BASE II Forum 2013 June 6-7 Plaza Mayor Convention Center Medellín, Colombia Event Brief
BASE II Forum 2013 The Opportunities for the Majority initiative (OMJ) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will host the second Forum for the Development of the Base of the Pyramid in Latin America and the Caribbean, BASE II, in June, 2013 in Medellín, Colombia. BASE I was held in São Paulo, Brazil in June 2011 and brought together over 800 practitioners and leaders from around world from business, academia, government, international development, media, and the nonprofit sector. In 2011, OMJ partnered with Grupo ABC in Brazil the 18th largest marketing and communications group in the world. For BASE II, we are forging a new partnership with Comfama, a private social enterprise—family compensation fund—with nearly three million members (workers, retirees, beneficiaries of an unemployment subsidy, etc) in the department of Antioquia. Comfama’s social mission and broad membership make it an ideal strategic partner for the BASE II. The goal of the 2013 Forum will be to showcase successful base of the pyramid business models and their potential for business strategy and poverty reduction. Colombia—and Medellín in particular—is a perfect venue for BASE II. The country has experienced positive growth over the last decade, has an excellent business and investment climate, and is a leader in BOP business models. OMJ has financed several innovative and successful projects in Colombia. Our experience illustrates that Colombia’s private sector is ready and interested in learning more about business at the base of the pyramid and the government has also embraced this concept and views market-based solutions as an important alternative for addressing development challenges. With BASE II, OMJ will further strengthen the IDB’s role as a source of knowledge and expertise in the identification, design, funding and dissemination of BOP business models in Latin America and the Caribbean. COMFAMA and the IDB have tremendous convening authority and together will be able to attract a large and important audience for the two day meeting. The IDB is the first multilateral finance institution with a dedicated BOP operational office and is a recognized leader among the impact investing industry in LAC. Comfama is a highly successful social enterprise and given its large membership, is well placed to drive new investment activity targeted at low income communities. During the event OMJ will release a seminal research piece on the market size and business strategy of the BOP in Latin America and the Caribbean. This research has not been up-dated since 2007 when World Resources Institute and the IFC released the “The Next 4 Billion: Market Size and Business Strategy at the Base of the Pyramid.” A deeper study on Colombia will also be presented identifying key players in the BOP market segments of various sectors of the economy where large companies can find commercial opportunities. Details When: June 6-7, 2013 Where: Plaza Mayor Convention Center. Medellín, Colombia. Number of persons expected: 800-1000
