based on the width measurements of the windows and each floors planned social need. The deformation of the various floor plans is based on an intersection of the plan, elevation and form of the tower.

K.Cho, Sculpture [302] fall2010

A man’s psyche and the possibilities of how he matures is a complex web of interconnections that link to different parts of his life. With the above premise, Cosmos explores the structure of how knowledge is gained. The initial intent was to create five layers sculpture; relationships education family responsibility opportunity to represent a complete man. To establish a well-defined foundation for the [completed] sculpture, I selected the education layer and examined it through my aptitude. The materials used were flexible plastic tubing, wire 0.05- 0.1 gauge wire and colored wire. These choices were fundamental for representing where my technical knowledge base originated from: my father, an electrical engineer. Learning is both planned and spontaneous. Interaction in a social gathering proved adequate analysis. My conclusion, knowledge is gained through retention, and acquiring more knowledge is based on familiarity and similarity. initial sketches of sculpture representing a complete man

Each orb of this layer is a representation of the body of knowledge gained on different subjects, relevant to my growth as an individual and professional. The largest and central orb is my main focus [goal in life] and every orb of knowledge gained feeds that center to help it grow. Future development of this layer aims for the goal’s base to increase with other major orbs that form, and create a multifaceted human knowledge with one overwhelming central focus. aggregation

Discerning my concept, took numerous attempts and various media exploration for solving the existent detachment in circulation, on the site. Chemin recognizes the problem of a disconnected path and seeks to create the invisible path created by pedestrians, crossing highways and through drug-activated areas. 5 second ink concept: #27 of 40

The word Chemin is french for pathway. Though the prompt of the assignment asked for housing, my goal was to create a path and community space for Porte de la Chapelle residents to traverse safely to/from the metro, their homes. Through research and observation, movement through space is achieved by going the shortest route possible with the least amount of interruptions, by external forces. The walkway structure is created to be spacious to allow for spontaneous gathering which would otherwise be a street activity. 34

Escaping [NY] september 2011

medium: ink and graphite

A rare free day being spoiled by the rain, my sketch book was used to capture my mood and the day. The mood: damp and gloomy. I explored the shapes in wall cracks, curves of clothes, right-angles of the table, fridge and walls, and following contour lines through multiple objects. The goal while drawing was to re-imagine and capture a surreal-combination different expeditions as a whole story. The combination and limitations of that day summed up what Escaping is for me: being captivated. 42

Derelict [Lyon] january 2012

medium: graphite [below] , redrafted forms [bottom of page]

An educational excursion in new Lyon triggered the exploration of unconscious repositioning by landmarks. The opportunity gave us the view of New Lyon’s development and abandonments. My framed view of Lyon, is ironic: the old city is more developed and easier to navigate than the new city with the absence of landmarks. This exploration of Lyon is based on our walkthrough and journey. The blind contour line drawing was started from the outset and developed through memory and in transition, of our walk. The original drawing was done in motion, to add the feeling of movement in the new urbanism. The result is a juxtaposition of the free and diagrammatic movement and context proposed erected buildings on the river edge. The colored in shapes represent the buildings, as they should react to the modes of movement mentally traversed by the human mind without having to conform to right-angles. 44

Living in the Sky [Paris] april 2012

Original watercolor [below], Layers 3-5 only [bottom of page]

“My brush on paper” series was a 12-day exploration in objective representation with watercolors. The most emphatic idea in the first half-hour of awakening is explored. Objective: arrive at the words/phrase without a preconceived plan. No. 2 of a 12 series was based on the words “clouds”. The aim with each painting is to layer it and criticize it until it reaches the end, which is dependent on how far the most recent iteration is from the first. Each new layer added is a combination of some scanning, redefined concepts, repainting, redrawing and new keywords. Making the final drawing subjective from objective inception. In a way, its an architecture built up from an idea based on design principles and words used to define what the concept is. The latest image of this series is a combination of drawn and scanned layers, gradients, computer rendered imagery, photoshop shapes and a color-scheme based on Peter Cook [architect] drawing but the original image is still apparent, which makes it far from its end. 46
