STORY Ananth has been a part of Lulu Group International for more than 20 years, having worked in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, before relocating to Muscat to launch Lulu Hypermarkets in Oman. He is the head of operations for the last 16 years, during which time Lulu has opened 16 Hypermarkets and manages a diversified portfolio of malls, residential and commercial complexes. In the following interview he charts the vast potentials of OAM to meet every shopper’s needs. Could you provide a brief outline of the reach and scope of the Mall? What are the new plans on the agenda? We are now the largest mall in the Sultanate featuring more than 200 outlets with high quality food, fashion and family entertainment, employing more than 3000 locals and expatriates. Soon, we will be announcing the next phase of expansion, including a cinema as well as more retail and family

entertainment options. This development will again create more employment opportunities in Oman, which is one of our core objectives. Detailed plans will be released soon…so stay tuned! What are some of the novelties or innovative concepts that Oman Avenues Mall has introduced, structurally as well as functionally? A major feature of the mall is the creation of twelve specifically designed zones that define the brand mix, each comprising unique

architectural design and cosmetic characteristics, thus enhancing the customer journey significantly. Examples include Beauty Works on the ground floor for great cosmetics and fashion; The Gold Souk on the first floor; Promenade Garden on the second floor for quality cafes and restaurants; and Sky Lounge on the third floor featuring Oman’s first Gold’s Gym, a ladies health spa; and more fine dining options. These are just four of the 12 zones designed throughout the mall. What do you consider to be the greatest asset of your shopping mall? I believe the quality and depth of our brand mix as well as the large number of parking spaces are both strong assets of ours. We recognise that convenience matters to the people of Oman, and having great brands with good parking certainly helps to achieve that. With Muscat witnessing a visible growth in Mall culture, despite the

uproar following the slide in oil prices, how has Oman Avenues Mall carved its niche in the market in a short span of time? What is your USP? We are not noticing any visible impacts of the sliding oil prices here at the mall; in fact, our customer numbers are still growing each and every month. During times of economic downturn, there can be some positive effects for malls also, such as less people leaving the country for travel, which means local spending.

The mall’s family entertainment options are second to none in Oman, with two family entertainment centers, a bowling alley, fun train service and regular kid’s events. This certainly helps set us apart from the competition. From fashion and food to shopping and entertainment, malls are one-stop destinations that are fast turning into weekend haunts. In this context, how important is your Mall’s food court and fine dining outlets in adding to the growing footfall? Extremely important... When planning the mall we understood the local food culture in Oman and recognised the importance of bringing a large number of great quality F&B brands to the mall. We have more than 30 cafés and restaurants located on every level, including the biggest food court in Oman. Has the mall done any work with local Omani ‘not for profit’ organisations? Yes, in fact we have held more than 25 events in the mall since we opened,

supporting many local organisations, including the Oman Cancer Association, Dar Al Atta, The White Hands Centre and many more. One of our most important on-going goals is to connect with the community and strengthen our ties with local groups such as the ones listed above. We have more than a million people visiting the mall each month, and want to leverage that foot fall to help drive awareness for important local causes.

With over 18 SME outlets spread across the mall in designated zones, the dedicated Silk Route on ground floor is thriving with SME retailers who are merchandising a variety of products that are steeped in history and tradition, offering products and services from a wide range of categories, including fragrances, carpets, cosmetics, jewels and pearls, footwear and apparel, honey, sweets, healthcare and more.

The Oman Avenues Mall Management team recognised early on the importance of nurturing Omani SMEs and, accordingly, the Silk Route was designed and built as a way of providing support to the SME imitative. The entire area, including the shops’ internal walls, flooring, glazing and all mechanical/ electrical features were provided by the mall, ensuring an almost ‘turnkey’ operation for the select few tenants who were chosen to participate at the mall.

Be it chocolates with traditional flavours, locally produced honey or heritage clothes, the Silk Route has proven to be a perfect destination for patrons as well as retailers. Like Majid Al Sinani, owner of Temrya Chocolates store and 7 Brothers Footwear store. Excited about the prospect of occupying two shops in one of the busiest malls in Oman, he affirms that the destination Oman Avenues Mall - has been hugely helpful in starting up his SME business.

AVENUES LIFE For East Carpets’ Arif Mohamed Musaid, the outlet’s presence at Silk Route has proven to be an opportunity to connect with new customers from different segments of the market, which would not have been possible in a stand-alone store in another location. According to Mohamed, owner of Anhar Honey, “Silk Route is the ideal location for operators with authentic gourmet products like mine...and, being located at the Oman Avenues Mall, has meant that more people get to sample and try them.” With the focus trained on nurturing SMEs, Oman Avenues Mall has created options for a variety of stores and outlets to operate from different zones in the mall. This has not only helped them reach their target audience at a convenient time and space, it has also helped savour newer levels of success. As Mohamed Abdullatif of Donor Pasha reaffirms, operating from a big mall is inspiring - to say the

least. He states: “To be in a big mall like this is helpful in expanding our customer base. It provides us opportunities to work to very high standards, alongside competitors who have strong market experience and a varied customer profile; it gives us the necessary edge to excel...” Donor Pasha is a local brand, which has taken inspiration from Turkey; it has three branches -Ruwi, Al Hail and OAM. Reiterating similar sentiments, Rahema Al Barwani, owner of Lami’s Fashion (located on first floor), maintains that the outlet’s presence in Oman Avenues Mall has meant that many customers were now patronising her products for the first time. “To be in a big Mall is prestigious; it gives you a chance to be known by visitors and shoppers from different segments of the society,” she explains. Lami’s Fashion handles three brands, including a local brand that goes by the name of the shop - Lami’s (designed and produced exclusively for Rahema’s

outlet), which deals with clothes for girls between the ages of 6 months to 12 years. The other two brands are from France (‘Derby’) and America. For Falah Sulaiman of Muscat Watch Center and Aigner, it is the prospect of bringing newer ideas and experiences to the market, especially for women, that has spurred his business. “Through Oman Avenues Mall we have launched Aigner outlet for the very first time in the Sultanate,” He points out. “We are offering a wide choice of products through our Muscat Watch center, with watches and accessories at a great range of prices,” he adds. Another exciting SME venture is Yaqoob Al Zadjali’s Ruby Tuesday, which is a part of the famous American restaurant chain; the outlet has presence on level 2 in Food Nation. “We have a big and diverse menu of American cuisine,” he states, pointing out that this is the only Ruby Tuesday outlet in Oman. “We hope to bring new and delicious experiences to customers in Oman,” he quips.

Retail Action Innovation is strong in Oman, opines Khalid Al Sulaimany, co-founder of Nawa International and Muscat Gourmet, whose confidence in the future of the retail industry in Oman comes through in the following interview

To begin, kindly provide a brief outline of your business network.

We have diverse business network, as we are an investment company that undertakes turnkey investment projects. We have one of the leading UPVC windows and doors brands in the country, Nawa International UPVC Windows & Doors, and we undertake swimming pool construction under Nawa Pools. We have also made a strong entry into the food and beverage industry with Muscat Gourmet, where we form international-standard concepts in-house.

What, according to you, defines the current retail industry?

Our research and experience shows that the industry tends to lean towards the centre of the pricing spectrum vis–à–vis some of the other GCC neighbours. Price is probably the single most important factor when it comes to devising a retail strategy. When it comes to choices, things are improving day by day and this, in a large way, is helped by large-scale purpose-built shopping malls such as the Oman Avenues Mall. We are at a stage today where brands entering the market may not be catering for today’s market demands, but for tomorrow’s. This is a sign of confidence in the future of the retail industry in Oman.

With so many new malls joining the already established shopping zones in the capital, would you say the retail market is poised for further growth?

Alongside a spurt in the large-scale malls, there is also a drive towards expanding community shopping centres, which have been a cornerstone of the market in the last couple of decades. However, there seems to be a huge focus on the Bausher area where we feel there is a risk of over-saturating the vicinity. We would have liked this infrastructure to be spread all over the city. Muscat is a large city and this is one of the positive characteristics that can be used as an advantage.

What are the common challenges faced by retailers in the current market, which many believe is affected by the slide in oil price? Generally speaking, retailers need stronger planning by both the city planners, and the shopping malls. The choices for retail brands are limited. There also seems to be a tendency to over-charge retailers; this is specially the case on locations where there is no master support from the landlord. This causes a lot of hesitation among retailers to risk opening their businesses.

As an industry watcher, what would you say are the current trends in the retail industry?

Quality is definitely on the up today. This applies to making locations attractive for visitors in terms of the level of brand-de-

velopers that are entering the market. For example, in our F & B group, we have got international calibre brands such as Zen Asian Bistro, our Japanese/Far Eastern fusion restaurant, and Burger Station, under our umbrella. These are concepts we have created ourselves, but they are regularly mistaken for franchises from abroad. In fact, we have had multiple franchise enquiries, both domestically and internationally. Innovation is strong in Oman. As long as they have strong brand consultation, there’s no reason why we can’t drive further growth.

What more needs to be done to keep the industry buoyant and establish a loyal base of shoppers/visitors?

We think that there should be stronger dialogue between the Ministry of Tourism and retail and entertainment centres such as the major shopping

malls here. Programmes and festivals should be far more regular. I’m talking about food festivals, art festivals, music festivals, children centric programs that can act as a catalyst to increase the wow factor that will only benefit retailers all over the country.

Where do you see Oman’s retail industry in the near future? The development pace has been increasing since 2015. We are positive about the prospects here and as an Omani company we are here to stay. That’s why we are opening the country’s first ever Windows & Doors showroom. Our technical partners are from Germany and we have been looking for the right location to set-up a one-of-a-kind stop for home-builders looking for quality windows and doors. We would like more international players to enter the market; however, for that to happen, the environment should become more attractive to enter and invest here.

How does one go about picking the right fit? Do you ever wonder what people really mean when they say someone has ‘great style’, asks Monique Helou, Image Consultant and General Manager of Vivid Trading LLC, as she provides tips and guidelines to find clothes that FIT

T

he reason you think that some people have such good style is simply because they always wear clothes that fit them - and fit them well. When you banish ill-fitting clothes from your life and only allow proper fitting ones in, you open the door to having great style - forever. It is a total lie that you need a certain body type to be truly stylish. Style is not something you are just born with. Being fashionable doesn’t mean a lifetime of shoes that kill, fretting that something is ‘so last season’, or waiting to wear something ‘as soon as I lose 5 pounds.’ And, skinny is not a goal!

The real enemy of great style is FIT. If your clothes don’t fit you properly, you will never look amazing. Once you learn how to tell if a garment is fitting you as it is supposed to, you will be amazed at how much better you look and feel in your clothes. But first things first: you can’t even begin to determine if your clothes are fitting properly if you don’t have a full-length mirror. Once you have got that covered, you can move on to banishing bad fit from your life because great fit equals great style - ALWAYS.

The Right Pants: l l l l

Choose the right pants with the right rise for your natural waist Avoid a poorly set zipper that pulls, gaps, and falls down slowly Avoid pants that pull and ‘whisker’ at the crotch or groin area when you try them on Pants that pull and wrinkle across the very tops of your thighs will cause them to fit poorly everywhere else, too.

A Better Skirt:

Don’t choose a skirt that doesn’t sit properly at your natural waistline - not your hips. This helps the skirt stay in place all day long without shifting or twisting. For ladies with bigger hips, buy your skirts in a size that fits you through the hips and thighs correctly - then have a tailor add darts at the waistband to provide more shape, keeping the skirt firmly in place. Once you start paying close attention to fit and stop fooling yourself into buying things just because they happen to be ‘in style’, you will be amazed at how much better you look and feel in your clothes. Learning what works for you, fit-wise, and being happy with it is the key to real, lasting satisfaction with your style.
