RAJ REWAL Innovative Architecture and Tradition Essays by Kenneth Frampton and Suha Ozkan

FORTHCOMING

A distinguished doyen of architecture from India, Raj Rewal has, for long, set global precedents with his urban narratives of design that have been integrally and richly steeped in their contextual inferences. The concerted juxtaposition of traditional concepts and contemporary syntax is reflective of his fascination for weaving expressions of heritage and history into a modern vocabulary, often revealing layer upon layer of intuitive interpretation and deep meaning. Effortlessly threading together episodes of design, he merges scale with surroundings and geometry with rhythm, binding space with structure and nuance, modulating form and light, and coursing the exterior through the interior, to create a series of interconnected experiences that are as distinct as they are together. Across a repertoire of residential, housing, public and institutional buildings, his work is characterised by concern for climatic sensitivity, humane architecture and the promotion of craftsmanship and new technologies.

THE POWER OF YOGA Yamini Muthanna

FORTHCOMING

The Power of Yoga explores the profound nature of yoga, not by professing ancient Sanskrit texts or philosophies, but by demystifying them and making them relevant to our time and age. While the Yoga Sutras (ancient texts) have provided us a road map to understand the path of this science, 21 yoga sequences for modern lifestyle-related maladies makes them accessible to the modern-day practitioner in a language he or she can relate to, without taking away from the authenticity of the technique. This book primarily contains a ‘Sequence Manual’, which offers customised yoga routines to aid people to cope better with their day-to-day demanding schedules. Ultimately, it seeks to bring readers closer to the deeper meaning of yoga and encourages them to explore it even further.

TAJ MAHAL Multiple Narratives

Taj Mahal: Multiple Narratives is proposed as a new perspective on the Taj Mahal and Agra. The city and its iconic monuments have often been written about exclusive of each other. Many stories from Agra form the pillars on which the Taj Mahal was built. Pleasure gardens or a dusty township of the Middle Ages, Agra has many dimensions. The book will look at global events, national events and showcase contemporary buildings and subsequent events which transformed it from a sacred personal space to the World’s Heritage. The book is proposed to be a broader and more accessible understanding of these stories, of Agra and the Taj Mahal.

THE NAGAS The Lost Tribes of India’s Northeast Bano Haralu

FORTHCOMING People/Culture/Customs Binding Hardback Size 241 × 305 mm Pages 192 Rights World

For many years, the only stories told to the outside world about Nagaland, a fourth-world indigenous cultural group, centred around their love of head-hunting. But the land itself is populated by esoteric tribals collectively known as the Nagas. The tales of their respective origins are found in myths, songs and poetry, or lost to time. There are sixteen major tribes and several other sub-tribes, each with a distinct dialect, not comprehensible to the others. Often, the tribes are distinguished by their colourful woven shawls. Today, head-hunting does not exist and that changed with the advent of Christianity—now the dominant religion of the state. Here we bring you an incredible photo-documentary, accompanied by an authentic text, which reveals a beautiful land that time forgot. BANO HARALU, a blue-blooded Naga of the Zeliang tribe, was born and brought up in Nagaland. She has worked for major television companies for several years and now divides her time between Nagaland and Kolkata. She has won the Chameli Devi award for excellence in rural reporting.

Shammi Kapoor The Untold Story

Shammi Kapoor was the first to take on the sacrosanct image of the holier-than-thou Bollywood Hero. His contribution, like Dilip Kumar’s, has seeped into the mainstream of popular Hindi cinema to become a part of the larger tradition, which generation after generation of actors have continued to draw from. Yet, if Shammi’s talent went unacknowledged for long, it had something to do with the failure of the critics of the time to comprehend his highly individualist style and swagger. The brazenness with which he violated the image of the conventional hero made them pass him over as a freak. But the Shammi Kapoor legacy has stood the test of time.

Romantic and indulgent in most of her writings till the very end, Amrita Pritam’s writings influenced at least two or three generations of Punjabi writers, especially young women who took to expressing their inner turmoil through engaging verse. She was often criticised by purists for her unconventional and defiant outlook and often dubbed a feminist because she sought to translate the agony, the pain, the aspirations of her women protagonists, both in and out of wedlock. In many ways, the same concerns are evident in most of her poems, some of which have been included in this volume.

Unanointed and Other Stories paints a portrait of 21st-century India. The stories delineate a ground view of India that Indians find themselves in, which is not necessarily the India that the rest of the world ‘reads’ it to be. India today is an extremely interesting space to watch—it is a site of rapid economic progress of sub-Saharan levels of indigence, of political contestation and of economic and religious negotiations. And these different ‘Indias’ are intersecting in intriguing ways. Each of the short stories untangles threads of this skein. Priya Virmani is a London-based economic and political analyst. She was awarded a PhD by the University of Bristol, UK, and then specialised in Emerging Economies at Harvard University. She is the founder of ‘Paint Our World’, a humanitarian art project that works with underprivileged children.

The hugely popular 1917 Bengali novella Devdas by the celebrated author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay has, since the silent era, inspired numerous film versions in various Indian languages. It is, however, Bimal Roy’s 1955 film with its excellent and subtle dialogue, fluid direction and sublime cast that is still widely considered the most important adaptation in Hindi/Urdu.

Born in Sialkot (now in Pakistan) in 1915, Rajinder Singh Bedi was an eminent Urdu writer with a varied and distinguished literary and film career that spanned fifty years. An important member of the Progressive Writers Association, Bedi authored seventy short stories and many novels. He won several awards for his literary work, including the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1965 for his classic Urdu novella, Ek Chadar Maili Si. His exceptional film dialogue shows his leanings towards a natural and realistic language. This gifted writer died in 1984, aged sixty-nine. Sahir Ludhianvi was born into a rich landowning family in Ludhiana in 1921. In 1943, he published Talkhiyaan, his first hugely successful collection of poems. Forming a team with SD Burman, in 1951 he began working as a film lyricist. His contribution to Hindi cinema remains unrivalled. This most popular and talented poet/songwriter died in 1980, aged sixty-one. Notes on translator: London-based documentary filmmaker, cinema historian and author, Nasreen Munni Kabir was the first to present Indian film dialogue in a three-language format, starting with Mughale-Azam, and followed by Awaara, Mother India and Pyaasa.

SAHIB BIBI AUR GHULAM The Original Screenplay Dinesh Raheja & Jitendra Kothari

Half a century after its release, the cinematic appeal of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) has not only endured but continues to grow. Central to its fame perhaps is the tour de force performance from Hindi cinema’s foremost tragedienne, Meena Kumari, in the award-winning role of Chhoti Bahu, a woman defiantly struggling against a life of material privilege and personal desolation. Directed by the renowned writer, Abrar Alvi, Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, adapted from Bimal Mitra’s eponymous Bengali novel, Shaheb Bibi Golam, intrepidly explores the layered relationship that develops between Chhoti Bahu, a neglected, cloistered housewife, and Bhootnath, her male confidante, against the backdrop of late 19th-century feudal Calcutta (now Kolkata).

The film addresses complex interpersonal relationships with a wealth of subtlety and grace and throws light upon the exigencies of life for those under the yoke of the zamindari system in British India.

Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam: The Original Screenplay seeks to archive the screenplay of this seminal film. The films made under the aegis of Guru Dutt Films Pvt. Ltd. are an ineluctable part of Hindi cinema’s belle époque and this book is part of a compendium of books on three ageless classics—Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Kaagaz Ke Phool. The inspirational story of Medha Anup Jalota Bharathi S Pradhan

NEW

Attractive Medha Gujral and renowned filmmaker, Shekhar Kapur, ended their high-profile marriage in a Tis Hazari divorce court in New Delhi. Bhajan Samrat Anup Jalota had two infamously unsuccessful marriages behind him. When Medha and Anup met, a series of failed relationships and a passion for music was the only common ground between them. But as man and woman, they became inseparable. The arrival of precious baby Aryaman multiplied their happiness. However, this unbridled bliss was rudely truncated when Medha was diagnosed with a debilitating congenital heart disease in 2000. Since then, the Jalotas have seen it all—a chordae of her mitral valve cut by mistake in a US hospital, an emergency open-heart surgery, a lifesaving heart transplant and a hospital check-in scheduled in New York on, believe it or not, 9/11 in 2001. But, despite a decade and more of dwindling health, nearencounters with death, emotional oscillations and spiralling medical bills, Anup and Medha celebrate every moment of their life together. Heartfelt: The Inspirational Story Of Medha Anup Jalota is a living statement of how the mind can battle, even heal the body, when medical science gives up on you. THE SACRED INDIAN TAROT Symbols, Images and Icons from Indian Philosophy Kiren Rai

NEW

A beautiful, hand-drawn deck of Indian tarot cards, The Sacred Indian Tarot: Symbols, Images and Icons from Indian Philosophy combines the classicism of the Tarot with the aesthetic richness of Indian mythology. The book contains twenty-two (major arcanas) unique hand-painted cards with images taken from a rich pantheon of Indian mythology. The cards of the Tarot consist of potent archetypes rooted in Medieval and Renaissance Europe. The symbols, forms and figures used to represent these archetypes have been taken from Indian epics and scriptures and are rooted in the tenets of Hindu cosmic principles giving it a truly unique Indian perspective. The Sacred Indian Tarot deck is truly a collector’s item which can be used to gain a refreshing insight into love and relationships, finances, career and more. The book breaks new ground in Tarot divination making it a wonderful tool for self-discovery. KIREN RAI’s tryst with the Tarots began around twenty years ago, when she was introduced to the Tarot by a famous psychic and Tarot reader way back in East Africa, where she lived in the early part of her life. Drawn to the esoteric, her experience with the Tarot has been wonderfully positive, empowering her and helping her connect with the most essential parts of herself. Spiritually, the Tarot played a crucial part in selecting her path over the years. She has regularly used the Tarot as a tool for exploration and divination and has done readings for a group of friends, who value her insights and look to her for a fresh understanding of a situation. Fascinated by Tarot symbology, she has explored various decks and found esoteric similarities in the symbols used in all decks. This inspired her to put together an Indian deck of cards, replacing the traditional Tarot archetypes with Indian images and symbols. The deck took her nearly two years to complete and has been a pure expression of her creativity. While making the deck she has come to completion within herself and believes that this mosaic of Indian cards, created by upcoming Indian artists should be shared with a broader horizon of people.

Sri Sri Paramhansa Yoganand

Trained in meditation, the Scriptures and Kriya Yoga, Paramhansa Yogananda was sent by his teacher, as an emissary, to spread, Oriental spiritual knowledge in the West. This he achieved most successfully during his stays in the United States of America from 1920 to 1952. Thus, he penned a first-hand account of his life experiences in Autobiography of a Yogi, which traces the journey of a young Mukunda Lal Ghosh who is thirsting for divine knowledge.

THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL Anne Frank

July 11, 1942

NEW

We have forbidden Margo to cough at night, although she has a bad cold and make her swallow large doses of codeine. I am looking forward to Tuesday when the van Daans arrive; it will be much more fun and not so quiet. It is the silence that frightens me so in the evenings and nights. I wish like anything that one of our protectors could sleep here at night. I can’t tell you how oppressive it is never to be able to go outdoors, also I’m very afraid that we shall be discovered and be shot. That is not exactly a pleasant prospect. We have to whisper and tread lightly during the day, otherwise the people in the warehouse might hear us… At the young age of 13, Anne frank and her family, comprising her parents and her elder sister Margot went into hiding in an Amsterdam warehouse, to escape forceful deportation by Nazis. For the next two years, the Franks, along with another family of three and a single boarder, shared the closed confines of this ‘Secret Annexe.’ In August 1944, the inmates were betrayed, arrested and cruelly torn apart by the circumstances that followed. Anne had been gifted a diary on her 13th birthday. The diary became her closest friend and confidante during the years in hiding and here she recorded her feelings and experiences with utmost honesty. It is believed that Anne wanted to publish a book based on her diary. Autobiography Binding Paperback Size 129 × 198 mm Pages 264 ` 195 Price Rights: World

Otto Frank, Anne’s father, was the only member of the family who survived the war and the horrors of the Holocaust. To fulfill the wishes of his daughter, he decided to publish her diary. The entries in the diary, over the two years, reveal the blossoming of a kid into a young adult; the reason why it makes for one of the most heart-rending chronicles of literature. The readers cannot help but wonder about the kind of woman Anne could have grown up to be.

THINK AND GROW RICH Napoleon Hill

“In every chapter of this book, mention has been made of the moneymaking secret which has made fortunes for hundreds of exceedingly wealthy men whom I have carefully analysed over a long period of years.

“It was Mr. Carnegie’s idea that the magic formula which gave him a stupendous fortune ought to be placed within reach of people who do not have time to investigate how men make money, and it was his hope that I might test and demonstrate the soundness of the formula through the experience of men and women in every calling.

NEW

“The secret was brought to my attention by Andrew Carnegie more than half a century ago. The canny, loveable old Scotsman carelessly tossed it into my mind when I was but a boy... When he saw that I had grasped the idea, he asked if I would be willing to spend twenty years or more preparing myself to take it to the world... I said I would, and with Mr. Carnegie’s cooperation, I have kept my promise.

“He believed the formula should be taught in all public schools and colleges, and expressed the opinion that if it were properly taught, it would so revolutionise the entire educational system that the time spent in school could be reduced to less than half.”

Born in a one-room cabin in Virginia, Napoleon Hill (1883– 1970) was an American author who came upon his life’s purpose in 1908, when he met one of the most celebrated industrialist-philanthropists of the time, Andrew Carnegie, as part of a project to write about the lives of a series of financially successful, powerful men. Hill learnt that Carnegie believed in a kind of secret formula for success in the world, a simple set of rules which would do the trick for whoever could master them. Spotting the spark in Hill, Carnegie asked him if he could systematically analyse the lives of over five hundred noted personalities who seemed to have applied this very magic recipe for success, for others to benefit from. This was the primary impetus behind Hill’s writing, Think and Grow Rich (1937), an all-time bestseller in the genre of personal success literature. Of these stories, the most moving story was about his own son, Blair, who was born without any hearing organs at all but, through faith and perseverance, grew up to hear quite well. Later in life, Napoleon Hill addressed his many personal success teachings as ‘The Philosophy of Achievement’, of which he considered democracy, capitalism, freedom and harmony to be significant constituents.

CELESTIAL GALLERY Romio Shrestha Text: Ian A. Baker Foreword: Deepak Chopra Afterword: Robert A.F. Thurman

NEW

Boldly reinterpreting the age-old Tibetan and Nepalese art form known as Thangka, Celestial Gallery offers beautifully detailed representations of mandalas, or celestial spheres. Simply gazing upon the mandalas is meant to inspire in the viewer a heightened state of intention and clarity. Master painter Romio Shrestha and his team of artisan monks have created postmodern versions of these enlightened Buddha realms from hand-ground malachite, lapis lazuli, marigolds, and other rare substances. Painted at times with mere three hairs from the tail of a cat, these multifaceted scenes of otherworldly deities are rich with hauntingly powerful detail. Depictions of White Tara, Green Tara, the Medicine Buddha, and many other celestial beings invite and inspire meditation and reflection. ROMIO SHRESTHA is a master in the artistic traditions of Nepal and Tibet. He directs a school of artist-craftsmen in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal, painting in the Newari style. Shrestha’s work is represented in the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Tibet House in New York City. BUDDHAS OF THE CELESTIAL GALLERY

NEW

Romio Shrestha Text: Ian A. Baker Foreword: Deepak Chopra

Romio Shrestha’s newest large-format collection of bold traditional paintings in the Tibetan tradition is a work of art unto itself. Like its forerunners, Celestial Gallery and Goddesses of the Celestial Gallery, Buddhas of the Celestial Gallery is of the highest quality—hand-bound, printed on heavy paper, and an impressive two feet tall. Inside are 39 striking Tibetanstyle mandala paintings of the Buddha, each rendered in vivid colours and intricate detail by Shrestha and his team of artisan monks. Crafted from rare materials, these contemporary interpretations of an age-old Tibetan art form are replete with powerful details. Together with Deepak Chopra’s thoughtful text, these inspiring images offer fresh insight into an ancient spiritual tradition. Spirituality Binding Size Pages Price
