Omar Othman

Omar Othman is an inventive, creative, and selfmotivated Architect with 5+ years of experience working with multiple architectural offices in the Middle East and North Africa. He holds a bachelor’s degree in architectural design from Petra University in Jordan and is currently a full-time Design Architect at HAK Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Working with HAK for the past four years has offered him the opportunity to work on a diverse range of urban planning and architectural projects and helped him harness various skill sets. While working with HAK, Omar had the chance to work and engage with some of the world’s most reputable Architectural and Consulting firms, which was a huge stepping stone in his career.

Omar developed intensive design experience working on different architectural and interior design projects. In addition to winning several regional and international architectural and creative design competitions.

RED SEA STAR LIGHT HOUSE

PART OF MASTERPLAN DEVELOPMENT COMPETITION / FIRST PLACE

Project Brief

As part of Jeddah’s Central Development master plan Competition, the Red Sea Star Light House is designed to stand as an Iconic Landmark for the new waterfront development project. A welcoming sculpture for the city’s Marina visitors.

The Concept

Inspired by the Manjur Pattern which is considered one of Jeddah’s most interesting architectural heritage characteristics. The Manjur pattern can be described as lattice grilles of wood or a shish net, which are always on the top part of the Roshan or the Mashrabiyah.

Taking the Manjur pattern as the baselines for the Lighthouse body, and the waves of the Red Sea as the sculpting force, the final design appears as a dynamically sculpted and eyecatching monument that serves the purpose of an iconic landmark that is inspired by Jeddah heritage.

NUR THE HIDDEN MINARET

JEDDAH, SAUDI ARABIA 2019

CONCEPTUAL ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION / FIRST PLACE

Project Brief

The concept of this design is to create a simple and modern minaret that originates from the original shape of a traditional minaret with the emphasis of Nur (light).

During the day it stands out as a monument and during the night it reveals the hidden minaret within its walls with the use of Nur (light) and transparent concrete.

CONCEPT DIAGRAM

The Hidden Minaret Concept

The hidden minaret shape is displayed through a sculpture of negative space, mimicking a traditional minaret. It is made of fiber optic light mesh. The design can be used to display multiple shapes of a minaret with respect to the city’s history and surroundings. The lower body of the minaret will serve as a reading room with spiritual feelings.

Nur :

The word nur, or its derivatives, occurs forty-nine times in the Quran. It is used in reference to God, Muhammad, the Quran, the Book, the Torah, the moon and the faithful men and women. Al-nur is often used in combination with zulumat (darkness) in terms that describe movement from darkness into light, and from ignorance into faith. (Wikipedia)

TINY KIWI MEDITATION CABIN

HAURAKI PLAINS, NEW ZEALAND 2021

BEE BREEDERS’ SMALL SCALE ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION / FIRST PLACE

Project Brief

The Tiny Kiwi Meditation Cabin Competition is part of Bee Breeders’ Small Scale Architecture Appreciation Movement showcasing small projects that contain big ideas. Designers were tasked with proposing an ecofriendly cabin located alongside the Hauraki Plains in New Zealand.

The idea of the cabin is to create a minimalistic object that blends with its surroundings yet maintains a distinctive impression when approaching it.

MORPHOLOGY DIAGRAM

Morphology

The cabin consists of three parts: a wooden structure, a series of platforms, and an adjustable semi-translucent fabric that covers the cabin. The form of the cabin and the materials used provide full views of the beautiful sky and landscape while creating an inviting, warm, and relaxing place for the user.

Hidden Storage unit

Interior space

The interior space holds several interesting features that help create the ultimate meditation experience. There is a uniquely designed fireplace with a slim chimney hanging from the drop beams. Those drop beams hold LED spotlights powered with solar panels to light up the space during night sessions. In addition, the main platform contains a hidden storage underneath for storing any necessary equipment.

Spatial Journey

The rear part of the cabin holds an open terrace with a set of bowls that can be used for flower essence processing. The fabric skin helps in diffusing sunlight as it enters the interior space, also the height of it can be adjusted using a pulley to control the amount of sunlight entering the space as well as to cover the meditation area once the session is over.

AUSTRALIA’S BUSHFIRES MEMORIAL

Project Brief

The Year 2020 Had so many tragic and devastating events that overwhelmed the whole world. One of these events was the tragic bushfires that took place in several cities in Australia. The apocalyptic bushfires that started in September burnt more than 15.6 million acers and killed at least 25 people and experts also estimate that over one billion animals have died due to the fires. There were so many photos that have been shared all over the social media, but one memorable one was that of a Koala holding on to a fireman as he escaped the burning forest.

The Memorial itself is a set of colored glass panels on a metal platform. The colors of the glass panels reflect the colors of a fire. Between these glass panels are a set of black metal plates cutouts of endangered species of Australia. Also on the first Glass set of glass panels there is a list of all these endangered species.

Located In the Heart of Jeddah, The Hampton Hotel represents a modern interpretation of the Hijazi Architectural Style. The Location of the hotel influenced the design of the main facades, as special window treatments were made to ensure the privacy of all the adjacent residential buildings.

Concept Inspirations

AlUla is a destination of extraordinary human and natural heritage, encompassing more than 200,000 years of unexplored human history. Deep in the beautiful deserts of the northwestern region of the country, AlUla is home to countless historic treasures, including the Nabatean city of Hegra - Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site, the tombs of Dadan - the stone-built capital of the Dadanite and Lihyanite Kingdoms, and the ancient ruins of AlUla Old Town - a prominent pitstop for pilgrims in the 12th century.
