Inspiring the Nation Qatar has a growing, young and increasingly affluent population with ample leisure time, but participation in sport and physical activity is low. Chronic diseases are a major cause of death, accounting for 47 per cent of classified deaths in 2008. The primary drivers Qatar’s chronic disease burden are inactivity and sedentary lifestyles, which pose an increasingly serious health risk for individuals and families. Lifestyle adaptations, in terms of increasing physical activity and adoption of healthy dietary habits, must therefore be seen as a key pathway to improving the health of the Qatari population. Children and young people can gain more from physical activity than just improved physical health. An involvement in sport from an early age helps build character and discipline in children that can be applied in other aspects of their lives. Given that nearly all children and young people attend school, the school community has a unique role to play in providing and promoting diverse physical activity opportunities for young

people, through official compulsory physical education programmes and after-school co-curricular activities. In order to achieve healthy and active lifestyles, it is necessary to: • Increase opportunities for everyone in Qatar to be physically active; • Increase the availability of adequate information on the importance of physical activity and adoption of healthy dietary habits and how to achieve the recommended amount of activity for health; and • Create living, working and social environments that support and encourage healthy and active lifestyles Sports Sector Strategy (2011 – 2016) 8 The SSS calls for incorporating sports and physical activity within a broader preventive health agenda. A series of activities will be implemented to champion the many benefits of sports to individuals, families, communities and to society, and to increase participation across all age groups.

ORGANIZATIONAL ALIGNMENT IS THE GLUE FOR ACHIEVING BETTER PERFORMANCE The most critical element in any strategy is its translation into reality. The only true measure of success is in its execution. And one of the key determinants of successful strategy implementation is organizational alignment. Ever watched a rowing eights event? To achieve success, the rowers must stroke at the same pace with the blades of every oar pulling at the same depth in the water. Organizational alignment is the absolute compatibility between the strategic and cultural paths They all know the overall game plan for success and they are ready to respond to the orders of the coxswain (who’s job it is to quarterback the execution of the race strategy and communicate the adjustments that keep the boat on course in changing wind and water conditions) as individuals and as a cohesive unit.

Think of a successful organization, regardless of industry. One of the measures ofan organization’s success is its agility—whether it manages to stay at least one step ahead of its market. Achieving real alignment, where strategy, goals, and meaningful purpose reinforce one another, gives an organization a major advantage because it has a clearer sense of what to do at any given time, and it can trust people to move in the right direction. The result is an organization that can focus less on deciding what to do—and more on simply doing.

Each member of the team knows what their job is during the race and that they can rely on their coaching, training, boat, and equipment, and the skills, technique, and commitment of their teammates while the race is on. When team alignment and cohesion is off, the boat strays off course, essentially wasting time, energy, and the resources that were invested in trying to achieve the goal of winning the race. It’s very much the same for an organization. Without alignment, the best strategic plan will never be fully achieved because organizational alignment is the glue that makes strategy execution excellence happen. An aligned organization gets things done faster, with less effort, and with better results, and is more agile and responsive to changing business conditions. Ultimately, a high level of organizational alignment is essential for achieving increasingly better business performance results now and in the future! Why Do Managers Have to Worry So Much About Employee Motivation Issues?

by Ralph Heibutzki Managers have many good reasons to worry about employee motivation. Without a fully engaged workforce, an organization is less likely to achieve its objectives. Once employees no longer feel interested in their jobs, companies will observe a corresponding decline in morale, output and productivity. Managers who fail to address these issues head-on also jeopardize their own jobs, since the company relies on them to ensure that workers consistently perform at high levels.

Managers who ignore motivational issues face greater challenges during tough economic times, when fear of getting laid off may divert workers from satisfying an employer’s production goals, The Wall Street Journal reports. To address these concerns, experts like employee assistance program provider Richard A. Chaifetz advises managers to provide as much information as possible. Workers should know who’s getting laid off, whether additional cuts are coming, and what resources are available to those who lose their jobs. Otherwise, you inadvertently compound the situation by allowing the continual spread of rumor, speculation and misinformation. Declining motivation often expresses itself in higher turnover. One measurement of these attitudes is apparent from Kelly Services’ Global Workforce Index of March 2011. Study finds new mechanism to control information flow in the brain

Specialized nerve cells, known as somatostatin-expressing (Sst) interneurons, in the outer part of the mammalian brain (or cerebral cortex) - play a key role in controlling how information flows in the brain when it is awake and alert. This is the finding of a study published online in Science by a team of neuroscientists at NYU Langone Medical Center and its Neuroscience Institute. In experiments in mice, the researchers found that the activity of Sst interneurons changes when the animal goes from not moving its whiskers (in a resting state) to moving them (in an active state), a process known as whisking.

Desk jobs are bad for your heart and your waist A new study shows further evidence for the view that spending too much time sitting down is bad for our health and our waistline. Research led by Dr William Tigbe, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick found workers who have a desk-bound job have bigger waists and increased risk of heart disease. It supports advice to sit less and be more active; as much as seven hours a day on your feet, and walking seven miles, may be needed to avoid heart disease. Dr Tigbe kitted out 111 healthy Glaswegian postal workers with activity monitors for seven days; 55 were office workers and 56 delivered post for a living. The study revealed differences between the two groups. Those who had desk jobs had a bigger waist circumference - 97 cm compared to 94 cm - and approximately one BMI unit difference. They also had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease - 2.2% compared to 1.6% over ten years. The new study suggests that waist circumference increases by two centimeters, and risk of cardiovascular diseases by 0.2%, for every additional hour of sitting on top of five hours. Furthermore, bad cholesterol (LDL) increases and good cholesterol (HDL) decreases with each additional hour of sitting from five hours a day. Specifically, the team discovered that the cortex contains a diverse set of Sst interneuron subtypes that reach into different layers of the cortex. Some of the subtypes turn on while others turn off during whisking. The (Sst) interneurons then either selectively block or encourage the flow of information in ways that the researchers believe helps the animals make informed decisions and guide their movements. The results, adds Muñoz, may also speed the search for drug therapies for conditions where the senses are disrupted, including Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and autism. Researchers say that with its combination of active and passive brain states, the mouse’s reliance on “whisking” to navigate and interpret its environment makes it an “ideal model” to study nerve cell activity during these changing brain processing modes. They point out that the whiskers in the mouse snout are its most important sensory organ, adding that mice and rats are nocturnal animals and use whisker touches to sense their surroundings and decide their movements in the dark.

There could be associations between obesity and other cancers, but substantial uncertainty remains because the quality of evidence is not strong, say the international team of researchers, led by Maria Kyrgiou and Kostas Tsilidis from Imperial College London. Previously published evidence supports the association between obesity and some cancers, but some may be flawed or biased due to weak study design and conduct.

Of the 95 studies that included continuous obesity measures, only 13% of associations were supported by strong evidence, meaning the studies had statistically significant results and no suggestion of bias. Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled over the past 40 years. Strong associations were found in studies that examined BMI with risk of oesophageal, bone marrow, and colon (in men), rectal (in men), biliary tract system, pancreatic, endometrial (in premenopausal women), and kidney cancers.

I myself have struggled to balance my career and personal life for a time, but eventually I was able to find success. Allow me to share with you how I did it: It is important that we create boundaries or imaginary lines of protection between your work and family. This means determining which actions are acceptable and unacceptable. Boundaries hold the line to protect your work from the distraction of family, as well as protect your family involvement from the obligations at work. With clear boundaries, it would be easier for you to tell when your action is not in favor of one aspect of your life. Conflict between work and family life is one of the most common sources of stress for working adults. In this productivity-driven society that we are living in, more and more people are finding it hard to adequately fulfill their roles both at home and at the workplace. More often than not, workers are unable to find a point of balance between their careers and their families — there is always one that is given more priority than the other. This behavior has been associated with a number of dysfunctional outcomes — strained familial relationships, inefficiency at work, and poor physical and mental health. Hence, it is very important that we are able to achieve balance between our work and our family life. This may

With my struggle to attain the perfect balance between work and family, I was able to realize that there will always be times that I will have to let work or family take priority. It would be impossible to perfectly balance everything in your life at all times. For example, when one family member is sick, you may need to skip a work event; or when an important deadline must be met, you might need to miss dinner at home and stay working in the office late. The dilemma of balancing family and work has no easy solution. There is no onesize-fits-all approach. Every person and family must find specific solutions to their issues depending on their own preferences and needs. But basically, a balance between work and family occurs when a person is able to sufficiently meet family commitments and adequately perform responsibilities at work. There is nothing wrong with working hard to gain some of the finer things in life, but you should also not forget the worth of the things and people that really matter most.

Preparing kids with 21st century skills What new skills will kids need? • While schools are beginning to make the shift toward 21st century standards, there’s a lot that you can do as a parent to foster these skills at home. Try these ideas as starters for supporting your child’s success. • When children play together, offer them a collective set of play materials (such as a bin of crayons) rather than individual sets to encourage sharing, turn-taking and social skills. • Introduce phrases from different languages around the world, such as the words for “please” and “thank you,” and expose your child to ways of thinking that come from different cultures. Which languages and cultures are not important at this stage; the goal is to show your child that there are many different ways to think, speak, eat and celebrate, all worthy of respect.

Our world is rapidly changing. How can we help our children keep up? Twenty-first-century skills are a hot topic in education today; some even call them the new building blocks for learning. Our children will need to survive and thrive in an increasingly competitive global landscape, and at the same time be able to collaborate with others from all over the world. Creativity and innovation will be highly prized, both for developing technology and new media, and for solving challenges with more limited resources. • Encourage out-of-the-box thinking by asking your child to come up with one or two new rules to a familiar game. (Make sure the rules are still fair!) Try playing it their way, and then ask them what they thought went well and what could have gone better. Decide together whether to change the rules again, and brainstorm new ways of playing. This helps kids learn how to evaluate their ideas, and problem solve in a group. • Encourage your child to participate in family decisions and problem solving, and then praise your child’s efforts to reason through different situations. If they seem to be hesitant to throw in ideas, get the ball rolling by brainstorming together. Write everyone’s ideas on a piece of paper or whiteboard, giving equal consideration to each one. Once your child understands that all ideas are welcome, they may feel more confident in contributing their own.
