Outdoors from 3 Since then, they have drawn in more bikers with motorcycle gear, more winter sports enthusiasts with skiing and snowshoeing equipment, and more hunters with a collection of about 600 knives. They also sell hunting and fishing licenses. “We’ve put a lot of work into it, basically as much money as we could,” he said. “We’ve added a lot of stuff to the store and tried to keep it high-quality and Northwest-oriented.” Some of the knives are handmade locally, including some crafted from Damascus steel. “They’re really, really dramatic pieces of work. They’re art, but usable art,” Rider said. The store has expanded its hours for the summer season, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 6 p.m. on weekends. Business hours are cut back to four days per week when the weather turns cold. Rider said business slows down, but he likes to stay open for ice fishermen and other snow-lovers. The Methow Valley has an extensive groomed trail system, he said, that allows for cross-country skiers to ski into the downtown

The Outdoorsman has plenty of flies for the avid angler. area for lunch and light shopping. Looking to the future, The Outdoorsman is also carrying more hiking equipment and building up its website, where Rider hopes to one day sell more inventory. This is Rider’s first foray into retail. He worked for 35 years in sawmills in eastern Oregon and Omak. “After 35 years in the sawmills, now I’m behind a cash register, and that’s a whole different world for me. I’ve met people from all over the world and enjoy that,” Rider said. “It’s been fun.”
Although the shop focuses on outdoor activities, it has something for everyone, co-owner Lance Rider said.
