Omkar Gund Architecture Student

Hello, I am Omkar Gund, currently studying in 4th year. I’m always eager to learn new things in order to broaden my horizons. I believe in putting in the effort, and I think that my curious nature keeps me going. I am quite interested in learning about sustainability, different sorts of materials, and their textures. I believe in creating spaces that improve people’s lives and provide positive experiences for those who live there. Apart from architecture, I love travelling, exploring new things and playing flute.

01 TOURIST INFORMATION CENTRE Pandavleni caves, Nashik

Academic Project 6th Semester Typology Visitor Centre

Location Nashik, Maharashtra Year 2020

BRIEF The Pandavleni Caves is a popular tourist destination. It is situated on a hill and tourists require to undertake a short trek to reach it. There is an existing rudimentary infrastructure catering to these tourists, but it is not a planned facility. The ASI now wants to develop a tourist centre where rest amenities can be provided for tourists before and after their visit. Along with this, the centre is also looking to increase awareness about the history of this area and a conscious effort to make visitors realize the importance of looking after and caring for our historical structures.

Nashik

DESIGN The proposed design focuses on engaging visitors throught the journey of tourist centre by connecting indoor spaces with the outdoors. The materials used in the design gives the essence of the contextual architecture. All the spaces are aligned towards north direction to get the maximum amount of diffused light inside the structure.

Typology Redevelopment Housing typology + Commercial

BRIEF Demand for Residential and Commercial units has been on rise with the increase in the population. In most of the Indian Urban areas, due to lack of availability of land in prime areas, making new residential communities is a big challenge. There are many housing societies in such cities which are in bad structural conditions and have reached the end of their construction lifespan. Therefore redevelopment of such projects becomes an opportunity in the current context. The existing housing communities have a feeling of discomfort with a lot of uncertainties & unknowns when it comes to redevelopment by the Builder. Considering this the Indian Government is providing various incentives and new provisions. This has led to an increasing number of residential communities who are willing to take self development as a tool to redevelop their communities. AIM Housing Redevelopment as a tool to create and shape enduring and inclusive Habitat.

Solar Decathlon India Finalist (On-Going Competition) Typology Single Family Housing Site Area 4480 SQ.M. (448 sqm Per single family house)

Location Thiksey, Leh Climatic Condition Cold Year 2021

ROLE Team Member (Design Team) WORKED ON Architectural design, landscaping, Innovation, passive performance, architectural drawings, graphics design, report and video. BRIEF Single-family housing, at the high-end of the market as well as affordable homes, including those built under PMAY scheme are in demand despite the strong growth in multifamily housing. This housing type is as vulnerable as, if not more than multifamily housing, to the hazards of flooding and other hydro-meteorological events. Rising temperatures due to climate change increase cooling energy demand. This Division provides the opportunity for replicable and scalable solutions to achieve resilient, net-zero-energy-water housing. The site for the Nilaya housing is located in Thiksey village, which is 15 kilometers down to Leh. The region is a dry desert, which falls under the cold climate zone. (Ref - ECBC 2017). In the recent COP26, the Prime Minister upheld a vision for India to become net-zero by 2070. This proposal will be a model and a step towards that vision. The recent policies proposed by government of India in 2019, has liberalized Leh-Ladakh creating an opportunity for housing development and investments in the region, but currently there are no advancement in housing construction. The local communities use the traditional techniques which are effective, which will be a baseline for our project. We intend to provide some solutions for issues such as water scarcity, sanitation, electric supply, etc. With help of our project partner ‘ASEEM Foundation’. We would be developing an innovative housing module which will be Net-zero, resolving the many challenges faced here.

Site Demarcation

Leh is a cold desert which falls under the cold climatic zone (according to ECBC 2017). It receives extreme cold winters ranging from -10 to -20 degree celsius ranging from November to February and extreme summers in the month of May for one or two week days.

Average Temperature and Precipitation

Windrose Diagram

November to February are the months when the temperature drop is very low due to snowfall in that region. The summers in Leh are the comfortable months for the people, where the average temperature ranges from 30-35 degree celsius per annum.

Site Plan Site has in total of 10 plots in which 2 plots are dedicated for community gathering, combined with services. Services are segregated based on the site topography and slope of 7 m is taken into consideration. The modules are placed on the site in a way that the main living spaces are mostly located on the southern side for natural heat gain, and the slope of the site also helps to avoid shadow effect of one building on another.
