letter from the chair The future of the performing arts shines bright as O-pa continues to grow. Now more than ever, it is evident we are a leading destination for the performing arts. During the 2018/2019 Season, we welcomed more than 500,000 visitors to our events. We inspired patrons through the world’s most celebrated artists and productions, including the much-anticipated Broadway hit, HAMILTON. Our spectacular venues, the Orpheum Theater and Holland Performing Arts Center, ranked high nationally for ticket sales this season. We touched the lives of 102,000 adults and students through our Education and Community Engagement programs, which reach across the state. On behalf of the board of directors, I am grateful to everyone who has attended, performed, volunteered, donated, and worked to contribute to this success. You make these programs and successes possible and we have much more ahead. Going forward, we will continue to expand the reach of our programs, care for the community’s beloved venues, and present top touring talent on our stages and beyond. We look forward to seeing you at our performances and events. Thank you for your support and patronage.
letter from the president The 2018/2019 Season is one to remember. The year was filled with exciting and inspiring performances by today’s most talented artists and ensembles, it concluded with the show we’d all been waiting for – HAMILTON. We launched two new concert series, the Mammel Courtyard Concerts and Summer Sounds at Highlander, to broaden our offerings and audiences. Beyond the stage, the season truly showcased the breadth of our organization’s mission and all we bring to this community. We touch lives through the arts on our stages inside and outside the four walls of the Orpheum Theater and Holland Center. We’ve taken extraordinary experiences that engage, connect and inspire out into the community and across the region. Our Education and Community Engagement activities continue to expand with 10 middle schools added to our Nebraska High School Theater Academy. The program now reaches 8,000 students across the state. We launched a Jazz Academy for middle school students, welcomed Broadway star Ray Mercer as our artist in residence for dance and grew our signature partnerships Disney Musicals in Schools and Musical Explorers. All of this was made possible thanks to our donors, arts partners, resident companies, the community, and most importantly, our board of directors, staff and volunteers. They made the 2018/2019 season a huge success. Join us as we continue to carry our successes into the future!

Nebraska High School Theater Academy reaches 80 schools Presented in partnership with the Broadway League, this program celebrates theater while connecting schools to Broadway resources. The annual showcase was hosted in 2019 by Omaha native Q. Smith, who is currently in the COME FROM AWAY Broadway company.

Hannah-Kate Kinney watched countless stars perform on the Orpheum Theater stage growing up, and by the time she was 17, she was shining on that very stage herself. Hannah-Kate, a student at Westside High School, worked as a student reporter at this year’s Nebraska High School Theater Academy Showcase and went on to win the Jimmy Awards National Student Reporter search.

mission moment To be selected as a national student reporter, candidates were required to film a video for social media, and the one with the most shares would be on their way to the Jimmy Awards! Hannah-Kate received over 25,000 views and was a social media sensation. “Everything that followed was a whirlwind,” she said. Hannah-Kate traveled to New York City for the Jimmy Awards, a dream come true for a student with dual passions for theater and reporting. She met with the director of Social Media and Creative Strategy at Playbill, interviewed Broadway star Ben Platt and held red-carpet conversations with other performers. “I learned so much through NHSTA, and I have been eager to share those reflections through my own social media postings. Students gain so much through involvement with the arts,” Hannah-Kate said. “I hope to inspire other students to get involved. I really believe that there is something for everyone. I will always be grateful for the opportunities that I have gained through Omaha Performing Arts!”
Nearly 3,800 students and adults learned from professional artists Touring artists led workshops and provided preprofessional training in dance, jazz, theater and more. Highlights include a tap dance workshop with Dorrance Dance, a ballet master class with Russian National Ballet and community workshops with Broadway choreographer Ray Mercer.

Launch of Jazz Academy This free middle school program offers in-school music clinics, teacher jazz education workshops and performance opportunities for students.

Jazz on the Green at Midtown Crossing More than 53,300 people attended Jazz on the Green at Midtown Crossing, our six-week free outdoor concert series.
Kids’ Night on Broadway at SCHOOL OF ROCK Children experienced the magic of live theater during Kids’ Night on Broadway. Before the performance, they made crafts and explored instruments with our community partners, Omaha Girls Rock and Omaha School of Rock.
Cultural Inclusion Summit with Broadway’s COME FROM AWAY Community members across industries participated in professional development sessions exploring topics such as intentional inclusion and multiculturalism in the workplace.

Community Engagement Highlights
Heroes’ Night at Disney’s ALADDIN We provided tickets for more than 200 community members from Blue Star families, Gold Star families, and TAPS, and recognized active military and veterans at the show.

Jazz Summit connects students with touring artists Middle and high school jazz musicians honed their skills with Jamison Ross and Bria Skonberg of Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour. In a hands-on workshop, the artists gave tips on focus and building relationships within a band.
“We took our niece to WeBop® and she had a glorious time. …This program allowed her to be able to learn more about it, express herself, nurture her love of Jazz and to give us a chance to share with her a love of ours.”
WeBop® This season, 144 children ages 2-5 and their parents or guardians explored jazz music together. Off-site classes were also held in partnership with Seventy Five North and Gomez Heritage Elementary School.
