Post-Modern opera, Electronic music and Pre-Hispanic instruments

OME means “two” in the ancient Aztec language called “nahuatl”. Let this 100% Mexican project embrace you with their sound. OME is much more than a duet. It is a whole concept; a musical fusion that combines postmodern opera, electronic sounds, orchestra, and Pre-Hispanic instruments, which gives that little extra touch to the music, creating a magical balance where the past and the present hold hands in perfect harmony. Welcome to OME world. If you enjoy World Music, Ethnic fusions. Then OME is just for you.

The Band Paola Treviño and Rodrigo Garcia created OME in 2007. As History lovers, environmentalists and musicians, they wanted to create something mystical where culture, history, music and modern times met, allowing the past and the present to coexist as one, in perfect harmony. It is amazing to see what happens when one uses the heart to create. We don´t believe in limits... OME is not a high budget project at all, it was created, composed, recorded and produced in our little Home Studio, where we spent each night and day for over a year to put all the pieces together. Like us, you can create and give birth to your dreams, because it isn´t a matter of money, it´s a matter of will and inspiration.

¨ To us, OME is more than just a band, it is a concept, a philosophy of life... the awakening of consciousness¨

The Voices The vocal arrangements were specially planned and conceived to create distinctive moods; to interact with music, becoming a part of it, and not the main character. On occasions, modern harmonies were combined to those found on the ocarinas and pre-Hispanic flutes to generate new sounds and emotions. We are proud to say, that in some of our songs we counted with the participation of Antonio Monroi, a magnificent friend, narrator and actor with a large background in films and commercials, who helped and guided us deeper into the “nahuatlâ€?, the beautiful ancient Aztec language, which was a true inspiration for most of our songs. The piecing together of the voices of Paola TreviĂąo T. (a soprano coloratura) and Rodrigo Garcia MZ (a tenor with high range notes as a countertenor) blend together in a very special way, creating a rare and unique atmosphere.

The Arrangements The arrangements were carefully designed to create an enchanting fusion between the past and the present, making the electronic sounds coexist with the power and feeling of the pre-Hispanic instruments. To achieve the exact sounds with the pre-Hispanic instruments, it was necessary to study and share with some of the most important people in the pre-Hispanic music genre, such as some of the members of the group Tribu, Huesca y Bauche, among others. We had to know each instrument, learn their functions and sounds, thanks to the collaboration of some archeologists and anthropologists of the INAH ( National Institute of Anthropology and History), and travel through the magical places of our beloved ancient Mexico. In our research for more information, we had the urge to know if the pre-Hispanic instruments could be tuned somehow (since this subject in this type of music is questioned a lot), and we finally found out that the pre-Hispanic music is not polytonal, as much of us thought it was, but on the contrary, it is microtonal. Along the path, we discovered that there exists no record at all of the way pre-Hispanic music was written, which in a way gives us the tranquility of using the instruments as we please in each song, meaning by this, that in no way we are trying to reproduce the music from the past, but only to take advantage and exploit the amazing sounds as pure expressive material of our feelings and the contemporary world.

The Music The music was inspired by the historical events between Mexico, the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, and all the pre-Hispanic cultures of Mexico, in order to give use to the legacy of the ancestors. It was created to remind us about the greatness of the ancient cultures and civilizations easily, taken softly by the hand of the beautiful songs and melodies, into the modern world.
