What’s in a
name? Some locals go for the popular names, while others use some creativity By Sheila Corson The Chronicle OMAK – Whether creative, classic or crazy, baby names are tracked each year, and area residents came out with many of the state’s top names – along with some unique ones. Of the 108 babies in this year’s Oh Baby, seven of them have one of the top names for babies in 2011 statewide. Sophia came out on top for Washington, with 474 girls by that name. One is in this publication. Next were Olivia, Isabella, Emma, Ava, Abigail, Emily, Elizabeth, Madison and Chloe. For boys, Jacob was the top name with 416, but none are in Oh Baby.

Breastfeeding: Making it work at work State and federal laws make sure moms have a cozy place to pump By Sheila Corson The Chronicle OMAK – With legal protections in place, mothers wanting to continue breastfeeding while going back to work have the resources they need to make it work. By federal and state law, employers must provide a break time and comfortable, private place (other than a bathroom) to a mother wanting to express breast milk at work. Provisions for moms have been in place for years, and some more recently as part of the 2010 Health Care Reform Law. “One great thing is Washington state really supports moms going back to work,” Okanogan Family Health Centers breastfeeding peer
counselor Brooke Rueda said. Most employers know this, but Rueda said mothers who have an issue with a boss can get the information from Family Health Centers to share with employers. Rueda said the WIC (Womens, Infants, Children) program will loan pumps to moms who qualify. Jessica Charley at WIC for the Colville Confederated Tribes in Omak said her office also provides pumps.

Statewide pertussis cases on rise Pregnant women, baby caretakers should get vaccine The Chronicle OLYMPIA — Whooping cough is a growing problem in Washington state, with the number of cases increasing by more than 50 percent between 2010 and 2011. There were 912 cases for 2011 — the highest in six years, the state Department of Health reported. There were 608 cases reported in 2010. In recent years, adolescents and adults have accounted for an increasing proportion of cases. “The number of reported cases is just the tip of the iceberg,” State Health Officer and pediatrician Dr. Maxine Hayes said. “Many young people and adults who get
pertussis may not know they have it and don’t seek medical attention.” Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory illness spread by coughing and sneezing. It affects people of all ages — but is most serious in infants, especially those too young to get vaccinated or who aren’t fully protected. It causes cold-like symptoms followed by a long, severe cough that can last for weeks. Adolescents and adults often get a
Sweet Savings Sweet Pea
much milder case of whooping cough, but they can still spread it. A new recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices calls for pregnant women to get pertussis vaccine (Tdap) later in pregnancy (after 20 weeks’ gestation). Women who get Tdap vaccine before or during pregnancy pass on extra protection against pertussis to their babies. It’s important for anyone who takes care of or has close contact with babies to get pertussis vaccine, ideally at least two weeks
before beginning close contact with the infant, the department said. This includes siblings of infants who should be up to date on DTaP and other recommended immunizations. Tdap vaccine is available for adolescents and adults through age 64. Adults 65 and older who expect to have close contact with babies younger than 12 months should get a dose of Tdap to help protect the baby from pertussis. Health care workers of all ages who have contact with infants should get vaccinated, too.

Breast is best: benefits for all Breastfeeding saves money, promotes baby and mom health The Chronicle OLYMPIA – Breastfeeding provides many benefits over formula-feeding, both for baby and the rest of the family. According to the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington, breastfeeding helps build a bond between a mother and child. For the baby, it also strengthens the immune system, helps develop brain and possibly improve IQ, reduces ear infections, allergies, illnesses, diarrhea and constipation, and promotes good jaw development for proper tooth alignment. Breast milk is all a baby needs during its first six months and is the best food through the first year, the coalition said. For the mother, breastfeeding burns calories to help get back to pre-pregnancy weight more
quickly and reduces the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. Breastfeeding can be much more convenient as well, as there are no bottles to wash, formula to prepare or worry about food not being fresh. Breastfeeding exclusively can save a family more than $1,000 in the first six months of the baby’s life.
Work From 4 Both have support groups as well, with peer counselors and information to help moms make it work at work. Rueda said she is available to help “get them through those difficult moments when they’re breastfeeding.” Although classes and support groups through WIC are for WIConly moms, both the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington and the La Leche League have multiple resources, as well as a hotline, for moms who need a little extra advice, Rueda said. Rueda said the key is really to talk with bosses when women decide they will be breastfeeding and working, and get help if anything gets difficult.

The other top statewide names were Alexander, Daniel, William, Ethan, Benjamin, Liam, Elijah and Noah. The most popular names in Oh Baby were Addison (2) for girls – No. 18 statewide – and Jackson/Jaxon (3) for boys – Nos. 12/92 statewide. Gavin (2) was also popular for boys. Locally, hospitals don’t keep a record of specific baby names, but North Valley Hospital tracked the two most popular out of its 88 2011 births – Paisley for girls and Jesus for boys, Business Development Coordinator Terri Orford said. Statewide, Jesus was No. 87 on the popularity list, while Paisley wasn’t even in the top 100.
