PLACES AND NON-PLACES An Exploration of spaces behind, beneath and above

In the present day, a multitude of activities has made it common for people to get so busy that they become disengaged and the activities become perfunctory. Subsequently, the multitude of places that are contexts for these activities are not conducive to positive human interaction. This is the origin of supermodernity. Supermodernity has led to a culture of solitude and consumption and eventually, to the formation of places and non-places. The Lincoln Cathedral served as a vehicle to investigate the qualities of non-places, how they exist or do not exist, the quality of transience and the anonymity it bestows on the users through the writings of Marc AugĂŠ and Michel de Certeau and Henri Lefebvre. The ideas were taken to Bromley-By-Bow, London where a site that produces the real-life quantifications of the ideas and concepts supporting non-places was selected. For my building design brief, the plan is for every single part of the building is fully flexible and useful ‘decentralised’, all spaces feeding into eachother. In order to facilitate continuous interaction and possibly foster social cohesion within the host community; Bromley-by-Bow. I designed an arts based youth hub that serves the cummunity and its environs

Building Drawings and Schematics The design of the building was majorly influced by precedent studies and readings mentioned on the previous page. The works architects SANAA came to mind as the building design evolved. The building consisted of pods where major activities took place. This was however not the major focus of the building as the purpose of the whole project is to see how architecture could catalyse interaction. To this end, the corridors were made bigger than normal with nooks and niches facing the river for the building users to sit and interact and collaborate with each other. To link the building with the surrounding areas, a bridges were introduced accross the River Lea. The major facade element was the steel louvres, these helped to give the building a homogenous character while maintaining an almost seamless relationship between the external environment and the building itself.

ADJUSTABLE LOUVRES Asides from being the major distinguishing architectural feature in the building, the louvres provide shading and reduce solar heat gain. They can be adjusted depending on the sun height at different times of the year

DOUBLE GLAZED GLASS ROOF PANEL This helps to provide solar heating

WIDE EAVES These are designed to provide solar shading all year round

ENERGY PRODUCTION The river will be used to heat the building through the use of a water source heat pump

LIVE-WORK-PLAY COMPLEX Year 4 Design Project

This project was in response to the question “what is life?” throughout the year, I sought to understand what life meant to different people with a focus on my home Lagos. I was able to come to the conclusion that to most people life could be thought to be based on work and play. but in recent times, it was mostly based on work because of the rat race we all semed to be running in the quest to actualize our dreams. This project sought to examine how a balance could be achieved. through the design of an mixed use estate in the heart of the business district of Lagos. The design was an attempt to integrate colour into the “concrete jungle”. In response to the question posed, a mixed use sustainable building was designed. The building sought to integrate work and play while ensuring that a connection with the street and surrounding environment. This integration was achieved by creating an area for street vendors and other small businesses to rent and carry out business. On every floor, interaction was catalysed by large stair halls with sitting areas and games as well as beautiful views of surrounding areas (the building orientation ensured this). Other functions include gym, short stay apartments, co working spaces and restaurants.

Building Drawings and Schematics The building was designed to follow a rigid grid to allow for easy replication. This is because the vision for the scheme is replication across various business hubs in the Lagos Metropolis. The building is primarily mixed use as earlier stated. The stair halls double as lounges where the patrons can sit and have a chat with other people. These in addition to the balconies allow patrons to enjoy the view.

ENVIRONMENTAL STRATEGIES To take advantage of the climatic characteristics of the area the building is located in, the following strategies were employed

Green Roof serves as productive landscape for planting vegetables and herbs as well as an interaction area for building users. Reduces heat island effect and reduces heat gain of the building

Window Hoods to reduce the effect of direct sunlight. this helps keep interior cool and in turn reduce energy used in cooling the building

Canopies and Pergola to provide shades for the outdoor areas so people can enjoy the views while protected from the tropical sun

Green Wall cooling and building as w acoustic bar

l to provide extra insulation for the well as act as an rrier

Screen wall to allow ventilation while providing privacy. the screen wall was design was inspired by the ankara fabric native to Nigeria and West Africa at large

Solar Panels positioned to make optimal use of sunlight for energy production Steel Louvres to act as shading devices for the windows to reduce solar heat gain and reduce energy required to cool the building

SHADEX BOUTIQUE Renovation work carried out in Lagos, Nigeria

This was a renovation work where a residential building consisting of 4 different units was converted to a boutique and a clothes making factory. It has now been completed and is currently in use. Role: lead designer

MODELMAKING

ORGONE ACCUMULATOR Orgone accumulator was a project done by the whole masters class for a real client, a philosopher to test whether the concept of orgone actually existed. My main contribution was in the construction process, although I also contributed ideas during the conceptual stage.

FINAL DESIGN PROJECT- Structural Model While designing this project, one of the most comfusing things to me was the connection in steel framed structures. In trying to understand it fully, this model was developed. Asides from showing the structural elements evident in the project, this model shows the tectonics of the youth art center. The three environments created -Internal, External and Inbetween (PseudoInternal). These zones are marked with different conditilons with the internal being the most controlled and the external left totally untouched. The Internal area is that separated by the structural members, the intermediate is the area around the structural members but within the louvres, while the external area is the ‘grey area’
