Mid-Valley Hospital’s 3,051-square-foot emergency room wing was completed in 2010 for just under $2.4 million.
Mid-Valley adds emergency wing By Rebecka Ellis The Chronicle OMAK –Mid-Valley Hospital, 810 Jasmine St., continues to be renovated and expanded through a series of projects. The latest in a series of renovations is a new emergency room wing, which added 3,051 square feet and expanded
emergency care from three beds separated by curtains to nine self-contained rooms. “The project was completed for just under $2.4 million, which was the budget,” said Administrator Mike Billing said. The emergency room includes a triage room, a private, secure place “that gives the nurses the opportunity to
assess the patient without interruption. This is something we did not have before,” Nursing Supervisor Madeline Jenkins said. Jenkins, who has worked at Mid-Valley for more than 10 years, said she is pleased with the addition’s outcome. “I love my job, and I love the new emergency room. I can see inside the rooms and if
someone needs my help, I can see that immediately now,” Jenkins said. “This new setup gives us, as nurses, the opportunity to provide more personal nursing care.” Mid-Valley also has twentyfive patient beds and, as Level 4 trauma center, two trauma rooms. A helipad is available

Ongoing renovations since 1997 have included a new roof, birthing center, imaging center remodel, physical therapy department, parking lot repaving and expansion, and a health information management system. Mid-Valley’s services include pediatrics, outpatient services, pharmacy, geriatrics, respiratory therapy, obstetrics and gynecology, laboratory and radiology services, intensive care, surgical services, and physical and speech therapy. “I am proud to be a part of the staff here at Mid-Valley Hospital,” Billing said. “The staff here works hard, and it shows. They deserve this hospital.” Mid-Valley received the 2003 Community Value Index 5-star award, 2003 CVI Top 100 award, 2009 STEMI Protocol Adopters Award, 2010 Small and Rural Best Practice

A good night’s sleep is good medicine By Cheryl Schweizer The Chronicle BREWSTER – It’s always been known that a good night’s sleep was good medicine. But it’s becoming clear that adequate sleep is important in combating disease – and a lack of sleep can contribute to disease. “It’s amazing how important sleep is,” Okanogan-Douglas District Hospital Sleep Medicine Clinic Director Tammie Tallant said. It’s the only sleep medicine clinic in Okanogan County. Sleep disorders can affect

Sleep from 8 both children and adults and come with a variety of symptoms, she said. They can contribute to obesity and high blood pressure in adults, and excessive daytime sleepiness and trouble concentrating during the day, among other symptoms, Tallant said. Children with sleep disorders may have trouble concentrating in school and they may contribute to behavior disorders, she said. Someone with a sleep disorder may not know it’s part of the problem, Tallant said. The hospital has prepared questionnaires for primary care physicians to help them determine when sleep disorders may be part of the diagnosis. “I’m working really hard to educate
(doctors) in this area,” Tallant said. A person who thinks he or she may have a sleep disorder can contact the sleep medicine clinic directly, but many patients are referred by a primary care physician, she said. Once a patient gets as far as the clinic, the first step is a meeting with Dr. Eric Haeger, the physician in charge of the clinic. Haeger is boardcertified to diagnose and treat sleep disorders, and the sleep clinic is certified by the American Association of Sleep Medicine, Tallant said. He will assess the patient, examine airways and the respiratory system, and determines whether a sleep study is applicable, she said. When a study is prescribed, the patient stays overnight at the hospital.
“We have a very unlike-hospital setting,” Tallant said. The sleep center is located in the former Hillcrest House building, next to the hospital, 507 Hospital Way. “We encourage you to bring your own pillow – everything but your birthday suit, we say,” Tallant said. Family members can stay in the same room. “We just want to create a pleasant experience,” she said. Diagnosis involves the whole body, head to toe, from analysis of brain waves to excessive leg movement, Tallant said. The overnight sleep study doesn’t work for all patients; sometimes the first step in diagnosis is a two-week diary kept by the patient, then a daytime study. “We can figure it out,” she said.
Ferry County hospital boasts advancements By Zachary Van Brunt The Chronicle REPUBLIC – Though Ferry County only has a population slightly more than 7,500 – roughly the residents of Omak and Okanogan combined – it still boasts a highly equipped medical facility. The Ferry County Memorial Hospital, 36 Klondike Road, is a 25bed facility that provides emergency room services, an assisted living facility, and acute, intermediate, and longterm care services, Interim Administrator
Jim Richardson said. “You don’t need a hospital very often in your life, but when you do, you need it badly,” Ferry County Public Hospital District Commissioner Ron Bacon said. “At least twice in my life I’ve had to have one,” he said. “If there hadn’t been a hospital, I probably wouldn’t have made it.” Bacon, who has served on the hospital board for two years, said one of those times was when he suffered a stroke.

North Valley services are varied Renovation adds to facility; care ranges from obstetrics to veterans services By Rebecka Ellis The Chronicle TONASKET - North Valley Hospital, 22 W. First St., offers services from veterans care to obstetrics in a facility that was expanded and spruced up last year. The $11.5 million renovation left the facility with 18,000 square feet. The newest addition is a Veterans Administration clinic, located in its own building outside of the hospital proper. “Instead of veterans traveling to find adequate health care specific to their needs, they can now come

A large seating area is available in each delivery room for the patient’s family, along with a jetted tub for patients who require more birthing accommodations. The new birthing rooms eliminate traversing from a delivery to a recovery room, making recovery for the patient “wonderful and easy on everyone involved,” Orford said. “They are just beautiful. I would use these rooms if I were going to have another child.” In 2010, North Valley Hospital received several awards: STEMI Protocol Superstars, Emergency Department Door to Electrocardiogram in Under 12 Minutes, Best Practice OB Care and Adopting the ACOG Induction Guidelines.
“Washington state’s rural residents should be proud of their community hospitals. They should feel confident in the quality and safety of the care they provide,” Rural Health Quality Network Executive Director Randy Benson said. Also included in the expansion project was a decontamination room. In case of an incident involving chemicals, it will protect not only the patient, but also caregivers and the environment, hospital officials said. The room is isolated, meaning contaminated air is not recirculated back into the hospital. A cardiac trauma room offers a specialized place for heart attack patients. It is equipped for “any situation that could come up with a cardiac arrest patient,” Orford said. North Valley Hospital also offers its patients a digital mammogram service, which allows the patient to remain standing and works more quickly with more accurate

Now this facility shows it,” Orford said. There’s no intensive care unit, “but we have the accommodations to send any patient anywhere they need to go with ease,” she said. North Valley Hospital offers ambulance transportation through Tonasket and Oroville
emergency medical services, and LifeLine Ambulance in Okanogan. Medstar and Airlift Northwest provide air ambulance transport in severe trauma cases. The future has the “potential for a larger physical therapy department,” Orford said. The building “has a daylight basement, nearly as big as the frequented floors.” Tours of the facilities can be arranged, she said.

including eight physicians, and averaged 3,554 visitors a month. Grand Coulee Dam was under construction. In 1960, hospital directors voted to relocate the hospital and build a new facility in Grand Coulee. The name was changed to Coulee Medical Center, and the facility struggled with closure several times. It nearly closed in 1990, because of a shortage of physicians. That year, residents of Douglas, Grant, Lincoln, and Okanogan counties voted to form Hospital District No. 6, with the goal of having a publicly owned hospital to stabilize finances. A fivemember governing board was chosen. Since that time, use of the hospital has more than doubled. The facility has more than 18,000 patients each year, and it has become financially stable, hospital officials said.
“It’s got to be there and we’ve got to find a way to keep it there,” he said. “We’re making strong progress,” board Chairman Donald Seeborg, Keller, said. “We had a fairly serious financial concern and we’ve been making adjustments to improve on that and we’re quite pleased with the results that we’ve achieved so far. “The hospital is an important and necessary part of our community. You don’t want to see a community like ours not having the hospital as a resource,” he said. The fact that such a technologically advanced facility exists in the rural area makes it unique, Bacon said. “That’s really been the rub up here that we don’t have the population,” he said. “We’ve got top-of-the-line CAT scans and we’re getting new endoscopy equipment. “The hospital does all the lab work you can normally get at a clinic,” he said.

If both parents have allergies, odds increase to 75 percent. “Allergies account for more than 17 million physician office visits, 30,000 emergency room visits and several hundred deaths each year,” said registered nurse Christine Delucas, vice president for clinical operations for Quorum Health Resources. “Individuals with allergies are also at heightened risk for other diseases, including asthma.” Both Okanogan-Douglas District Hospital, Brewster, and Ferry County Memorial Hospital, Republic, contract with Quorum. common allergic reaction, a person can have a number of symptoms including itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, rashes, feeling tired and hives. Symptoms can vary, depending on what the allergic reaction involves. Food allergies have more internal reactions, such as stomach cramps, vomiting or diarrhea. Symptom severity can range from very mild, almost even unnoticeable, to severe. Moderate allergic reactions can mimic a cold or the flu, while more severe reactions can be debilitating. While most symptoms do not last long after the exposure to the allergen stops, the most severe allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis, can be life threatening. An allergist can perform different tests to help the trigger. They include skin testing, blood tests or the process of eliminating and reintroducing certain allergens in order to find triggers. Once allergens are detected, prevention can involve taking certain prescription and overthe-counter medicines. More severe and anaphylactic reactions may require the use of a by-prescription auto-injector pen. Resource Center, 315 Lincoln St., Twisp. Information: 800660-1624. Visual Impairment Services.
