WHO ARE THE

FACES OMAHA of

F

ACES OF OMAHA is an annual sponsored

publication that introduces a variety of “faces,” local industry leaders and experts, to the community. This exclusive publication was carefully cultivated, so only one person and company per business category is invited to participate.

In the publishing industry, this sort of publication is known as “native advertising.” Native advertising is a unique form of sponsored content produced by editorial staff in conjunction with advertisers. The end result is an enjoyable book that has value to both the readers and advertisers.

Everyone featured in the book is truly the “face” of their field. Our sales team spent considerable time cultivating this list. The following pages introduce more than 100 people and companies, the leaders in their respective areas of expertise, who stand ready to serve their community.

T’S ABOUT THE COMMUNITY , AND OMAHA IS A GREAT COMMUNITY.”

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert understands this concept well. In her second term as Mayor of Omaha, Stothert places high priority on public safety, managing the city budget, job growth and economic development, and improving the taxpayer experience. Serving people is Stothert’s passion. “The most satisfying part of my job is helping people solve the problems that affect their quality of life,” says Mayor Stothert. Whether taking calls on the Mayor’s Hotline, meeting people at their front door, or answering questions at the 35 Town Hall meetings she has held, providing excellent customer service at all levels of city government is always the goal. Stothert recognizes that there are many great faces in our city. These Faces work in every industry and she is pleased that so many industries in the area are represented throughout this book. “It is my pleasure to introduce to you these Faces—the leaders, the workers, the industry experts,” Stothert says. We offer big bank benefits at a localized service level that’s a little faster, a little more high-touch. If you apply for a loan, we’ll get you an answer quicker than most other banks.”

largest local banks. That same year, ACCESSbank made its first acquisition: Bank of Nebraska, which was about half its size. “It was a pretty big acquisition for our company,” Pat remarks. ACCESSbank offers a diverse and competitive suite of products and services, including treasury management products and remote deposits. “We’re trying to help businesses succeed,” Pat explains. “If we can do that, we know that we’ll be successful as a bank.”

Founded in 2007 with a staff of 12, today ACCESSbank has more than 110 employees. The bank has grown about 20 percent per year and in 2017 made the Omaha World-Herald’s list of the 10

Featuring a killer bloody mary and not to miss rueben, the grill is open later than most restaurants, so you can eat before, during and after the game. “People used to show up an hour early for Husker games,” says Tim Addison, owner of Addy’s Sports Bar and Grill. “Now they come two hours early to make sure they get a table. We play the fight songs, give out prizes, and have food and beer specials.”

Customers often compliment Tim on the excellent service at Addy’s. “We have some of the best employees in Omaha,” he says. Tim and his wife, Megan, are active volunteers who support charities and fundraisers. “Omaha has taken very good care of us, so we feel like we need to give back to the community,” he explains, “And giving back to the community is one of our biggest accomplishments.”  ADDY’S SPORTS BAR & GRILL 14110 S ST., OMAHA, NE 68137 | 402.991.2663 1515 S. 204TH ST. value by a local, family-owned business—this is what makes Aksarben Cinema shine among its competitors. Guests enjoy the Lux Lounger seating, making movie watching just as comfortable—if not more so—as watching a movie at home, but with the excitement that comes with watching a movie on the big screen. Reserved seating allows guests to select their favorite spot in the theater easily, and weekly specials ensure guests get a real value for their money. It’s extraordinary that Omaha’s favorite cinema is owned and operated by a local family. “We’re family owned, and that’s a rarity in this industry,” says Bill

Barstow, owner. He adds that their ability to compete alongside the conglomerate theaters in town points to Aksarben Cinema’s value, convenience, and connection with the Omaha community. No other theater consistently offers the types of promotions and rewards as Aksarben Cinema, so it’s no wonder this locally-owned theater continues to thrive despite heavy competition. STABLISHED IN 1918, All Makes

According to Kavich, clients of All Makes appreciate being able to select design solutions from a large number of vendors. “As our company’s name suggests, we blend all price points, all styles, and all trends from a large variety of manufacturers,” Kavich says. “By contrast, many of our competitors represent just one manufacturer.”

Kavich explains, “In a town with low unemployment, companies need to look sharp and be current with the trends to attract good people.”

In addition to Omaha, All Makes has showrooms in Lincoln and Kearney as well as Des Moines.

has spent 100 years earning the trust of multiple generations of business owners in Omaha and beyond. CEO Jeff Kavich and CFO Amee Zetzman, great-grandchildren of the company’s founder, understand the bottom-line value of creating an up-to-date, appealing business environment.

Zetzman adds, “Business owners count on us to help them attract and retain employees. We’ve taken local employers on tours of other spaces so they can get up to speed on the latest design trends.”

OUSEHOLD APPLIANCES ARE smarter than ever, and they need smart technicians to repair them.

“We aren’t just fixing mechanical problems these days,” explains Tim Brockhouse, owner of Andy’s Appliance Repair. “The newest appliances are hooked up to the internet, so there’s networking involved. Our techs receive ongoing training to stay current with the latest developments.” Family owned and operated since 1971, Andy’s Appliance Repair provides expert service on all types of household appliances and virtually all brand names. The company uses only manufacturer certified (OEM) parts obtained through approved distribution

channels, never cheaper after-market parts. Customers receive a full one-year parts and labor warranty on every repair job. Andy’s service area includes Omaha, Lincoln, and many surrounding communities in eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Repairs can be scheduled on the company’s website or over the phone. “The day before the appointment, we’ll send you a confirmation email with the tech’s picture on it so you’ll know who’s going to show up at your door the next day,” Brockhouse remarks. “Other companies don’t do that.” ANDY’S APPLIANCE REPAIR 6536 S. 118TH ST. 402.614.8131 ANDYSAPPLIANCE.NET

N 2005, JEFF Grewe faced a crucial

decision: either finish college or devote his energy to the tree service business he had just started. With only a few credits short of graduating, he chose the tree service and never looked back. It was immediately apparent that Jeff had an aptitude for climbing trees and found joy in the mastery of making trees beautiful. With just a handsaw and a ladder, Arbor Aesthetics was born. Jeff’s operation remained small for many years while he gained experience and sought formal training in arboriculture. Three years ago, he met and married Amy. “It was like rocket fuel when she came aboard,” Jeff says. Amy’s graphic design skills and office management experience propelled the company forward, which has since then tripled in size.

|| 10 || Faces of Omaha 2018

Together, Amy and Jeff have created a company where employees are valued, with an emphasis on professionalism and a culture of safety, respect and camaraderie. “Our biggest passion in owning our business is helping our employees live better lives,” Jeff explains. “We take good care of our employees so they can take good care of our customers.” In addition to providing a comprehensive benefits package, the Grewes have cultivated a caring and harmonious work environment, helping their employees reach their full potential both at work and in their personal lives. have been the central focus of American Electronics since the company opened its doors in 1980. American Electronics does such a good job earning customer satisfaction that they were voted “Best of Omaha” in 2018. Their reputation for excellence attracted the attention of Atronic Alarms, a Kansas City provider of security systems. Atronic Alarms, which was founded in 1982, acquired American Electronics in May 2017. As the Omaha branch of Atronic Alarms, American Electronics has gained a new name while keeping the same office and employees. Dan Ward, Omaha branch manager, is the son of the founder of American Electronics.

According to Ward, Omaha customers will benefit from upgraded technology and improved response times. In addition to delivering better service to residential customers, the company is expanding its outreach to the commercial market with fire, access control and camera systems, along with traditional security systems. “We want to offer the same level of personalized service on the commercial side that we offer our residential clients,” Ward explains. ARKETING IS A VERY LARGE PART OF WHAT WE DO,”

says Shayne Fili, owner of Auction Solutions Inc. “Our job is to represent items to the best of our ability and market them to the largest audience possible. Whether it is online, live or simulcast auctions, we broadcast to the world.”

Auction Solutions maintains a partnership with Proxybid, an Omaha-based online auction service portal that hosts online auctions and screens buyers. The anonymity and convenience of online auctions means they can be completed in one day. In addition to conducting auctions, Auction Solutions also provides appraisal services for personal property.

When Fili opened in 1999, she specialized in household estate auctions and small consignments. The company’s focus has since shifted to business liquidations. “We’ve worked with many local and national banks, financial institutions, and bankruptcy courts to appraise and many times liquidate business assets,” Fili explains. “We conducted a large wine auction with 30,000 bottles of wine, and a large tent and rental company. With high numbers of buyers and competitive bidding, the return, for our clients, was above expectations.” AUCTION SOLUTIONS INC. 7811 MILITARY AVE., OMAHA, NE 68134 402.571.0393 AUCTIONSOLUTIONSINC.COM

EARLY 20 YEARS ago, the

importance of safe, off-leash play for dogs was a new concept set forth by dog experts. Bark Avenue owner Suzanne Wilke traveled to the East Coast to learn about this idea and returned to Omaha to open a daycare for dogs. “We really paved the way,” she says. What started as a one-room facility open on alternating days for small and big dogs quickly evolved into what is now a five-room space complete with four outdoor play areas. “We know dogs well,” says Wilke. “Dogs need rules and they like structure.” She further explains that dogs

make friends with other dogs at daycare and will get excited on days when they know they’ll see their friends. Dogs get plenty of interaction with each other under the watchful eyes of the staff. “We have consistent protocol,” says Michelle Vidlak, manager of the facility. “We take extreme preventative measures to ensure the dogs are safe and having a good time.” “Our staff is amazing and love what they do,” says Wilke. Batten Trailer Leasing to transport everything from steel beams to elephants. “We provided the trailers that hauled six elephants from the airport to the zoo,” remarks Ashley Batten, general manager. “Many of our customers are involved in the construction industry, and we also help with special events like the College World Series. We rent from one day to one year, so companies come to us when their trailer is in the shop or they need extra trailers.” Ashley’s father, Blaine Batten, started the company in the mid-’80s after two decades in the trucking industry. In the early ’90s he moved the business to its

In addition to renting flatbed, lowboy, stepdeck, and van semitrailers for periods from one day to one year, Batten Trailer Leasing rents storage trailers. “The advantage of using our trailers versus a container or pod is that customers can easily move the trailer from one part of their parking lot to another,” Ashley notes. “No special equipment is required.”  BATTEN TRAILER LEASING 4511 S. 67TH ST. 402.339.1429 BATTENTRAILERLEASING.COM

More enjoys a solid reputation in the Omaha area. Burton consistently maintains a customer-first culture within the company. “The only way we can be customer service driven and provide the best service in town is to have our staff be the best,” says Mark Evans, president.

Drain technician Nick Schreck knew it was the company for him based on this reputation. “I always heard it was a great place to work for,” he says. “It’s family oriented for both employees and customers.”

|| 16 || Faces of Omaha 2018

Schreck adds that Burton places great importance upon friendly, experienced technicians. “They handpick candidates based on their experience.” It’s no wonder that a company that places so much emphasis on recruiting and retaining the most qualified employees thrives. Burton stresses integrity and honesty to their technicians, and they appreciate and honor the positive reputation they have built as a locally-owned company. Evans adds that Burton takes the time to “hire the best and train, train, train!”

Employee Dave Stafford agrees. Relatively new to the professional staff at Burton, he quickly realized that there is something different about Burton compared to other companies he’s worked with. “We always have the opportunity to learn something new,” he says. “I’ve worked for other companies and never had so many opportunities for training.”

N TODAY’S RAPIDLY CHANGING BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT, com-

Hayley Wells attributes the success of Capital Express to the business acumen of its founder and CEO, Monte O’Hara. “Monte is always prepared for changes that may happen in our industry, and when those changes happen he is quick to adapt,” says Wells, who is the company’s marketing director and O’Hara’s daughter. “He has put in place an amazing team of talented individuals who he can rely on to implement any changes the company might need to make.” O’Hara and his wife, Debra, started their company in 1987 with only two vehicles.

“Today Capital Express has 26 brick-and-mortar locations in nine states,” says Mollie Riddle, who is the company’s CIO and executive account director as well as Monte’s sister. Capital Express provides logistical solutions to clients in a wide range of industries, including health care, financial, e-commerce, manufacturing, and automotive companies. “We are able to take a customer’s logistical needs and create customized solutions to meet those needs,” Wells explains. T THE END OF THE DAY, The Lund

Company is a real estate company. Simply put, they manage, lease, and sell properties. However, the reason they’ve been successful is that they don’t consider themselves a “bricks and mortar” company. They are about people. People living, working, and playing in their properties. When looking through this lens at commercial real estate, it leads one to do things a little differently. “Our people are constantly seeking ways to impact people.” That leads to things like an in-house customer care department, a communication system that will send text alerts to people in their buildings, and relationships with owners beyond building management.

“That’s the thrill of our business and our industry,” says Jason Fisher, president of Cushman & Wakefield/The Lund Company. There are thousands of people in Lund properties every single day. It’s a privilege they don’t take lightly and makes them better at what they do and more purposeful about the impact on the communities they serve. Fisher says, “I love our tagline: at the intersection of real estate and real life. That says it all.” CUSHMAN & WAKEFIELD/THE LUND COMPANY 450 REGENCY PARKWAY, NO. 200 OMAHA, NE 68114 402.393.8811 LUNDCO.COM

What Payne describes as an “outward growth” is simply proof of Cut Spike’s popularity in the Omaha area and beyond. They do things a little differently at Cut Spike. “We’re proud to make 100 percent of our whiskey in-house,” says Payne. “We’re the only one doing that in Nebraska.” Their premium hand-crafted

in a house or apartment has reached its capacity, or a person is transitioning between homes. And sometimes, like the company tagline “Where your stuff’s in our doghouse so you’re not,” space needs to be opened in a shared household. That tagline, along with the highly noticeable quips on the sign outside Dino’s Storage, such as “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,” are part of what people first notice about Dino’s.

Founder Dave Paladino says that whatever the reason— and no matter if the need is for a brief period or longterm—Dino’s Storage can provide a solution. Dino’s, founded in 1998, offers month-to-month indoor and outdoor self-storage across eight Omaha-area facilities, which also offer location-specific services from boxes and packing supplies to moving truck usage—complimentary or rental. HE HAPPINESS OF OUR CLIENTS is

our main driver,” says interior designer Elizabeth Monical.

Monical listens carefully to clients because she wants to understand how they live. If they’re building a home, she helps them communicate with the architect early in the project. “Architects tend to have a more logical outlook, while designers are more emotional. We understand that when people want to be in a space, it’s not just because it’s laid out well but because of how the windows are and how the furniture works and how much storage space there is.”

Monical grew up in a creative family and earned a B.S. from UNL’s Interior Design/Interior Architecture Program. She started her company in 2008 and has one full-time design assistant, Sarah Boggs. Their newest offering is styling services. Monical uses existing and new products to style the space before the customer decides what to purchase so the customer can see it all together. This saves customers the time and hassle of driving all over town or searching endless websites to find the perfect style for their design.  ELIZABETH MONICAL INTERIOR DESIGN 6601 S 81ST ST. solutions, premise cabling, and commercial electrical. “We have certified specialists in each division,” Koester notes. “So while my phone team may understand the network, I actually have a network engineer who comes in and does all of the work and then hands it off to my phone team.” Founded by Don Kidwell in 1948 and purchased by Don’s son, Chris, in 1973, Kidwell has 220 employees in three locations: Lincoln, Omaha, and Kearney. HE RIGHT SUNGLASSES can be fash-

ion statements while also serving the important role of protecting a person’s eyes. Since sunglasses play such a vital role in protecting eyes, it’s best to consult with the experts when it comes to selecting the right pair—or pairs—of sunglasses. Dr. Jeff Brewer and Dr. Jaimie Kruger of Legacy Eyecare provide the Omaha area’s most trusted destination for stylish, effective sunglasses. The knowledgeable staff helps clients find the very best sunglasses to match their lifestyles. Exposure to the sun’s UV rays can damage eyes over time, particularly in children. “A child’s eyes absorb triple the amount of ultra violet radiation and harmful

blue wavelengths of light as an adult’s eyes,” says Kruger, a pediatric specialist. That’s why it’s important for parents to encourage their children to make a habit of wearing sunglasses when outdoors—a much easier task when the children choose sunglasses they love. Sunglasses purchased from Legacy Eyecare are guaranteed to provide the eye protection that other sources only claim to provide. “We have a unique set of artists,” Curnes remarks. “Each one is doing something very different from the others.” The gallery also hosts a monthly visiting artist and displays artwork created by Curnes’ sister and grandfather. In fact, it is Marco’s broad scope of solutions that makes them such a valuable resource. AMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES FACE unique

challenges in regard to goal setting and succession planning. “Each generation has different risk tolerances and objectives, and those need to be clearly defined and communicated,” notes Rod Jewell of MassMutual. Creating a succession plan helps ensure that a family business will continue to flourish when a family member develops a serious illness, dies, or retires. Taking a long-range view of the company’s future can be difficult if most of the owner’s time and energy is involved in getting from one month to the next, so it’s important to find a trusted adviser who can introduce the business owners to various options and help to engage in thoughtful planning. The Montessori system prepares children to become confident, motivated learners and good citizens. Montessori children are able to problem-solve and think critically, and are also taught soft skills such as appropriate social and emotional interactions—skills that are vital to their future success as adults.

“Our teachers encourage and respect independence in children,” explains owner Julie Roy. “Everything is child-led and we view children’s play as their work— we respect their natural curiosity.”

Roy currently owns nine Montessori schools in Omaha and her goal is to reach 1000 children a year through her passion of the Montessori method of teaching.

tered educational approach. There are lower teacher to student ratios, and the school offers a wide variety of additional daily learning experiences such as Spanish, yoga, art, and nature-certified outdoor classrooms.

The teachers act as liaisons between the learning materials and the children, who are able to progress both academically and socially at their own pace. EING AN ENTREPRENEUR is a very

noble activity and is critically important to the economics of life. The entrepreneur provides for families and the communities that they live in. They provide the mentoring and coaching to inspire the young who are willing to work hard. Entrepreneurs are the bedrock of a free and democratic society and are the first to stand against an over-reaching government. It is for these reasons, that Nabity has developed their company to help business owners design strategic plans that assure long term success. When they do their job right, the children will still love each other after Mom and Dad are gone and want to stay a

family. The business will be in the hands of the most capable successors. Young talent will be given the opportunity to carry on the legacy of the business and the local community will be sustained, because the mothers and fathers who work in the business can continue to provide for their families. but not when it’s at a resort with ample playtime and attention. Paw Pet Spa Resort, now with two locations, provides everything a visiting dog needs, all under the watchful eye of pet parents, who can view dogs’ activities online or through the app. The Audrey Street location features a large outdoor play area. The 168th Street location boasts an indoor play area with surround sound and a state-of-the-art play-relief system with a unique under-turf flushing system, allowing dogs to enjoy “outdoor” play even when the weather doesn’t permit. HE KEY TO success for PIP Marketing, Signs & Print has always been listening to customers and giving them what they want. Sometimes this means thinking outside of the box or doing something that has not been done before, but, as owner Debbie Bremer explains, “We don’t like to say no to customers.” This reluctance to disappoint has led to some interesting projects over the years—instead of declining a project, “We figure out how to do it,” says Bremer. PIP Marketing, Signs & Print has grown and expanded largely because of their willingness to tackle unique projects. “We started with print on paper and evolved into bigger things,” says Bremer.

|| 80 || Faces of Omaha 2018

“We evolved with customer needs.” PIP Marketing, Signs & Print is consistently one of the first printers in the Omaha area to adapt to new technology as it develops. It’s not unusual for customers to exclaim, “We didn’t know you did that!” When Bremer and her team have their daily morning meetings, they figure out ways to educate their existing customers on the capabilities PIP Marketing, Signs & Print has since their capabilities are so impressive. ASED ON 27 years of experience,

James Pull has formed strong opinions about how to install siding, gutters, and roofing. “I am fussy about my jobs,” he says. “Some installers put siding on the wall without understanding the logistics involved. The windows have to be flashed, for example. It’s all about waterproofing.” James started working in construction immediately after high school, and worked in his field for 11 years before establishing Premier Exteriors in 2001. He hires employees who are willing to learn how to do things correctly. “I tell the people that I’m training,

‘If you don’t pay attention to details, you will not do well in this line of work.’ The devil is in the details.” Premier Exteriors will install any type of siding, but James’ favorite is Hardie fiber cement. “It’s made out of concrete and silica, so it doesn’t rot, peel, or fade,” he explains. “It’s the best siding available, and I have it on my own house.” James also wishes to thank the company’s customers for voting Premier Exteriors the Best of Omaha. Then we’ll give you an exact price, to the penny— not an estimated cost.”

Re-Bath provides a full range of custom bathroom remodeling options, including accessibility solutions for people with limited mobility. Croteau emphasizes that Re-Bath is not a quick-fix or “cover-up” remodeler: “We don’t do a bathroom in one day. We’re pulling permits; we’re using licensed plumbers. We don’t cut corners.” A typical shower/ bath remodel takes two days, and a complete overhaul usually takes about a week. RE-BATH 4123 S. 84TH ST., OMAHA, NE 68127 402.796.1322 REBATH.COM

Doug’s grandfather bought the company in 1935, and Doug began working there as a college student. Today his son and daughter are part of the staff. Doug attributes the company’s success to the quality of its people.

“The professionalism and high skill level of our team is just extraordinary,” Doug comments. “Many of our team members have been with us for a very long time, and I think one reason they enjoy working here is that we’re at the forefront of digital technology. you don’t need to prearrange,” remarks Jon Roeder. “Pre-planning is something you do for the family you leave behind.” He emphasizes the importance of sharing information with family members before a death occurs. Equally important is choosing a mortuary that is owned and operated by compassionate people who have lots of experience helping families deal with the loss of a loved one. Jon and his son, Brian, are the third and fourth generations to operate Roeder Mortuary, which has been family-owned and operated since it was founded in 1912. Today there are three locations in

the Omaha area: on 108th Street and West Maple Road, 49th Street and Ames Avenue, and in Gretna. Roeder’s offers traditional burial as well as cremation. If people choose cremation, this decision brings additional choices such as whether to have a visitation and what to do with the ashes.
