Alta Valtellina Region in the Means of Olympic Legacy

Livigno has everything it takes to host the Olympics, lots of snow, beautiful slopes, good food, and everything is concentrated in the same area with connections that make reaching the different locations really easy.

Alta Valtellina is the higher part of the Valtellina Region of Sondrio province, where the Alps start to show peaks. Valtellina Valley is peculiar for its unique culture in the region and the agricultural production through many vineyards and apple fields. Several castles on top of these mountains are the legacy of this ancient production fields. What the region means for the olympics? The International Olympic commision decided to hold the Olympic games venue in Livigno and Bormio, parts of the Alta Valtellina region. The Stelvio slope in Bormio for Alpine skiing is one of the most spectacular , technical and difficult tracks in the world. The Region of Lombardy has invested heavily in Livigno, regardless of the Olympics, and will continue to do so in the mountain areas that make up 40% of the territory, as well as in Valtellina and Valchiavenna. The ongoing process of faster and safer infrastructural connections between Valtellina and Milan is incredibly useful for hosting the events. What the region means for our olympics strategy and post olympics legacy? The Alpine Region is a fragile part of the Italian culture and landscape, such as depopulation of the mountain areas. Slowly new ideas to bring population for sports and leisure purposes to the Alps by the municipalities have been in action for a long time. The Winter Olympics 2026 will be a trigger these ideas for a new way of living in these territories. Sustainable infrastructures, improved alternatives for new modes of transport, slow tourism and slow mobility are some of the most important infrastructural investments towards the games and its legacy.

Alta Valtellina has an existing railway line starting from Milano to Tirano. The idea is to continue the railways from Tirano to Bormio forming a link between all the cities from Milano. This would help in promoting various skiing, cycling, mountain biking, trekking and site seeing activities in the Alps of the Alta Valtellina. At the same time, the train line is carefully designed taking into consideration the East and West facing slopes of the valley in order not to destroy a major part of the vineyards or the apple fields present. The existing biking path along the river Adda will be made continous to close the missing links and provide a stressfree slow mobility option to bikers. The bike route will allow users to experience the valley with various stop points including infrastructures like small rest spaces, sleeping cabins, parking areas and also chargers for electric bikes to promote sustainable tourism. These stop points are provided at proper distances throughout the valley from Tirano to Bormio. Linking various hiking, camping and sight-seeing activities will help users to perceive and experience the alps through all the senses of the human body. The stop points are positioned and designed according to various scenic potentials. Thus, catogorised into short stops, long stops and over night stop points. The short stops will have resting spaces and recharging areas for bikes for 1-2 hours. Long stops allow the user to rest/sleep for few hours after a long journey and then continue. Overnight stops are included on higher parts of the valley in between the forest areas for a more wilder experience of nature. A viewing tower is designed to enjoy views of the valley from above. Common sitting spaces will help users coming from different places to socialize.

The idea is to create several infrastructural stop points for the existing cycle path along the river Adda from Milano to Bormio and improving connections to several historical castles, lakes, national parks along the way for users to enjoy. This inturn would help increase tourism in all the cities of the Alta Valtellina region and help in populating these historical small towns with various activities.

The Alta Valtellina valley starts becoming narrower starting from Tirano until Aquilone and then widening back again while entering Bormio. The proposed train line is seen on the East slope of the valley which is positioned over ground in between the dense forest areas. The experience will of first enjoying the view of the plains from Milano to Tirano and then travelling high up the mountain in between the green trees.

Coming from the several sections that showed the perception of mobility in the valley, 3 sections from 3 cities are chosen for showing the topographical features and different charactheristics along the valley. These 3 sections are where many interesting features are concentrated in a close distance at the both sides of river valley.

Aquilone is one of the most narrow parts of Valtellina Valley, where the two sides are closer and the slopes are steep. The area suffered from a serious landslide disaster in the past and the effects are still visible and memorable. The section includes the Aquilone memorial, widened river bed, proposed railways and the cabins camp.

The new rail connection from Tirano to Bormio creates a necessity also for a new end rail station in Bormio. For that purpose the critical location of arrival point of the ski slopes will serve as a new hub to Valtellina Valley. The importance of a new hub also arises with the existing ski lift station and the bus terminal that is the link between Bormio and Livigno, the two olympic cities of Valtellina.
