WATERWHEELS STEAMSHIP (bakherat al nuwaear) THE CONCEPT In the Fifties of the last century. the British BBC radio announced a competition for a literary article to describe a place that affected you and entered your depth and most stuck in mind, Mr. Talal Salem Al Hadethy write an article about his beautiful river island (Hawijat Haditha) where he lived named it (bakherat al nuwaear). He described it in the form of steam ship that was moved by the waterwheels (nuwaear) on its side while small boats transported people who live in AL Hawija from and to the blanks of the river every day stream ship. Mr. Talal win the first prize for the best article (5 Iraqi denar) and the article was published on the radio.

In the Seventies on the last century the Euphrates overflowed and flooded most of the island so most of the houses and important historical places like mosques and watch towers where sank due to flooding. Al Farooq Mosque is one of the oldest historical mosques as it was built in the year 13 AH. But this mosque re constructed in 2000s and most of its historical feature have been changed without attention to the importance of history. Bourg Al Maftool is one of the many towers that were present on the island and it’s the only one still present today but it’s in a bad condition.
The waterwheel (nuwaear) locater on both side of the island to raise water from the river irrigation and drinking in the past. but now it has been neglected and none of them are there anymore. The small boats that were a were means of transportation between the island and river blank were abandoned due to construction of pontoon bridge,
1.
The topographic nature of the island is
gradual as the island rises in its northern part more than 8 meters above the level of the river and gradually reaches at the end of the South Island to no more than 1 meter, The northern part of the island has never occurred and has drowned before because it is significantly above
the river level. The idea was to separate the high northern part from the low southern part by digging the central area and taking advantage of this sand to raise the level of the southern part of the island to prevent its sinking in the event of any future flooding.
2.
Re-implementing all the waterwheels the
island and benefiting from them in generating electricity from their rotation, in addition to their main benefit in raising the river water for watering and others, And the construction of stone barriers (The Sker) that raise the water level and increase the speed of water flow to increase the efficiency of hemophilia in generating electricity

3. Lifting the main roads 6 meters above the island level and designed in the form of pedestrian’s bridges raised on columns in order to separate the general movement of tourists from the private movement of the Indigenous, these bridges are connected to the roofs of the buildings on the island, So the main entrance to these buildings will be on the roof instead of the ground floor. This will activate the roofs of buildings with many events such as markets, gardens and seating areas overlooking the river, these bridges become a route for tourist over the island and a journey around all the island's important landmarks over the water and around the waterwheels, And confine Below a private swimming space. And it's connected to the lower roads with ramps, the bridges look like the Side passages on the deck of the ship, these bridges connect all functions together, there is a special around road on these bridges for bicycles and smart electric cars that transport tourists and residents to different parts of the island connected to a parking in the southern part of the island containing a shade of solar panels that generate electricity, and charge electric cars and, another parking under the mall, what distinguishes this island is that there are no cars roads, The cars packing at the end of the bridges. These bridges also have shades made of wood and palm fronds Climbing on them the grape trees that are frequently cultivated in that island to shade the pedestrians on the bridges. In addition to a rest area and swings for children made of wood and palm fronds

4. Design a Ferris wheel in a form of a large waterwheel (naur) on the north side of these bridges It is one of the most important and highest landmarks of the island and its height is 30 meters, part of it is underwater He takes his passengers in a closed booth to the highest point to see the whole city and then below the surface of the river to experience the movement of the waterwheels. The Ferris wheel automatically moves with the movement of water and works the work of waterwheels and raises the river water to the upper bridges This water runs inside a water bar’s to be utilized to irrigate the island's plants with a system called the floppy sprinkler system. and it's a new idea to irrigate crops by installing a new type of sprinkler under bridges this system lowers temperatures below it by more than 10 degrees Celsius.
Cultural Center 4. Design a sustainable powerful cultural center to attractive to tourists and residents of the city to be a center for the neighborhoods of cultures, crafts, customs and traditions that disappear, such as the small boat industry (Balm) and the waterwheels, which are considered one of the most important famous elements in the island and fishing as well as many other crafts that the islanders are famous for its carpentry, sewing, molasses and olive oil Solar panels are spread on the entire roof of the building and cool these panels with, the water running in the pipes underneath them to get the best efficiency of these panels, because they lose their efficiency in high temperatures, the water collects in the form of a waterfall in the center of the cultural center this waterfall represents the culture, knowledge and science that pass on between generations.

Sustainable Houses 5.
Sustainable redesign of houses to

islanders
functions
with
a
distribution that provides all houses with views of the river and its two types, the first one has a basement that work as a small workshop for the residents of the house. They make their local products
from dates molasses, olive oil or any characters such as knitting, carpentry, etc. These products are transported to the roofs of the houses, which has a small shades
market.
connected
with the
pedestrian bridges that tourists walk on to display and sell products, these houses have a windcatcher (badger) to ventilate the house naturally. And solar panels to generate the electricity the house needs, and it has a private garden on the ground floor and a garden overlooking the river on the roof of the house, And the second type is less space and without a basement, these houses are sustainable in terms of materials, treatments and construction methods as they are built with stones that are abundantly available on site and that's because of the many destroyed buildings. These stone walls are covered with a mixture of mud and hay. This method of construction is common in that area, as this type of construction is more heatinsulating than others. In addition to the use of wood in the shanachels and shades
Because of its availability of a lot of palm trees,

9. Replacement of floating bridges that hinder boat traffic with bridges raised with columns directly linked to the island's pedestrians’ bridges, design a fishing area under the bridge instead of dangerous fishing on the sides of floating bridges and make this area for fishing and a gathering area for fishermen to see by tourists and visitors, in addition to boat anchors that will stimulate the movement of boats in the river

10. Activating archaeological areas by adding a new function, like adding a small museum next to al-Faruq Mosque and returning all the relics that were underneath it, the second mosque on the island, The Krezah Mosque, is located very close to the residential units to continue its use as a mosque, add popular cafés, restaurants and cafeterias near the area where the Maftool overlooks the Euphrates River to become a gathering area
11. Service buildings are distributed in 1.management in the center of the island and water, 2.electricity and waste stations on small islands nearby to be separated from them, 3.in addition to Machines that collecting waste from the river water that collects waste and transports it to the station and treatment

BRING OUT THE BEST YOURSELF Concept (The spirit of architectural space) Space is about architecture and all space users are architectural students. I wanted to bring it to the spirit of architecture in space as well as reading. Renowned architect Moath al-Alosi says that a successful architect spends more time in the library than at the ceremony to read a close and important connection to architecture. So I used multiple construction methods used to build buildings, bridges, buildings with wood and ropes, or to hide wood (the main building material) in parts of the design and show it elsewhere, as architectural designers do in the construction of large buildings. In my design, I relied heavily on wood, which is the basis of all the design. Language of design is futuristic Materials used in recycled wood panels from sawdust And the ropes and the cork or the fat.
