Rodeo events set to go By Dee Camp The Chronicle
Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association events and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racing. A running of the World-Famous Suicide Race comes after each rodeo performance. Activities begin Aug. 13 with opening of the Davis Shows carnival at the west end of East Side Park, in which the rodeo arena also is located. The encampment gets under way Wednesday evening with campers night. The Omak Western and Native Art Show starts Thursday at The Courtyard Downtown, 28 N. Main St. Preceding the Thursday night rodeo is the annual Wrangler Kids’ Night, starting at 4 p.m. in the arena. Youngsters can compete in a variety of games and a dress-up contest; prizes will be given. Thursday is family night at the rodeo. Slack competition in timed
OMAK – Top cowboys and cowgirls – more than 400 of them - are signed up to compete at the 82nd annual Omak Stampede, set for Aug. 13-16. The 80th World-Famous Suicide Race, plus the Omak Stampede Indian Encampment, ride-in, grand parade, an art show and other Western fun accompany the rodeo. Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday in the Omak Stampede Arena, 421 Stampede Drive E. Tickets are available from the Stampede ticket office next to the arena in East Side Park, online or by phone. Prices vary, depending on the performance and section. Special prices are offered on Thursday for family night and on Sunday. Fans can expect a full range of

Stampede officials urge rodeo participants and fans to wear pink. Sunday is Patriot Day in support of U.S. troops, with red, white and blue clothing encouraged by Stampede officials. Veterans get in free with military ID. Each rodeo performance begins with the Parade of Flags, a drill involving horses and riders carrying flags sponsored by area businesses, clubs and agencies. Arena runs by royalty follow, with Stampede Queen Menze Pickering, Oroville, reigning over the event. The first competitive event on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be ranch bronc riding, with competitors using stock saddles. The event is sanctioned by the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association. Assisting the cowboys will be bullfighters Erick Schwindt and Rowdy Barry, and clown and barrelman J.J. Harrison, who grew up in Okanogan. The specialty act is trick rider Kyzer Stoddard. The announcer will be Steve Kenyon. Stock contractors are Big Bend, Ritzville, and Flying 5, Pomeroy. Suicide Race fans wearing booster buttons, available on the grounds and in local businesses, will be admitted to special viewing areas on the hill and the dike in the park. A rodeo ticket stub from the performance
preceding each race also grants admission to the dike area. Viewing also is available from many areas of the arena for rodeo ticket holders. Concessions will operate all weekend on the grounds. Vendors offer a variety of food and beverages, cowboy hats and other souvenirs. Queen’s passion for rodeo shines through By Brock Hires The Chronicle OMAK – Since Menze Pickering got on a horse as a little girl, her passion for the sport of rodeo has never been in doubt. At age 19, the former Okanogan County Fair queen said she is truly honored to represent the community as Miss Omak Stampede this year. “It’s been really great,” she said of her reign, which began late last fall. “I’ve had the time of my life this year. “I was raised with horses and stuff like that,” she said. “I’ve been going to the fair for a long time and decided to wait a year (to run for Stampede queen) because it’s such a big event.” Pickering will be riding her
14-year-old paint mare, Splash, throughout the weekend and credits her successful reign so for to Splash. “She’s also been really great to me, too,” Pickering said of her horse. “I’ve taken her everywhere; no problems with her at all. “She loves parades and rodeo and is at the perfect age.” Pickering is the daughter of Rick and Lisa Pickering, of Oroville, and an Eastern Washington University student. Show features Western, native art By Brock Hires The Chronicle OMAK – Artwork from local and out-of-town artists will be featured during the 35th annual Omak Western and Native Art Show Aug. 13-16 at the Courtyard Downtown, 28 N. Main St. The show, which is free to attend, will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and from 9 am to 2 p.m. on Sunday. “For a small show, there is really some nice art there,” said Artists Okanogan County Association spokeswoman Tina Reeve Tharp of Brewster. “It’s good quality art and it’s unusual (and) extraordinary for around here.”

Encampment opens Wednesday The Chronicle OMAK — The annual Omak Stampede Indian Encampment opens Wednesday, Aug. 13, and continues through Sunday Aug. 16, with dancing, drumming and stick game competitions. The encampment is in the northeast corner of East Side Park, with dancing and drumming in the Dance Arbor

Dance from 7 won last year’s drum contest, is the host drum. Arts, crafts and food venders will open Wednesday and continue through Sunday. Events are planned Thursday evening. Stick games are ongoing throughout the weekend. Friday grand entry is at 7 p.m. and includes an invocation, flag song, royalty speeches and a variety of dancing. Saturday offers a full slate of activities, including grand entries at 1:30 and 7:15 p.m. Drum roll calls precede the start of dancing. Tiny tot, junior, teen, men’s, women’s and golden age events are planned in a variety of styles. Dinner is planned at the Dance Arbor for drummers and dancers. Sunday afternoon the drum roll call will be at 1 p.m., followed the grand entry at 1:30 p.m. The 2015-16 Omak Stampede Indian Encampment royalty, winners of dancers and drum groups will be announced and ceremonies will conclude.

Suicide Race should be speedy In competitive field, with low water, Taz chases records By Al Camp The Chronicle OMAK – This year’s 80th annual World-Famous Suicide Race, from Aug. 13-16, promises to be one of the fastest, most competitive in many years. The race, run after each performance of the Omak Stampede rodeo, finds horses sprinting 100 feet before speeding down an embankment, crossing the Okanogan River and heading to the finish in the rodeo arena. As of this writing, 29 horses were qualified to race, with three more days (July 31 to Aug. 2) of qualifying by the Owners and Jockeys Association. There were another 21 horses attempting to qualify.

Qualifying includes horses passing a veterinary check, plus showing they can handle the river and hill. The number of what horses qualified and for which entry fees were paid by Sunday, Aug. 2, is not known. But with 29 horses
already champing at the bit to enter and up to 50 horses possible, there should be elimination races to whittle the field down to a maximum of 20 horses. Elimination races, should more than 20 horses enter, are
planned for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Aug. 9 to reduce the field to the maximum of 20 horses. “The practices and qualification turned out really well with the number of riders and horses that came to participate,” association President Shannon Boyd said. Last year, when the river also was low, there were 36 horses attempting to enter with 26 finally paying. That required elimination races. The favorite this year remains Taz, a six-time overall champion. Taz, which has qualified this year, will continue to chase history. It’s already tied for second, with Big Jim, as the second most-winning horse in the race’s 80-year history. The horse, owned by Jim Phillips and ridden by Loren Marchand, won the overall title last year and has 20 first-place victories since it started

Speedy from 10 competing in 2007 (three second place finishes that year). Taz won overall titles from 2008-2010 and again 2012-14. The horse did not compete in 2011 after failing a swim test. Taz and Loren Marchand are in a rare group that since 1979, when four performances were introduced, won four straight in a year – 2008 and 2012. Others include Patch and Aaron Carden in 2007, Reuben and Tyler Peasley in 2006 and Tony and Kerry Carden in 1981. This year could be the toughest test yet for Taz, which is chasing the 27 wins by Brownie set between 1949 and 1965. Taz has already equaled Big Jim, which notched his 20 wins from 1966 to 1974. (Some race followers contend Big Jim had 19 wins.) Loren Marchand, with 20 wins, is chasing the all-time winningest jockey, Alex Dick, with 32 wins, including 27 on Brownie. Taz won the overall title last year by winning the first three
races before sitting out the final race to preserve the horse’s health. “We’re respecting our horse. We’re not done yet,” said George Marchand last year. He and Loren Marchand trained the horse for three months. “I think that’s a really good idea,” said Loren Marchand, 26, after having the title sewed up last year. “It lets others have a shot at first.” He watched last year’s Sunday race on the riverbank. “It was weird,” he said. “I never would have thought we’d win this many times. I used to be one of those kids that runs down the hill. I knew I wanted to race off that hill one day.” “We can get more championships,” said George Marchand after being doused with water in the paddock area. “We’re going after the records of Brownie and Big Jim. Peasley rode to the overall title in 2005 and 2006 on Reuben and

Suicide Race turns 80 Keller Mountain Race inspires ‘exciting’ addition By Dee Camp The Chronicle OMAK – The World-Famous Suicide Race turns 80 this year. Its roots are in a mountain race run by American Indians for many years in Keller. In 1935, Omak Stampede Publicity Chairman Claire Pentz, in search of something “exciting” to add to the fledgling rodeo, pattered the race after the Keller event. During the Suicide Race,
competitors start 100 or so feet back from the hill’s edge, then race down the embankment and into the Okanogan River. Depending on the water level, they either swim or gallop across the river and then race up the bank and into the Stampede Arena. In 1993, E.E. “Hoagy” Shattuck, a Stampede board member, calculated the hill at a 54.7 percent grade that runs 210 feet from top to bottom. The original race course, used from 1935-52, was slightly west of the current Suicide Hill. The present hill was rented from Mary Ogden for four years, then the property was purchased by Omak Stampede Inc. in 1956. It
now belongs to the city of Omak, as does East Side Park where the Stampede Arena is located. Riders in the 1935 Suicide Race were Leo Crossland, Leonard St. Peter, Tom Woods, Bev Connors, Mathew Dick, Pete Carden, Edward Armstrong, Eddie Parsons, Wallace Moomaw, Alex Dick and Bert Evans. Moomaw placed first, with Conners second and Evans third. The first race attracted what has become an annual parade of news coverage – from newsreels to television and still photographers who have spread images of the Suicide Race throughout the world. It has been featured twice on
TV’s “You Asked for It,” and in dozens of newspapers, a fulllength Walt Disney movie, “Run, Appaloosa, Run,” and on international national and television. The young boy in the movie was Casey Nissen, a Suicide Race champion many times over. Alex Dick, a participant in the first race, became the race’s winningest rider with race victories starting in 1941 and continuing until his retirement in 1970. He died June 16, 2002, at his Omak home at age 83. No competitor has yet matched the winning record of Dick’s horse, Brownie. A

Race from 13 powerful range cayuse, Brownie carried Dick for most of the 53 races he dominated over 36 years. Dick compiled a record of 32 firsts and 12 placings, beginning with a third in the first Suicide Race. During their heyday in the 1950s, the pair won 23 of 28 races, including 11 in a row. Brownie’s dynasty was ended by Big Jim, a powerful bay that appeared in 1966 to sweep both races. Big Jim won both races in 1968 with Omak’s Mervel Allen aboard. They made it a threerace sweep in 1969, the year Stampede added the Friday night rodeo and Suicide Race. Twice more, in 1971 under Don Wood and 1974 under Leo Bruce, Big Jim scored three-race sweeps en route to a history of 20 firsts, seven seconds and a third place finish. The last time Big Jim appeared in a Suicide Race was 1979, scoring a first and a second with Kerry Carden aboard. Since that time, several
horses have launched assaults on the records of Brownie and Big Jim. Until last year, stiff competition kept any from repeating either horse’s marks. But then came Taz. The horse’s first placings came in 2007, with a first, a second and a fourth for fourth-pace overall. Since then, he’s amassed 20 firsts, five seconds, a third and a fourth. And he’s competing again this year. Besides Alex Dick, other competitors have stayed with the race for years. Casey Nissen first raced in 1975 as a 16-year-old. He won the overall title in 1994, 1998 and 2000, and has logged more placings than anyone except Dick. The subject of this exceptional painting is Gilbert White Wolf, Chippewa. He was a dear and old friend of the artist and though he died many summers ago, he is still remembered for his passion and wisdom. He was always the highlight in any powwow or gathering and was happiest when sharing his love of his culture and dance. He inspired many to join and to follow him and encouraged many to learn about their heritage. Gilbert was an advocate for young people and endeavored to instill pride of their culture, the old teachings, a traditional way of life and Chippewa heritage. He was also passionate about bringing back the language. Artist David Craig says that when White Wolf danced he would scream like an eagle and he felt that it was fitting to include a flying eagle in the painting. “That symbol represents the man so well.”

Suicide from 15 and 1995, and again in 2007 after an eight-year hiatus. While most competitors are male, a few women have ridden down the hill. In 1959, Rusty Tawes, a 17year-old from Pendleton, Ore., slipped into town, announcing that she had come to ride in the Suicide Race. That threw the Stampede committee into a frenzy. With former racer Francis Charette as her mentor, Tawes won entry into the race as its first female competitor. Without a saddle – using only a halter and reins – she crossed the finish line in sixth place. In the years since, several other women have competed. Horse owners also play a big role in the race. Some ride, others work in the background organizing the race, bankrolling the horses’ training and so on. Suicide Races have been the grand finale of each rodeo performance since 1945, with a few exceptions. The Saturday race was

The race’s winningest duo, Alex Dick and Brownie, in 1961. canceled in 1942 when cowboy Bev Connors drowned while swimming his horse across the Okanogan River to the race’s starting line. Races were canceled in 1945 when only one entrant signed up, and in 1999 when the Colville Confederated Tribes boycotted Stampede and

the race. There’s also been controversy over the years as animal rights activists protested the race as cruel to the horses. A few horses have died over the years, including 2004 when two horses collided at the bottom of the hill and had to be euthanized and
another collapsed in the arena after the Thursday race. One was lost since then during a practice event. Over the years, Stampede officials – and now the Owners and Jockeys Association – have instituted a number of safety measures, including requiring competitors to wear life vests, requiring horses to demonstrate ahead of the race the ability to go over the hill and swim the river, instituting veterinary checks, placing soft sand on the hill, removing rocks from the river entry and stationing rescue boats in the river. Protests have been fewer in recent years, especially after Stampede officials turned over organization of the race to the Suicide Race Owners and Jockeys Association. Some information in this report and the first 50 years worth of winners in the accompanying chart were compiled by the late John E. Andrist, publisher of The Chronicle for many years. Dee Camp updated the chart, based on Chronicle coverage, to reflect winners during the past 30 years.
