Baby names run in trends Experts examine trends, past history for name predictions Are you expecting but still undecided on a name? Some experts predict baby names for 2011 signal a new, lighter feel and more optimistic outlook. Some trends to consider: • Proper names that can be morphed. Proper names such as Louise, Arthur, Beatrix and Abraham can be nicknames. Parents get two very different names for the price of one, which can be an advantage to children as they grow up too: Lulu by night can be Louise by day. Some names without obvious nicknames now are being shortened: Caleb becomes Cub, Alistair becomes Ace and so on. • Pick the nickname first. Another route is to choose the nickname, then find a formal name to go with it. Josie really is Josephine, Zee is Zachary. • Make a switch. Experts are seeing more traditional dog names being used for babies, and vice versa. Buster and Buddy might occupy the crib in the next room, while Chloe or Zoe might be in the doghouse some nights. • Ha! Lots of names beginning with “ha” are predicted: Hayden, Harry, Hazel, Harrison, Harper, Hadley, Hank, Haven, Hal, Hart, Harriet, Hattie, Hale, Harley, Hartley, Harlow. • It’s all about “us.” The Latin “us” for boys is increasingly popular: Atticus, Aurelius, Augustus, Cassius, Maximus, Amadeus. Other stylish s-ending names: Rufus, Amos, Miles. • About time. Some people are choosing month names such as January and May, holiday and seasonal names such as Winter and Easter and day or time of day names, such as Sunday and Midnight, are being used. • Think old. Stanley is a new entry to the British Top 100. Other old-timey names up for reconsideration: Ernest, Harvey, Arthur, Walter, Warren. • Switching genders. Some names are truly androgynous: Paxton, Peyton, Sawyer, Sasha. Parents are no longer backing off from using a name for boys once it becomes
popular for girls. • Flower power. The freshest flower name is Azalea. Other exotic blossom names are Dahlia, Poppy, Lotus, Lilac, Acacia, Marigold and Camellia. Lily, Rose and Daisy appear to be losing their bloom. • Arrr! A popular beginning for names is R, not as in old-school Robert, Richard and Rhoda, but as in such rich and robust newcomers as Rufus, Rupert, Ray, Rosamund, Raphael, Roman, Romy, Romilly,
Remy, Rory, Reed, Rhys, Rowan, Ronan, Reeve, Ripley, Roscoe, Reuben and Ruby. • It’s all about the O. O has come into its own as a beginning — Oliver, Olivia, Oscar, Owen, Orson, Olive, Oliympia, Octavia and Ophelia – and an ending — Milo. Otto and Orlando have it coming and going. • Space, the final frontier. Parents also are finding inspiration from above with names inspired by the objects and creatures of the heavens. They include planet names such as
As A Child Grows
Mars and Jupiter, star names such as Orion, angel names from Seraphina to Gabriel, and other celestial names such as Stella and Luna. • Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. Yes, “Twilight” names have been hot, but are starting to fade. There may not be as many babies named Bella, Edward, Cullen, Emmett, Jasper, Esme and Felix.

Parents can help a sick child Watching a child suffer, even if it’s from a sore nose, is terrible for a parent By ARA Content Any parent who’s sat up through the night with a sick child knows relieving their symptoms is only part of your mission. Easing the discomforts of cold and flu for your little one is a No. 1 priority. “Watching your child suffer, even if it’s from something as minor as a nose that’s sore and chapped from repeated blowing, is a terrible feeling for any parent,” mother and pediatrician Dr. Tanya Remer Altman said. “Relieving the discomforts related to cold and flu not only helps kids feel better, it also reduces stresses for their parents.” “Dr. Tanya,” as she’s known to her patients and those who’ve seen her on “The Today Show” or who follow her blog, offers some tips to help parents make children feel more comfortable while fighting a cold or the flu: • Flu vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months and older, but it’s not unusual for children to fear a shot. Ask your pediatrician about giving your child the flu vaccine in a nasal spray form. It’s available for children 2 and older, and provides the same protection and safety as the traditional flu shot. • Your mother probably swore by chicken soup and she was on to something. Serving sick children chicken soup not only gives them the benefit of nourishment while their bodies are fighting a virus, studies show chicken soup has antiinflammatory properties as well. Plus, it’s a popular comfort food that most kids love. • Sore, chapped noses add to the discomfort of having a cold. Tissues with added lotion can help prevent chapping from frequent nose blowing and wiping. The strong, lotion-filled tissues can help children get more out of their nose blowing, ensuring they’re confident they can blow without getting anything “icky” on their little hands. You can also use petroleum jelly or unscented ointment to soothe the irritation and discomfort. • Another way to help relieve a stuffy nose is to try a few drops of nasal saline and gentle suctioning.
A cool mist humidifier and a liberal application of rub on children older than 2 can also help. • Frequent hand-washing is important to prevent the spread of viruses. Washing your hands a lot, especially in cold weather, can leave them dry, sore and cracked. Teach your children to wash their hands while singing “Wash, wash, wash your hands, wash them every day. Wash them with water and wash them with soap to wash the
germs away” to the tune of “Row, row, row your boat.” Then follow up with a soothing lotion. You can find many fragrance-free varieties specially formulated for children. • When your child’s throat is sore, he might be unwilling to eat or drink much. Offer a sugar-free fruit frozen pop instead. The coolness can help ease a sore throat, your child will get some hydration from the frozen juice and he’ll feel like he’s getting a special treat.
• Make trips to the doctor’s office fun by bringing a book or toy to keep your child occupied, and a snack in case she gets hungry. A special reward or treat after the visit is also a nice tradition. • Don’t overlook your own mental comfort as well; call the doctor if you feel your child’s symptoms are worrisome.

Plan ahead for the high costs of children By ARA Content While today’s economy continues to put extra stress on most Americans’ wallets, those preparing to welcome a new child into the family experience the added pressure of a whole new set of expenses. From diapers to baby furniture and day care, the costs for new parents mount quickly. For some, the reality of these expenses is daunting. Others are completely unaware of how the joy of a new child will impact their financial situation. So, just how much does a baby cost? The answer depends on many factors. Does one parent stay at home or does the family
hire a child care provider? Will the child attend public or private school? Is there a need for a larger home or car for the growing clan? Raising a child costs an average of nearly $11,000 the first year and more than $220,000 for the first 18 years, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. So where do expecting and new parents start? Thrivent Financial for Lutherans offers five “baby steps” to help them prepare. • Start early. During your pregnancy, take the time to determine your family’s immediate financial needs as well as your long-term goals. • Create a realistic budget. Determine the true cost of what
you will need and weigh it against the new realities of your household income situation. This is particularly important if you plan on leaving the workforce for an extended period of time. Consult another new parent for a list of monthly baby expenses to get a clear picture of those costs. • Start and/or increase an emergency fund. The chances of unexpected expenses will become much greater once the little one comes on the scene. • Get protection through proper insurance. It’s time to face your own mortality and vulnerability. Protection is critical. Consult with a financial representative to insure your health, property, income and life
Cooking with kids should be fun By ARA Content Cooking a meal should be fun for both children and adults. By engaging your children in food preparation, you can demonstrate valuable food lessons while enjoying time well spent with your family. By including everyone in the preparation, you can introduce your children to how fun cooking and eating together can be. Not only will they learn a little bit about navigating the kitchen, but they will also discover how it can serve as the perfect platform for a math lesson or an art project.
Here are a few tips for making your family meals fun and childfriendly: • Get your kids involved in cooking preparation from an early age. Your little ones will get a kick out of doing something as simple as dumping a cup of flour into a mixer and watching you use everyday kitchen tools. You can also use the measurements that go into recipes as a teaching opportunity for your child with a built-in math lesson. Children can also lend a hand by setting the table or designing placemats for the family meal.
• Make food fun. Keep your kids engaged by experimenting with different colors, shapes and sizes of foods they know. • Create excitement for dinnertime. A great way to make sure kids look forward to mealtimes is to participate in fun activities as a family. Theme nights are a great way to engage children around the dinner table. You can prepare traditional meals from around the world, or cook a meal inspired by your family’s favorite movie or vacation spot.

through appropriate insurance. In addition, consider a juvenile life insurance policy when your child is born. Also, be sure to update the beneficiary designation on your own policies once the baby is born. • Save for college. Before you know it, your child will leave the nest, so start saving for college now. A financial professional can assist with the various investment
tools available today for college savings. Opening a savings account in the child’s name is a great starting point for depositing monetary gifts given to the child. Supporting a family is hard work. Having the knowledge and tools you need to help ensure your financial stability will make the journey less complicated and even more rewarding.

Help your child’s creativity blossom The Chronicle Children love to do art projects — whether they be with crayons, markers, paints or dough. Such projects help develop fine motor skills and help children learn about colors. Besides, they’re fun. Squooshing dough through the fingers, rolling it and cutting it into shapes or modeling it into animals can be a great way to spend an afternoon. Finger paints can be messy, but an old T-short can help keep paint off clothing. Spread out a layer of newspapers to protect flooring or tabletops. The dough and paint recipes here are fast and easy to make, inexpensive and easy to clean up. They’re also non-toxic and, with the exception of a couple paint recipes, are edible, though they’re not particularly tasty. That’s a plus, because small children seem to put everything in their mouths. A roll of butcher paper provides a great canvas for children’s artwork. It’s inexpensive, sturdy and can be cut in varying lengths. Some parents buy or make
easels that allow paper to roll from one side to another for a continuous art project.
Homemade play dough
1 cup white flour 1/4 cup salt 2 tablespoons cream of tartar Combine and add: 1 cup cold water Food coloring (optional) 1 tablespoon cooking oil In a medium saucepan, mix together flour, salt and cream of tartar. A non-stick pot works best. Combine water, a few drops of food coloring (if desired) and oil. Add to dry ingredients and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for three to five minutes. It will look globby. When it forms a ball in the center of the pot, remove from the heat and turn it out on a slightly floured surface. Knead briefly until smooth. Cool and store in an airtight container (a one-pint cottage cheese or margarine tub will hold it) or a zippered plastic bag. This dough is edible, but not tasty. It keeps, unrefrigerated, for

several weeks. Be sure to provide plenty of cookie cutters, a rolling pin, dull plastic knives, bottle caps and other items for cutting and shaping. This dough cleans up well. If a bit of it does dry on a surface, pick or chip off as much as possible, then remove the rest with a damp rag or non-abrasive scrubber. If it’s left uncolored, it won’t stain.
