We are ecstatic to welcome special guest Crispin Hellion Glover to the festival! He is returning to Olympia from the Chez Republic to celebrate the 10th anniversary tour of his “It” series of 35mm films. Many will recognize Crispin from his role as the nervous Marty McFly from the Back to the Future series; however, his macabre onscreen characters and avant-garde and rebellious filmmaking and story-telling has garnered him valued performances in more than 50 films. He is the author of several books and is in the midst of directing a new film of which he will unveil a preview on opening night!

A note from the 2015 Festival Program Director Hello festival fans! It’s your Festival Program Director here to share with you what to watch for at this year’s Olympia Film Festival. As you flip through this program you might get sensory overload, since you’ll probably want to see EVERYTHING, but here are some highlights. This year’s festival spans the world and all genres. If you like foreign films, you can’t go wrong with the flashy Cannes prize winner “Embrace of the Serpent” or Albania’s Best Foreign Film submission, “Bota”. If you are a documentary fan, you’re in for a treat with a super special ‘work in progress’ screening of “The Brainwashing of My Dad” where YOU will give the filmmakers feedback on their excellent film before it makes a huge splash at Sundance next year! Local film fanatics can take a journey into the deep dark woods with “Valley of the Sasquatch”. And followers of the not normal have a plethora of choices from the bizarre black comedy “Der Bunker” to the animated action film parody “Manieggs” to the not-to-be missed bizzaro rarity “An American Hippie in Israel”. And, of course, there are the classics, from Mick Jagger in “Performance” to angels in black overcoats in “Wings of Desire”. In truth, there’s almost too much to choose from! I haven’t even mentioned All Freakin’ Night, HUMP! Tour, Moonwalkers, or all the special guests we have lined up. For real… the best thing to do is buy a Full Pass and spend the next 10 days at The Capitol Theater where you will be whisked away on an amazing adventure that you will remember forever and ever. It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine. 2007 / US / 74 minutes / Format: 35mm Director: David Brothers / Crispin Glover Print Source: Crispin Glover It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine. goes into uncharted cinematic territory, with screenwriter Steven C. Stewart starring in this semi-autobiographical, psycho-sexual tale about a man with severe cerebral palsy and a fetish for girls with long hair. Part horror film, part exploitation picture, and part documentary of a man who cannot express his sexuality in the way he desires (due to his physical condition), this fantastical and often humorous tale is told completely from Stewart’s point of view – that of someone who has lived for years watching people do things he will never be able to do. Here, Stewart’s character is something of a lady killer -seducing a troubled, recently divorced mother (Margit Carstensen), her teenage daughter, and any number of other ladies he encounters along the way. "Glover and Brothers force you to see this crippled person as a suave leading man. To say the film is weird would be cliché. The odd thing about it all - it works. It's actually refreshing to see someone who actually has cerebral palsy in a film rather than some actor playing someone with cerebral palsy--" - Chris Gore, Film Threat

“I'm passionate about making films that cause people to question things. I see a great untruth being perpetrated in corporately funded filmmaking wherein the audience believe they are getting one moral but are in fact fed propaganda that serves corporate interests” – Crispin Glover (Dazed interview with Carmen Gray)

Embrace of the Serpent

Green Lady presents Drama / NW Wonders 2015 / US / 70 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Zach Weintraub Print Source: Zach Weintraub

Rob and his friend Austyn apply to become human guinea pigs at the local medical testing facility of a vaguely intentioned multinational company called EvCorp. As the facility’s mere presence has bitterly polarized their town, the two apply in stealth. Austyn is accepted, ushered away and out of contact into EvCorp’s shadowy interior, leaving Rob to bear the burden of secrecy and the private concern that all may not be well with his friend. As he navigates both sides of the town’s deepening rift, guilt and denial do battle in his mind, evoking eerie visions, paranoia, and a strange physical malady. Produced entirely in Olympia during the summer of 2014, Slackjaw features many fine local spaces and faces. Join us for a Q&A with the filmmaker after the screening!

Lukens Tree Preservation presents Adventure

2015 / Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina / in five languages with English subtitles / 125 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Ciro Guerra Print Source: Oscilloscope Laboratories

Winner of the Director’s Fortnight prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Embrace of the Serpent is an adventure story set in the Amazonian rainforest. It is the early 1900s: Theodor, a German explorer who is deathly ill, has traveled deep into the jungle in search of a rare plant he thinks will save his life. A young shaman called Karamakate reluctantly agrees to accompany him, even though he objects to the devastation the white men have wrought. Forty years later, a man named Evans has traveled into the jungle, seeking the same healing plant. Karmakate once again is the guide, but now he’s alone—the last of his people. As they trek into the forest, the shocking toll of the foreign invasion is witnessed—evidence of a way of life eradicated by greed. Filmed in arresting black & white, Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter calls Embrace of the Serpent “visually mesmerizing”.

The Glamour & The Squalor Documentary/NW Wonder

2015 / US / 80 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Marq Evans Print Source: Marq Evans

In the early ‘90s, vacuous hair metal gave way to Grunge, as ‘alternative music’ was forced from the underground. Seattle radio DJ Marco Collins was an innovating force in this musical revolution. The Glamour & The Squalor is a documentary about his rise and fall, and his eventual rebirth as a stalwart talent in the world of music. As the Music Director and evening host on Seattle’s 107.7 The End, Marco used his keen musical instinct to break bands. He was the first person to play Nirvana on commercial radio, and had a pivotal role in the success of musicians like Death Cab For Cutie, Beck, Garbage, Catherine Wheel, Harvey Danger, and Weezer, among many others. In the height of the Seattle music boom, Marco was living the life of a rock star—but he was also living a lie. The Glamour & The Squalor follows Marco’s fascinating journey as he comes to terms with his true self, and the remarkable talent that lead him to a place in The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Join us for Q&A with the filmmaker and Marco Collins after the film!

The Rachel Corrie Foundation presents The Wanted 18

Documentary, Animation 2014 / Canada, Palestine, France / in Arabic, Hebrew, French with English subtitles / 75 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Paul Cowan, Amer Shomali Print Source: Kino Lorber

The Wanted 18 is an informative and entertaining documentary that tells the astonishing true story of a Palestinian uprising of cows on the lam from the Israeli Army. For a period in the 1980’s, Palestinians were not allowed to grow their own food under Israeli occupation. The town of Beit Sahour decided to rebel, refusing to buy Israeli milk, and purchasing 18 cows with the initiative to create their own milk collective. After they reached their goal, the Israeli Army set their sights on the town’s newfound independence and decided to destroy the cows at any cost. Featuring claymation, archival footage, and a light hearted tone, The Wanted 18 illustrates this courageous act of rebellion with a farcical tone that emphasizes the ludicrousness of the situation, while also underlining its historical value and weight. An American Hippie in Israel Comedy / Drama 1972 / Israel / 95 minutes / Format: 35mm Directed by: Amos Sefer Print Source: Grindhouse Releasing

An American Hippie in Israel is a statement on hippie culture gone terribly wrong. We join Mike the hippie as he steps off a plane in Israel. He’s here because he’s fed up. Fed up with America. Fed up with popular culture. Fed up with THE WORLD, man! He’s been to Vietnam. He knows all about the violence men can carry out. That’s why he’s here—in Israel. This is where he’s going to create utopia: a place where you don’t have to wear clothes if you don’t want to, and rules don’t mean anything either—a place where you can be free to be a hippie with no hassles. But then of course things don’t turn out as planned, and that’s no thanks to THE MAN that seems to foil his every move. An unprecedented triumph in super strange and extremely funny and entertaining cinema, An American Hippie in Israel is a long lost treasure of the wonderfully bizarre that must be seen by all!

7:30pm What Is It? "Crispin Hellion Glover's Big Slide Show part 1" Drama Q&A and Book Signing with Crispin Glover There will be a preview of Crispin's next directorial feature during the Q&A at this event. This is the first time Crispin and his father Bruce Glover have acted together. Bruce Glover has been in such films as Diamonds Are Forever and Chinatown. In addition, Crispin performs a one hour dramatic narration of eight different profusely illustrated books. The images from the books are projected behind Mr. Glover during his performance. 2005 / US / 72 minutes / Format: 35mm Director: Crispin Glover Print Source: Crispin Glover

A favorite at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, Moonwalkers is an action-packed comedy, where a notorious conspiracy theory is revealed to be the real deal—to a point. The year is 1969 and CIA agent Kidman (Ron Perlman) has been assigned by the US government to track down director Stanley Kubrick, fresh off of 2001: A Space Odyssey, and convince him to film a version of the moon landing to quell the American public. As Kidman hangs out in swinging ‘60s London, searching for the elusive Kubrick, he crosses paths with Jonny (Rupert Grint), a seedy rock promoter. When it becomes obvious that finding Kubrick is impossible, Jonny convinces Kidman that they themselves can make the film—and a load of cash. Craziness follows as the two embark on pulling off the ultimate con in a world where filmmaking explodes into a confetti of hilarious disorder.

WHAT IS IT? premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and won Best Narrative Film at the 2005 Ann Arbor Film Festival. In the same year Mr. Glover was awarded the prestigious Maverick Award from the Method Fest, which was presented to him by, esteemed film director Werner Herzog. The film also won the Midnight Extreme Award at the Sitges Film Festival Spain 2006. It has played to sold out audiences in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle on this Fall 2006 tour. Known for creating many memorable, incredibly quirky characters onscreen as an actor, Glover's first effort as a director will not disappoint fans of his offbeat sensibilities and eccentric taste. Featuring a cast largely comprised of actors with Down's Syndrome, the film is not about Down's Syndrome. Glover describes it as "Being the adventures of a young man whose principal interests are snails, salt, a pipe and how to get home as tormented by an hubristic racist inner psyche." In addition to writing and directing What Is It?, Glover also appears in the film in the role of "Dueling Demi-God Auteur and The young man's inner psyche." Actress Fairuza Balk voices one of the snails. “ABSOLUTELY the most uncompromising and original thing I've seen. People try to compare it to the likes of surrealist hero Luis Buñuel and trailblazer Werner Herzog, but I say Glover has transcended even them. " --Kelly O, The Stranger

Handcrafted 35mm Experimental Direct Animation Loops

1970 / UK / 105 minutes / Format: 35mm Directed by: Donald Cammell, Nicolas Roeg Print Source: Warner Brothers

Made by fellow Olympians, and brought to you by Crackpot Crafters and OFS Film School Live audio accompaniment by Peter Randlette

Performance is a psychedelic fever dream featuring Mick Jagger in his film debut. Chas is a gangster on the run who ends up renting a room from the mysterious Mr. Turner. Turner (Jagger) is a rock star on hiatus, waiting in seclusion for his inner muse to reappear. Meanwhile, he revels in girls, glamour, and drugs. Chas is not into any of this, but plays the part, so he can stay hidden from the law. Holed up in the isolated confines of a small bungalow, Turner and Chas commiserate, and they both begin to realize that their lives are more similar than different—more together than apart. As the lines begin to blur, so do the men’s identities, in a fascinating journey into the nature of individuality that plays like a colorful version of Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, filled with music, dream imagery, and sex. An alluring cult classic, Performance must be experienced to be believed.

This show could only happen right here, right now, right on. A motley crew of artists – media professionals, educators, & assorted ne’er-do-wells – running amuck with old school 35mm movie film leaders to make handmade motion graphics loops (in recent workshops right here on yon historic Capitol Theater stage!), which are then professionally projected live onto our humongous silver screen, in unparalleled brightness and clarity (none of that pesky camera photo emulsion to block out the glorious light!). To accompany this transubstantiating visual barrage, we accept nothing less than the incomparable audio stylings of legendary Peter Randlette. Guaranteed never seen before and 100% unrepeatable. We depend on you to bear animated witness.

2015 / Switzerland, Germany, US / 110 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Nicolas Steiner Print Source: Oscilloscope Laboratories

Above and Below delves into the lives of people living outside the margins of traditional society. April, a former soldier, wanders the remote and rocky slopes of Utah in a spacesuit—part of a program attempting to create a future mission to Mars. Rick and Cindy live underground in the storm drains below Las Vegas, sketching out a normal life before each oncoming rainstorm washes it away. David, who resides in the desert outside a small California town, forms messages to God out of assorted refuse found on the sandy plain. Each subject illustrates their experiences in their own words, in a poetic, intersecting collage, as dreams of the starry skies merge into comforting, subterranean darkness. A surreal journey into lives on the fringe, Above and Below feels like sci-fi, but it’s real life. Peter DeBruge of Variety says it “ranks among the year’s most remarkable cinematic discoveries.”

The Nude Area 2014 / Netherlands, Poland / 80 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Urszula Antoniak Print Source: Reel Suspects

In The Nude Area, two girls from different cultures play out an intriguing game of seduction without words. Naomi, a Dutch girl from the fashionable Amsterdam-South quarter, first spots Fama, an Arabic girl from the immigrant quarter, at the sauna. As each becomes intrigued with the other, and they eye each other in places they both frequent, a mild flirtation begins. Fama works as a waitress and Naomi seems well enough off not to work at all, but inequality doesn’t exist in love, as their detached infatuation builds into burning desire. Each subtly draws the other in, in a game of emotional cat and mouse that takes place over one summer. Bold, experimental, and unabashedly erotic, The Nude Area is a mesmerizing illustration of love, temptation, attraction, and dreams in cinematic form.

Lamb

2015 / US / 96 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Ross Partridge Print Source: The Orchard

In Lamb, two lost souls connect in an unconventional relationship. It all starts in a parking lot: a preteen girl, wearing high heels and a sweatshirt, asks a middle aged man for a cigarette on a dare from her friends. Surprisingly, he gives her a smoke, and they become acquainted. Tommie is eleven years old and her dismissive parents hardly care where she is. David is in his late 40’s and should know better, but he sees something in the girl that he can relate to. As their apprehensive bond develops, motives are naturally questioned. They meet in the parking lot after school. They keep each other company, as each clings to the other in their cold, stark realties. When he asks her to go on a road trip, and she agrees, the dynamic of their friendship changes, as they both must come to terms with the truth of the real world. Fred Scheck of the Hollywood Reporter calls Lamb “a deeply intriguing psychological drama that should inspire much spirited debate.”

Disconnected lives converge and find solace in the majestic act of travel on a train destined for a place in the world for everyone on board. Before Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, there was Angst—the hallmark of serial killer films. Originally released in 1983, this intense psychological thriller has rarely been seen, due to censoring and banishment in several countries. The story takes place in the mind of a psychopath. Just released from prison, he begins stalking a family of three, living in a secluded home. Audiences witness everything from his point of view, including his thoughts, which are illustrated by a disturbing voice-over. We are fully immersed in the mind of the killer, while he carries out his brutal crimes. Featuring an eerie atmosphere, creepy soundtrack, and innovative camerawork, the existence of Angst was a shadowy myth in genre circles until the notorious filmmaker, Gaspar Noé, revealed it to be a major influence in his work. Olympia Food Co-op presents Documentary

2015 / US / 76 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Anne Bogart, Holly Morris Print Source: Anne Bogart and Holly Morris

In the radioactive Dead Zone surrounding the Chernobyl Reactor No. 4, a defiant community of women scratches out an existence on some of the most toxic land on Earth. They share this hauntingly beautiful but lethal landscape with an assortment of interlopers—scientists, soldiers, and even ‘stalkers’—young thrill-seekers who sneak in to pursue post-apocalyptic video game-inspired fantasies. Why the film’s central characters chose to return after the disaster, defying the authorities and endangering their health, The Babushkas of Chernobyl is a remarkable tale about the pull of home, the healing power of shaping one’s destiny, and the subjective nature of risk. Like the wolves, moose, wild boar, and other wildlife not seen for decades that have come back to the abandoned forests around Chernobyl, the women of the Exclusion Zone, too, have an extraordinary story of survival, and offer a dark yet strangely affirming portrait of life post-apocalypse.

Winner of a Special Jury prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, (T)error is the first documentary to place filmmakers on the ground during an active FBI counterterrorism sting operation. Through the perspective of "Shariff", a 63-year-old black revolutionary turned informant, viewers get an unfiltered glimpse of the government's counterterrorism tactics and the murky justifications behind them, exposing the details of what agents are forced to endure to carry out their dubious missions, all in the name of an increasingly vague cause. As we get to know “Shariff,” we begin to question his motives as he is drawn deeper into the world of uncertain accusations and blame being played out in the name of national security. Tension filled, stark and controversial, (T)error illuminates the fragile relationships between the individual and America’s surveillance state, and asks who is watching the watchers.

Capricorn One Action / Thriller

1978 / US, UK / 123 minutes / Format: 16mm Directed by: Peter Hyams Cast: Elliott Gould, James Brolin, Brenda Vaccaro...and many more! Print Source: Warner Brothers

Conspiracy thrillers were a hallmark of 1970’s cinema, but it was Capricorn One that heralded the era of government cover-up in the space age. Capricorn One is the USA’s first manned mission to Mars. Backed by various multi-million dollar corporations, it promises to open a whole new realm to the capitalist state, as well as build the morale of a country that has become jaded by trips to the moon. NASA has selected three men (Sam Waterston, James Brolin and O.J. Simpson) for this harrowing journey. As the launch grows closer, suspicions mount among the astronauts—especially when they end up being secretly transported to a Mars-looking soundstage, and are forced to perform fake, spacey antics for news cameras. Things become even stranger in this twisty tale of government corruption and corporate greed that is as entertaining as it is bizarre.

Manieggs:

Revenge of the Hard Egg Comedy / Adult Animation 2014 / Hungary / 90 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Zoltán Miklósy Print Source: Reel Suspects

Manieggs is a strangely ingenious animated comedy from Hungary that takes on American action film convention, and places it in a world where men are eggs and cinematic formula is ripe for parody. It takes place in a generic US city, where Johnny Cupido and his friend, Harry, have just been released from a two week prison sentence for a crime they did not commit. Their mission: revenge. Together they delve into the crime-ridden underworld to track down those responsible for getting them locked up. Their journey takes them into the depths of American action film cliché, where various gangs, from the mob to Yakuza, fight for imagined territory and virtually everything and everyone explodes or can be killed at any moment. A clever homage, as well as a pointed critique of by-the-numbers Hollywood blockbusters, Manieggs is so funny and weird that you’ll wonder, “How could I have not known about this?!” Please note: This film contains adult language. Short: Detectives of Noir Town Directed by: Andrew Chambers / 2015 / Australia / 7 minutes / digital file In a town where people and puppets walk the streets, a puppet detective is on the case of his missing uncle, but he faces competition from every man, woman, and dummy wanting to be named Noir Town’s top detective.

Bota

2015 / UK, Romania, Germany / in Romanian with English subtitles / 78 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Ilinca Calugareanu Print Source: Vernon Films

2014 / Albania, Italy, France / in Albanian with English subtitles / 104 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Iris Elezi, Thomas Logoreci Print Source: Thomas Logoreci

In 1980s Romania, a VHS player cost as much as a car and American action films were a symbol of freedom. The focus of the documentary is Irina Nistor, a young woman working in the state censor’s office, who gets an offer from a co-worker who deals in bootleg videotapes on the sly. Through their partnership, she translates over a thousand films into the Romanian language, giving access to anyone with the right connections a window into to the American way of life as illustrated by Sly Stallone and Purple Rain. Through flawless reenactments and witness accounts, we see how the forbidden allure of American films equalled dissent in the Soviet era, as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris weren’t just overexposed, cheesy action stars; they were the forbidden fruit that would spark a world-changing revolution.

In Bota, Albania's official submission for the Best Foreign Film Oscar, contemporary lives unfold while surrounded by the past. On the edge of a haunted swamp lies an isolated village where citizens were once exiled during communist rule. Bota is a café located on the outskirts of the desolate territory. Within its confines life plays out: Beni is the owner and will do anything to make it into the big time. He’s also having an affair with his employee, Nora, who envisions a future together even though he has a wife. Meanwhile, July is saving her pennies to move to the capital, but worries about her ailing grandmother. As road construction moves closer, the future looms. Featuring beautiful cinematography and a soundtrack of Albania’s forgotten Tango music, Bota is a lyrical and absorbing portrait of modern lives lived under the shadows of what once was. Join us for Q&A with the filmmaker after the screening!

Der Bunker NW Premiere! Comedy

2015 / Germany / in German with English subtitles / 85 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Nikias Chryssos Print Source: Artsploitation

The comedy Der Bunker is a strange fairy tale about a student who ends up lodging with a peculiar family. The student thinks he’s answering an ad for a room with a waterfront view, so he can finish his studies in solitude. Instead, he gets a windowless hovel in a basement-like bunker deep in the forest. If that isn’t bad enough, the house’s owners insist on saddling him with the duty of homeschooling their 8-year-old son, Klaus, who is being groomed for a crazy, unrealistic goal. The fact that Klaus looks to be about 30, with a bowl haircut, isn’t to be questioned either. Why the student stays is just as much a mystery, as events careen out of control, but in a weirdly ordinary way that can only be called transfixing. Bizarrely funny and thought provoking, Der Bunker is a story of parenting gone wildly awry that plays out like an episode of The Twilight Zone as directed by David Lynch.

Sci-fi

2014 / US, Italy / 91 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Mark Shuman Print Source: Mark Shuman If

The Brainwashing of My Dad explores modern-day conservative media and its role in our society. Filmmaker Jen Senko was drawn to this subject when she noticed her dad beginning to embrace right-wing ideas after a road trip. Shortly after, Fox News became a constant presence on her parents’ television—and her dad’s outlook became bitter and angry. When Jen mentioned his behavior to others, she realized she was not alone. The cult of Fox News, and inflammatory right-wing media, spread its poisonous tentacles throughout the country, corrupting seniors who were vulnerable to its negative message. This smart and entertaining documentary explores this phenomena, breaking down the media machine to expose exactly how it works, and why. Don’t miss this WORK IN PROGRESS EDITION, along with a Skype interview with Jen Senko, after the film. Your input can help make a great film even better!

th

you were a fan of “alternative” radio in the ‘90s, you’ll probably remember the incredibly unique Boston trio Morphine (Mark Sandman, Dana Colley, and Jerome Deupree), whose “low rock” sound was comprised of drums, baritone sax, a two-string slide bass, and Sandman’s deep, rumbling vocals. Formed in 1989, the band experienced the ‘90s phenomenon of indie-to-major label, local fame-to-international acclaim, gradually creating a die-hard fan base of those who had seen them live. Tragically, in 1999 while onstage in Italy, Sandman suffered a heart attack and died, after which the surviving members disbanded. In Morphine: Journey of Dreams, Austin, TX club owner and friend of the band, Mark Shuman, has used the full access he received to the band’s audio, video, and written archives to create a loving tribute. Focusing more on the band members and those who knew them well than on testaments from fellow musicians (although Henry Rollins and the late Joe Strummer are both included), the film presents a curated assortment of live performances throughout the band’s 10-year run. Don’t miss this chance to be (re)introduced to this one-of-a-kind group!

2015 / Canada, New Zealand / 93 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: François Simard, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell Print Source: Epic Pictures

An homage to 1980’s cinema, Turbo Kid is a post-apocalyptic teenaged dream with the perfect keyboard soundtrack. The year is 1997: the Earth has become a wasteland due to destructive acid rain. Survivors subsist in the remnants of civilization, and The Kid spends his days scavenging bunkers and reading comics featuring his favorite superhero, Turbo Rider. The world now revolves around the lack of water—everyone wants it, no one has it—except for Zeus (Michael Ironside), who rules over the meager supply with a steel fist. When The Kid meets a sprite-like girl with pink hair named Apple, she encourages him to embrace his inner Turbo Man, and defeat the evil, water-hoarding warlord. And so he does—as The Kid and friends set out on an amazing adventure full of crazy fights, BMX bike chases, and totally extreme special effects.

ALL FREAKIN' NIGHT Shock Waves The Beyond

1981 / Italy / 87 minutes / Format: 35mm Directed by: Lucio Fulci Print Source: Grindhouse Releasing

Q: The Winged Serpent

Italian director Lucio Fulci’s films are a surreal journey into a world of ultra gore, nightmare imagery, claustrophobic atmosphere, and over-the-top violence, all wrapped in a surreal soundtrack meant to drown us in a questionable reality. Though this doesn't come close to describing the sheer craziness of The Beyond, thought to be Fulci's disturbing masterpiece. In New Orleans, an old hotel with a storied past is inherited by a woman named Liza, who has plans to renovate. Little does she know that the hotel stands on one of the seven doors to Hell. When plans go forward and the door is disturbed, bizarre activity begins to plague the area. Slo-mo spiders, creepy little girls, rabid dogs, eye-popping deaths, and much, much more converge in a deluge of violent weirdness, as the vulnerable city becomes awash in the awakened curse meant to take it down forever.

Q: The Winged Serpent is a monster movie that takes place in New York City. What is that giant, bird-shaped shadow that sometimes covers the sun? Could it be the cause of the spontaneous beheadings plaguing the city? Or could it be the origin of the rash of rooftop abductions that have struck terror into oblivious NYC citizens? Official investigations have turned up nothing. Only when a screwed-up ex-con piano player runs from the law and straight into a giant, flying lizard's rooftop nest is its actual existence proven. Q is a mythical Aztec monster brought to life to cause havoc in the stony city it now calls home—in the Chrysler building, nonetheless. When the ex-con decides to use his exclusive knowledge to blackmail the law, he may be smart, or he may be the monster's next meal. Funny, scary, and really, really weird, Q: The Winged Serpent is a jaded and bloody exploitation classic full of deadpan humor and severed limbs.

In Shock Waves, Nazi super soldiers dwell on the ocean floor waiting to destroy humankind. When a charter boat picks up a distressed woman floating in the surf with a crazy story to tell about an island, there's nothing else to do than investigate—especially after they run out of fuel off the island's shore. Upon landing, they find a deserted hotel and a deluded German scientist, who tells of the Totenkorps: a sect of the Nazi SS created from the worst of society and trained to kill, kill, kill. But they couldn't still be around... Or could they? The dim boat passengers are skeptical, until they're being picked off one by one by pasty white, undead thugs in moldy goggles. They are super strong, crafty, and stealthy. Only one thing can stop them—and it's not what you think. A classic in the Nazi zombie genre, Shock Waves will make you question history and the evil men are capable of.

Who Can Kill a Child? 1976 / Spain / 112 minutes / Format: 35mm Directed by: Narciso Ibáñez Serrador Print Source: 35mm film

Although mostly unheard-of, Who Can Kill a Child? is considered the very best Spanish horror film ever made. It takes place on an island—an island where kids kill. An English couple, looking for a secluded vacation spot, can't resist returning to the majestic island of Almanzora. Conjuring pleasant memories, the couple arrives in a small boat and is left to fend for themselves. But where is everyone? There are only children by the beach and playing games in a courtyard. As the couple wanders further into the small village, no adults can be found—only the electric air of shocking anticipation. When an old man appears to give warning and succumbs to a gruesome fate, the couple realizes that they're next—as the kids have taken their revenge, and all adults are now their prey. Probably the very best 'killer kid' movie ever, Who Can Kill a Child? is a wonderfully disturbing journey into the horrible.

Super gory, funny, crazy, and scary, director Stuart Gordon's Re- Animator is arguably the very best H.P. Lovecraft adaptation put on film. Herbert West is a medical student with ambition. He spends his time at Arkham University studying the human body—and ways to defeat death. And he's almost got it! Almost. When he ends up renting a room at a boarding house, Herbert finds the basement is the perfect spot to hone his new discovery—a glowing, green solution meant to inject life back into cadavers. And it almost works—almost. The only problem is that everyone he brings back to life ends up a raving, brainless fiend out for blood. But he's working on it! He's making progress. He's dragged his unwitting roommate Dan into his scheme. As Herbert's experiments become more elaborate, so does the trouble he gets into—because everyone knows: it's impossible to cheat death—it will always catch up to the living eventually.

The Invitation

1958 / Italy, France / 97 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Roberto Rossellini Print Source: Janus Films

2015 / US / 100 minutes / Format: DCP Directed by: Karyn Kusama Print Source: Drafthouse Films

Roberto Rossellini’s Journey to Italy is a benchmark in cinema, although seldom seen. Embroiled in controversy upon its release, due to industry gossip surrounding an affair between the director and its star, Ingrid Bergman, it was quietly pulled from theaters. The introspective story involves Katherine (Bergman) and Alexander Joyce: married for eight years, they’re waking up to the reality that they no longer share passion for each other. When fate brings them an opportunity to travel to Naples, instead of vacationing together, they go their separate ways. Katherine takes in the atmosphere of the city and the countryside, while Alexander drinks himself into oblivion and peruses women. While apart, they both learn about themselves and their place in the world. Considered a masterpiece of Italian cinema, Journey to Italy is a heartrending work of emotion and spirituality in the guise of an existential travelogue.

In the SXSW Film Festival favorite, The Invitation, an intense and unpredictable story of loss and redemption plays out one evening over dinner. When Will and Kira are invited to a dinner party, things seem normal… until they’re not. David and Eden have asked the couple over, along with some other friends, not just to partake of food and wine, but to hawk an alternative agenda. If this isn’t awkward enough, Will begins to suspect other underlying motives in the friendly couple’s banter. And he can’t quite trust anyone, especially since he knows Eden so well—his ex-wife who he hasn’t seen in the last two years. As the night stretches on, Will’s paranoia grows more acute, as he suspects the worst in a tense situation that may be of his own making. An expertly paced thriller that constantly surprises, The Invitation will leave you guessing until the shocking end.

HISTORY OF THE CAPITOL THEATER

Original owners E.A. Zabel and William Wilson were prominent purveyors of family entertainment in Olympia since 1909. The Capitol Theater, built in 1924, was the crowning glory of a succession of local theaters owned by Zabel. The two commissioned local architect Joseph Wohleb to design a “monument to amusement lovers in Olympia,” a luxurious “picture palace” that was designed for orchestras to accompany silent films. On October 7th, 1924, the Capitol Theater opened its doors to an audience of over one thousand people who came for an evening

of festive entertainment including organ music, song, dance, movies, and community networking. For the next half century, the Zabel family operated the theater. The

theater was used primarily as a film venue and as a home for vaudeville. In the early days, many films premiered here, including Tugboat Annie, Ring of Fire, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, as well as many performances by famous musicians and singers like Judy Garland. The theater originally had two manual Smith theater pipe organs installed in 1926. According to records, the organs were moved to Shoreline, WA in 1959 and were eventually broken up for parts and sold to a man in Twin Falls, ID.

Built in the Mission Revival/Beaux Arts style, the building features glazed terra cotta and circular leaded art glass insets depicting the Greek muses designed by Northwest glass artist Raymond Nyson. Terra cotta masks and the Greek mythological hippocamps designed by Polish illustrator and mask maker W.T. Benda flank the backlit stained glass. The interior above the massive stage was crested with a large “C” which you can still see today, also depicted carved golden angels playing trumpets and harps. Unfortunately, a fire in 1937 caused extensive damage, and much of the interior was removed and replaced.

ABOUT THE OLYMPIA FILM SOCIETY

The Olympia Film Society (OFS) was founded in 1980 by a local group of film enthusiasts who sought to share their love of cinematic art with the community. Now, more than thirty years later and more than 200 volunteers, OFS has grown to become a beloved organization to film, music, and art lovers, and is regarded as the première presenter of independent and underrepresented art in the South Sound community. OFS is the sole caretaker of the Capitol Theater. OFS takes pride in preserving the historical purpose of the theater through a variety of programming. Although the “F” stands for film, OFS is known for producing unique, award winning concerts and performances by international, national, and local musicians and performers. VOLUNTEERS We depend upon the efforts of the OFS volunteer community - some 200 active, community minded cinephiles who give their time in service of film, music and art. The spirit of volunteerism remains strong and vibrant at OFS! We are seeing new faces weekly, and long time volunteers are evolving their roles through cross training and taking on leadership duties that help to support the staff in their daily work. Olympia is a town that chooses to be more spectacular than mere demographics and economics would suggest it could be. OFS volunteers help secure the Capitol Theater for future generations of Olympians with their selfless labor and dedication! FILM Throughout the year, our weekly film series showcases independent, popular, and local films that engage our community in dialogue about social, economic, and cultural ideas and issues from around the world. Sometimes it’s just about pure fun and escape. You can enjoy animated family-friendly titles (Kids Club), revival movies (Silver Screenings) silent films with live musical accompaniment (Silents!), and cult classics (Fright Club). In addition to revival movies, OFS programs new and independent movies along with mini festivals, and the Annual Olympia Film Festival. Many of these events emphasize interactive and educational opportunities through panel discussions where viewers could share ideas and ask questions of the filmmakers and guests. MUSIC All year long you can expect world-class talent on our stage. Experience music in an intimate setting with quality sound in an exciting atmosphere! OFS partner’s with local and national not for profit organizations and local performance groups and creates several annual award winning events, including Night of the Living Tribute Bands and Repeal Prohibition Celebration, and an red carpet Oscar Party that pack the house. Illustrious Oly Kaz Photography acts who have graced our stage include Lucinda Williams, Neko Case, Cat Power, Mudhoney, Jonathan Richman, Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, Wanda Jackson, Greg Brown, Built to Spill, White Stripes, Dashboard Confessionals, Bright Eyes, Gillian Welch, Iris Dement, John Doe, Hari Kondabolu, Sandra Bernhard, Mike Watt, Indigo Girls, and many more local and regional bands and performers. ART The Mezzanine Art Space produces programs that include art receptions, silent auctions, coloring books, and special events like Duck the Malls; our annual arts and crafts Holiday Bazaar. OFS showcases the work of over 50 local and regional talented visual artists annually in our Mezzanine Art Space located on the second floor of the Capitol Theater.
