Take a look at this spread—what do you see? Many beaches, swimsuits and beautiful women, MJ DAY yes. But look more closely, and something deeper and more dazzling emerges. For though all of these women clearly won some kind of genetic lottery, as a group they look, well, just like us. Black, white, brown. Thin, athletic, curvy. Confident in the prime of youth, no less fierce in middle age. In the 33 women featured in this issue you see the essence of SI Swimsuit: our conviction that beautiful has no bounds and shines brightest through authenticity, acceptance and attitude. At 56, Kathy Jacobs radiates as powerfully as any of the Swimsuit rookies half her age. Christie Valdiserri has built a modeling career despite losing her hair to alopecia. And Valentina Sampaio makes history as the first transgender model to appear in the Swimsuit Issue. We celebrate the idea of many, not one, on this year’s covers, too. (Subscribers will see three models as a group, while each gets her own cover available on newsstands.) The women—Kate Bock, Olivia Culpo and Jasmine Sanders—have their own looks, their own backgrounds and, as you’ll hear in the weeks ahead, their own stories to tell. Like all the women in this issue, and like all of you reading, they followed their own unique paths to this moment. The beauty in SI Swimsuit lies in those paths, and the stories the travelers have to tell.

Marquita Pring I’m certified in scuba. I haven’t gone in a few years, because I had a really traumatic experience—but it ended fine. When you run out of oxygen 90 feet below the surface, it’ll change you for a little bit.

Kim Riekenberg I like to paint on a big canvas, just really simple stuff, whatever comes to my mind. I’m very critical of my paintings. Mostly they stay in a corner, but I was thinking of selling them and donating the money to charity.

Marquita, who got back to safety by using her instructor’s buddy hose, cofounded ALDA, a coalition with four other models to empower women and change the perception of beauty.

Aspiring artist Kim—a native of Hamburg, Germany—says that the site of her shoot, Wyoming, was “one of the most impressive landscapes I have ever seen. It all looked like paintings.”

Valentina Sampaio The first job that I had, they canceled the shoot because they felt I wasn’t a good match for the brand—just because I was trans. I felt so sad, and I felt wronged. I had to have a little time to connect with my inner strength. I thought, I have a chance to fight not just for myself, but for every person like me that faces prejudice and discrimination. Valentina, who grew up in a remote fishing village in Brazil, studied to be a fashion designer before becoming a model. Photograph by JOSIE CLOUGH Swimsuit by ANDI BAGUS @andi_bagus

Lorena Duran I love speed. I love cars, motorcycles. I love the adrenaline of it all—any sport where there is risk involved like skydiving, bungee jumping, anything that gives you adrenaline. Before she got her start in the modeling business, Lorena, who is from Seville, Spain, worked as a lab technician. Photograph by JOSIE CLOUGH Swimsuit by ASARA SWIM @asaraswim

CL ASS OF 2020

I have this affinity for cold places. I got engaged under the Northern Lights in Finland; that same week we had gone snorkeling with orcas in Norway. I think Greenland is next. That’s where we say Santa Claus is from if you’re a Dane—not the North Pole.

Josephine was born in Copenhagen to gay parents. A strong advocate for LGBTQ rights, she spoke at the Stonewall 50 celebration in New York City, alongside Lady Gaga and Chelsea Clinton.

I caught four little fish with my hands when I was eight. My grandfather will never let me forget it. When he heard I’d be in the Swimsuit Issue, he said, ‘You’ll always be catching fish with your hands to me.’

That’s not to say there are no people around. Take Bruce and Beth White. They acquired Brush Creek Ranch near the city of Saratoga

in 2008 and have since grown it into a 30,000-acre collection of resorts that have anything a traveler could possibly want. Magee Homestead is a relaxing, adults-

When in cowboy country, do as cowboys do. Horseback riding is a popular pastime, and if you’re feeling up to it you can take part in a cattle drive. The resort has 100-plus miles of hiking trails, and there are plenty more in the neighboring Medicine Bow National Forest, which is also home to amazing fly fishing. Unwinding after a long day of punching dogies is easy. Three nights a week there’s live music, which is best enjoyed with a cocktail: The Clay Pigeons features the resort’s own barrel-aged rye whiskey and is served in a smoked glass.

In the mid-19th century, the Cheyenne Club was a famed place where cattle barons and starlets hobnobbed. Brush Creek reimagined that with its own Cheyenne Club (below), which serves meals with ingredients raised on the ranch and in its 20,000-square-foot greenhouse.

only spot with haute cuisine, spa treatments and cheese-making classes. French Creek Sportsmen’s Club is geared toward the outdoor set, with fishing, hunting and sport shooting. The property’s original resort, the Lodge and Spa, offers something in between: rustic amenities with plenty of luxury. Brush Creek has its own distillery, brewery and creamery, plus a 94-yard tunnel housing a world-class wine collection. Lest you forget you are on a working ranch, you can dine on Wagyu beef that was raised on site. (307-327-2031, rooms from $1,000)

SUBLIME SAMANA In a country known for its wide array of flavors and cultures, rustic meets trendy in the former fishing village of Las Terrenas

DESTINATION

K AT E P O W E R S ; C O U R T E S Y O F S U B L I M E S A M A N A H OT E L & R E S I D E N C E S ( 3 )

The Dominican Republic is one of the most culturally and geographically diverse countries in the world. On the northeast coast is Las Terrenas, a

former fishing village that has evolved into a cosmopolitan town. The process is ongoing; visit now and you’ll see just as many fruit stands as boutiques.

ACCOMMODATION

If you’ve constructed the ideal place to stay on the Samaná Peninsula, you might as well pick a name that reflects that. Opened in 2012,

In addition to gorgeous beaches and elite cuisine, Sublime Samana offers world-class pampering at its Coconut Whispers Spa. The Mangrove Dew massage is a 100-minute luxuriation that includes time in a sweat lodge, a mud wrap and a coconut-milk bath.

the Sublime Samana Hotel & Residences was designed in a modern, minimalist style—but rest assured, there’s nothing minimal about the amenities. The 26 rooms, ranging from one-bedroom suites to threebedroom casitas, all feature a view of either the garden or the ocean. In keeping with the area’s diverse cultural mash-up, the food at the resort’s signature restaurant, Bistro, is an exciting fusion of flavors. Think gnocchi, only instead of potatoes, it’s made from bananas. (888-896-9416, rooms from $300 to $1,000) sublimesamana.com

AUGUST 2020

RECREATION

One of the best times to visit the area is in the winter, when the snowbirds are joined by 2,500 humpback whales. When not watching the 30-ton mammals, visitors can enjoy the beaches of Las Terrenas, which offer fantastic surfing. And just a half-hour away is the starting point for a hike to the 170-foot-high El Limon waterfall. You can walk there, but you’re better off going on horseback and saving your energy for the nightlife in Las Terrenas, where clubs offer bachata and merengue dancing into the wee hours.

IT WAS AROUND 5 A.M. on December 1, 2019, the biggest day of Caroline Marks’s professional career, when the phenom surfer woke up. She usually gets up early on competition days to stretch and visualize how the event might feel, but it had been more than a month since her last World Surf League women’s Championship Tour event so she was especially eager.

The season finale, held at Honolua Bay, in Maui, was doubly significant. Not only would it decide the tour championship (Marks came into the event in third place), but it would also be the last event in determining the U.S. team for the Tokyo Olympics, where surfing is to make its debut. The two top-ranked competitors in the world standings would make the team, so Marks needed to leapfrog a competitor. The phenom was nervous, “probably the most nervous I was in my life,” she says, yet excited to see how she would react.

The competition was a series of headto-head battles. When one of the competitors she had to pass lost her heat, Marks knew that a win in the round of 16 would propel her into the top two. Riding a new board on waves relatively unknown to her, the 5' 5" California resident blocked out event distractions and focused inward. “The waves were absolutely firing,” she says. With her parents and all five of her siblings rooting her on, she attacked the building swell, showing incredible grace

under pressure. For 30 minutes, she carved the face of countless Honolua Bay waves, darting toward their lips, showing a confident array of speed and power throughout her exacting maneuvers. When the horn sounded to conclude the heat, she had outpointed her opponent, Coco Ho. Her Olympic dream had come true. “It was one of the most special moments in my career, in my life,” she says. In just two years on the Championship Tour, the 18-year-old Marks has cemented herself as one of the top competitors in a fast-growing sport that will capture a whole new set of eyes in the Olympics. Those who have been around longer, though, have had a closer view of surfing’s evolution. When she was 16, Courtney Conlogue, who’s now 27, wrote Billie Jean King a letter asking the tennis champion for guidance on how to take surfing to the next level, especially for female competitors. King’s foundation wrote back, stressing the importance of men and women working together. Both the men’s and women’s tours now practice alongside each other. And in September 2018, the WSL announced that male and female competitors would be paid equitably, still a rarity among U.S. pro sports. “It’s one of the coolest things the World Surf League has done in showing that in surfing, fairness and equality matters,” says Conlogue, a two-time WSL runner-up. “It’s been inspiring.” The Santa Ana, Calif., native has childhood memories of being the only girl at events. But with larger purses, female surfers will likely be encouraged to pursue the sport professionally. “Surfing brings this AUGUST 2020

healing effect and this empowering effect,” says Conlogue, who also participates in a program that looks to empower young girls and women through surf and another that takes children with special needs or disabilities surfing. “Anytime I get to pass that along to others, I love to.” To thrive in the throes of the ocean takes a fearless tenacity coupled with constant adaptation. Malia Manuel, a 26-year-old Hawaii native who says she “grew up on the beach,” describes the sport as a “dance with the environment.” Manuel strives to obtain a “flow state” in the water, creating an uncluttered mind that can ride out the last gasp of ocean energy before it dissipates under the shore. Every wave is different from each other. Decisions about positioning and tactics are instantaneous. Marks says she just “does what feels right” in the water. Conlogue explains, “You follow your intuitive instincts and just have faith in the process.” But such faith stems from hours of repetition. Manuel, who won the U.S. Open at 14, says she wakes up daily at around 5 a.m. before surfing mid-morning. She’ll take part in weight training and yoga sculpt, an obsession of hers at the moment. Conlogue is also an early riser, though a concussion in an October event cut short the end of her 2019 season and altered her routine. “It’s just Mother Nature,” she says. “I always think life puts you on certain paths, and you just gotta listen and learn, and reinvent and re-create.” Due to the coronavirus pandemic, those in the WSL have had to adjust in a substantial way, as all early-season events were postponed or canceled. Marks was at home in San Clemente, Calif., when her father, Darren, told her that the Tokyo Olympics had been delayed until summer of 2021. Marks found some positivity in the delay. “One more year to train, one more year to make sure everything’s healthier,” she says. She has already watched videos of past opening and closing ceremonies in anticipation. She’s tried picturing what it’ll feel like to represent the U.S in women’s surfing. “It’s a dream come true,” Marks says. “I’m so stoked.” 58

Turks & Caicos

BEACH ENCLAVE Who brought me this delicious cocktail? At one of the most relaxing resorts in the islands, chances are the butler did it

DESTINATION

Without a doubt, the premier luxury destination in the Caribbean is Turks & Caicos, an archipelago of 40 islands and cays (only eight of which

are inhabited) popular with A-listers as well as families. The population is nearly 40,000, but it’s a true melting pot, with expats from more than 50 countries.

ACCOMMODATION

Most of the action in Turks & Caicos takes place on Providenciales, the most populous island. One of the most opulent places to stay

Beach Enclave offers a variety of options. Beachfront villas (below) have a private, secluded beach and an ocean-facing kitchen, while the villas in Long Bay sit on lots that are nearly one acre each with a deck, summer kitchen and fire pit.

RECREATION

Even if you’re not as adept in the water as the athletes on this shoot, there’s something for you. A stay at Beach Enclave includes an activity—a kiteboard lesson, a cruise, snorkeling or an eco tour—with a local water adventure company. And if you’re looking to make a new friend, Beach Enclave works with Potcake Place, a local outfit that finds homes for dogs. (They were named potcakes because locals would feed them the caked remains of a cooking pot.) You can adopt a pup for a day, giving yourself a great companion for a stroll on the beach.

is Beach Enclave, a collection of luxury villas, all with their own heated infinity pools. Make no mistake: You will be pampered. Each villa comes with a dedicated butler, who will do everything from bring you a drink on the beach to teach you how to cook pad thai. You don’t have to do the cooking, though. The resort’s private chefs hail from all over the world, and they’ll make you anything you want, whenever you want it. In other words: sushi for breakfast and pancakes for dinner! SOORI BALI Serenity. Now. It’s easy to find on the peaceful Hindu enclave in the Indian Ocean known as the Island of the Gods

DESTINATION

East of Java lies the island of Bali, a province of Indonesia. Unlike the rest of the country, which has the world’s largest Muslim population,

most residents of Bali practice Balinese Hinduism. Evidence of spirituality is everywhere, from the countless temples to Bali’s nickname: the Island of the Gods.

ACCOMMODATION

About those temples: There are 10 on the grounds of the Soori Bali resort, which is located in Tabanan, a pristine region in the southwest

Soori Bali takes its food seriously: The day starts with a gourmet tasting menu for breakfast and ends at Ombak (below), the resort’s premium restaurant that offers spectacular views of the sunset. The signature dish is Volcanic Chicken, cooked in sand pits right on the beach.

RECREATION

There’s no better way to tap into the island’s vibe than to watch the sunrise at Tanah Lot, a 16th-century temple that sits on an outcrop of volcanic rock. A tour of nearby Kerambitan provides insight into traditional Balinese village life, while more adventurous types might go for a jungle ATV tour or an elephant safari. But you’ll want to save plenty of time to spend on Kelating Beach. As if you could forget the soft, sparkling black volcanic sand, Soori Bali sends guests home with an hourglass filled with it to serve as a reminder to treasure time.

part of the island. (Guests can receive a morning blessing from a priestess as she makes her rounds.) The resort, which sits between lush rice paddies and mountains on one side and volcanic cliffs and the Indian Ocean on the other, actually grew out of a family’s private vacation home. When friends saw the house and location, they asked for villas to be built nearby. Now Soori Bali has 48 villas of varying size (the smallest of which is an impressive 2,240 square feet), each with its own pool. (855-231-8499, rooms from $750)

Turks & Caicos

GRACE BAY CLUB There’s something for everyone at this dazzling destination located on the best beach in Turks & Caicos—or the world

DESTINATION

A place so nice we went there twice: Turks & Caicos, the same island paradise where we staged our surfers photo shoot. Why double

up? Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the beach at Grace Bay has been named best in the world by Tripadvisor twice in the past four years.

ACCOMMODATION

You won’t have a problem finding the right size digs at Grace Bay Club, which has studios, a 13-bedroom house and everything in

Y U T S A I ; C O U R T E S Y O F G R AC E B AY C L U B ( 3 )

Got a big group? Or maybe a big group with one loner? Located a short drive from the resort in a gated enclave, the private Residence villas have total living space of up to 6,500 square feet and five bedrooms: four in the house and one in a private, detached cottage.

between. The resort’s properties have 12 restaurants, with signature dishes ranging from a light conch salad to a 28-ounce prime tomahawk steak (the menu says it’s for two, but it’s not like that’s a law or anything). And let’s face it, island life is about cocktails as much as cuisine. At 90 feet, Grace Bay’s Infiniti Bar is the longest bar in the Caribbean, and the resort has a signature drink: the Fish Hook, the recipe of which is a secret. True to its name, it will leave you hooked. (649-946-5757, rooms from $500) gracebayclub.com

RECREATION

Taking advantage of the beach and lounging by the pool are the most common pastimes, but activities abound. Bight Reef is the top snorkeling spot in Providenciales. It extends approximately 350 feet from the beach and has a snorkel trail with markers on the sea floor to guide you along. You won’t be alone in the water. Keep an eye out for Jojo, a male dolphin who is so friendly toward humans that the government declared him a national treasure. He’s known to frequent the waters off Grace Bay Beach.

British Virgin Islands

SCRUB ISLAND RESORT The private Caribbean island—a haven for sailors, snorkelers and anglers—served as a spicy backdrop for our shoot

DESTINATION

Scrub Island is a serene, 230-acre dot located in the British Virgin Islands. According to legend, pirates would drop anchor there and

scrub the barnacles off their boats, giving the island its name. (Though it’s possible they just wanted to hang out on the pristine beaches and work on their tans.)

ACCOMMODATION

You don’t have much choice of where to stay when visiting: The only thing on the private island is the Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina. But

avoid getting sandy, there’s a lagoon-style, four-tiered pool with waterfalls and a swim-up bar. (877-890-7444, rooms from $399) scrubisland.com

RECREATION

There’s ample opportunity for fun on the water or in it. The shallows that surround the island and the many reefs and coves are perfect for snorkeling. Head out into deeper water and visit the North Drop, one of the best spots in the world for tuna and blue marlin fishing. The marina is also home to a sailing school for sea dogs of all levels.

Opened in 2010, Scrub Island Resort was the first new resort development in the BVI in 20 years. Its marina has slips for 55 boats— including five that can accommodate yachts of up to 170 feet. If boating’s not your thing (yet), fear not: There’s a sailing school on site.

that’s O.K., because there’s no other place you’d want to be. Each of the resort’s guest rooms, suites and hillside villas offers a dramatic view of the Caribbean, and they are decorated with a distinctive West Indies feel. The food also evokes the location. The signature restaurant, which overlooks the marina and pool, is called Cardamom & Co. Its fare is both delicious and enlightening, as the menu tells the story of the spice trade and its impact on the local culture. The resort has three beaches, but if you’d prefer to

CHART YOUR COURSE. AND FEEL FREE TO WANDER. Uncover the true spirit of the Caribbean from sunup to sundown. Learn how you can stay on land where endless possibilities are just a beach away, or explore out at sea with the wind in your sails. Wherever your compass takes you, envision a trip that will be one of a kind. We are keeping Nature’s Little Secrets safe for you.
